St. Louis Bars

I've had a personal matter come up that I have to attend to, for which I apologize.

In the comments, let me know what bars should be included in VEB's guide to St. Louis. (I've got to make some progress on this if I'm going to have it done before the season and get Fritz off my case.) Try to keep the bars in the city proper and let me know if it is a dive bar, nice bar, novelty bar or what connections it might have to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Check the what's happening pages and notes. Find a place where Howard Young, aka "Blues Harp" is playing.

He’s quite good and gigs with great local talent. . .

My mother took me to O'Connell's in the late 60's

when I was, like, ten or eleven, for lunch, when I had to go to a doctor’s office for some reason. I had one of their wonderful burgers. Do they still have a wall with hundreds of beer bottles/cans of all types there?

OT: Question

Now that the Red Sox have traded Lowrie and Scutaro, who is going to play SS for them? Did I miss a big signing or deal they made?

by stlfan on Jan 22, 2012 9:36 AM EST reply actions

I said starting

You really think they’ll go with Punto at SS all year? 150+ games?

by stlfan on Jan 22, 2012 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Part-time Shredder
In Scutaro’s absence, the Sox likely wil rely on Mike Aviles and Nick Punto to play short. Punto hit .278 with a .388 OBP, .421 slugging mark and .809 OPS in 63 games for the Cardinals last year. Aviles hit .317 with a .340 OBP, .436 slugging mark and .775 OPS in 35 games for the Sox after being picked up in a mid-year trade with the Royals.

That said, while the Sox are comfortable with proceeding with that duo (and almost certainly would not open the year with Jose Iglesias at shortstop), one source noted the the Sox will continue to pursue the possibility of upgrades at any position. (That said, this was a particularly weak class of free agent shortstops, so viable upgrades might be hard to identify in the near term.)

Theriot is still out there, guys!

Maybe they're going with

21 year old Jose Iglesias? He only had a .260 AAA wOBA last year…ouch. In 2010, he was really good at low A ball…but got quickly moved to AA, then AAA last year. Sink or swim?

If Fielder doesn’t get signed long term because there is no “fit” as suggested here what is the most $ you would want Mozeliak to throw at him for one season?

In a hypothetical

I would roll the dice and pay $10M for one year of Beast Mode. But I just don’t see where we could play him. There are too many boppers on this hypothetical team. That, and it would be a terrible fit for Prince.

Tap selection is very good but small, but the service blows (and if the service blows you better have good food to make up for it like B.O. The shit all over the walls and the sense of entitlement from whoever serves you is annoying as hell.

Would you take Furcal or Scutaro?

Spotted Scutaro’s release. Would he have been a better fit for the Cards at HHS dollar price than Rafael Furcal. Scutaro is a little older, but does have an ok WAR, and plays both middle infield positions. What say you?

by JWO on Jan 22, 2012 10:32 AM EST via mobile reply actions

That being said,

wouldn’t you require something more than just Mortensen in trade for Furcal? Maybe I’m overvaluing Scutaro, but I think Mortensen is very little to get in exchange for him (even considering his age). I wouldn’t trade Furcal or Scutaro straight up for Mortensen.

In assuming that

The trade was mostly a salary dump for Boston. They are freeing space to pick up Oswalt. The Sox are weak on starting pitching this year anyway, so a mid-level prospect kind of answers a requirement. I assumed Mortenson was only there to keep the commissioners office happy.

FWIW, I think I would have liked Scooter for two years more than Furcal, but that’s just how things play out I guess…

by JWO on Jan 22, 2012 11:19 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I understand that it was a salary dump but I feel like the Red Sox could have (and should have) gotten a better cost-controlled pitcher in return for a starting SS.

Because he was traded, the Rockies take on his salary.

St. Louis bars? Where to start.

If we’re just sticking around downtown…

Broadway Oyster Bar – classic New Orleans blues music and food. One of my best nights out was right here. A crawfish boil was in full swing, the jumbalaya was hearty and spicy, and a great zydeco band was twanging under the covered patio. Add in an electrical storm going on overhead and it was a borderline euphoric evening.

Jack Patrick’s Bar & Grill – Friendly staff who’ll chat awhile if it’s slow. Cheap bottles, good pub grub (I prefer the bacon cheddar burger with horseradish). Three pool tables, table shuffleboard, dartboards and video golf. Rumor has it there’s a washer set in the basement, but I haven’t seen it.

Joey B’s – Delicious thin-crust pizza loaded high and heavy (and featured on Rachel Ray). Some of the nicest bartendresses I’ve met. Over a hundred unique shots on their shot wall. Karaoke on Mondays. DJs on weekends. Free pizza every day during happy hour (I think so. They stopped for awhile because homeless people got wise to it).

Another:

Maurizio’s Pizza – while it has a bar in it, I don’t think I’d designate it as one. It specializes in greasy (but yummy!) pizza either by the pie or, during the day, buffet-style. Maurizio’s is best after 3:00 am. A diverse mix of St. Louisans fill the place up. It’s buzzing but not rowdy as everyone gnashes down on pizza and recounts their evenings. If you’re looking for beer to take back to your hotel late at night, Maurizio’s sells it by the six-pack.

It was too early to be very crowded, but the atmosphere was kind of fun & the pizza was darn good!

Speaking of iTap and food

If you don’t want to bring your own food, they are now attached to a pizza place.

I'm no help with this one.

Even back when I went to bars, they were almost exclusively shitholes. The kind of place that had non-functioning electronic dart boards and pool tables with warped sticks. Places that reeked of stale Bud Light, Marlboros, and despair.

MLB.com loves the Wong
3. Kolten Wong, Cardinals: (…) He has very good speed and should be a threat on the bases. And while most think of a player who is already a second baseman in college as a defensive failure, Wong is quite adept at the position. He’s already on the fast track and may not need more than a year to be ready to help out in St. Louis.

I know there are a lot of jazz clubs in stl

so that part of my music appreciation would be satisfied… but where would one go to see alt-rock, experimental stuff?

the firebird,

the heavy anchor, lemmon’s… not sure where else. most of the places i used to play are now closed (rocket bar, creepy crawl, side door).
melvins and unsane are playing the firebird in may. you should come down for it!

The neighborhood bar here looks pretty outside and in

but all the singing and robe-clad men warning me about the dangers of loose morals and looser women is hardly worth the little bit of watered down wine and stale crackers. Strange hours of operation too.

Hair of the dog is an awesome dive bar.

It’s on Washington, and is a lot cheaper than any other bar around there. Large selection of bottled beers.

Plus it has bubble hockey.

I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

Six row is great, good microbrew and good food

Just dont order tomato soup. It supposed to be a “cold tomato” soup, which means eating salsa with a spoon, but the beer is excellent and most of the food is good

Finally went there a couple weekends ago

Service was pretty bad, the food was decent but the beer was really good.

can't tolerate bad service in a bar ... what's the point of going there if not for a good time, friendly service and interesting conversation with the staff while ordering?

As far as bar food goes though, I do prefer a conversational hiatus during gestation mind you, I know of those who try both … I find it vulgar.

Downtown – Bridge Tap House, Hair of the Dog.
Maplewood – Schlafly.
Soulard – Itap.
The Grove – Handlebar, Gramaphone, Atomic Cowboy. (hipster, but still alright)
Other – Schlafly, Six Row, Plush (new on locust), Sanctuaria, The Royale, Square One Brewery,

I haven't seen any real South Side taverns mentioned.

The following is a list of unpretentious blue collar bars where you can watch a game. Don’t look for food unless it’s chip, peanuts, or TJ’s pizza:

Carondolet
Pooh’s Corner- Virginia & Fillmore
Red’s 8th Inning- Michigan & Holly Hills
Garavaglia’s Hill Top Inn- Morganford & Loughborough
Doc Haus- Morganford & Holly Hills

State Streets
Iowa Buffet-Winnebago & Iowa
Behrmann’s-Meramec & Compton

Misc. South City
Friendly Bar & Grill-Roger Pl. & Potomac
LaRocca’s-Kingshighway & Mardel

I live right next to Friendly's (Oleatha, right by Oak Hill) but have never been inside

What’s it like? I see 101.1 ESPN vans parked outside all the time, I think they broadcast shows from there a lot.

Is Colorado Bob’s Ship of Fools still over there on Morganford? No surprise btu the one time I was in there it was full of old south side weirdos smoking and drinking Natual cans. In other words, awesome.

It’s a bit more of blowout than it used to be. The rest of the bars on this list are straight-up taverns. Friendly’s used to be. And it still has the bar on one side but they took over the building next door and use that as dining room/TV’s/pool tables, etc. However, it’s still definitely a respectable shot-and-a-beer St. Louis tavern.

by badmoth on Jan 26, 2012 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Oh yeah...

And unlike the other places on my list, Friendly’s does have a full menu. Definitely check it out.
