They do break your heart at times.
But I didn’t figure they’d be in it this late in the season, so I don’t think they can really disappoint me. This season probably ends with an Albert GIDP and the bullpen giving up a walk-off homer.

Pedometers are actually really useful for certain people
My wife and a classmate of hers in med school helped one of the geriatricians run this pedometer study for a couple years. They can be really good for people who otherwise would fall into not getting enough physical activity, so the elderly are a great population to use them with. It helps keep track and can become a motivation tool.

Re: Craig's tortoise
I have a pet tortoise. It doesn’t really have a name. We just call him Tortie. We just recently found out that he is a boy, because you can’t tell their sex for three or four years. We got him when he was just a baby (the size of a baseball), and now he’s this big (about the size of two basketballs).

Regarding the Cubs thrilling 2014 9-game world series win over the Miami Gators in Back to the Future II:
Because of that film, and the large and loyal Cubs fanbase, the Vegas odds for the Cubs winning the World Series are pretty much always set high (meaning low payout). So thanks to BttF, if the Cubs win it all — regardless of how futile they look on paper — the fans who bet on them don’t get squat (comparatively).
I’d like to think Bob Gale (BttF screenwriter and University City resident) wrote that in intentionally…just to slightly sully an eventual Cubs championship.

exactly
that actually expresses an opinion, even if it’s one that was just acquiesced to and not actually deliberated upon. “It is what it is” expresses no value judgment about anything. Of course it is what it is. It is meaningless redundancy that is supposed to have some sort of simple profoundness to it, when it clearly does not. Aggghhhh it makes me so mad.

Right, it rolls off the tongue
Tis what tis. This saying gets a lot of flack for being tautological, but that’s the whole point of the damn statement. Makes no sense.
even if that's the intended meaning, what the fuck does that mean
there’s plenty of shit you can do about something that happens, the very least of which is to have some sort of emotional or cognitive reaction to it. “It is what it is” is just unfeeling, unthinking, uncommunicative, inconsequential bullshit.
So wow, apparently this is capable of getting me kind of worked up
My favorite words are goodbye, and my favorite color is red
So just say that. Open your mouth and speak the words, "I accept that."
maybe it means the same thing from a functional standpoint, I guess I just prefer the formalism of people speaking their minds rather than using tired cliches.
My favorite words are goodbye, and my favorite color is red
So you would prefer that instead of having any linguistic expressions or idioms, we all spoke like robots
Using worlds that explicitly meant exactly what we’re trying to express, but in a completely direct and lawyerly way.
That sounds shitty to me, but okay.
"using words that mean exactly what we're trying to express"
yes, that it what I’m saying. I have no preference that people do it in “lawyerly” way.
I don’t see how canned cliches like “it is what is is” enhance your ability to say exactly what you’re trying to say. It seems to me it could only detract from it mosyt of the time.
Also, this is a stupid argument.
My favorite words are goodbye, and my favorite color is red
But what the hell, keep it going.
“It is what it is” adds nothing to the beauty, the idiomatic richness, the nuance, the expressiveness of English.

The only gen-ed I really need to take are 5 things of Spanish, and then 2 science courses. The rest I can pretty much fill with electives.
Are you taking any writing courses?

Two kind of.
English 1000 which is I enjoy. First essay was a rhetorical analysis on a John Kerry anti-Vietnam War speech which I did well on. Now, we’re reading a book called Quiet American, which is interesting.
And British Literature which just sucks.

Mizzou can be quite challenging if you want it to be. It's all about what you put into it.
(I’m not knocking you at all, fan4. I think it’s quite a good idea to take easy gen ed stuff your first semester)
Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?

oooh, Schlafly porter sounds interesting. Never had it before.

It's pretty good
I really like porters, also. I am very satisfied with it. Not as good as their smoked porter, but that is only available at the Tap Room so far as I can tell.

I heard recently that Schlafly is looking for a buyer (has it been sold yet?)
because no one in the family in interested in taking over. That sounds nuts to me, although I’m sure running a brewery is not the fantasy willy wonka experience I’ve dreamed it up to be (for instance, I’m assuming there is not any actual beer river inside the factory)

Well I just got depressed
Isn’t implied that Jenny had AIDS in Forrest Gump? Wouldn’t that mean Forrest got it too? And also Forrest Jr?

Contrary to some circles of belief, you can't actually "imply" AIDS
you have to have sex

HIV transmission rates from vaginal sex are somewhere around 0.05% and 0.1%
and transmission from mother-to-child is 25% if no preventative drugs are used

Interesting dynamic: The Phillies may be able to dictate their playoff opponent. And I frankly don’t believe they are took keen on facing the Cardinals in a best-of-five after losing 6 of 9 to them during the regular season.
not that i think the phillies will shit the bed intentionally to face the dbacks, but it is interesting
What about that "Wouldn't be fair to the Cardinals or the Braves" line?
"You can't help them score points; they do that on their own."
Gee, I wouldn't be too keen about playing a series...
In which I could start Roy Hallaway and Cliff Lee up to 4 times, with a helping of Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt on the side.

I mean, if we actually do this thing (big if), I'd love to get the Phils again.
But I wouldn’t be too optimistic no matter how well we’ve been playing.

pretend the cards make the playoffs
what order does tony use the starters?
guessing:
carpenter
garcia
jackson
lohse
does westbrook make the roster?
That seems about right
Depending on what happens this next week, Lohse and Jackson could switch. Westbrook probably doesn’t make the roster.
