saturday open thread

sorry, but something came up this morning, so you will have an open thread for today.

briefly, i note that mlb trade rumors is distressingly announcing that arthur rhodes is not retiring, and that he will decide where he'll land soon. worse, they claim the cardinals and the mariners have both shown interest in him. unless the cardinals showed interest months ago, that makes no sense. bettween scrabble and romero and swindle, there's surely no need for a fourth left-hander, especially one who is completely dreadful.

otherwise, share below your one dream acquisition for this off-season, whether by trade or free agency.

I wonder

if Pineda will actually be a true ace or even #1. Seems more like a #2-3 to me. Absolutely electric fastball and slider, but lack of command and a third pitch may limit him. He is young enough to rectify those issues though, I’m just hesitant.

The general idea still stands though.

Dude put up a 3.53 xFIP already as a 22 year old

And hasn’t had a BB/9 over 3 at any stop along the way. No changeup…..but if he doesn’t have an ace potential, I don’t know who does.

Go

look at a gamelog. As soon as he started going through lineup multiple times he got worse. Some of it may be fatigue, but I also think players were getting a second and third look at him and it started mattering, especially since he only has two pitches.

I haven't been around much lately.....

Did anything ever come of the Roy Oswalt rumors? Seems like the Cards might have been interested in adding him to the pen? I’d rather grab him as a starter, and put Westy in the pen, or try to trade him.

Guess he really isn’t a “need”, but it sure would be nice to have him.

Oswalt

Seeing the Brewers ZIPS yesterday, I realized that they are a lot closer to us in talent than I thought. So our playoff leverage is still very high. 5th starter remains are biggest upgrade point, and Oswalt remains the cheapest in terms or price/prospects.

Sign Roy Oswalt.

I'd like to see Westy and Oswalt on the team...

with Westbrook in the pen as the long man/6th starter. Lynn is going to be valuable as a reliever, and Cleto is not ready to be our emergency starter. Miller is a possibility I suppose…

by guayzimi on Jan 7, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

That could always happen to any team

not to be a downer though, we do still have to wait and see how Waino will pitch, and how Carp looks after last years heroics, I’m more worried about the two of them than Jaime, Lohse, or Westbrook personally. And while valuable in the pen Lynn or Rzep have starter potential

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

right, I think our depth is fine

because we have stores in the minors. I just think Westbrook is the worst starter on our team – he projects worse than Dan + Greene in a platoon. Also, there is no one available in free agency who can play second and who is better than the guys we have. Oswalt is way better than Westbrook.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

I believe Westbrook will be more confident and will do fine with a more competent MIF behind him

Assuming Greene can handle the platoon, or hopefully be even better than a platoon player with his history in the minors. I will admit, before discovering this site before the 11’ season I was ready to cut him during the 10’ season as he seemed useless, but my eyes were opened to his potential/possibilities once I became aware of his performance in ML system prior.

If MO solves the Westbrook NTC issue so that all parties are happy (most importantly Westbrook) and can score Oswalt I would not be upset at all, but Oz has his own potential issues.

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure Westbrook will be fine

I’d expected around a 4.30 FIP. But Oswalt is probably 1.5 wins better, over a 150 inning season. And that’s pretty big.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

See I like Westbrook more than Lohse...

Westbrook’s problem in 2011 was a bad defense and too many walks. The thing he has done well – getting grounders – he still does well.

Lohse on the other hand is going to really struggle once his luck evens out.

Sign Roy O

by guayzimi on Jan 7, 2012 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

While Lohse is not a GB pitcher, the improved MIF will help him as well, as he does induce

some GB, which will give him more pitching approach options. I think it was the, smaller influence than on Westbrook, piece that held him back this year.

11 in 11' √
12 in 12', WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

er, no

Lohse’s ERA was far, far below his defense independent stats. He likely benefited a lot from his defense, even if they were bad in the aggregate.

Lohse is going to be much worse next year than in 2011.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but his FIP was 3.67

Now if you’re talking about HR/FB, then I agree that Lohse is due for a big regression next year.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

If Lohse's ERA was below his defense independent stats, then with an even better defense

His ERA and DIP stats should be even better, especially if he feels more comfortable in situations when he feels best option in a given batting situation is to pitch to induce the GB…just another tool he may have in the bag to minimize the LD and HRs while mixing it up more to keep the hitters guessing.

Several errors, at least a couple in the same game, right before the post season I think, were made by Furc during that week long time frame where he muffed a few plays, while Lohse was pitching, Lohse went on to win the game. The next game similar shit happened to Jaime, who couldn’t recover or didn’t hold up as well to get out of it. I thought Lohse did an excellent job to pitch through it and still get the win.

11 in 11' √
12 in 12', WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

No, you're confusing a whole bunch of things

Firstly, we don’t know how good Lohse’s defense was. We know how good the Cardinals defense was as a whole (roughly), but we don’t know how well they played in the 190 innings Lohse was on the mound.

Secondly, the main reason Lohse’ BABIP was low was likely luck. Lohse throws a fastball down the middle, and instead of hitting a single, the batter hits a weak fly ball. Now, we don’t know if Lohse actually got lucky, but his low BABIP says he did. Pitchers rarely have BABIP’s that low, and if they do, they usually aren’t the soft throwing, finesse guys (except for knuckleballers).

As to your main point, I don’t think Lohse shied away from pitching to his defense last year. His strikeout rate was below his career average.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Well I certainly do confuse a whole bunch of things, but I am reading and trying to put it all together

but my subject line was in response to yours, although I didn’t see the connection in ERA and DIP as ERA is simply the average earned runs scored against him, which as I understand it is a lot diff than DIP.

My point is, w/o being able to illustrate it properly is:
A. Some of Lohse’s pitches result in GB, even if he’s not a GB pitcher like say Westbrook
B. If he had more confidence in the MIF he may mix in more sliders/sinkers whatever low IN the strike zone, lessening his % of LD and HR
C. His confidence in the defense behind him may translate into better approach to K batters and increase his K percentage

12 in 12', WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I got your points

And I’m saying it isn’t likely that Lohse was scared of mixing in his low pitches or whatever. His strikeout rate was below his career average, so he was pitching to his defense more than ever.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

it probably won't

because Lohse had a .270 BABIP last year and luck doesn’t carry over.

batters still hit just .235 against westy on GB last year.

that’s right in line with his career; the difference between his career .222 and his .235 last season (on 365 ground balls) was less than 5 hits, so what, about 2 runs? Maybe 3 runs, if you add a run to try to correct for the 0.008 increase in R/ER rate over his career, last year (.914 to .922).

And MLB average last year was .237, so he wasn’t terribly unlucky.

good post

it looks like the main difference was in fly balls. Now we had Berkman in right, and Rasmus/Jay weren’t rated as good defenders.

But usually, the main source of BABIP fluctuation is luck attached to the pitcher/hitter rather than fielding talent + fielding luck.

Secretary of WAR and Defense of the Tyler Greene Fanclub.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Jay was not rated well? He was a CF most of his time in the Minors hasn't he?

He does not posses the athleticism of an Edmond’s or Rasmus potential but he goes and makes the catch or fields it on the bounce or off the wall quite well, and get’s it in quite well. Meaning he doesn’t cost us based on failed diving attempts, being scared of the wall, or misplayed flys

(BTW that was damn funny!)

by I-Musial-ly-Am on Jan 7, 2012 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Jay was actually pretty decent by defensive stats in CF last year

His UZR/150 was +3.2. His DRS for CF was +7 (for all OF positions, it was +14 — good for 6th in the entire major leagues).

Jay’s worst defensive attribute is his arm, but other than that, he was actually pretty good last year.

Yeah, he's going to regress a lot in BABIP next year

by vivaelpujols on Jan 7, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

I'll add to this with the following -

According to UZR, Jon Jay had, by far, the worst arm among all ML OF’ers last year who played at least 500 innings. Worse even than Juan Pierre.

Also, according to DRS, Lance Berkman was just a bit better defensively than Ryan Ludwick in the OF last year. (Ludwick is a terrible baseball player now)

DRS likes Carlos Beltran’s OF defense better than Cody Ross’.

Trade for Longoria

Move Freese to first after this year

by CentralILcardsfan on Jan 8, 2012 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

Can I get an Amen?!

Ian Kinsler would be the perfect player to get for the Cards. Trade anybody that isn’t Holliday, Garcia, Miller, Wainwright or Freese. Heck, maybe even Freese.

I am a college student that sleeps with a St. Louis Cardinals Fredbird Pillow Pet, and I am proud of it.

by Sir Sci on Jan 7, 2012 4:02 PM EST reply actions

My dream acquisition would probably be Kinsler.

I'd do Freese for Kinsler yesterday

Isn't that a concern no matter what prospect you're looking at?

I’m worried Miller or Martinez or Rosenthal won’t live up to the hype, but I think you go with whoever’s hype is the biggest in case they do live up to it.

Even if he doesn't live all the way up to his hype he could still be a very good major league player.

They’re hyping him up to be a Pujols-level player. So even if he only makes it halfway to that hype it’s still 4-5 WAR/season at his peak.

From its Wiki page
The Mercury Mountaineer is a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured by the Mercury brand name and owned by the Ford Motor Company from 1997 until the brand’s demise in 2011. The Mountaineer shares many features with the Ford Explorer, and in terms of hardware, the vehicles are virtually identical.1 Externally, they are styled somewhat differently, and the Mountaineer is positioned with a more upscale interior, with the Mountaineer’s MSRP coming in at $1,000–$6,000 more than the Explorer.2 It was mildly redesigned for the 2006 model year due to a new frame, but looks very similar to its previous model. Some controversy resulted after the media highlighted a number of rollovers involving Explorers and Mountaineers fitted with Firestone tires. The Mountaineer has been praised for its excellent handling and stability.3 The Mountaineer was never sold in Canada. When Ford eliminated the Mercury division, production of the Mountaineer ended in late 2010.4
