If the Cards ever decide to start hitting again

And Lohse gets the win, isn’t he our most valuable pitcher this season?

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

wins hardly describe good year

what about run support factoring into tough losses?

because TLR

by punchinjudy on Sep 24, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I guess so. You think Garcia and Carp have been more valuable

and I’m just wondering why? I know there are any number of advanced stats, but I am wondering which indicate Garcia and Carp more valuable. Not trying to pick a fight, just curious about it.

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

wins above replacement

fielding independent pitching

and K and BB rates all like jaime and carp more. lohse has had a pretty good season, though

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the advanced stats

but when at the end of the year you are talking about value to the team was in the past (not what they are likely to do next year) who cares what the peripherals were, give me ERA. (at least I didnt say wins)

by redbirds34 on Sep 24, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm okay with using ERA

but you also have to account for the fact that lohse has pitch the fewest innings of any of the top 3 and significantly fewer than carp. all their ERAs are pretty similar

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

a pitcher's win/loss record is way too dependent

upon factors beyond the pitcher’s control that it just doesn’t measure how good the pitcher is

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. But again, I'm asking about "most valuable" not necessarily "best."

Lohse has held opponents to the lower BA of any of our starters, pitched about as many innings of any except Carpenter (who i don’t think has missed a start). I’m not disrespecting Garcia or Carp to suggest Kyle has been more valuable, but I guess Kyle has been babied a bit in the latter part of the season, getting additional rest between starts.

Of course, the entire thing is premised on him getting to 15 wins, and they don’t seem interested in getting that for him today.

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Well in that case

if he only wins 14 he is not nearly as valuable as if he wins 15.

You just made everyone’s argument with the fact that wins are dependent on the rest of the team.

by redbirds34 on Sep 24, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Dependent, yes, but not totally dependent

How the pitcher pitches has some influence on it.

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So, when the team wins 15 games behind one pitcher

and the same team wins 10 games behind a different pitcher, the pitcher that leads the team to 15 wins is less valuable?

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

he can be, Im sure there are

dozens of examples of this happening, but Im too lazy to look it up. I thought this argument was settled circa 2002?

by redbirds34 on Sep 24, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

i didn't say that

i’m saying that it’s unwise to draw any conclusions about how good a pitcher is based on the pitcher’s W/L record

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

well, delineating between best and most valuable makes no sense to me

unless we’re we’re considering per-dollar value, which i don’t see any point in

so maybe you can explain how you’re differentiating best from most valuable

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

to me

and i’m not the one who brought it up, when it comes to pitching most valuable equals best performance of a longer period of time. If a pitchers highs a slightly better FIP, tRA, and ERA; yet has 10-15 less innings, he might not be as valuable. However; if he has a significantly better FIP, tRA, and ERA, and only slightly less innnings, he might be most valuable.

But it’s not always cut and dry when pitchers are close.

Grit != flat out sucking.

by Evilfrog on Sep 24, 2011 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

pretty much

WAR is a measurement of Value. Only argument would be if two pitchers WAR are very close, say 4.3 and 4.2, you can say the pitcher with 4.2 might actually be more valuable because you personally value a stat that the “4.2” pitcher has over the the “4.3” pitcher more than the WAR calculation does.

Grit != flat out sucking.

by Evilfrog on Sep 24, 2011 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm thinking old school here. The team goal is most wins

So I look at this as a valuable stat. If Lohse wins today, he’s been the pitcher in >1/6th of the teams wins. That’s not inconsequential to me.

He’s also given up 16 and 18 fewer runs to the opposing team than Garcia and Carp. Is that of no value to consider either?

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

team goal being most wins isn't old school

team wins is a pretty good way to evaluate performance. performance of the entire team, that is.

if lohse loses 1-0 today, how is the ‘L’ in any way representative of how he pitched today?

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

he's pitched 50 fewer innings than carp

garcia has also seen a disproportionate number of errors behind him leading to unearned runs

non-antiquated stats don’t make you look for these systematic biases, though. they just tell you how well the pitcher performed, removed from the context of his own team

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Does removing a pitcher from the context of his team

Measures his value to the team, or how good or bad his own individual performance has been?

by BCinVA on Sep 24, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

well, i don't know how to separate good and valuable

so removing a pitcher from the context of his team tells you how good he has been and also how valuable he would be to his or any other team

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

so

if he loses today 1-0, he’s less valuable than if he gets the win for a 2-1 game?

by prophetjohn on Sep 24, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Fangraphs has BA

Carp: 2.66
Loshe: 2.71

and it really isn’t as reliable a metric as FIP, which is especially true given our error prone infield.
Also, just curious, what’s the difference in “most valuable” and “best?” Given their respective contracts, I’d be hard-pressed to argue Loshe is a better value.

more to value then just ERA

Carpenter has pitched nearly six more games worth of innings in 4 more starts. That is a lot of innings that aren’t being pitched by relief pitchers, he has better k/9, hits/9, hr/9, and a lower bb/9.

There is no argument that Lohse has been better than Carpenter.

Grit != flat out sucking.

by Evilfrog on Sep 24, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

um

Carpenter has pitched 40 more innings, has 73 more strike outs, 2 more complete games, only 12 more BB (only 8 more if you exclude IBBs) and has given up the same amount of HRs

Garcia has pitched 9 more innings, has struck out 49 more batters, walked 7 more, has a lower ERA, FIP, higher WAR, etc…

Both have been better pitchers in pretty much every category except “number of runs the offense gives or number of blown games by the bullpen”

I have a question from gameday - it showed CPat batting 2nd

but replaced by Scrabble as pitcher. Yet Motte was also batting 9th as pitcher. Now it shows Craig as PH in the 2nd spot, and Patterson in the 9th.

Someone. Please for to explain.

Did TLR finally kill the gameday staff?

seriously, we just doubled down on both chris carpenter and lance berkman, which makes retaining pujols or signing other free agents a huge budgetary issue, even without paying jackson an eight figure amount.

moreover, jackson will almost certainly want a 4 or 5y deal. we are committed to carp and waino through 2013, garcia through 2015, and we are bubbling with starting pitching prospects. why would we want to commit ourselves to paying a ton of money to a good but not great pitcher through 2015 or 2016 right now?

Looking at probable pitching matchups for

us and Atlanta, maybe our most interesting matchup is Jaime vs. Wandy Monday night, but overall it looks like they’re either fairly even or favor us. The opposite is true for Atlanta, especially if Philly really is going to throw Lee, Oswalt, and Hamels at them – I’d think the matchup favors their opponent in all four of their final games, although Hamels vs. Hudson on the last day could be pretty interesting. It’s obviously still a long shot, but we have a couple things in our favor at least.
