Gulf Coast League is not important to player development

Or at least that's the impression I get from the Cardinal Organization. Why else do you hire a guy; Kleininger Teran, who is just about to turn 23 to be the hitting coach. Seriously, those who can...do....and those that can't....retire and become the hitting coach. So here's the orgs thinking; drafted high schoolers and Dominican imports at this level can't be very good so let's not waste money on bringing in a veteran coach to iron the bugs out of their swings. Why else do you hire someone with zero experience as your hitting coach and again he's only 22 years old. To put it in perspective. almost the same age as James Ramsey. More on the way!

The upside, of course, is that he speaks spanish and half of the hitters on the team are from the DSL. Realistically the GCL could also go by the name Latin Integration League since that's where the pipeline flows. Here players are taught to speak English and learn a little of the culture so they can blend in as best they can. This is every bit as important as honing their baseball skills. It really has to be tough coming to a new country by yourself, well actually with a bunch of your teammates, however, not with family. Some, like Roberto De La Cruz, as young as 16. Having a coach who understands where you're coming from and the trials and tribulations associated with it, must be a blessing. Albeit, he's not much older then them to be a father figure.

Communication is so important in any industry. On the other hand, Teran has no experience being a coach, let alone being the hitting coach. He still has to get his ideas across to the American players too. But how much, and this is my sticking point, can someone that young know about hitting. Not enough to help himself excel. Did he tutor under Mark McGwire? I doubt this guy has enough hitting knowledge to straighten out a slumping hitter or pick out a slight flaw in his swing. These guys would have had better hitting coaches where ever they came from. In my opinion (and that's all this is) you want your prospects learning properly right from the start from a trained expert.

So is this the reason that Carson Kelly may have had a gentlemen's agreement that he not be started in the GCL?! If I were him, it would be or did the Cardinals themselves say 'hey we can't send a top prospect down to learn from someone with no experience. If that's the case then why hire him? I think the idea of having Teran there as a 'big brother' type to help all the Latinos cope is a great idea. If Kleininger had been coaching anywhere before then it's fine as long as he has coaching certification/training. But to trust anyone with no experience in such an important role absolutely makes no sense and for the players sent there trying to live their dream....it's just not fair! I just don't understand the logic. Someone please enlighten me.

And before some dumb smuck cries out 'your a racist', it's not about nationality, it's about zero coaching experience and being too young to understand the science of hitting. I'm sure Teran is a terrific guy and perhaps an astute learner who someday just may make a fine coach, but.......
