St. Louis Eats

Gerald Laird excited for some St. Louis food!

Good Thing: Cardinals won yesterday against the Reds.

Bad Thing: Corey Patterson got ANOTHER at bat.

Predictable Thing: Corey Patterson struck out.

Good Thing: Jaime Garcia struck out 6 in 6 innings.

Bad Thing: Arthur Rhodes coughed up a HR to Jay Bruce.

Good Thing: Ryan Theriot was not playing shortstop.

Bad Thing: Neither was Tyler Greene.

I'm bored with a team that's only called up a couple of players when they are obviously out of it in September. Show me the kids. Now, the long awaited part one to what will eventually be VEB's Guide to the Lou.  Feel free to chat amongst yourselves but if there's any comments on the format of the guide, I'll check back for those and take them into consideration.

If there's a food joint that I left off and you feel strongly about, leave a comment on that as well as WHY you like it. (I could use some extra details on the ethnic recommendations from the original thread -- namely the Thai and German.)  I haven't eaten everywhere people. Try and keep it near the ballpark or downtown STL. Original thread.  Not everyone's going to agree on what does and doesn't make the list but I don't want to leave off anything really good.

Star-divide

Type of Food: Sushi

Restaurant: Wasabi

Within Walking Distance of Busch Stadium: Kinda; 2.4 mi (map)

Restaurant: Bogart's

Why You Should Go: It's the best BBQ in St. Louis. You'll find a lengthy line at Pappy's every day at lunch -- so much so that the owners opened another restaurant called Bogarts. Same great BBQ. Limited seating.

Location: 5000 block of Shaw Hill and adjacent Streets
Within Walking Distance of Busch Stadium: No; ~5 mi (map)

Are there any kids to call up?

Greene is what, 28? I guess Carpenter is 25 but to me a “kid” is less than that.

They did call up Cleito, who is 22. But given his horrible walk rate, I can only think they are trying to show how great the Ryan deal was by forcing Cleito to the majors before he’s ready.

And I’ve said it before – don’t judge St. Louis style pizza by Imo’s. It’s the McDonald’s of St. Louis style pizza (and Cecil Whitaker’s being the Arby’s)

Had the thicker crust pizza at Imos? It’s truly scrumtrulescent! Plus don’t forget about that St Louis tradition of the Outback Steakhouse!

I hope pizza can be much deeper including Blackthorne and Rigazzi's

I don’t see sandwiches which could Atleast include Amaghettis and Blues City Deli. Also if it’s VEB’s guide any Cardinal nation food list is incomplete without oyster bar. And if we do fast food we can include Lions Choice. Also Courtesy Diner for breakfast.

Also, since some of us live out in surrounding suburbia, I will be the voice of Franklin County and say that Aldo’s for itialian/pizza and Basket for sandwiches in Washington are both great. Bugsy’s for stuffed mushrooms or salad in Union is really good and while Krakow store in Krakow has better biscuits and gravy, Rothschild’s in Washington is the best breakfast place I’ve ever found. It’s better than Uncle Bills or Courtesy Diner and it’s not even close. If anyone has shout outs for other areas like North or South county, St Charles County, or the east side that may be helpful to other outliers in the area

I'm not willing to say they're out of it until after the Brewers series.

If they sweep again, they’re still in it. If not, I’m ready to play the kids….or what kids there are….or, I suppose, anyone on the 40 man roster not named Corey Patterson or Ryan Theriot.

Or, former Cubs…..if that makes it easier.

(Just off the top of my head, I can’t think of any other former cubs on the roster)

A couple of things:

1) Pi is opening up a downtown location in the new Mercantile Exchange at 600 Washington (formerly St. Louis Center).

2) Regarding Crown Candy, let people make their own damn decision whether it’s too dangerous a walk/bike ride. The trek to Old North is no more dangerous than a walk down Broadway to the brewery or along Euclid in the CWE. It’s time to kill the “don’t-go-past-Cass” mentality.

3) Charlie Gitto’s…mmm. Try the chicken Parmesan or the meatloaf. But the best toasted ravioli definitely goes to Caleco’s (Chestnut and Broadway)

4) Best brunch spot – Lola on 14th and St. Charles. Three words: Chicken. And. Waffles.

I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

I guess that’s true unless you consider being murdered “more dangerous,” since statistically you’re, like, way more like to get murdered in North City. You don’t have to take my word for it either, the STL-PD plots the locations of all murders in STL. That sea of red dots? North city.

That doesn’t mean it’s likely that something bad will happen to you if you go to Crown Candy, but it would be irresponsible not to at least warn potential visitors.

I’ll also respectfully disagree with you on the toasted ravioli. I say Lombardo’s.

Forever a Cards fan

I just do not live close to St Louis anymore. I used to call Ozzie’s before my trip up, but has been awhile. Live in Atl now, the Braves are aging fast and their playoff hopes rest on Bourne’s steals and McCann’s bat. We just need Carp to actually have 2 or 3 decent games. He has stunk, been a Double A pitcher at best.

by Cardslifer on Sep 4, 2011 10:15 AM EDT reply actions

is it just my Carp loving bias making this statement

If I knew how many errors have been made with carp on the mound I could answer this.

the league average fielding percentage being .977 gives you an idea of league average.
/league average team has allowed 3825 balls in play with 86 errors.

Carp has allowed 633 balls in play with ??? errors.

Carp's last 10 starts

Carps averaging 3.1 runs in 6.8 innings over his last 10 starts. Not what you’d like to see out of your ace and two 6 run outings when the Brewers are killing it. Sounds like he has lost it under pressure. Hope the renogotiate him down to 6 mil/yr or buy him out. Trade Holiday and that massive $17 mil contract. Omg. What is that – almost $1 mil per HR anymore, then Albert will be asking for $45 per.

Playoff chances are at about 2 percent right now per Baseball Prospectus

And for what’s it worth, we are 5 times more likely to win the wild card then the division. TIme to start worrying about Atlanta more than the BrewCrew.

And, for what it’s worth, Atlanta lost yesterday while the Cradinals won.

And, for what it’s worth, we do have a 3 game series with Atlanta next weekend at Busch.

Wowzers.

Also, Grienke has a 3.4 WAR in 141 innings, and he leads the NL in K/9 (10.67) and xFIP (2.48).

And I knew he’d been very much not-sucky, but I didn’t realize just how good he’d been. 4+ WAR out of a 36-year old pitcher. That’s some nice value.

I have found it interesting that he’s not been his unsucky self in the two games since Tony pulled him and they blew it. I realize this is no revelation, just interesting.

I just realized if I had to write down all the pitching prospects the Braves have had the past 4 years (i probably can't do it without research)

I would be extremely disappointed with this organization and probably every other team as well.

Nah...the Cards have been churning out some solid relievers and the starters are on the way.

McClellan
Boggs
Motte
Sanchez
Salas
Lynn
Garcia
Miller
Martinez

Certainly not on par with the Braves, but nothing to be disappointed about even when comparing it to ATL.

eh, most of the guys I was thinking about would be good starters on any team if given a shot

Garcia, Martinez, and Miller are probably the only 3 I would consider(maybe lynn) if I compared it to the braves list.

Well done, Azru

I think you’ve covered the basics well. I hate when these lists get so bloated that I feel like I need another list just to tell me what the best places on the original list are. The only thi8ng I’d add is maybe a bar category.

I think when the term “kids” is used it is meant for the 28-year old Tyler Green and Adron Chambers. Not really much to see in AAA. Cleto got called up, but I don’t think anyone really cares to see him mess up our nice clean bullpen.

Trading Ottavino

Per Goold:

First-round pick and Class AAA starter Adam Ottavino spent all of the season in limbo and could find his next opportunity with another club. The righty went 6-8 with a 5.04 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) for Triple-A Memphis, though he could not regain his spot on the 40-man roster. According to multiple sources, there appears to mutual interest in finding a suitable trade that will allow Ottavino to open 2012 with another team.
