Welcome to your post-apocalyptic not-so-friendly-to-your-computer annual Fun and Gems with the 2012 Cardinals fanpost. Yours truly has not been able to be around too much this past year and we also didn't win it all, so this season's absurdity will be slightly less flashy, I hope next season I'll have a reason to include pictures of the championship trophy again.

(Btw, since the revamp of SBN earlier this year, the old end of season posts' formatting has become shifted. I won't be fixing those right this moment but at some point.. so if you are going back to those, I apologize for the ugliness but bear with me, I'll get to it eventually.)

Pujols drama and sweepstakes: - It all started with some rather enlightening but hardly surprising Lozano drama. Then there was a statue. In the beginning the Cubs and the Marlins joined the sweepstakes, the Marlins even made a solid and quite outrageous offer but when they fell off, for a moment it looked like all we had to do is hand Pujols a pen. Then the Angels swept in out of nowhere with their new TV money and the promise of sunny California (and an ultimatum) for a guaranteed 10/$240 + full NTC + lots of perks + 10 years personal services contract. There was "not about the money" denial, crying (#pujolscrieswhen), there was pointing fingers about who felt disrespected, there was a full page ad in the PD. It took Pujols until May 6th to hit a HR and he was batting .190 on May 8th. Ouch. Thanks for the memories and good luck in Anaheim, Albert..

- Lance Lynn puts his pregnant wife and two dogs in the truck and drives 53 hours during 4 and a half days 3600 miles from Portland, OR to Spring Training. Their daughter Mia Jane Lynn was born shortly after their arrival in Palm Beach County.
- Carlos Beltran shells out $10,000 to pay for a rhinoplasty for Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese.
- Furcal 2 / $14 M - Cardinals tender Kyle McClellan (1 / $2.5M) and Jason Motte (1 / $1.95 M); non-tender Ryan Theriot - Skip 2 / $3 M - JC Romero 1 / $750K - Beltran 2 / $26 M with full NTC - Yadier Molina receives extension 5 / $75 M with mutual option for 2018 - Carp drama: persistent neck discomfort, bulging disc in his neck, four days of various exams conclude nerve irritation separate from the bulging cervical disc issue. Eventually, when the recovery doesn't work, he receives an unusual season ending surgery in July - "first rib on his right side removed and two scalene muscles released in order to alleviate pressure on nerves running from his neck to upper arm". Currently the rib resides in a jar with solution in one of his bathroom cabinets. - Mike Matheny's too excited for first game in ST, gets up at 3 am to go to Roger Dean Stadium, loses first game he manages.

The team scored 765 runs, 2nd in the NL, 5th in MLB, is in a three-way tie with COL and TEX for most hits - 1526, 4th in team average .271, 1st in OBP .338; 8th in team ERA 3.71, 4th least home runs allowed 134, 5th best in BB's allowed 436, five players hit 20 or more HRs
The Crazy and the Awesome - the Postseason
The sudden death Wild Card game is not called wild for nothing - the Cardinals go to Atlanta to end their postseason hopes for the second time in the last two years. Trailing by 2 runs until they score 3 in the 4th thanks to some Braves errors, Cardinals add on in the 6th and 7th and escape a major jam in the 8th thanks to a controversial infield fly call, followed by a 19 minute delay because a crapton of litter is thrown on the field by Braves fans, who don't realize that their sloppy defense took their chances of winning away much more than that call. We also learned that a bottle won't hurt Matt Holliday. Happy Flight into the REAL postseson! Oct 5
NLDS 1 is played in St Louis where the Cardinals lead 2-1 for the majority of the game, collect 7 walks and only 3 hits (Werth robs Descalso of a 2R-HR) but are unable to add on and leave a sea of 21 LOBsters. In the 8th the Nationals score 2 runs off the bullpen parade and Cardinals drop the first game of the Division Series Oct 7
NLDS 2 is a 12-4 fun blowout for the red birds even though Jaime gets taken out early and ultimately taken off the roster because of injury. Lynn saves the day and the Cardinals make everything count, collect 13 hits and 5 walks, hit 4 HRs (2 for Beltran, Descalso hits one to Werth again that he can't touch this time), Jay has 2 hits including a triple and 3 RBIs and shows some freak defense again. Fun game, Happy Flight to Washington DC Oct 8
NLDS 3 is another blowout for St Louis 8-0 on 14 hits. Carp pitches 5.2 after pitching only 17 innings during the regular season and also hits a double, Yadi draws a bases loaded walk on 7 pitches, Matt Holliday goes 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, Pete Kozma hits a 3R HR Oct 10
After dropping NLDS 4 on a walkoff and going for the deciding game 5, some more drama was in order. After jumping 6-0 on Adam Wainwright in the first three innings, the Nationals are looking pretty good. Waino records his worst start and exits the game after 53 pitches and 2.1 IP but asks his teammates to pick him up, so they start chipping away - 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 7th and 8th each. The Cardinals relief only allows 1 run in 5.2 IP. The Nats go into the 9th with a two-run lead and hand the ball to their closer. The Cardinals dugout is still alive, Chris Carpenter predicts "the most epic comeback ever". The plastic is up in the Nats locker room. One strike away from winning the NLDS, Drew Storen walks Yadier Molina. And then the exact same thing with Freese. Then Descalso singles to drive in two and tie the game. The Nats elect not to walk the next batter in order to pitch to none other than the dangerous slugger Jason Motte with the bases loaded, instead they decide it is a good idea to pitch to the Warlock in the 8th spot, who promptly singles Freese and Descalso in. The Nationals bring the Cardinals down to their last strike 5 times and can't seal the deal. They lose the game and return to a locker room still wrapped in plastic but no champagne. It is the largest comeback in winner-take-all game in postseason history and the Cardinals' 6th consecutive postseason elimination victory, 14th altogether, most in MLB. SF watches on their plane waiting to see if they are flying to Washington or St Louis. Carp holds the champagne celebration off until Descalso and Kozma finish their on-field interviews and join their teammates in the clubhouse. Epic! Oct 12
The two last World Champions face off for the first time in the LCS. SF doesn't really appreciate our Carlos. Cardinals put 2 on the board in the 2nd and exchange 4-run innings in the 4th with the Giants. Neither side's starter makes it through 4. Bullpen pitches 5.1 scoreless and some flashy defense helps keep the Giants in check. Oct 14
Matt Holliday takes out Marco Scutaro a bit too hard in NLCS 2, and Big Carp hits another double. Other than that, let's pretend that game didn't happen.
The Cardinals win a rather uneventful coupled with a lengthy rain delay Game 3. Little Carp's parents take a terribly long drive from TX to St Louis to see him hit a HR to win the game for the team. Actually, Matt Carpenter is in the game only because Carlos Beltran gets injured, so it was kismet, I guess. Oct 17
With the help of an excellent Adam Wainwright the 8-3 Game 4 pounding now suddenly puts the Cardinals in a 3-1 lead in the Championship Series. A win away from the WS and leading... hm... weird... Oct 18
So, we didn't go to the WS.. After being one win away from it, the Giants handed us the same three game ass whopping they did to the Reds to turn us around, go to the Series and eventually win it. The downside - Ryan Theriot is now a World Champion again. That's baseball, congratulations to the Giants, they outmagiced us. But all in all, we had a rather good season, an epic record setting postseason and lots of fun.
