Ryan Theriot vs. the second basemen

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - AUGUST 07: Ryan Theriot #3 of the St. Louis Cardinals makes a catch during a game against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium on August 7, 2011 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

[Note: this post is not to be confused with the 1950s Cajunsploitation horror film Ryan Theriot Vs. The Second Baseman.Since the Cardinals traded for Rafael Furcal before July 31's game against the Cubs erstwhile shortstop Ryan Theriot has not appeared at shortstop a single time. Since two days before that he hasn't appeared at shortstop a single time.

One of the things this says: The moment Daniel Descalso, converted two times over from third base, became a more viable option at shortstop than Ryan Theriot is the moment at which it became permanently clear that the Cardinals are at least as disappointed in Theriot's performance to date as Cardinals fans are, if not Viva El Birdos Cardinals fans; if they weren't I'm not sure the Rafael Furcal thing would have moved from rumor to trade so quickly.

I'm not giving the Cardinals credit for this so much as acknowledging that they were able to see that Theriot, who was supposed to just be a mediocre shortstop, has spent all year doing a fine imitation of a terrible shortstop. (And doing it in the most conspicuous way possible, with a fielding percentage—.958—so bad it's worth mentioning.) Even though his offense has—thanks almost entirely to league and park factors, which makes it less visibly impressive and somehow more suspicious—bounced back from its 2010 nadir, no player is valuable when he's been a full season's worth of defensively inept in two-thirds of a season's worth of innings.

So now, for what it's worth, Ryan Theriot is lumped in with the second basemen. His final value at the position is dependent on whether or not he's as historically bad there as he was at shortstop—more importantly, I think, whether his historical badness is the new Ryan Theriot or an off-year—but in the meantime we're left with a player who's hitting more or less at his career averages, which are underwhelming but usable on the bench. Maybe.

Star-divide

Possible uses for Ryan Theriot the Second Baseman

1. Lefty-competenting platoon option. Lefty-mashing seemed somehow inappropriate for a player with 17 career home runs, but Ryan Theriot has a .373 OBP against left-handers in not nearly enough plate appearances (808) to assume he'll keep doing it.

Take the splits to date out of the picture and this still seems like a palatable role; Theriot's a decent hitter for a middle infielder, and the Cardinals' primary second baseman is a left-hander as lead-gloved as Theriot. As long as everyone else is hurt or, in Daniel Descalso's case, also left-handed, I'm okay with a basically straight platoon.

Unfortunately for Theriot, not everyone will be hurt forever, only Nick Punto. Allen Craig would in most situations be a Hail Mary option at second base, but Theriot's in the awkward position of not having any defensive value to speak of, even against prospects who couldn't stick at third base.

2. Tyler Greene motivational tool. In 41 games for Memphis Tyler Greene is hitting .344/.428/.619. He, too, believes he should not be in Memphis behind Ryan Theriot. I, too, believe he should not be in Memphis behind Ryan Theriot.

3. Ballast. With the Cardinals apparently unwilling to just keep Tyler Greene around until they have a better option, the Cardinals have no better option for filling this roster spot than Ryan Theriot. They're already carrying three catchers, and behind Theriot in Memphis lurk Pete Kozma (.558 OPS), Donovan Solano (.733), Freddie Bynum (.685), players who threaten the very idea of the replacement level with their inadequacy. Even after Craig comes back I'd rather have Theriot than Tony Cruz (or, in a perfect world, Gerald Laird.)

The problem with Ryan Theriot as a utility infielder is that, in 2011, you don't want him anywhere near the infield. His skill-set, at the moment, is that he can hit a little and he was as recently as last year not the worst defensive infielder on planet earth. That's what the last infielder on the bench looks like—and it looks like that's exactly what Theriot has belatedly become.

what's his status?

Is he still down at Memphis, and if so, when is he projected to be up? Unless Fangraphs is combining his MiL numbers with numbers from a stint earlier in the year I don’t recall, he looks as though he’s doing decent enough.

For a few 100-something PA stints, yes.

Ryan Theriot has has 400 PAs this year to prove that he sucks.

On a serious note, does anybody know how to find the history of a player going up and down between levels year to year? I’m curious to see how much time in the majors Tyler Greene has gotten continuously. Has he basically been up for any long period of time, or has he ridden the shuttle over and over again?

by mattybobo on Aug 9, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Cool

This isn’t perfect, but it looks to have most of the info. I don’t think he’s ever been up for more than two to two and a half months at a time. And he’s never been a full time player during those call-ups. So I still say it’s a bit much to say he’s crashed and burned at every opportunity, because his opportunities have been relatively few and never for an extended period.
He’s had 357 PAs in the majors his entire career. Some players have slumps that last longer than that.

Ceterum censeo La Russa ire necesse est.

by mattybobo on Aug 9, 2011 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, strictly speaking I see your point

Tyler Greene has never had a length of time in the majors where he was anything to write home about. But that’s just not saying much.

Ceterum censeo La Russa ire necesse est.

by mattybobo on Aug 9, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That's all my point was, really.

It wasn’t meant to be taken as “never give the kid another chance because he’s done.” However, when a defense first shortstop like Greene has trouble defensively and is hitting worse than Theriot (as he was when he was up this year), it’s definitely time to give him more playing time in the minors, like the club did.

by stlfan on Aug 9, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't have much of a problem with Greene not being up right now

I mean, we did go and get Furcal too. It’s just so frustrating to watch him hit like Albert Pujols in AAA (for a pretty small sample size, I know).

It’s also frustrating that they devoted over half a season to Theriot.

Baseball is very frustrating.

Ryan Theriot over his last 1043 PAs has put up a

.288 wOBA and cost the defense 12.7 runs.

yet people are so quick to write off Tyler Greene and his 300 PAs where he’s put a .282 wOBA with a .278 BABIP.

Tyler Greene's offense, just in his ML stints, is comparable to Ryan Theriot's offense.

Even if you think Tyler Greene is a “crash and burn” player in the Majors, the same applies to Ryan Theriot, so there is no benefit of playing Theriot, and that’s not even accounting for the fact that Tyler Greene has potneital upside that Theriot does not.

I dunno

I question whether someone who already throws a sinker is a good reclamation project or even a good signing at all for the Cardinals.

It seems like Duncan’s biggest impact is getting pitchers who have other good pitches, but somehow haven’t put it all together, and adding the 2-seam sinker.
It’s of course a small sample size, but Westbrook is a good example of this. We haven’t seen some marked improvement by him this year. In fact, he’s pitching worse than his career averages in every stat I looked at except the sabermetrically-despised Win %.

Meanwhile, many of the guys that have really turned it around in St. Louis under Duncan were guys who relied on a hard 4-seamer and were able to utilize the 2-seamer to complement the pitches they already had developed in years of pitching prior to being with the Cardinals.

At least that’s been my observation. Perhaps I’m wrong though, but I’d rather see them avoid Wang, other than for making the possible “penis slang term” team. Of course, if it’s just supposed to be dirty sounding words, then Pujols fits pretty well, too.

I would gladly take Allen Craig at 2B, have him bat 2nd or 6th (maybe 5th against lefties?). It’s not a matter of big bat versus slick-fielding alternatives.

Skip Schumaker and Ryan Theriot defense.

All right. I know this is anathema.

The crazy thing about Theriot, is his range is awful. You see balls that look like outs off of the bat, and Theriot does not even enter the picture. But Theriot compounds it by having AWFUL hands to pick up short hops from catchers or tough foul balls; and a terrible arm with a slow release. Honestly, Eckstein was always right around league average because even though his range and arm were bad, his hands were superb. Theriot combines Eckstein’s physical tools with Soriano’s feel at 2b. I don’t know if we can consider him a middle infielder. He is that bad, that I’m just as comfortable with Craig there.

Skip, on the other hand, has been – gulp – much better at 2b this year. While his range on ground balls still sucks, his hands have improved tremendously, and he still has that great arm. Charging balls and getting rid of the ball have progressed to the point where Schumaker used to be a LF playing 2B. He is now a below average 2B. Which, actually makes him sort of valuable on this roster.

My decision: Release Theriot. Platoon Greene and Skip.

Lance has been a godsend, no doubt about it. But his defense is a -6.3 so far this year and he’s not exactly getting any younger. In my opinion it is a misallocation of resources, when Craig is in the minors, to keep two highly paid 1B on the team, and put one in the outfield.

If for no other reason, you have to keep some of them around for depth. And since Skip/Theriot aren’t going to AAA, Greene stays there.

How are we "screwed"?

Fine, don’t cut them, fucking DFA their asses and see if anyone wants them. If not, they can go play in AAA for all I care.

Are there teams just knocking down the door for their services? I don’t think so.

There’s plenty of FAT that we could acquire that are better than Ryan Theriot. Hell, Ryan Jackson probably has more value to our team as a utility player than Theriot, and I’m certainly not on the Ryan Jackson bandwagon by any stretch.

I just don't see it.

Skip has bad instincts and jumps at 2B. His ball transitions are very slow and his footwork is poor. He has a strong arm but a slow release and a long windup. He forgets to cover 1B on some balls to the right side and is often in the wrong positions on relays from the outfield (could be the fault of the 1B or catcher though). His tags are slow.

Watching someone like Punto or Clint Barmes in comparison to Skip when it comes to transitions, tags, footwork, release, etc. is just painful.

There are many plays he doesn’t make that don’t show up in the box scores.

Good for Skip that he made a difficult transition from OF to 2B. But IMO, his role should be 5th OF, emergency 2B, and pinch hitter.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Aug 9, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Watch the difference between Furcal and Theriot at SS

and that’s the difference between Skip and, say, Chase Utley at the keystone.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Aug 9, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree on the footwork and tags.

Not on the transitions, release, or windup, though. His ball-handling at this point is at least average. Worse than Punto, yes (who is excellent in those areas). My main point is that he is a better 2b than Theriot, who has all the flaws Schumaker does without the arm or ability to handle a hard hit ball. Now, I don’t ask Tony for drastic departures. I just want an exchange of Craig for Theriot, and I’ll be pleased. (Or Theriot for Greene.)

by EddieHarsch on Aug 9, 2011 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

4. Performance art. In lieu of reprising his role as Grim Reaper Rabbit, Tony La Russa has instead decided to place Theriot in an extended performance art piece he’s calling Flopsy Mopsy: Keystone Coney. “This is about a man’s, er bunny’s, dark decent into into inadequacy, shame, and ultimately, madness.” said the manager-cum-artiste who then threw his head back and laughed. And laughed. And. Laughed.

its actually south beach

not atkins. so its really just about limiting the carbs. it is working. i think. i mean i lost 8 pounds in the first two weeks. but the kicker, i think, is the no-alcohol rules. i could probably lose weight if i just quit drinking. but i’d rather give up cereal.

no alcohol for the first two weeks

which i managed to do….well, for 12 days.

then you can slowly bring back in wine and beer (i’m also bringing vodka) and other whole-wheat carbs and fruits. i’ve gotten pretty used to not eating bread. i occasionally eat an apple or blueberries, but not much fruit otherwise. but the booze, man…the booze is hard to give up.

I had something similar recently

I woke up with all of my fingers and toes stiff and numb and sore, as if I’d managed to sleep on all of them at once. Hands and feet were all fucked up too. I’m a compulsive joint popper and I couldn’t pop anything, it was painful as hell to try. A couple days into this and my right knee gets all stupid too, so I could hardly walk, I had difficulty with stairs, on top of already having trouble opening doors, jars….it felt like a preview of what it’s like to be in your 80s.

So I went to the doctor convinced I had arthritis. The took an x-ray of my hand and they definitely saw inflammation, but no arthritis. They gave me a painkiller (which didn’t really do much) and an anti-inflammatory (which may or may not have done anything at all). The whole thing eventually subsided after about five days or so, but I was really freaked out for a while. Extra exercise helped; I was terrified at the next band practice, but after a song or two I was fine. I actually felt better afterwards.

Informal Poll Question

So over the past few weeks, I’ve stumbled upon a lot of different studies that illustrate how dumb people are in various subjects, even when they claim to be knowledgeable in those subjects. That got me thinking—I wonder if there are studies that examine the average baseball fan’s knowledge.

Say that a substantially large group of self-described baseball fans were asked the following question: Which is a better batting line: .300/.330/.450 or .240/.380/.450?

My question for all of you: what percentage of respondents do you guess would answer with the .300 BA answer? I’m seriously curious what all of you think.

If I take

the difference in walks, which is 11 and multiply it times .7 and I come up with 7.72. So, the liner weight of those walks from hitter B as compared to hitter A is 8. Hitter B’s extra walks account for Hitter A needing 8 more singles to close the gap even though his OBP would still be a tick lower than that of hitter B.

I’m sure that math is horrible wrong in some sense and somebody will gladly point that out.

Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.

by Eckstreem on Aug 9, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So a walk is worth 70%

of a single, right?

Would that not narrow the gap between these two hypothetical hitters quite a bit?

Out of 100 plate appearances, Hitter A would reach base 33 times, 30 of them via a hit. Hitter B would reach base 38 times with only 24 of them being from a base hit.

Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.

but the thing that ends up making the difference is the ISO power for Hitter A compared to Hitter B. More of Hitter A’s hits will be more extra bases.

right, Hitter B

ugh, sorry.

If you figure they each get 1000 PA.

Hitter A has 30 walks and 970 ABs (excluding sac, etc.). 970 × 0.45 = 437 total bases. Add walks and you get 467 total bases + walks.

Hitter B has 140 walks, and 860 ABs (excluding sac, etc.). 860 × 0.45 = 387 total bases. Add walks and you get 527 total bases + walks.

Not sure what total bases + walks represents but it should mean something.

If we're talking a random sample of people,

I’d guess that at least 60% are going to choose the .300 hitter, and that’s the bare minimum number I’d guess. It could be considerably higher than that.

I would have said that 5 years ago.

But ESPN is now showing OPS and emphasizing the rate stats more on their broadcasts, although they continue to allow Bobby Vee to make stupid comments on television. ESPN finally figured out that they could probably drive traffic to their website by pushing statistical analysis.

Yeah

If the average baseball fan is my grandmother then almost 100% will say the .300 average hitter.

If the average fan is my dad then about 60-70% probably.

There isn’t a third alternative because people like us aren’t the average fan.

are you in a condo or a house?

are your bamboo floors going to be upstairs and downstairs? i have a lot of experience with hardwood type floors (i know, they are technically a grass.) i have developed hundreds of condos and this is always an issue. the underlayment that goes under the floors does help some because it helps insulate the tapping sound from the structure but the IIC (tapping sound) is pretty hard to stop regardless of what you do on a wood subfloor. another area where you can help yourself is to limit the holes cut in the drywall below the floor. once you start putting can lighting, speakers, etc. in the ceiling below the hardwood floor, you are basically making swiss cheese.

if you are in a single family home, then it is usually not an issue because you are controlling the use of the environment. you just live with it. in multifamily structures, that is not an option because you have no ability to control what the person below you is doing unless the condo docs dictate what you can and can’t do.

Finally!

I’m in a house. The flooring we are replacing is on the main floor and mostly over the garage and storage room in the basement, which are both completely unfinished, so it won’t be a big problem if it is noisy below the floor. Do you have any experience with a cork underlay? I was look at some with an r value of .8, I think. I’m a little concerned that the floors over the garage will be cold in the winter (1st world problem).

What is your experience with glueing vs nailing vs products like Elastilon?

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum

by scoot on Aug 9, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I do not have any experience using a cork underlay. Typically, we have used the underlayment in most of our flooring because we develop multifamily and have sound attenuation issues. We also only allow hard surfaces in the main living area to help keep the quality of life for the other owners high. It is something every potential home buyer worries about so we do our best to mitigate it but it is impossible to eliminate it.

If you are worried about insulation, then I would definitely include the underlayment. They typically work pretty well. When using these underlayments, the flooring manufacturers often require you to “float” the floor on top of the underlayment. We have had many issues with this because when the floors add humidity, they swell and the floors can tend to bulge and buckle. The problem tends to go away when when the weather cools and the humidity calms but it is an issue. You better check with the manufacturer about your warranty if you nail or glue the surface down. I know a lot of the prefinished floors lose their warranty if you don’t float it. We have brought in a number of the manufacturers and ultimately we ended up attaching the project to the subsurface and had the manufacturer keep the warranty in place – their system just wasn’t working without nailing or glueing. I have typically nailed when I have used a wood substructure. A lot of our buildings are in concrete buildings so we end up glueing in those applications because it is our only choice.

As for your garage, is it tucked under your house? I have this scenario on my home. The sides of the garage are pretty insulated at my house because the terrain of the surrounding earth rises up and covers the sides (ie, I sit on a hill) and the earth provides pretty decent insulation. I have not had too many problems. Other options are to insulate the ceiling in your garage. Is your garage/storage ceiling drywalled and insulated?

I've used a cork underlay

and it works quite well, especially for sound dampening. For that, it’s probably the best stuff out there for the cost. Considering that it is also naturally water repellent it’s also good for some of the other issues that you raise here.

I had an uncle use cork underlay for a bamboo floor and he’s had no problems with it since he installed it 5 years ago.

I liked the cork so much, we put a cork floating floor in our kitchen last fall and have been really happy with it.

It depends on where you're planning on putting the bamboo.

It’s a fairly soft wood (if you want to call it that). We have a bamboo floor in our kitchen. It’s very easy to clean, usually just water and a mild detergent (we use a little bit of Simple Green), and we have yet to need a refinishing after 10 years of use. However, if you drop something heavy, and an edge or tip hits the floor, it’s gonna leave a dent. We have a few of those (I’m a bit of a klutz….okay, I’m a huge klutz, I pretty much drop something every day), but they don’t look too bad. Our bamboo is a very light color, though, and I don’t know if a dent would show up worse or better in a darker color.

I don't believe in individual match up statistics (SSS)

but from a scouting stand point, Marcum has a slider and a cutter. That is not a good matchup.

I wonder if my worst fear is coming true

That Patterson’s hustle-y-ness and veteraness made TLR think that he was actually a decent player, and therefore Patterson would play a lot. I mean, wasn’t part of the reason for trading Rasmus so Jon Jay could be “the guy” in CF? Am I missing something?

Yuck.

Why would any manager with two fucking brain cells bat Corey Patterson, who has proven himself to be an awful hitter, No. 2 in the lineup, when it has also been proven that you should bat one of the team’s best hitters, if not the best hitter, in that lineup spot -

It’s just stupid.

How can you say this about Reifer?

He’s been on the DL almost the whole season. He’ll have to prove himself all over again, and I’m sure it will take most of next year to do that.

I think he’ll fit in nicely with the other guys like that, but you’re right when you say he needs to prove himself again.

Craig may be activated tomorrow. From Matthew Leach

6 pm update: Craig came through his workout with no issues, and TLR made it sound extremely likely that he will in fact be activated tomorrow.

Someday when I'm old and have grandchildren, I'll sit them down and say, "I got to see Ryan Theriot play SS." And they'll reply, "Oh, I'm so sorry you had to experience that."
