You only did it so that you could wear terry underwear and feel the city air run past your body

There have been alot of horrible at bats in this game. Alot of guessing, swinging at shit way out of the zone and like usual, poor fundamentals. We still cannot hit a fucking sac fly.

One of my pet peeves, when the pitcher gets ahead in the count and gives up hits!

Lefty
If we have two left handed hitters coming up, why aren’t we starting the inning with the one lefty we have on the roster? When else are we going to use Zep except to start this inning?

Yes
Especially two in the same inning of an extra inning ballgame when you have a rested lefty. When else do we use him?

i've been hanging in there with tony kinda until now
i just cannot defend this stupid garbage anymore. we make a controversial trade for a young lefty specialist and don’t use him in the most critical part of the game…. astronomically stupid

dotel has been good so far against right handers (mcgehee notwithstanding)
but why on earth was he pitching to two lefties in the inning?

we did't trade for a lefty specialist
we traded for a good left-handed pitcher. Therefore, he can’t be used in left-handed specialist situations.
I know, it’s tough to understand.

Holliday/Berk/Freese vs. Axford
Axford’s been basically unhittable.

My Dad always says this,
“larussa costs us at least 5-10 games every year”….i really think he is right.
by mick311 on Aug 10, 2011 12:03 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
And he wins us 6-11 games every year.
Managers make very little difference, and TLR is certainly not in the bottom half of managers.
Is Jon Jay the new Willie McGee?
Just wondering
I’m genuinely curious as to how Tony himself could win us a game, let alone 6-11 every year?

Yes, but he constantly makes poor decisions...
Sometimes they are lucky, but mostly they are poor decisions.
Batting a guy with a career OBP under .300 second. That is a stupid move. Yes, tonight it worked. But it’s still a stupid move.
Using a rightie that isn’t very good (Dotel) versus lefties that are very good hitters, when you have a LOOGY that you just traded for is dumb. That’s why the guy is on the team. Use him. It’s the biggest series of the season, and you leave the guy in the bullpen?
He can win it just as much as lose it by making the correct decisions that are not necessarily the easy ones.
Is Jon Jay the new Willie McGee?
To me though, and I think a good bit of other people
it seems that so often, Tony doesn’t make the right decisions though, whether you’re talking about poor lineup choices, oftentimes extremely poor bullpen/pitcher management in general- these are two pretty big issues that are readily apparent, to me anyway. And while his flaws and mistakes are glaring and easy to spot, it’s hard for me to see what moves or decisions Tony makes that are the key component to a Cardinal win.

A few things:
-I don’t think this is Tony’s best year.
-Looking back, it’s EASY to see decisions that didn’t work out, but it’s hard to see what did, due to the nature of the game.
-Historically, TLR has been one of the best in the business at using his pen, according to a long-term study.
-TLR’s micro-management style makes it appear he fails more than others, but that’s because he tries more than others. I think the counting-stat “TLR fail” is high, but the rate-stat “TLR fail” is not, if you follow.
Is Jon Jay the new Willie McGee?

my great wish os to p[lay poker against tlr
i would be a rich man
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going
...to DFA TLR
I think tonight is a perfect example of his negative effect,
Do you think it is jusy bad luck that we have been so awful the past couple seasons in these extra inning games? I would think these types of games are where managers have the biggest impact on the outcome of the game. I could be wrong, but it seems like TLR always manages to screw us over in games like this.
by mick311 on Aug 10, 2011 12:18 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
In a close game TLR is going to pull every lever and twist all the dials looking for an edge
There is no way to know the success rate cause there is no control group.
Who is TLR's next victim?
We were 6-8 last year and 5-6 the year before that. Pretty close to .500, and in that small of a sample size, there's no point in trying to build meaning out of it.
Is Jon Jay the new Willie McGee?
except that good teams are usually well above .500
and good teams with a HOF manager should be even better than that.

well the Brewers have been playing poorly on the road until recently.
They have won 10 out of their last 11 games. The Cardinals have had one 4 game winning streak. Unless something changes we can’t keep up.
Who is TLR's next victim?
ok, I didn't look it up. It was just off the top of my head.
Actually I’m surprised. I don’t remember winning 4 games in a row before the Marlins. But I still question whether we can keep up with the Brewers.
