cardinals beat phillies, move to 2.5 games out of the wild card

"oh yeah? you gonna rejigger the rotation, tony? rejigger this."

9 games remain for the cardinals.

in an improbable matchup, kyle lohse pitches a 1-run, 7.1 inning, 5 strikeout, 1 walk gem, facing up against one of the best lineups in baseball and one of the best pitchers in baseball. he also hit a double and scored a run.

omar infante sez to atlanta: how you like your uggla now?

ryan theriot experiences delusions of adequacy.

another shaky performance from jason motte, allowing two runs in a very tight, very important game. he's still a great reliever, but tony la russa seems to have a "what have you done for me lately" attitude towards relievers who don't remember jimmy carter (see, boggs, mitchell; salas, fernando).

octavio dotel comes through with the final out after motte and (who else?) arthur rhodes could not seal the deal.

it's a surprisingly exciting finish to an up-and-down season.

On Aug 24, the Cards were

10 GB in the NL Central and 10.5 GB for the Wild Card and their playoff chances weren’t worth a warm bucket of spit.

that doesn't really fill me with confidence.

hell, I’m 5’9 and I really don’t think I’d get too excited about somebody like me playing baseball unless I’m a catcher.

I see your point

but it’s not just height. Height turns into length when going for a ball. it turns into a greater stride distance in running. just saying that if I have a choice between a guy 5’9 and a guy 6’2, with all things being equal, I’m picking the 6’2 guy.

oh, no doubt. but the draft rarely presents us with that abstract circumstance.

so, you take kolten wong because he has a good swing at a defensively important spot, despite his height.

I'm not arguing against whether or not they're any good.

I’m sure that they’re all very good players, I just was hoping for a bit more than a team of Ecksteins. You usually don’t get shorter players that hit for avg and power like a Holliday or Pujols or Berkman. I know that both Victorino, pedroia, Uggla and a few others kinda defy that but not by much. I also realize that H,P & B are extremes the other way but I think you know what I’m getting at. Besides Uggla, what other power hitter of that magnitude is what you could call short? And Uggla has had a rather down season with the bat other than going yard.

On the other hand,

if we had a bunch of short bastards that could hit, take walks, play defense, and hit 10-15 HRs apiece, I could learn to live with it.

stride distance is overrated

I’ve seen plenty of short sprinters that make up for it with a quick turnover. Let me see them run a 40 before we say that they’re too short to run fast.

the Braves have 8 games left; the Cards have 9

The Braves’ magic number is 7. If we go 6-3, the Braves only need to win 4 games in order to clinch.

San Francisco is not yet mathematically eliminated, but their odds are really tiny because they need not one but two teams ahead of them to fall apart.

If—if—the Cards manage to pull off a WC berth, they would face the Phillies.

I believe in momentum and it is clearly on our side

The Braves are now playing tight and scared, a deadly combination. Meanwhile, the Cards are almost licking their lips for the chance to get on the field; they finally have that swagger we expected to see from them three months ago.

Thank gob!!

Braves are in a tailspin!

Here in Atlanta I began to get excited when the Braves announced that post season tickets would go on sale the day after the Cardinals series, I could almost see the sweep a week in advance, I began to warn Braves fans of thier impending doom. Low and behold the footsteps are loud now in the ATL.
Here’s to the Cards, just win boys. The Braves will take care of the rest.

Until I saw this morning that the Marlins won in a walk off that is (we go to bed really early and wake up really early). At that point I actually became excited.

At 5.5 games back in the division and 2.5 behind the wild card leader with 9 to play, the Cardinals playoff odds currently stand at… 17.7% Actually that’s not too bad.
