I really don’t think I’ve disliked a Cardinal more than him. His on the field antics, his chasing Ryan off to Seattle. And when push comes to shove, he stinks…you want to act like an ass on the field, then back it up, like Phillips or Braun…

is Theriot starting tonight?
2011 fWAR watch: Theriot = 0.2, Boog = 2.4 as of Aug 10

Everytime Al speaks
I’m reminded of this George Carlin bit:
this is about six years ago, I think.
– It seemed like it was six, about six years ago.
– Six or seven – possibly seven. Could be.
– Somewhere in there, six seven. More than six; less than seven.
– Let’s call it six and a half.
– So my mom and dad went on vacation to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky,
– and my dad found a big rock.
– What he thought was a big rock turns out it was a dinosaur turd,
– a petrified dinosaur turd, 27 pounder.
– You know, now that I think of it,
– it might have been eight years ago.
– That would have been close to Y2K, wouldn’t it?
– Remember Y2K?
– Whatever happened?
– Everybody’s all worried about that. Nothing ever happened.
– Ha, ha, ha, big fuss. Nothing every happened.
– You know? God.
– That was strange, you know. "
– "So let’s say – we’ll say it’s eight years.
– It was either eight or five.
– So my dad gave my mom this big turd.
– He says, ‘Here, Mom. This is a big dinosaur turd.
– Put it in your purse to take that home. ‘
– My mom said, ‘Dad, I don’t think this is a dinosaur turd.
– This thing is still warm.
– Whoever dropped this thing is still walking around in here,
– and we’d better get the fuck out of this cave. ‘
– Nine years ago.
– Nine.
– I know it was nine because my wife was pregnant with our first boy,
– Mach Moody Benel Sayid Ben Salem,
– and he’s ten now.
– Or is he? He’s 11. Maybe he’s 11.
– He’s either 11 or 5."
– And while all of this is going on you’re searching through your mind
– for something graceful and diplomatic you can say
– to bring the conversation to a close,
– and all I can ever come up with is shut the fuck up.
– Shut the fuck up. Shut the fuck up.
– Shut the fuck up.

Weird inning.
Furcal had enough heart for Flippy to make an error.
Jay didn’t have enough heart to get a hit, but he did have enough to out-run the potential dp.
Albert had some heart, but not enough to get a home-run.
Similar deal with Berk.
And Freese really lacked heart that inning.
I mean, I think there was a good amount of heart that inning, but maybe not as much as it could have been.

yeah, this.
If 10 hits gets him to .300 from where he stands, if he can hit .300 the rest of the way and add 10 hits beyond that (or 1 every 4 games since there’s around 40 games left), he’ll end at .300.

yes if he goes 10 for 10 in any sample (contiguous or not)

Also, don’t underestimate how important grades are in law school, especially first year grades.
Don’t go to an expensive, lower tier law school. It’s a recipe for high debt and low job prospects.

the cardinals are unpopular all over the internet
tony la russa’s easy to hate, the best fans in baseball thing is irritating, etc.
which is amazing
because AFAIK, cardinals fans have never claimed to be “the best fans in baseball”- it’s a title bestowed upon them by some hack at ESPN. We’re just folks who like baseball, and like the cardinals, and like to see the game played the right way. Which means we like to win. And dislike TLR, because he seems to have an amazing ability to not-win with really, really good teams.
OK, maybe I’m projecting, a bit. But the “best fans in baseball” bit is silly.

It seems like a fairly accurate title to me
I’ve been to major league games in about a third of the parks. The only place I’ve ever gotten a hard time was in Cincy, and that was while they were irrelevant. not the pitcher ;)
TLR did the right thing, for a while, then caved to pressure.
it would take a brave young manager with new ideas to pull off something like moving Albert out of #3. TLR could never do it. He’s too weak, at this point.

Theriot
in case you really wanted to know
by ArkansasTravs on Aug 12, 2011 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions
and that's the point.
If you can;t bat Ryan Theriot 9th, against the Brewers, in a must-win game, you’ll never bat Pujols in an optimum lineup position.
(although, ironically, his off year wrt getting on base has made the #3 spot a pretty decent place for him).
"Now that they've come out with that great stat, 'innings pitched per inning'-- is there anything they don't have a stat for these days?" -Al Hraboski, 3 Jun 11
not sure I get your point
are you saying Carpenter/Theriot would be a better 8/9 than Theriot/Carpenter? ’cause Carp has to bat somewhere. The real problem was not following the platoon we seemingly have at 2nd and starting Theriot instead of Skip based on 13-14 AB “histories”.
by ArkansasTravs on Aug 12, 2011 1:57 AM EDT up reply actions
batting theriot 9th would have been better.
OBP is most valuable in the 9th/1st spots of the order. Putting a pitcher there always hurts the team. Tony did the right thing, and batted the pitcher 8th for a while, but seems to have abandoned it this year.
Overall, theoretically, it will probably cost us one win, rounding up, but it’s the kind of thing someone wanting to win, does. One win is $5M. Same with batting Albert leadoff. Or second. Or fourth. A good manager would bat guys with low OBPs and high SLGs 3rd, since they (comparatively) often bat with no one on and 2 outs.
Really, it boils down to giving the best hitter the most PA’s- this isn’t rocket science. Even though it takes advanced math to prove it to guys like TLR.
