Wow.
Is this like 1900 where to walk you need 9 balls? Instead, with this ump, you need 9 strikes for a K

yeah, that's legit
although since he got two gift strike calls in the same spot, it makes me think this ump is just bad.

I was watching Top Gun. did I miss anything
here’s the stuff I noted:
1. LLWS tournaments, N. California pitcher’s hero is Kyle Lohse. His cousin. Kid’s name is Kolby Button (nickname Manchild). Other team had lots of hard-hit balls and his infielders bailed him out.
2. Matt Holliday not only has his own shirt, he wore his own shirt to BP with what looks like his own picture on the back??
3. Shot of fan in a Cardinals Smoltz jersey.

I'm sure Hendry will talk him out of walking away from the $20 million...

Earth to Ricketts: you have a principal-agent problem.
DFA Patterson!!!
Was there talk in trading him?
If not, why not? Cubs should’ve moved him immediately after his comments during the Pujols-consecutive-walkoff incident
not much of a market for him, with that contract
if other teams refused to take him unless the Cubs ate most or all of his salary, I guess there’s not much point in moving him.

that's pretty much a worst-case scenario for STL
If he does retire, the Cubs have ~$25M extra to bid on Pujols next year. AND the cubs won’t be stuck with him.

A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
I dont think there is anyway Pujols signs with the Cubs,
First off, I don’t care how good Albert may be, the Cubs would still be a horrible team even if they managed to sign him, and despite the fact money is obviously important to Albert, I do believe he is the kind of player who does want to play on a winning team.
I could be wrong about this, but he also appears to really value the time he has spent here in St.Louis and all the Cardinal tradition. If he would leave for Chicago, he would immediately become hated by most of the fanbase….unless the FO really pisses him off during negotiations, I just do not see him going to Chicago.
I really think he ends up coming back, but if for some reason he does decide to go somewhere else I think it would be one of the big market AL teams. Mets, Dodgers and Phillies all seem to be out of the picture.

agreed
assuming he leaves, he’s going to want to go somewhere that needs one more bat, not to a place that needs a wholesale makeover or has major FO/ownership issues….
A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
I would rank these three as most likely destinations for AP outside of St.louis:
1. Angels: big market. he would def make them an immediate contender, could play 1st and it would seem like they have some money to spend after missing out on FAs this year.
2. Rangers: really same as LAA. missed out on FAs last year (Lee), ans they have a need at 1st and from what I have heard they will have plenty of money to spend.
3. Yankees: even though they dont need a 1st baseman they still scare me. If they dont win this year I could see ownership pushing Cashman to make a deal, no matter what the cost.

One of the things working to our advantage is Fielder
Especially considering how well he is playing this year. One of these teams willing to spend big on a bat is gonna land him, and some teams may even prefer Prince given his age.
by mick311 on Aug 13, 2011 12:11 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Especially if you assume mick311 is correct
Fielder is going to benefit hugely from being a DH later on in his career. He can only last so much longer fielding every day
Yankees don't have anywhere to put him
They need a DH, not a 1B. Fielder is such a perfect fit for them.
The Angels & Rangers are much more likely IMHO. But I still think he’s gonna stay.
A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
I dont think they do either, but we have seen them throw ridiculous amounts of money at players
Esp after failing in the postseason, which given their rotation this season, is likely. I know Albert doesnt want to DH, but if they throw 30m per for 8/9yrs, I think he would def consider.
by mick311 on Aug 13, 2011 12:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
One wildcard that might be a crazy figment of my brain: the Marlins
Essentially continue their current model, but essentially give Albert a massive chunk of the inevitable new stadium money and signal to the fans that they can count on seeing Albert the next 8-10 years. Instantly raise their profile in Miami and sell some season tickets to the new stadium.
I have heard that rumor too.
They have a good young core and with the new stadium, Albert would be appealing. I dont doubt he would prob like to play there too, but the Marlins are just so damn cheap, I cant see them actually offering anything that big. He would be making almost as much as the rest of the team combined! Haha

OK, Uggla hits his 2nd HR. Next batter is Chipper.
Z goes inside on him, but misses. Then goes waaaay inside, but Chipper gets out of the way. Ump immediately runs Z, then warns the Braves guys coming off the bench. Cubs didn’t come out, except for Quade who just looked bewildered. Z didn’t say a word, just went to the dugout, watched for a moment, then went in.

that's gotta be a weird feeling for a pitcher
an entire dugout full of guys coming for you, and your guys, sitting on the bench.

what happened?
A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
Hit in the face by ground ball.
May have broken his nose.

Nice game tonight
daughter’s talked me into getting seats in 150 right behind the plate instead of cheap seats elsewhere. They were pretty nice until the four half-drunk female insurance agents at some convention sat a couple rows in front of us and spent the whole game hitting on any male that would talk to them.
Oh, a question for anyone who may know, do the players ever sign after the game? and, how late do you have to hang around or does security run everyone off? We were late Wednesday for autograph night and tonight I forgot about the Busch Bash until too late. My grandson is a bit disappointed that he hasn’t gotten any autographs.
Does that even happen?
I havent gotten any autographs myself since I was a kid but dont ever recall players coming out after the game to sign stuff. When I was younger we would always try and get there way early for BP and alot of the players would sign then…i got McGwires autograph that way. I dont know if any of them still do that but thats what we always tried.

I go to BP when i go to games
and now take my kids…we go to visitors sides though and usually get more that way. this year the Marlins where in town, mostly not big names signed, but my kids loved it.
i have heard they do sign after games by the garages etc…but u may have to wait a bit, and come up short…
because TLR
I think some people wait at the exit to the players' parking lot
I have no idea where it is, but I do vaguely recall reading an article about people waiting there with varied success for autographs.
Yes, we got Holliday's as he was leaing the lot last year.
I think it’s gate one, on Broadway. the guards don’t really run anybody off, but they keep people back unless the players stop and roll down their windows.

So, CC Sabathia gave up five homers to the Rays yesterday
Then he stormed out, cleaned his locker, and said he was retiring from baseball.
Oh wait, that last part didn’t actually happen.

Also, I didn’t realize it at first, but the Rays won the game 5-1, which of course means that all five home runs were solo shots. Weird.

I can't decide if it's really unlucky or really lucky
He didn’t walk anybody, and he struck out seven. But he gave up ten hits, five of which were homers and I think two of which were doubles. So they hit the snot out of the ball, but nobody was ever on base when they hit the home runs. I mean, how often do you get away with that and “only” lose by four runs? I mean, the game was still pretty winnable for the Yankees, with their lineup.
