I get into arguments alot
with my Cubs friends.(ish) Anyway I always say they should knock down wrigley and build it the exact same looking, only with upgraded bathrooms and clubhouse and amenities. The push back I get is you can’t knock it down, the shittiness is part of the charm. Okay then.
I mean the place sucks
It really does. Just get with the historical society and say you will build it the exact same way. Hell even use the old bricks! It’s a shit hole that makes dive bars look like high-end clubs.
Ah, but then you get into a paradox.
From the blackhole of the Iowa TV market.
Over the years people have proposed building
a new stadium closer to Lake Michigan…and keeping Wrigley as a historic landmark/minor league stadium.
It’s never gained traction though.
2011 MLB All Star Game FanFest: July 8-12 at the Phoenix Convention Center!
It needs to
maybe instead of being the highest payroll, they should focus spending that money for a new stadium. 1908 was great and all but it’s time to start looking forward.
discomfort = charm.

can't they just renovate?
2011 Cardinals GIDPs: 133
NL Record: '58 Cardinals, 166

The Cubs have been renovating it...but for some reason
it’s taking a hell of a long time to complete them all.
Heck the proposed Triangle Building they’ve wanted to build for years still is a century away from realistically happening…
2011 MLB All Star Game FanFest: July 8-12 at the Phoenix Convention Center!
Except they have the need for this immediately...
For administrative offices, expanded locker rooms, training rooms, batting cages, etc…plus the Cubs Hall of Fame. It’s not exactly a HUGE project like BPV is:

Nope. Just a big urban development geek.
I went to SLU and mainly follow the St. Louis urban/economic development scenes…but stadium developments are also a favorite of mine. (I worked at an arena in St. Louis)
2011 MLB All Star Game FanFest: July 8-12 at the Phoenix Convention Center!
That's awesome
I can never understand holding onto the past. I can see incorporating it into new designs and paying tribute to it, but not knocking something down because it’s old is dumb. Especially when it’s old and nobody takes care of it like they should.
It depends on the building to me I guess
An old mall from the 1990’s that’s abandoned…tear that baby down! An old historic home build in the 1850’s that has historic value and can be restored for the same price it would take to tear it down…save it! (or move it at least!)
2011 MLB All Star Game FanFest: July 8-12 at the Phoenix Convention Center!
this +1000
there is no reason to destroy something that actually has historical significance and isn’t falling down and just needs some work. But, in the case of Wrigley, they need to just take it apart and redo it. It’s time.

Some of those buildings are cool
but some have asbestos and lead paint. I just don’t understand if you build a brand new building that looks exactly like the old one but has newer ammenities, bigger bathrooms, better run electric wire, etc. what the big fuss is about knocking the old one down.
I guess we're splitting hairs here...
if you tear down an old building to build a newer, nicer, replica…I’m ok with that. Tearing it down to build a strip mall or surface parking lot…barf.
2011 MLB All Star Game FanFest: July 8-12 at the Phoenix Convention Center!
Becauase there is no funding for any of that

So I got to see Jaime's last start on Saturday
(no small trick since we live 1000 miles from St. Louis) and my son remarked that he thinks Jaime is tipping his pitches. He wasn’t sure exactly how, but he thinks it’s happening. Anybody else making that observation, notably anyone who sees him in the flesh more often than we do?

Theriot sucks at fielding as a SS
he is not a bad baseball player and is a decent 2B defensively

What you "lose" offensively between Theriot and Skip
I think you actually make up for in defense at 2B, in the end either one can start and I won’t care one way.
"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."
They both suck. Craig could provide similar defense as Schu
and hit much better than both of them. Combined.

Thats true
but if the choice is Theriot or Skip I could care less who it is. Would prefer Craig everyday and twice on Sunday but that won’t happen.
"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."
Craig couldn't stick at 3rd in the minors
I don’t know what type of defense he could provide at second. But I’m not going to say it automatically is better than skips.
Grit != flat out sucking.
No, me neither.
But he would hurt us a lot less at 2B than at freaking CF. He, to me, is a cheap option at 2B next year so we can save up some payroll and try to bring a solid SS or OF

Well I look at it like this.
If we sweep them, there’s the deficit! We can certainly make up half a game.
If we go 5-1 against them, it’s only 2.5 games, certainly manageable.
4-2 – Well now it’s 4.5 games so it’ll take somewhat of a miracle or collapse from the Brewers. (Like getting swept by the Mets)
3-3 – 6.5 games? Ok now we need a Mets-esque collapse.
And of course if we lose the two series, I don’t see any scenario coming out on top unless we go undefeated.

He was blessed with Hall of Fame players at every stop he made. And no, he did not make them into Hall of Fame players during his tenure — they would have been even if Jim Essian was calling the shots.

second season in a row I've felt that way
something just isn’t right with this franchise anymore. It’s probably the result of a complex combination of interrelated causes, including just plain old bad luck, but I say let’s finally tell Tony to get the fuck out of town and see if that helps at all. Worth a shot, right?

and I think that, in return, relates to a systemic failure
of the management/FO to put the team in the best position to win (in combination, of course, with a failure of the players to execute). Seems like all the games that have gone to extra innings I’ve listened to the Cards blow it.
Until we dominate teams that are in dire straights such as the Cubs, and the others on the schedule, we’ve no shot at the post season.
Course for that happened the team needs to do a gut check, light a fire under their bench sitting asses, and play hard baseball to win.
But it’s still baseball and I love it, got to enjoy the remaining games left the season will be over most tick.

what kind of legal assistance can you get?
are you still an unpaid intern (for once, this is not meant as a low blow), because it’s possible you could qualify for legal assistance if you contact your legal aid office. Try legal aid of Western Missouri (if you are still in KC?) and see what they suggest.
I mean, I’m not qualified to give legal advice, but I would fight them on this one if they’re gonna be assholes about it, while also throwing in any other complaints I had about the apartment not being kept up properly the company.
My favorite words are goodbye, and my favorite color is red
again, not qualified to give legal advice
so don’t take this as gospel or as what you should argue (contact someone at legal aid and see what they suggest) but this contract seems ambiguous on its face (two months and 60 days can directly contradict one another, but somehow they are treated as equivalent in the contractual language). I know in many states, ambiguous contracts are construed against the drafter. Furthermore, a finding of ambiguity will allow the court to consider so-called parol evidence, or evidence of verbal agreements or clarifications to the contractual language that resolve the ambiguity (in other words, when they told you 60 days was okay).
Finally, as people mentioned in the other thread, I believe Missouri has a duty to mitigate. That means they have to actively try to re-let the apartment, they can’t just sit on their hands, claim damages in the full amount of Septmeber’s rent, and then collect from you.

Here, in the “Rent” section:
“If tenant intends to vacate the premises at the end of the original term, then Tenant must give Owner a sixty-one (61) day written notice of such intent to terminate in advance of the first day of the last month of the lease term”
Does that mean if we told them by 61 days of September 1st, we’re okay?

Landlords can be such dicks sometimes
I had a landlord a few years ago try to keep ~1/2 of my security deposit on bullshit grounds. A friend of mine who’s a lawyer wrote up a threatening letter for me pointing out that in my state at the time (Indiana), if a tenant has to take a landlord to court to recover $$ and wins the case he/she is entitled to collect legal fees from the landlord even if he doesn’t actually hire a lawyer – he could just estimate what the legal fees would have been, which of course could easily run into a few thousand bucks. Of course they immediately backed down and gave me my money back.
I know many other states have comparable laws to protect tenants from scam-artist landlords, like allowing double or triple damages if the tenant has to go to court to recover $$. So if they try to keep your deposit as Sept rent, hopefully your state has a comparable law you could threaten them with. I’m not a lawyer and don’t really know any details beyond what I researched in my specific case and what my friend told me, but it might be worth looking into whether your state has that kind of a tenant protection law.

one thing i don't understand about this team is that it was constructed to be offensively minded
and yet Tony keeps making “defensive substitutions” that make the team substantially worse offensively. That gives our pitching staff little margin of error, meaning that we have to rely on people like Rhodes to be way better than they actually are because there’s little chance that the next inning of Theriot, Patterson, whoever is going to get any extra runs.
it’s like, if i were an opposing manager, i’d love to play the cardinals in innings 7-9 because i could almost pitch around The Big Three (especially when Tony double switches)
by molina mo problems on Aug 19, 2011 6:21 PM EDT reply actions
it's one thing to build a team around the offense, and its core players
and having subpar offensive backups as long as they are defensively superior
this nonsense of letting the crappy backups have too much exposure is just plain ridiculous
yeah, that just happens way too often

as much as I love Albert
I am kind of hoping he does leave becauase I think Tony will also. This club needs some major changes. Getting a new manager and even a new GM who are willing to go with some of the young talented players we have would be so refreshing.
It seems like for every year Tony returns, the future of the ballclub becomes less bright. With a stable of talented young pitchers on their way up to the majors the next two years, the last thing I want is LaRussa and Mozeliak running this team with the fucking “win now” attitude.

I think we may need to confront the possibility that TLR might stay even without Albert
He knows he has an extremely pliable ownership group and/or FO. He knows he has a relatively toothless media environment here. He has his full complement of coaches. Why would he go somewhere else? Also he really isn’t that old for a manager. What else is he going to do with his time?
Plus, he is oh so close to 2nd place on the all time wins list. I think he may stay here regardless of what Albert does.

I think the only hope of getting rid of Tony
Is some other team offering him a job. For either more money or in a better position to win (which seems impossible, given this is a terrible division, but Tony can’t seem to win here lately).
Supposedly the White Sox might.
But unless that happens, Tony is never, ever going to leave. He obviously desperately has a need for money, otherwise he wouldn’t have done those Ray Vinson commercials. Which are just embarrassing on so many levels. Worse than Jimmy Jonhson doing those Extenz commercials.
i realllllly doubt tony did the commercials because he needs money.
Ray Vinson probably made a generous donation to ARF or something, or when they met they just got along really well. Or Tony just reallly gets a kick out of Ray Vinson.

One wonders what Albert thinks about Tony these days.
What exactly has Albert said about wanting to play under Tony over the years? After watching Tony piss away the Cardinals’ chances to succeed this season and in seasons past, is he just anxious to get out of here? Does he like Tony? Would he even consider a ‘him or me’ demand or would that be too dishonorable for Albert to do that to his manager? We all know Albert is an astute baseball player. What goes on in front of him day after day, he must notice it to some degree.
From the blackhole of the Iowa TV market.

So
Stevie Wonder is playing his first gig in Tokyo and the place is absolutely packed to the rafters. In a bid to break the ice with his new audience he asks if anyone would like him to play a request.
A little old Japanese man jumps out of his seat in the first row and shouts at the top of his voice “Play a Jazz chord ! Play a jazz chord !”.
Amazed that this guy knows about the jazz influences in Stevie’s varied career, the blind impresario starts to play an E minor scale and then goes into a difficult jazz melody for about 10 minutes. When he finishes the whole place goes wild.
The little old man jumps up again and shouts “No, no, play a Jazz chord, play a Jazz chord”. A bit annoyed by this, Stevie, being the professional that he is, dives straight into a jazz improvisation with his band around the B flat minor chord and really tears the place apart. The crowd goes wild with this impromptu show of his technical expertise.
The little old man jumps up again. “No, no. Play a Jazz chord, play a jazz chord”. Really angry now that this guy doesn’t seem to appreciate his playing ability. Stevie says to him from the stage “OK smartypants. You get up here and do it!”
The little old man climbs up onto the stage, takes hold of the mike and starts to sing …..
" A jazz chord to say I ruv you…"

Why is six afraid of seven??
Six hasn’t been the samsince he left Vietnam. Every time he closes his eyes, he’s sees Charlie hiding in the darkness of the forest. Not that you could ever see those bastards, mind you. They were fast and they knew their way around the jungle. He remembers the looks on the boy’s faces when they walked into that village and… oh Jesus. He shouldn’t think about that now. Sometimes he still hears Tex’s slow southern drawl. He remembers the smell of Brooklyn’s cigarettes. He always had a pack of Luckys. But the boys are gone now… he knows that. It’s—it’s just that he forgets sometimes. And sometimes the way that seven looks at him… it makes him think. Sets him on edge. And he feels like he’s back there… In the jungle… In the darkness.
Seven has a hook for a hand as well, which is very scary.

Campaigns, office/policy work for people in government, “party operative” work (which sounds Orwellian if you ask me), blah blah. I only mention it because I’ve noticed we seem to veer to the edge a lot recently and I want to discourage that.

he was then transfered to merry old england where he created a footie statistic named VAR (victories above replacement) and made millions, while creating a bitter divide between “stat wankers” and “meatheads.”
He now spends his days in an alcholic haze with aranathor and felonious monk.

albrfn dreamed of better days of cardinal baseball
the next morning, inspired, he put a mortgage (second?) on his home, and purchased a neglected corner pub. after years of work and failure, “Albrtfn’s Inn” made a modest return on the initial investment and eventually housed the reception of many a veebers weddings

I think I missed all this. I’d been out of the country for a while, and then when I got back I wasn’t really that active here so I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of stuff I have to catch up on still and I’m jus addressing it when I get the chance.

When WW got hurt
tpg did a fanpost where he proclaimed that he called the injury some years ago due to the Inverted W thing. And it typical tpg style, he went full-bore trying to say it with 100% certainty, although he had no data to back it up. He and AZ went at it pretty hard. If tpg had presented it a little differently and not immediately after the event, it might have gone differently. He had been doing this a lot lately. Some really epic threads.

Forsch was not easily forgotten
unbeknown to him his love got through & touch the cold, darkness where Tudor Fan heart once lived. Tudor Fan, now filled with hope & joy for the first time since his 5th birthday when his special Uncle Carl showed him the true meaning of life, went out into the Seattle streets & instead of killing the hobo’s like he did every weekend just so he could feel something, anything again, danced. he danced like no one was watching.
unfortunately someone was watching, the Seattle police where they promptly arrested him. you see Tudor Fan had gotten sloppy in his hobo killing ways & the last 15 were caught on ATM camera. he is now serving 10 life sentences in the super max prison somewhere in Colorado. where, some say it’s a coincidence, but i say it’s fate, his cell mate is named Carl. so you see, the story does have a happy ending.

the VEB class of 2008 are the killers from the video all the things that i’ve done. our commenting lives follow the arc of the degrading success of the baseball team we love. in the process, we learn to cope with themes as responsibility and the despair of aging and the human condition.

He made a reference on Twitter today too but because of the fact that Wrigley Field is a cesspool without lights I wasn’t able to watch the game (so I have no idea if during the postgame interview he told TLR to go fuck himself and his shitty Allen Craig-in-center lineup or what).
