i know. but the point is, when we traded boog, we should have gotten an actual SS

i understand that he had to go for whatever reason. but the replacement was stupid.

i was going to say the same thing in the other thread

Basically the reasoning for Theriot was that they felt he could be a great SS and provided a much better bat than Ryan and got on base more than Ryan. For all I cared, Ryan could have batted .200, as long as he has that amazing defense, seeing as how the majority of our rotation depends on groundballs.

I don’t mind Furcal, but this just proves what we’ve known all along….Boog, like Colby “had to go.”

Yeah but really no need to bring it up.

I do like how you said “remember when he was a douchebag” implying I’m not a douchebag now.

I always wondered why I was called douchebag then and then one day, out of curiosity, I went on urban dictionary and checked out their definition

An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.

Emphasis mine. So then I was like wow… combined with my literally zero knowledge of sabermetrics, and weird thinking that everybody was dying to read my articles, it almost fit the description to a tee.

by bailorg on Jul 31, 2011 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I bet its Jones. It seems like the org has given up on him a bit after his demotion back down to AA.

It looks like Mo may have actually made a decent trade for once (obviously we will have to see the money/prospect involved) as long as it isn’t Pham or Tavares. The farm is really weak at SS, so maybe we will even have a shot to bring him back next year instead of Theriot if he plays well and can stay healthy, not by picking up his option, of course but even if he plays well down the stretch I can’t imagine he would draw another multi-year deal and even at one-year, 5 million or so he wouldn’t be too much more expensive than Theriot after arbitration. Any thoughts?

I am still pretty surprised by this trade though. I was thinking a few weeks back what a nice buy-low pick up Furcal would be. I grew up in Atlanta and saw him play quite a bit, but he never really got along with Cox and had his share of off the field problems, so I didn’t think there was anyway he would be a guy TLR would want on the team. It will be interesting to see how they get along.

cool

we had a weekend course on preparing for our board exam. I had a book with three practice exams. They suggested setting times and everything to take the practice exams exactly like you were taking the actual exam. Some even take it down to the finest details, like eating the same things each time you take a practice test.

It's not that hard really.

Considering the other sports are usually once a week. So you pay attention to that game that one day and you qualify for die-hard.

Baseball die-hards are the ones who truly spend every day on baseball though.

I don’t think the other sports nearly take away that much of their time so if you’re only baseball, you’re probably still “too much” until November hits.

2002-ish

I missed a month and got shut off. Then I got caught up and got my phone turned back on. I needed my phone for work so I begged them to turn my service back on for the couple of days it would take for the check to get there, and they actually did. They gave me some sort of credit. Then when they took the credit away a few weeks later, they shut me off again. I had to go thru this incredible rigamarole (up to including getting a photocopy of the check from my bank and faxing it to Sprint) to prove to them that they had actually deposited my check.

So I was back on for a while, and eventually they randomly shut me off again for no reason and I told them to go fuck themselves. They sent me to collections and I told them to sue me. I got nastygrams in the mail for years, and it was all bullshit. They wanted me to pay them twice for services I wasn’t getting.

The worst part was repeatedly dealing with Claire.

But we already got Corey Patterson...

so that would be a waste.

I posit that The White Stripes are the best band of the past 10 years

Discuss.

oh hell no

Raconteurs > the Stripes. Meg White can’t play.

I agree

But Jack White wrote better stuff when he was with her, and I’m pretty sure he played drums in the studio recordings.

don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Stripes really

it’s just gimmicky as hell. Plus I’m not a fan of the duo thing. You have to truly rip it the fuck up to make a rock duo work. Just about every duo band would be improved IMHO with a bass player.

yeah

that’s some cool shit I don’t know very well. Other quality duos off the top of my head: Lightning Bolt and Cheval de Frise.

I agree

But Jack White was on peak form with his songwriting and singing, and he overdubbed bass and other guitars sometimes.

I really like the White Stripes. Only their last album isn’t great.

i posit that "best"

is mostly a subjective term and this conversation will probably be based on opinion rather than something that could be termed “statistical goodness of music”, but a couple bands from the last ten years that i think are better than the white stripes, off the top of my head:
1. the national
2. the dear hunter
3. manchester orchestra
4. okkervil river
5. the arcade fire

i don’t even think that the white stripes is the best jack white project. but to each his own, and all the bands i just listed are very different from the white stripes.

Music question.

I’ve never gotten into the Strokes, but never had much exposure other than a couple of hits in 2002.
Are they worth the attempt? I’ve never really had the desire to try ‘em out, but I’ve got some friends who swear by them.

One of my friends loves them

I’m not really a fan, but I haven’t heard a ton of their catalogue.

As a manager? Heck no.

I mean, look, if a man will stoop as low as doing a commercial (infomercial, even) for Ray Vinson, then he’s obvious willing to do anything for money. As long as he keeps getting a job offer, well, he’s going to manage.

With the Cardinals?

Maybe. If the Cardinals look like they are rebuilding next year (no Pujols, no Berkman, no Jackson re-signed) he might not be back.

Indeed, what was it, last year? The year before, he reluctantly came back to the Cardinals after pursuing another job (Mets? Can’t remember).

And now there are rumors he’s after the White Sox job…
