Morning Thread: The Cardinals still don't sign Prince Fielder

I spent most of last night proofreading another project, which leaves me with as little time to write this morning as the Cardinals have left us to talk about. I'll have something for you in the afternoon; in the meantime, I request some total speculation: Who will be the Cardinals' primary second baseman on August 1?

Mostly un-serious answer: Matt Carpenter

Who doesn’t love a position change story?

Mostly serious answer: Daniel Descalso. Either because he will win the job outright or because he’s platooning with Greene, and is left-handed, and therefore will see more PAs since more pitchers are right-handed than left-handed.

I'm writing something related for Future Redbirds right now

but feel the need to compliment the front office. After years of complaining that they are pissing away a million dollars on a backup catcher, we are finally going to use a minor leaguer for that role. This pleases me more than perhaps it should give the dollar amount.

Beware: Velociraptors may be present.

when a team doesn't have an infinitely large payroll

it’s frustrating to watch them continually spend a million dollars a year on a replacement-level veteran who plays less than anyone else on the team.

by DanUpBaby on Jan 20, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't it also about the "philosophy" or the "thought process" or whatever we like to call it?

If the team is willing to deal with problem A in a manner that is more consistent with DanUpBaby’s vision, then perhaps the team will also be steering towards looking at problems B, C, D, etc. in such a way as well.

Problem A might be something not all that important, such as back-up catchers

The other issues might have a much greater impact.

why do we follow the Cardinals so closely? Why do we care that they are paying Skip and K-Mac?

Because we are huge Cardinals fans and want to see the best possible team out there. If money is wasted on the backup catcher’s spot, the seventh infielder/sixth outfielder (or whatever it is they are paying skip to do), and the 12th man in the bullpen, then that means there is less money to upgrade somewhere else. Like adding Roy Oswalt or finding an actual second baseman.

by scoot on Jan 20, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I'll respond to this one

It seems highly unlikely that spending a little too much on a backup catcher will effect any move at all by the Cardinals. Say we pay some dude a million. The minimum salary for a big-league player is $414,000. Are we to believe that an extra six hundred thousand dollars is going to influence any other move the Cardinals make this year?

by Vidor1 on Jan 20, 2012 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily one player

but if you do that with multiple players, such as; K-mac and Skipperdoodle, it adds up.

by scoot on Jan 20, 2012 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

I guess

In theory at least, but in general I think it doesn’t matter very much how many dollars you are giving your bench dudes on one-year contracts. KMac is overpaid, but the problem isn’t that he’s overpaid, because he isn’t being paid all that much for a big-leaguer. The problem is that he’s taking up a spot that could go to a better pitcher. And it might be that a guy like him who isn’t very good but could scuffle along at replacement level will hold that roster spot longer than a Ryan Franklin who gives the front office no choice. So that’s a problem. But I find it hard to believe that whether or not we take a flier on Oswalt will be determined by how much the bench is earning.

by Vidor1 on Jan 20, 2012 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

K-Mac is making $2.5 mil. Replace him with a generic league min guy at .5 mil, you’ve got an extra $2 mil. Same thing with Schu. now we’re up to around $4mil (I forgot how much Skippy is making and Cot’s new layout is blocked at work). That’s about half an Oswalt.

All of this said without mention to the $8 mil going Westy’s way that could easily be Oswalt’s.

I feel like people undervalue McClellan

I’m of the belief that if he had’nt been moved to the starting rotation to start the year last year, he would have been very valuable to our shitty relief corp in April & May and could have saved a few games for us. Not long ago (2010) he was one of the better set-up men on our team. Just my opinion, i’m sure people will now throw in his low K rate to combate it, but I just felt we really missed him in the relief corp last season.

No, an extra .5 - 1 million

by itself probably won’t affect any decision. But roster moves like overpaying a backup catcher don’t occur in a vacuum. A million here, another half a million there, etc etc and it starts to add up to an aggregate figure that does influence front office decision-making.

Let me also say, however, that with a single leap last year, Gerald Laird earned his entire salary as far as I’m concerned.

It's a process thing for me

(and everyone below is making the cumulative effect argument) but there is also a performance argument along with it where I feel like a prospect would be better than some generic veteran. That’s not always the case but it often holds true with relievers and back up catchers.

If he isn’t getting the job done and the other guys are looking healthy, he can be released. Or, if some other team does have an injury. He may have limited trade value. (more than likely just cash or a C prospect.)

I definitely think McClellan is worse than Schumaker,

because having a single inferior hitter in a lineup won’t necessarily kill an inning and having a single inferior outfielder means that perhaps great plays won’t be made, but the routine ones still most likely will be fielded correctly, and the balls have to bit hit in his direction in the first place.

Having a bad pitcher on the mound directly leads to losses.

eh, there's a slight chance we could move McClellan for a non-zero return

whereas Skip is entirely unmovable.

Your last line is a tad specious as well, no offense. Bad fielding from your 2b also directly leads to losses. I think the Skip signing is worse.

skip is at least a lefty bat off the bench (if descalso is the starting 2B against righties). kmac provides virtually nothing. although i will say this: both CONTRACTS are awful. it’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten punto back since he got the exact same contract in boston as skip has here. kmac could easily be replaceable with someone like boggs or sanchez.

Easy answer withTLR was the Shu-man. Hard to guess with new guy. ..

Given MMs background and likely reliance on the Myth of Senior Dunc, my guess would be for D. in a ground-ball encouraged staff. That suggests Descalso unless Greene Tyler shows something otherwise unseen. . . Since Fernando there’s been no significant offense from the second-base position. I am honestly excited for this!

It is always an enjoyable read. Get it done Aranathor.

In a cry for help to all our computer whizzes:

I just tried starting up my desktop and keep getting a blue screen saying that Windows won’t boot up due to unmountable boot service. How the hell do I get around that? I haven’t added any new software to it.

I've got an ethical question

Is it right or wrong to take home leftover office holiday party beer? I’ve been slipping them out a bottle at a time.

If nobody else is drinking it, I don't see why not.

I like this answer.

But, yeah – no one in the office is touching it. It’s Shiner Holiday Cheer beer – delicious when it touches the lips! Plus, stolen beer always tastes better anyhow, amirite.

I think it's unethical to let it go to waste!
