Saturday Thread 9/17

(Apologies to the usual post crew, but I'm going to write a little something of my own today, both as a view of this season and a little future-journalist practice. I might try to be a future post writer for VEB, but for now, this is just a little something.)

When thinking about this season, I'm quick to remember the many frustrations, between roster management, bullpen management, and the ups and downs of the games.

I have pretty much refused to watch the games for the better part of three weeks now, because I had reached the point of frustration to the stage where I couldn't stand it anymore. I have grown tired of Tony's reign and the daily rollercoaster games. I am keeping my hopes up about the Wild Card, but like a lot of others, I will be very frustrated if the team falls short.

I'm one of the fans that believes that TLR has had his time and needs to go. This season's roster management (trading Colby, Corey F. Patterson, the bullpen, etc.) has been proof to me that he has had his run. Even though I was a personal advocate of trading Colby, I mostly was for it because of the rift between him and TLR. TLR was going to have his way, and it was going to end ugly. Sure enough, it did. I am pretty sure there are more than a few Cardinals fans - and some VEBers - who are sick of it.

The questions would be there for next year, sure - what would happen with Dunc or Albert if Tony left, but in my mind, TLR's ways of managing are hurting the team's chances to win. Hell, the team just had its first 5 game winning streak of the SEASON earlier this week, and they've only had a handful of sweeps in series because of Tony's "let's just win the series" mentality. I saw something in one of the threads the other day about a tweet from ESPN's Jayson Stark, that if it weren't for TLR's micro-managing, the Cards would be up 4 1/2 in the Central instead of behind.

It's been a good run, but it's time for a change.

I hear ya, Zoom

Opening Day BP: Bryan Augenstein, Miguel Batista, Mitchell Boggs, Ryan Franklin, Trever Miller, Jason Motte, Brian Tallet
Current BP (before callups) : Boggs, Octavio Dotel, K Mac, Motte, Rhodes,Scrabble, Salas.

There’s at least six blown saves/losses in the first month that would put us in the lead in the WC and/or possibly the division. Even if we converted only 3 of those into wins, we’re basically tied w/ATL.

So in spite of losing Wainwright, trading away defense (Boog), mortgaging the future (Raz), injuries to Freese, Pujols, and Holliday, AND the Brewers having a career season, it’s easy to envision the Cards in the playoffs with better roster management of the bullpen. This season is a textbook example of why games in April as just as important as games in September.

While there is no question

that Tony has done a horrendous job of managing this team, I will give him credit for not letting this team give up. It seemed like when the team was really down and out (over 10 games back), Tony was the only one on the planet who continued to say the Cards still had a chance. While the chances of making the playoffs are still slim, these last couple weeks have certainly been entertaining, if not just infuriating. Even if the Cards don’t make the playoffs, I feel like we’ve been treated to near playoff-like intensity.

When all is said and done, and we just barely miss the playoffs, there is going to be a lot of things that we can point to as the reason why, but in the end it’ll be undeniable that Tony just fucked it up. 119 mostly ineffective appearances by Franklin, Batista, Miller, Tallett, and Rhodes. 118 mostly ineffective appearances by Ryan Theriot. Repeatedly pulling players like Lance Berkman, David Freese, and Allen Craig in the late innings, even though we only had a 1 or 2 run lead and then wound up in extra innings without some of our biggest bats. Corey Patterson with about 300 9th inning at bats with the game on the line. The JV lineups on the 3rd game of the series after winning the first 2 games – how do you expect to have a prolonged winning streak when you don’t play your best lineup for a prolonged period of time?

To be fair, Johnny Mo deserves some of the heat as well. After all, he is responsible for the players who are on the roster (supposedly), just not how they are used. He should have cut the cord on Franklin and Batista long before he did. He should’ve never let Augenstein and Batista make the roster over Salas and Sanchez. He should’ve never assumed that Ryan Theriot was a starting SS (I was crying “dooooomed” when I first heard about this late last year). There is still not a reason in the world for having Corey Patterson on the roster at all – this is like keeping heroin stored in the home of someone you know is a heroin addict. You know its gonna get used. Same goes for Rhodes.

Injuries also gutted this team of Waino, Holliday, Freese, Craig, Pujols, and others….but this is clearly no excuse.

Great quote from Corey Patterson
“A lot of guys may not get to that ball. But, for me, I’ve got to catch that ball,” said Patterson, who had the ball pop from the palm of his glove. “I just dropped it. I may have gotten to it a little quicker than I thought.”

Got to love a guy who screws up, and then blames it on his incredible speed. Kind of reminds me of all the job interviews where I give half-assed reasons as to why my weaknesses are really strengths.

Cheer up VEB

3.5 games out of the playoffs. Outlook is much better than it was a two weeks ago.

Grit != flat out sucking.

This is the closest we've been

since being 3 games back of the Brewers on Aug. 8. (Patterson started on Aug. 9)

Man I wish we could play anyone but the Phils right now

although I guess if we made the playoffs we’d have to play them anyways.

YES! THIS!

There’ll be plenty of time for a post-mort after the season. Let’s enjoy the moment, shall we?

Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?

this situation right now is a lot like the eastern michigan-michigan football game

i’ve been a diehard UM fan all my life but i’m an eastern student. i feel conflicted on TLR and i’m proud of his past success, but the fact that we haven’t been to the playoffs in 5 years and are on the verge of either shocking the world and getting in or being so close and so frustrated is driving me crazy.

Put the frustration aside for 2 weeks.

We’re in an unexpected playoff race. Enjoy the ride, which ought to be especially easy to do because our expectations for the end of the season have been so low for the last month or two. While it’s still unlikely, if we do sneak into the playoffs, this will be one of the more memorable and beautiful Septembers in Cardinal history.
There will be plenty of time to feel conflicted about our late-season charge (and the season in general) when it’s all over, if that’s your thing.

Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?
