that's a stupid answer
I mean, yes, it’s incredibly assholish for you to answer with that. Not because you owe me an answer, but because you had no reason to be a dick, but you were.
Anyway, I think there’s a legit question- “why” did he choose that quote? What does it mean to him?
if someone like strauss asked that, and H said “I’d rather not answer, it’s personal”, that would be a fine thing to report. or if H answered that “he chose it because he liked it”, that would be a fine response.
The fact that jackasses like strauss never asked the question, is ridiculous.

I thought he started off fine.
In the 5th inning I said to myself, “Wow, he’s much more consistent than last night’s guy.” And then, Schumaker struck out on a high pitch and the ump just started screwing up every call, calling a completely different strike zone for each team.
6th inning on was davidsonian.

That's the weird thing
His zone was great for the first 6-7 innings. Then the corners got really wonky when the bullpens took over, for some reason.
Marcum kept begging for that too-low strike, but never got it.
Then the ump just decided to call the zone randomly.

probably
horizontal velocity would decrease at roughly the same rate for both due to wind resistance. but a fastball fights change in vertical velocity, and a change up creates a change in vertical velocity. so since the changeup has creates the greater downward velocity, it stays closer to its original overall velocity

We were down a few runs, and there was literally a post that was asking when we were going to blow the team up and start over. There was a post about accepting that the Brewers would be swept by the Phillies, not us. There was all sorts of negative, defeatist bullshit. People need to cheer the hell up and have some hope.

Even if it takes much longer to write? I suppose you have to weigh code checking, but I would think effeciency is also a factor.
That’s a pretty reasonable fucking question, no?
And then you all started questioning how much coding experience I’ve had, which is a bullshit copout response (later on you actually answered my question, by that was well after several comments of “lulz, vep doesn’t have a lot of experience”).

Tony has clearly lost it. And yadi looked like a guy trying to get away with something. But I still don’t think he should be suspended.
What was the deal with:
The Cardinals filed a complaint with the umpiring crew about the thin LED boards that surround Miller Park’s second level, creating different lighting situations in Monday night’s game, but would not discuss the matter further.
was that discussed in the 5000ish posts I didn’t have time to read, today?
The other thing I found interesting about tonight’s game was the fact that they appeared to be opening and closing the roof based on who was batting.

Probably wrong, but I was trying to pay extra attention.

he didn't over-react at all.
that was really the proper reaction to being called out on that pitch.
3 times in the late innings of a game in a pennat race, a cardinal was called out on strikes on a ball out of zone with 2 outs (mostly with RISP). That is absurd.

Dude, it's pretty obvious that Molina did not think things over.
There was no in-between where he analyzed the positives and negatives of his actions. He just lost it. And to be honest, I can see how he lost it. Did he take it over the line? Yeah but he had already lost it at that point.
It wasn't much different from a basketball coach
getting T’d up because he was tired of the ref’s not calling something that is rather blatant. Sometimes it makes the officials actually think about what is being said.

yeah, that's the tough part. Probably nothing.
OTOH, would we have won that game if he hadn’t over-reacted? No way to ever know. Inside the margins wins, things like extra-innings, etc, are completely unpredictable; sabermetrics chalks them up to “luck”.

If it's a one game suspension, he should just serve it tomorrow.
I think he probably wouldn’t play tomorrow anyway after a long night.
theriot got a 2-game suspension for saying "cocksucker"
i think yadi will get not-less for bumping the umpire at least 3 times
It depends on how they interpret the video.
Yadier claims that the umpire kind of leaned in on him, pretty much begging to be bumped. If the league office rules that the ump is at fault here, it may not be a long suspension. I do think he will likely get a multiple game suspension though.
I don't think the proper reaction is ever "do something you know might cost your team its starting catcher for three games in the middle of august."

I suppose so, though I think that's a one-gamer no matter who's umpiring
yadi couldn’t get himself in check, though, even when descalso tried to pull him away. personally I’m of the opinion that adults should never get themselves thrown out of baseball games, so I have no sympathy for him at all; I find the whole thing to be an embarrassment, like when the guy next to you at your table starts screaming at the waitress.

"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
I don't know that that's true
why does anyone ever have to do it? do teams hit better after an ejection? do umpires remember where the strike zone is after getting pissed off at a member of one of the two teams they’re supposed to be impartial about?
dunno, big picture
but 30 seconds of google searching says bobby cox’s teams won over 60% of the time, after he was ejected, vs around 56% of the time, overall, and the brewers this year have had a ridiculous “home team advantage”.
Not sure if there is any reason to correlate the two, but no one has done a study on “when the starting catcher asserts himself in the 11th inning against an umpire who has cost his team around .5ish WPA, against a home team with a .800ish win% at home”.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
I'd settle for a study on "player looks like an ass because someone's bad at his job and anything positive happens at all"
Jason Motte looked like an ass.
i don’t feel that way about Molina. if anything, he was frustrated, and overreacted, and then was surprised by the way the umpire moved. It was very irregular.
Dunno, guess there’s room for disagreement. After watching the replays 10+ times, it’s clear to me that the umpire was looking for a fight.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
and molina, not looking for a fight, was surprised to find himself in one.
but it was too late.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
why does motte look like an ass
it’s an accepted part of baseball, wasn’t motte’s decision and at worst would have cost 1 run
because it was incredibly stupid, put the winning run on first base
and was unnecessary. saito didn’t mean to hit pujols.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
Yadi is, generously, a 4 fWAR player
assuming his replacement is replacement-level, 10 games represents about 1/5th of one win.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
yeah, theoretically, in a vacuum
but we’re not trying to project a mean, here. we’re trying to squeeze every last run out of a pennant race and molina’s actions hurt the team’s playoff chances. bottom line
and we won tonight.
Mark it 9 pythag runs, dude ;)
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
we're in agreement on at least one thing--I don't like what motte did, either
in general I like my baseball to be as little like hockey as possible. all the posturing just looks ridiculous to me.
i ddint see the replay on molina
did the ump get in his face too?
molina doesnt look like an ass…like i said you should vent your frustration instead of letting someone run a game unfairly

by guillermozeliak on Aug 3, 2011 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions
venting doesn't keep the umpire from "running a game unfairly"
it just gets you thrown out of the game. it’s not like molina sacrificed a chess piece to create a better strike zone, he just overreacted and got himself suspended.
obviously
im not watching a game of robots…they dont all play exactly to there projections or grind out games exactly as planned

I'm not very good at guessing suspensions
but I’d guess more than one and considerably less than 10 or whatever was floating around earlier.
I realize they aren’t robots, but having been in his situation before (admittedly on a smaller scale, though it meant no less to me at the time) I’m embarrassed by what molina did here, and I won’t defend it. things happen in the heat of the moment but that, to me, isn’t justification for anything.
im not embarrased
haha why are you embarrased man? i dont think you should be embarrassed you didnt do anything!

you don't ever get embarrassed for other people?
I guess what I’m trying to say is that the way he acted makes me cringe as much as anything they’ve ever done on the british version of “the office.”
actually, it does.
If a player gets thrown out, the crew chief HAS to file a report on the matter. The report has to be reviewed with the league, and an explanation has to be given as to what happened. IE, the boss gets called onto the carpet, so shit usually rolls downhill.
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
i dont think you can analyze it that
way…any adult getetting kicked out? for real? have you played anything competitvely……you dont want to be walked over and you need to let someone know that sometimes
by guillermozeliak on Aug 3, 2011 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions
yes, I have
and at times I’ve acted like an ass. in my experience it’s never once helped me win at anything, but it has made me cringe about my own behavior the next day. luckily I didn’t do it on TV.
if we ask for quantifiable reasons for doing everything else on a baseball diamond I don’t think it’s too much to ask that the cardinals’ players don’t give in to sports’ most asinine stereotypes about competitive fire etc.
doesnt have to be in sports anyways
just in life in general…if you let someone run over you will feel regret in not handling it then with your own feelings
i really dont think yadi gave a shit (not saying that he shouldn’t) he played with everything he got
by guillermozeliak on Aug 3, 2011 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions
mmmmh, if you think that players in general should never do it
then we aren’t going to agree. But if you think some players should, then I would point out that Yadi is perfect: He is a big leader on the team, is very naturally emotional, and he is not prohibitively important to the team for the game.

Milb article on Miller
Miller is 6-2 with a 2.57 ERA and 65 strikeouts in his Double-A debut after opening the season in the Florida State League. He is working on a cut fastball and a two-seam fastball to complement his changeup, curve and a four-seamer that averages 94 mph, and he is clearly not afraid to take the ball and shoulder a load.

I've learned to sense upcoming idiocy in the Cardinals organization, it's my superpower
…because they keep doing the same stupid shit over and over and over and over and over and over.
Not afraid to nitpick
Not sure if a record exists but Yadi might hold the sportscenter record for total words that needed to be pixelated for language. They seriously did it like 6-7x in like a 15 second span. Well done.

I'm probably through digging through that thread
Where did you end up getting your suit?
Still not a werewolf.
I got mine at Banana Republic at an enormous discount, probably $200 total for three pieces
This makes me sound much hipper and well-dressed than I really am.
Still not a werewolf.
then $300 is pretty good.
what color? and why do I suddenly care? What has that thread done to me?
I own ten thousand t-shirts.

And check out the umpire leaning back like he'd just gotten punched in the face.
Molina didn’t spit on him. He was yelling and some stuff flew out. It wasn’t intentional. The ump was being a little bitch. Looked like he was about to cry.
i'm more interested in descalso's longing expression
this is like the 10th inning. he’s probably fantasizing about the post game spread or a bacon cheeseburger
Perfecting his inner Vlade Divac flop circa 2002

well I'm wide awake and you just arrived
so between my excessive comment and your .gifs, it’s probably necessary.

I've been here all night, I was just super pessimistic while the game was going on.
I decided to stop watching our pitchers after the braun HBP.

just finished setting up sb nation st. louis for tomorrow
so I figured I might as well get something with less than 1000 comments on it up on the front page in case the red baron is delayed.
