Yes, but he constantly makes poor decisions...

Sometimes they are lucky, but mostly they are poor decisions.

Batting a guy with a career OBP under .300 second. That is a stupid move. Yes, tonight it worked. But it’s still a stupid move.

Using a rightie that isn’t very good (Dotel) versus lefties that are very good hitters, when you have a LOOGY that you just traded for is dumb. That’s why the guy is on the team. Use him. It’s the biggest series of the season, and you leave the guy in the bullpen?

by DiscoJer on Aug 10, 2011 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

To me though, and I think a good bit of other people

it seems that so often, Tony doesn’t make the right decisions though, whether you’re talking about poor lineup choices, oftentimes extremely poor bullpen/pitcher management in general- these are two pretty big issues that are readily apparent, to me anyway. And while his flaws and mistakes are glaring and easy to spot, it’s hard for me to see what moves or decisions Tony makes that are the key component to a Cardinal win.

A few things:

-I don’t think this is Tony’s best year.
-Looking back, it’s EASY to see decisions that didn’t work out, but it’s hard to see what did, due to the nature of the game.
-Historically, TLR has been one of the best in the business at using his pen, according to a long-term study.
-TLR’s micro-management style makes it appear he fails more than others, but that’s because he tries more than others. I think the counting-stat “TLR fail” is high, but the rate-stat “TLR fail” is not, if you follow.

I think tonight is a perfect example of his negative effect,

Do you think it is jusy bad luck that we have been so awful the past couple seasons in these extra inning games? I would think these types of games are where managers have the biggest impact on the outcome of the game. I could be wrong, but it seems like TLR always manages to screw us over in games like this.

In a close game TLR is going to pull every lever and twist all the dials looking for an edge

There is no way to know the success rate cause there is no control group.

Who is TLR's next victim?

except that good teams are usually well above .500

and good teams with a HOF manager should be even better than that.

well the Brewers have been playing poorly on the road until recently.

They have won 10 out of their last 11 games. The Cardinals have had one 4 game winning streak. Unless something changes we can’t keep up.

ok, I didn't look it up. It was just off the top of my head.

Actually I’m surprised. I don’t remember winning 4 games in a row before the Marlins. But I still question whether we can keep up with the Brewers.
