"10 (Tie). David Freese and Jose Oquendo
Freese's incredible BABIP streak continues, as he lucked out when that horrible TV show about two men dressing like women that he had filmed a cameo on was canceled after two episodes. Let us all pray his scenes will never be released online.
Actually, let's pray for the opposite of that."

The fact that this show got canceled so quickly
gives me hope for the future, mitigated almost completely (but not entirely) by the fact it was ever made in the first place.

all of Fritz’s top four are mustachioed. This reveals something, but I’m unsure what
Second thought: Maybe it’s just a bad photo, but Stan Kroenke is giving Derek Holland a run for his money in the “my facial hair is legally recognized as a guilty plea to charges of child molestation” competition.
#1 is flat out fantastic.
Now whenever I see/hear/read-something-from Tony Softli, it will always coming from the Mr. Johnson muppet.
Well done, Mr. Fritz.

What I don't get is why his foot isn't on the base...
and why is there a blurry image of a player behind him? Who is that player behind first base and where is he running to?

It's a pickoff throw to first base
The guy behind him is the runner, getting back to first easily. Albert is receiving the throw like that because he knows he has no chance of tagging the runner.
Seems odd the runner is so blurry when he's not very far in the background
I suppose they increase the blur so as to not disrespect Pujols…

How many players did the Cards call up in September?
Chambers, Greene, an extra catcher…?
I found this quote from Melvin interesting and doesn’t really jibe with my recollection:
“I believe the Cardinals won the World Series because of the expanded rosters in September,” Brewers GM Doug Melvin said. “Tony La Russa is the best in the game at using his roster, especially with an expanded roster in September. In September, they had a ton of players that he could use.”
as you know, only the cardinals were allowed to use the 40 man roster.
it is what it is, not what we thought it'd be
Selig strikes again!

Elation. Sadness. Mayhem. Champagne. Sleepless fury. Never been a night like it. - Joe Posnanski
Well my reaction is not only to that but the suggestion that we had "a ton of players" available
It seems to me that in most years the Cards don’t call up that many players.
Also I guess I should point out that I took the quote from an article on ESPN.com
Suggesting changes to the game including stopping the use of expanded rosters or limiting the roster to 25 players for any given game.
Melvin is just wrong...
The Cardinals used 18 position players in September and players 14-18 totaled 33 plate appearances (CoPa 12, Sugarshane 8, Adron 8, Cruz 3, Greene 2). They went 6 for 33.
They used 15 pitchers. Pitcher #15 and #14 appeared in one game each and pitched one inning each(Sanchez and Cleto). Pitcher #13 appeared in two games and pitched 4.1 innings (Dickson).

Every once in awhile I hear the
“New York should get a third baseball team” argument. Would enough Yankees and Mets fans jump ship to make that plausible? I doubt it. The same goes with the “Chicago could support a second NFL team” theory.

I think the whole 2nd NFL team in Chicago
was all the creation of ex-Mayor Richard Daley who was lobbying hard to land the Summer Olympics for Chicago. He had to have a good reason to build another big ass stadium downtown and I believe the only logical explanation he could come up with was that Chicago should (and could totally support) another NFL franchise to fill this new proposed stadium.
it was a dumb idea.
This city is entrenched in the Bears. And those that aren’t are in it for the Packers.
There’s no way in hell any fan was ever going to migrate from either of those teams to some new team just because. Way too much history.

The real issue is Alex Avila
Putting V-Mart back at catcher would be fine except that they have one of the best young catchers in baseball, if not the best.
His value will be awful coming off missing an entire year
And trading Avila seems stupid. What are the Tigers doing? This is crazypants.
It's a crazy contract...
but not because of Martinez. Once he blew his knee, he essentially stopped having any value at all. He was a 3 win DH last year. In 2013 there’s probably a 1/3 chance he will be replacement level or won’t be a baseball player, 1/3 chance he’ll be something like a league average hitter or below average, and 1/3 he’ll get back to a 120 OPS+ which is about a 2 win DH. They probably proceeded as if Victor Martinez did not exist.

In any event, I don’t see much of a problem for Det. Prince and Miggy play 1B and DH this year while VMart is out. Delmon or whoever can play LF. ( So there’s no problem for 2012)
That leaves VMart with a 2yr/25MM contract for 2013-14 (or something like that). He can play some C/DH/1B and maybe LF or Miggy could play LF in 2013 or maybe even some 3B (probably LF though). They’ve got over a year to figure it out and they can always trade VMart too. Is it ideal? Not really, but hardly crippling for a team with money.

not to mention that by 2020 fielder will be large enough
to actually create significant relativistic time distortions in his immediate neighborhood
that's 23.7/year vs 12.2/year.
i’d like the extra 13 million. i don’t know what i’d do with it but at that point i’d probably just be writing pretty big checks to the bill & melinda gates foundation.
it is what it is, not what we thought it'd be
Agents handle a lot of stuff beyond contract negotiations...
if you were an athlete you’d have to sit down with the various firms that wanted to represent you and look at their track record of managing their client’s image, getting sponsorships, and all the other stuff they do.
There’s no question Boras is the best at negotiating these contracts.
Sign Roy O
I don't buy this at all, not even a little
i am rather indifferent between 214 million dollars over 9 years and, like, 100 million dollars over 9 years
RIGHT NOW you don’t see a difference between those numbers, because both would lead to essentially the same type and scope of radical departure from your current lifestyle. And I get that — from where I’m sitting, those numbers both seem just equally ridiculous and absurd as well. But I seriously, seriously doubt that when you’re actually a baseball player faced with the choice between the two that you would feel “rather indifferent.”
right...
and these guys are immersed in a community of people who very much see the difference between 10M, 50M and 200M.
Sign Roy O
Yeah, I don't get why so many people fail to see this
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missoura!"
well i definitely wouldn't care about an extra 10 million a year
I would just choose to go to my favorite team, even for a huge discount.
This is also operating in the same universe where I am not a baseball player. If I were a mega-talented player, I would likely have a different set of values.

That's my whole point, though
It’s not that hard to make the logical leap from what “I a normal person” would do to what a star athlete is already a multi-millionaire would be thinking. Or at least that is how it seems to me.
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missoura!"
What I'm saying
is that its likely those who are star athletes have a different set of values – those values coming before the stardom – than I do. Also, probably a lot of it is conditioning. So we agree.

I would have figured Detroit would have been low on his list just because now he’s probably going to have to deal with more crap about and comparisons to his dad. But maybe that won’t really be a big deal (or maybe $214 million is enough to make him not mind).

No, but I think he still occasionally gets comments/questions about him,
which he really doesn’t like, unless he’s somehow managed to put a stop to that. I’d imagine it will be a more frequent topic with him playing for the team where his dad spent the majority of his career. But maybe that doesn’t happen much anymore.

What's the backstory there?
I am unaware.
Ahhh, the joy of trading Colby Rasmus for a World Series. I'll take that every year please.
The basic gist of it that I'm aware of is that Cecil was really bad with his own money after he
was done in baseball, and at some point he started trying to get money from Prince in compensation for his perceived contributions to Prince’s baseball career. The money arguments just kind of spiraled out of control, with Cecil at some point saying he was the reason Prince even had a career, and Prince has said that one of his major motivations in baseball is to outshine his father and prove him wrong about that.
I’m not sure how much (if any) more there is to it than that.
by BTown Birds fan on Jan 24, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions
I'll say Prince...
Comerica is 365 ft to the RF power alley and only 330 down the line. It’s much harder to hit HRs there as a right handed hitter.
Fielder will hit 180 in the four years.
Sign Roy O
I'll go Cecil.
35, 35, 35, 30, 30, 25, 20, 20, 15 leaves him at 245, and it seems fairly optimistic to me with that body, and no injuries. It’s fairly close though.
