A couple of Koyie Hill's stats from 2009 to 2011

668 PA, .282 OBP, .586 OPS, 55 OPS+, 7.9 BB%, 26.8 K%.
He threw out 36 batters while allowing 92 stolen bases.
Basically, a minor leaguer that should stay there

When the Cardinals won the World Series, Ryan Theriot was batting lead-off.

Shelby miller has stated the obvious

He plans on pitching good enough in spring training that it makes it tough to leave him off the MLB roster.

I say it doesn’t matter. The Cardinals have a full rotation and may not want him to get super 2 status

by SecondHalfMatt on Jan 12, 2012 8:21 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Would love to see that

but doubtful Shelby goes for it. Moore did not get big bonus money when he was drafted, so he had an incentive to take that contract for financial security. Shelby’s already a millionaire.

Yeah, but a gambling habit is a Pandora's box, IMO.

I mean, I’m a semi-degenerate gambler… and if I was a pro athlete I’d ABSOLUTELY bet on my sport with my actual/perceived insider knowledge. Not on my own performances, but definitely on my own sport.

Is this a case of

Matheny trying to send a message of some kind to Cruz and Anderson?

by MdRedbirdFreak on Jan 12, 2012 8:30 AM EST reply actions

Probably

something along the lines of, “Here’s your newest teammate, be better than him.” Except, I doubt Matheny asked for Hill.

Relative to other professional baseball players, yes.

Relative to the general population, I’d say he’s average at baseball.

that's kind of the point, though......

Personally, I hope he’s there just to hold a spot in Memphis keeping other guys from being promoted up before they’re ready. Hope.

He's probably a better defender than Cruz or Anderson, and we traditionally value catcher defense higher than most orgs do?

I guess that’s about all I could say. He’s a pretty appalling hitter and doesn’t have much of an arm, but from pretty much everything I’ve heard he has a good rep for game calling and working with pitchers (like Jason LaRue with an even weaker bat, I guess). Either way, I really can’t get too bothered about this signing. I’m guessing Hill/Anderson/Cruz are all pretty much replacement level.

Still bitching to contact.

I’m not totally unhappy with the idea of a grizzled veteran being at Memphis to work with the young pitchers. This is about more than just being a backup catcher.

I really think the first significant snowfall always causes problems

And this is pretty late in winter to have such a snowfall. I’m all for criticizing St. Louis drivers for a multitude of reasons (the casual attitude about red lights, the St. Louis roll, the inability to properly navigate flashing stoplights, the old people who wave me through intersections even though it’s their turn, which only disrupts the system, etc.) but I can’t complain too much about today’s snow.

At least we're not like chicago drivers

who drive as though they are about to take the world’s biggest dump, and the closest bathroom is 100 miles away. Absolute fury at anyone in their way. I’m generalizing of course.

I actually agree with both of these

For a while I thought every city was pretty much the same, but I do think different cities could actually have somewhat different “styles” of bad driving. Chicago made me think that people were either trying to kill me or kill themselves.

I think it's the bottlenecks.

I read somewhere that like out of the ten worst bottlenecks in the US, 4 of them are in Chicago. And the 4 might have been in like the top 5 or 7 in the rankings.

But, I’ve never had any trouble having people let me merge. My biggest complaints are the gawkers delays (but that’s probably everywhere), and people changing into the same lane I’m changing into but not noticing when they are the one’s further back.

In other words. Let’s say you’ve got 3 lanes. I’m in the left lane, and Driver B is in the right lane. Middle lane is open. I’m about a car’s length, maybe less, ahead of Driver B and we both start to switch to the middle lane at the same time. Obviously it’s harder for me to see Driver B switching lanes than it is for Driver B to see me since I’m right in front of him. Unfortunately, the rule of thumb around here seems to be, if you’re the behind car (Driver B), is to gun it past and just figure I’ll notice and swerve out of the way.

Happens all the time.

This life's hard, man, but it's harder if you're stupid.

gawkers delays are pretty bad in STL too

the one that frustrates me is most is when motorists are gawking at something that happens in the opposite lanes of travel.

This is particularly bad on 270. Say there’s an accident on the southbound lanes, the traffic on the northbound side will back up because people slow down to see whats going on.

I can't remember all the highways in Dallas that I used to drive on

But I especially hated when 113 and 183 merged together. In Dallas, they don’t seem to believe in giving people lanes to merge, they just abruptly fuse lanes into each other. Same thing with a lot of entrance ramps. Also, I hated exit ramps, since the access road is supposed to yield to the ramp. This took some getting used to.

While some are formed geologically independent of continental land masses.

Most recently formed volcanic islands (hawaii, most of the south pacific) are not fragments of continental land masses, but form separately. They are not typically considered a continent.

Yes, he was.

Right, but the cardinals have three healthy catchers already on the 40-man roster so I find it unlikely that the club puts Hill on it or the 25-man especially when Hill is much, much worse than any of the other three catchers.

Honestly, I truly believe it's to hold the roster spot in AAA since

either Anderson or Cruz (whichever doesn’t make the MLB roster) will get the majority of AAA playing time. By having a guy like Koyie Hill (who is a good catcher), you don’t have to promote Steve Hill or Travis Tartamella or Audry Perez to sit the bench when regular playing time at a lower level is what they need.

But wait. Isn’t Steve Hill already on Memphis? He could be the backup, right?

Okay. I’m not sure where Koyie fits, but it does seem to be a bit of a logjam unless Steve Hill is all of a sudden going to start playing another position again.

But...

If you pay to own something, you are building equity which is valuable after the month is over. If you pay to rent, then all you are getting is the time, which expires at the end of each month.

tell that to the people who bought houses in 2006

I smacked Rickey right in the face when he told me this idea.

by Hootie Who on Jan 12, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, that was an unfortunate situation.

Over the 30 months (hypothetical) between the time you buy in ’06 and the time the market crashed in ’08 you accrue a certain level of value from making payments.

I’m not trying to make a case for assuming house appreciation, because that was an obvious flaw from this past disaster. My point if you assume a $1k rent then you have “saved” $30k over renting.

In order to lose money, your house value would have to depreciate not only past the level you bought it at (if it had appreciated), but also $30k past that. That is not to say there is no risk. But as with everything, it is important to weigh the risk against the reward (but yes, keep in mind that the real estate crash isn’t exactly as frequent as, say, the energy spikes)

by RasmustheRipper on Jan 12, 2012 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

you don't have 30K since most of that is interest in the first 2 1/2 years

You’d be lucky to have 10K of equity. Lots of houses lost that much.

I agree that the housing bubble and subsequent crash aren’t that common. People should only buy a house they intend on living in it for at least 5 years, maybe 10 years these days. Houses are good long term investments in that they generally are a good hedge against inflation.

I smacked Rickey right in the face when he told me this idea.

by Hootie Who on Jan 12, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that it is absolutely a long term investment

I should have used interest in the conversation but I was admittedly lazy. Are the first 2-3 years really ~2/3 interest? That seems a bit high. I agree with what you have said, I guess I just don’t think its reasonable to prefer renting (financially) when both options are equally feasible, unless you are really risk adversed.

by RasmustheRipper on Jan 12, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

plus, with the way the job market is nowadays

I can’t see myself tied to any location for any period of time (and I’m a teacher!!)

I have a friend who owns a townhome in the Peoria area (also a teacher). She got pinkslipped every year for her first 4 years as a teacher but luckily got her job back when everything settled and the budgets were hashed out. I tried to convince her to move up near me because, while its not fantastic, the education job prospects are better around Chicago than they are in Peoria. But she couldn’t because she was anchored to a property she couldn’t sell.

Fortunately for her, she’s now tenured (another discussion for another time) so she shouldn’t have to be concerned with it anymore, but in all honesty, that’s not a guarantee either. Last year, a school district in north central Illinois (a pretty sizeable one too) fired all teachers under 7 years of service. Tenure starts the 4th year, but due to budget cuts, the school board forced the firing. Now a lot of them eventually got their jobs back, but some didn’t. So there really are no guarantees.

but it’s a lot less than if I owned the property. Technically, I don’t pay for gas or water either, but we all know ultimately it’s kind of worked into the rent.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jan 12, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

He's just another spring training catcher.

Don’t they always bring in guys like this to catch the abundance of pitchers throwing early in spring? There’s nothing really in his career that makes him look like a competent starter or even a competent backup. I’d be shocked if he makes all the way through Spring Training without being released or reassigned to the minors. I’m not losing any sleep or popping any extra Tums over this one….

by KSCardinal on Jan 12, 2012 10:25 AM EST reply actions

Wow, Koyie Hill is 32.

Didn’t realize he’d been around so long.

Also, career -1.3 fWAR.

I just can’t see him as anything other than a backup in Memphis. Between Hill, Anderson, and Cruz I don’t even know if he fits there. I know the guys in Springfield are young, and they probably wouldn’t want to bump those guys up if something happened, but I don’t see where Koyie plays in the interim.

Issue is...

the regular old salt only works down to a certain temperature. I’m not sure where you guys up there are, but down here in Springfield we’re sitting at a 5 degree wind chill. Salt doesn’t do anything when it’s that cold.
