So the chances of...
Pujols reaching .299 are equivalent to the Cards getting into the playoffs…what do I root for? I root to not be down 6 runs by the 4th.
This is going to hell quickly.

steven jackson looks fat
but I think it’s due to his dreads being tucked in under his shoulder pads.
Grit != flat out sucking.
I think he was getting squeezed a bit on the outside edge,
but yeah. He was missing his spots and had a lot of pitches just out over the middle of the plate.

Well, in order to maintain your stranglehold of power in that crazy region of the world, you have to be kind of crazy tough.
I mean, the wars of succession where she ended up defeating Wanda Princess of Tiles and taking absolute control over the kingdom got pretty ugly. I almost have to admire her Machiavellian fortitude.

I’ve heard rumors that Becky had her thrown in a oubliette somewhere beneath Laclede’s Landing. I’ve also heard she fled the kingdom and was offered sanctuary by King Chrysler.

Thankfully though
Skip is leading off. 3 runs is certainly possible.
I really think Furcal leading off is what killed the Cardinals offense after the trade…
(And I say that as he makes an out…)
I yearn for a day
When Skip doesn’t get more PT than every player sans Albert.

Only reason Freese is behind skip is Freese's DL time
Pujols (who was on the DL)
Berkman (was on the DL),
Holliday (was on the DL),
Theriot(lost his job…and one of the guys who I would rather have bat instead of skip)
Yadi (catcher who doesn’t get enough time off),
Jon Jay (4th out fielder most of the year),
Rasmus(traded three weeks ago)
Descalso(really?)
All have more PAs than SKip this year.So good news for Power Slurve. Those days he yarns for are this year.
Grit != flat out sucking.
We could just put Skipper in the BP
He’d bat for himself though, but at least his ABs would be limited.
Skip missed 34 games this year
And guess what, his shit defense plays into it, too.

everyone's missed games this year
like Punto, who was platooning with skip before he got hurt. Like craig, who was platooning with skip before he got hurt.
Players shouldn’t platoon with skip. It’s dangerous
Grit != flat out sucking.

Last two games, for example
Craig starts in center instead of Jay.
Jay is clearly a better hitter than Skip, and Craig is a vastly superior hitter to Skip. Craig can and has played second, yet who starts and who sits?

Of giving it to certain players that illicit McGees essence. If we did it that way it’s like honering the “grit” we keep dragging along. And no I’m not saying McGee was grit, I’m saying I’m afraid his number would be applied this way.

14-3, halftime now
Random notes coming from the top of my head:
Bradford was looking good in the first quarter, but second quarter’s been pretty ugly. Lance Kendricks had one of the two TD’s thrown by Bradford. Cadillac Williams seems to have been an amazing FA pickup. Danario Alexander’s job security not looking great. Defense looking pretty solid.

I enjoyed listening to Dan talk with Willie and Vince.
One of the few times I have not been annoyed when announcers ignore the game. It was good to hear them laugh and carry on. Part of the Cardinal heritage.
It made me re-think the hate I have for LaRussa. He is still infuriating. All the complaints about his poor decision making are spot on. I think his schtick has gotten old and is no longer effective. But chances are he is still going to be the Cardinal manager next year. And at this point he is a significant part of Cardinal history. So that makes him a member of the family in a way. I will put up with him as graciously as I can for one more year. Because above all, I am and always will be a Cardinal fan.
And then again, maybe I am just melancholy with all this losing. Long season

“See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum… and one night, one night they decide they don’t like living in an asylum any more. They decide they’re going to escape! So, like, they get up onto the roof, and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in the moon light… stretching away to freedom. Now, the first guy, he jumps right across with no problem. But his friend, his friend didn’t dare make the leap. Y’see… Y’see, he’s afraid of falling. So then, the first guy has an idea… He says “Hey! I have my flashlight with me! I’ll shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk along the beam and join me!” B-but the second guy just shakes his head. He suh-says… He says “Wh-what do you think I am? Crazy? You’d turn it off when I was half way across!”

Or is it just me?

meh. I'd leave town and go camping in western PA
Or the Adirondacks, or go see montreal or quebec city, if I were in the path.
Not because I’d be terrorized by irene, but who wants to spend the weekend watching 15 inches of rain fall and garbage cans getting blown down the street?
It’s a summer weekend. Use it as an excuse to go do something fun.

Ok VEB, don't hate the messenger here
Bear with me, long post coming: Pre-emptives- yes, it’s about the Cardinals and yes everything is going great with the baby.
So as many of you know, mrs. scoot is pregnant. And as some of you know, mrs. scoot was a volleyball coach at this time last year. When she found out she was pregnant she requested to switch from volleyball to softball coach (more her speed and the season is in the spring, after the pregnancy). This wish was granted about two weeks before school started. The volleyball season opened tonight and after the festivities, we went out to dinner with the new coach and her family.
I knew that the new coach was dating a supposed minor league player so I asked for details. She told me she is dating Jeremy Patton of our own Batavia Muckdogs. Some of you may realize, Batavia is also where one Jordan Rasmus is stationed.
Aside: I could’ve swore it was Casey Rasmus, but that is neither here no there.
I didn’t remember that the younger Rasmus was in Batavia until I reached for my phone to check the score of the Cardinals game. One of our dinner mates pointed out that he had given up on the Cardinals recently and Mrs. Scoot announced that we had given up at the Rasmus trade. This is where things got interesting. The other guy stated that he was happy to see Rasmus go because he was uncoachable. I figured this was a pretty common thinking process among “regular” fans, so I just ignored it. That is when the new coach reminded me that the younger Rasmus was in Batavia. She said that she had met the entire Rasmus family and that they were “the most arrogant people she had ever met.”
At this point I’m thinking, ok, that’s interesting, but I’d probably be a little arrogant if I were colby too. Then she confirmed the “uncoachable” statements, saying that the younger Rasmus had shared to her boyfriend that Colby had said the major league staff “didn’t know how to coach.”
I share this only as information. I’m firmly in the camp that Colby shouldn’t have been traded, attitude problem or not. But this does make me think about it a little more. It doesn’t change the fact that the package we got in return was light for the value that we gave up. Also, I know this is hearsay information, but it is interesting enough to me to feel like it should be shared. Also it is crazy to think about the string of events that had to happen for this conversation to happen.

Well, OK, let's say that all the stuff that was passed along
was actually said and not garbled along the way.
Honestly, none of it would surprise me at all. A lot of high-level athletes seem to be pricks. I don’t think Colby is really unique in this regard.
Their sense of entitlement sucks, but I don’t know what you can do about it.
Also, I hope that the new coach doesn’t read VEB.

nah, no way she's a VEBer
and if she did, I didn’t say anything bad about her. It was her cousin that was saying the stuff I was ignoring. Including saying “Brendan Ryan isn’t an everyday player but Theriot is”. That guy is dead to me. I seriously might print off Goold’s article from a couple days ago and go hand it to him.
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
the unfortunate thing is that Theriot was an everyday player for most of the year
Grit != flat out sucking.
ok
new coach met Raz family. They are all arrogant. Fourth hand information saying that Colby says the major league staff doesn’t know how to coach baseball.

Anyway, I’m of the opinion that Colby should have been traded, but more than Scrabble should have been obtained. I think he can be a decent 4th or 5th starter perhaps, but it was definitely a case of selling low.
Then again, that’s basically what he got for Brendan Ryan, and that’s only cost us 4 wins going from him to Theriot. Whereas from Colby to Jay/Craig is probably only 1 or so (at least this year).
well, tony rasmus has certainly provided ample evidence that he might have personality issues.
Colby has always seemed shy and not arrogant so I always gave him the benefit of the doubt. He certainly handles it well, when I have seen fans clamoring for autographs. I realize that is not much evidence. :)
And it would not surprise me that a TLR led staff would not be strong in coaching. They have expectations about what a player should already know. They are not there to babysit.
So thanks for passing this along. Interesting information. I"m still sorry that things worked out the way they did. I sure hope Shelby has his head screwed on a little straighter. The Cardinals are enough like a soap opera as it is. No new chapters are needed.
A slick way to outfigure a person is to get him figuring you figure he's figuring you're figuring he'll figure you aren't really figuring what you want him to figure you figure.

yeah that's a lot of odd things to say about someone but none of it is really a dealbreaker (if they're even true)
i mean, sometimes shyness is misinterpreted as arrogance.
it totally doesn’t surprise me that colby may have said nobody can coach, but does anyone believe he’s the only minor leaguer ever to say something like that to a friend/family member? I bet that’s fairly common when someone isn’t getting what they want. i mean honestly, who here hasn’t complained about a boss, does that mean that we’re all unhireable?
