by a fink on Aug 22, 2011 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know, and I don't want to find out anytime soon

But in all seriousness, if we were consistently .470 and our expectations of such a team were met, I’m sure it wouldn’t be as quiet around here. The fact that we went from 2 games back to 9 games at such a quick pace probably pissed people off a bit.

They’re playing great ball and deserve the playoff spot.

I hope we move from bitterness to acceptance and a rekindling of a love for Cardinals baseball soon.

I’m not remotely burnt out of the Cardinals, but VEB has not been a fun place of late.

Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?

by a fink on Aug 22, 2011 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure if it's just that we're not winning, or that we're playing mediocre baseball and also not winning

If we were playing well and the Brewers just played that much better, that’d be one thing. But the Brewers have sustained an insane stretch of play while we’ve flailed about and looked like a middling team rather than a contender. It’s the worst of both worlds.

that's not an ok club

this has been a seriously frustrating season

by mattyfrommo on Aug 22, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

We've had some stretches where we looked good and other where we didn't.

We’re ok. You know as well as I that 2 and a half months of being 6 below .500 doesn’t mean you’re a horrible team. Also, you’re choosing our high watermark and then just looking after that. Yeah, we’re not great. We see all this potential because we have some great hitters, but Carp and Jaime are not top-tier 1-2 guys right now and we have question marks behind that.
I don’t know. It’s a pointless argument.

Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?

by a fink on Aug 22, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I just think a team that is capable of putting together a winning streak longer than 4 games isn't all that good

and I’m gonna blame the manager on this one, because I think we have the talent to be a very good team. It’s just the story of this season, a shit-ton of smack your head- YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME- moments.

by mattyfrommo on Aug 22, 2011 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

wow

incapable. Looks like I’m having an off year, as well.

by mattyfrommo on Aug 22, 2011 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think winning streaks are relevant.

Going 4-1 and then 4-1 is just as good as 6-0 then 2-2.
But I certainly agree that TLR has not been very good this year.

Is Jon Jay the next Willie McGee? Is Arthur Rhodes the next Arthur Rhodes?

by a fink on Aug 22, 2011 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, winning streaks probably aren't all that revelent

consistency would be nice.
I suppose even with the loss of Wainwright, I expected more out of this team than it has shown, especially with this possibly being Albert’s last year.
All in all, I just expected better decisions to be made, about this season, and the future.

by mattyfrommo on Aug 22, 2011 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I certainly agree with the latter.

I’m not at all happy with the Rasmus trade.

however, i think losing someones favorite player has made this performance less bearable.

I still like it.

I get that it’s been a somewhat frustrating season, but if you asked me on day 1 what was the probability we’d make the playoffs if the Brewers played to their ability and Waino wouldn’t throw a pitch for us, I’d say 10%, so it’s hard for me to be disappointed. I’ve LOVED watching Berk hit for us, and I think this will be a one-season deal. I think there’s a small but real chance this is the end of Albert. I’m still eating it up, despite our obvious flaws.

I really wish the Brewers would have just won this many games at a normal pace

Instead of a crazy-impossible winning streak. Slowly falling behind a better team is less depressing than watching them rocket away from you down the stretch.

by mojowo11 on Aug 22, 2011 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It has less to do with this year for me

I figured this team was built to be frustrating (with the loss of Wainwright and the defensive configuration) and I was pleasantly surprised with their jump out of the gate. What really gets me is that we hurt the 2012 and 2013 Cards, in my estimation, in some futile attempt to patch together several holes this season. It’s tougher to shake that. Obviously, this a dead horse.

I also like the Pilsner, the Pale Ale, and the Hefeweizen and Weissbier (I honestly can’t remember if there is a difference or they just changed the name or what) as well, they are solid.
Some of those are seasonal I think, so obviously you won’t necessarily be able to get them all right now.

Carp

He’s right there with Tudor as my favorite Cardinal pitcher in my lifetime. He’s developed some anger management issues somehow, and I can totally understand why other team’s fans wouldn’t like him, but he’s been ridiculously effective for us for a long time. Also there are the facts only I care about – he is something like 20-1 in games I have attended, with an average game length of about 2:02.

I don’t really think we should take on that option, but I’d hate to see him finish his career elsewhere too.

by Merry CRasmus on Aug 22, 2011 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

I'd love to see him

finish his career in Seattle.

The whole Brendan Ryan deal really soured me on Carp. In my book, you just don’t backstab a teammate like that

by DiscoJer on Aug 22, 2011 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that was overblown

He wanted the guy as his SS every start, right? I think it was used by idiots as support of why Ryan “had to go”, but I don’t believe Carp actually wanted him gone. If he did, why would he want him as his SS?

by Merry CRasmus on Aug 22, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't remember the timing of the mentions

But I recall that when Ryan was deep in his hitting funk, he’d still get starts with Carpenter on the mound. Ryan undoubtedly did things that could set people off, and Carp undoubtedly has a short fuse, but Carp didn’t run him out of town.

by Merry CRasmus on Aug 22, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I really fucking hate LaRussa so much.

by mick311 on Aug 22, 2011 11:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I dunno

It makes sense to me. Your starter has thrown 100 pitches, looks like he’s tired.

You put in a LOOGY and then your closer.

Most managers would do that.

What most managers wouldn’t do (and shouldn’t) is when it doesn’t work out, put in a SS with an injured hand. I mean, the only hope of not allowing a run that inning was either a strike out or a ground ball. Motte got the ground ball, but Furcal couldn’t grip the ball for the throw, because of his injury.

by DiscoJer on Aug 22, 2011 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention

You lose Berkman’s bat when you have to bat. Which they would have had to do anyway.

Unless Berkman has an injury, that’s just dumb.

by DiscoJer on Aug 22, 2011 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Except when Carp is usually at 100 pitches,

Tired, and has given up 12 hits and 4 runs, TLR usually has him throw 20-30 more. You can defend putting in Rhodes I guess bc it worked but I don’t see how taking out Carp when he has a shutout going and putting in a washed up reliever who has gotten absolutely rocked lately into a one run game in the 9th inning.

It just bothers me bc we are already way out of the race, and Carp has been a victim of some really shitty luck and run support this season. TLR has shown faith in him all season and then decides not to when he is 3 outs away from a CG shutout.

by mick311 on Aug 22, 2011 11:13 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

in those 130 pitch games

Carpenter hasn’t really looked tired durring those last two innings. He gave up a hard hit ball that he got lucky on, and then hit a guy with the next pitch.

I always say its better pull a pitcher early than late. However; the bigger issue here was all of the defensive switches that went along with it.

Grit != flat out sucking.

2) What’s the etiquette? I figure I’d roll it up during actual gameplay so as not to impede the views of other people, but showing the sign during between-inning breaks should be permissible, right?

3) What’s the over-under on “number of innings before I get the sign taken away/asked to leave”?

Banner policy, per the Cards’ site…

Banners may be displayed as long as they do not hinder or interfere with a ball in play or distract or interfere with the view of another guest. Banners may not be displayed in fair territory, be obscene or in poor taste, attract abuse or cause a disturbance among other guests. They should be baseball-oriented and not commercial in nature, unless the Cardinals and Stadium management have granted permission. Also, banners may not be paraded around the Stadium or hung over the field boxes on the field level.

The Play

One thing funny about the Miles AB when he hits the triple. If you look at the outfield positioning, Jay is playing him to left center and Schumaker playing him to pull in right. This left a hge area in right center, which is exactly where he hit the ball. It wasn’t hit all that well, but those two outfielders, being slow anyway, had no shot the y way they were positioned.

by deweydell on Aug 22, 2011 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

well yeah

the played him to hit into left or down the right field line. Miles beat the defense. Not sure if Salas was pitching to that defense or if Miles just did that pesky grit thing.

Over his career, Ethier is "Ryan Theriot with less on-base ability" when he's facing lefties.

Rhodes destroyed him in that at-bat.

Well

Since we (and myself) are on the TLR lynching bandwagon, he left on Corey Patterson instead of say, maybe Allen Craig, and then Rafael Furcal, who since he can’t grasp a baseball but was put in for “defensive purposes”, I assume cannot grasp a bat very well.

And yet

Somehow Corey Patterson has basically made a major league career out of AAAA ability

And yet, if Greene were to actually play in the majors, would no doubt at least get on base more often. Okay, he might hit .220, but he’d have an OBP of over .300

Despite what people think

TLR will be back.

Heck, the way the owner feels about him, TLR could pass away tomorrow, have it in his will that he wants to be the Cardinals manager for the next 10 years, and he’d still be the manager.

(And sadly, they’ve likely have a better record with zombie TLR than the living one)
