Game 153: St. Louis Cardinals @ Philadelphia Phillies, Sept. 19, 2011, 6:05 PM CDT
Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard received a cortisone injection as treatment for bursitis in his left ankle. Howard therefore will not play tonight. Despite his assertion that he wants the Phillies' best lineup, this news is likely music to Tony La Russa's ears. Long a believer in the small sample sized head-to-head matchup splits, La Russa is likely very aware of Howard's .500 BA./.600 OBP/.875 SLG/1.475 OPS line over 20 PA against Kyle Lohse. And even though I don't place near as much stock in head-to-head splits as the field manager, after viewing this line, even I am somewhat relieved that Lohse won't be tossing the ball toward the plate tonight with Howard attempting to mash it.
The Wild Card frontrunning Braves square off tonight against the Marlins. Southpaw Mike Minor gets the start for Atlanta while Florida will send Ricky Nolasco to the hill. The Braves lead the Redbirds in the Wild Card standings by 3.5 games heading into action tonight.
Here are the starting pitchers for the Cards and Phils, with an appropriately ominous picture of Doc Halladay...

According to the mothership, it'll be
Pelfrey vs. Jackson
Schwinden vs. Garcia
Capuano vs. Westbrook
Still not a werewolf.
winnable series
we need to take 2 of those games.

7-2 isn't totally crazy
given that we have 6 at home vs the Mets and Cubs, and 3 in Houston

I think that's a general TLR tendency
get up for the big games, get swept in late July/early August against sub 500 teams.
A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
and given that we've gone 10-2 over the last 12.
Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?
I don't like thinking or mathematizing them numbers
how about we just win our next 3 games and the Braves lose theirs
My favorite words are goodbye, and my favorite color is red
but see then we need to keep winning and they need to keep losing
its complicated

and say that team has seen more pitches than any team in history. Might be wrong, but I bet they’re up there. They routinely make the opposition throw 200 pitches and sometimes 230.

brewers keep losing, dbacks might get homefield advantage
