Reports: St. Louis Cardinals Trade of Colby Rasmus "Imminent"
Earlier this morning, the White Sox and Blue Jays completed a trade that sends right-handed starter Edwin Jackson and utility man Mark Teahen to the Tortonto Blue Jays for starter Zach Stewart and reliever Jason Frasor. The rumor mill only churned faster as speculation mounted that there would be an additional move by the Blue Jays, who would flip Jackson to a contender. Speculation centered on the St. Louis Cardinals and Colby Rasmus.
Now MLB Trade Rumors has channeled the unicorn, posting that the Cardinals will trade Colby Rasmus, a twenty-four year old center fielder under club control until 2014, for Edwin Jackson, right-handed Octavio Dotel, and left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczinski.
*****UPDATE*****
Buster Olney has apparently corrected what may be an erroneous report by St. Louis Post-Dispatch report Joe Strauss. It seems that Strauss may not have had the whole story on the Rasmus trade. In what could be another example of national media types having the scoop on St. Louis Cardinal roster machinations, Olney tweets that the trade breaks down like this.
CARDINALS RECEIVE:
Edwin Jackson
Marc Rzepczinski (apprently also known as "Scrabble")
Octavio Dotel
Corey Patterson
BLUE JAYS RECEIVE:
Colby Rasmus
Trever Miller
Brian Tallet
P.J. Walters

by Notorious PSC on Jul 27, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions
You're welcome
I just don’t understand the WORST TRADE EVER response from everyone on here.
I have read in detail the virtues of Colby as a ball player. Yes, he is quite talented. However, the cardinals were paying him and asked him to listen to (or be open to at least) coaching from the people they pay to coach. From what I could tell he seemed to want to go his own way and that is not something that an organization should let its young players do. Tony Rasmus needs to stop being a “helicopter” parent and let actual pros and instructors do their job. Colby could also man up and do what his boss wants.
We definitely did not get back “nothing”. There is very limited pitching available and we got a lot of that (yes short term I know) back. I wish they had done better but I feel better about this year’s team today than I did yesterday.
I think you hit the wrong link, you are looking for the PD boards.
You know, where everything is a knee jerk reaction and everyone worships Tony LaRussa. You know, you probably go there all the time so I dont know why I’m describing it.
A lion does not concern himself with the opinion's of the sheep. - Tywin Lannister
I'm glad you're glad we lost a good and potentially great player
in exchange for nothing that comes close to replacing his value, and probably actively makes us worse.

So you’re one of those fans who likes it when a team trades away a cheap, cost-controlled, potentially-excellent, currently good player for a rental pitcher and a pu-pu platter. Now we know.

Yeah that makes A LOT of sense
Trading away one piece of the future of the team for two POS and Edwin Jackson, yeah thats the way to build a winning team. I wanted to have faith on MO, but it’s all ruined now. I am officially on the fire Jon Mozeliak bandwagon.

For what it's worth, I could understand someone liking this trade
but I definitely disagree. If someone really thought that Rasmus just wasn’t going to be worth the headaches any more, or that Jackson will truly be a game changer, or something like that, I could understand the point of view.
The very symbol, the outward and visible expression of the drive, and push, and rush and struggle of the raging, tearing, booming nineteenth century! -- Mark Twain
I'm hoping for addition by subtraction for all 4 former Cardinals involved.
I think that it will be unfairly looked at down the line because my guess is that Colby will play better in Toronto than he ever could have here given the circumstances.

This is the very definition of throwing good money after bad
F*ck with Perez and trade him for 30 cents on the dollar
F*ck with Ryan and trade him for 30 cents on the dollar.
F*ck with Ludwick and trade him for 30 cents on the dollar.
Then, to chase those mistakes, we trade another quality RRHP for a trash SS and now an elite young talent at an incredibly important position for the RRHP that we got rid of and another SP because the one we traded for and extended last year is garbage.
These guys need to be fired and now.

I think TLR must think that sending these guys to Canada
is like sending them to Siberia
At the time of that trade,
I thought Mozeliak did very well. Remember that TLR boxed him in by announcing at a winter meetings press conference the, essentially, Rolen would not be back. Then, somehow, Mozeliak turned Rolen into another third baseman with an injury history. It was as good a gamble that Glaus would stay healthy as Rolen. Not a bad move. It just panned out badly due to Glaus getting injured during his second season in St. Louis.

we got one pretty good year out of Glaus, as it turned out
kind of like Mulder in that regard, actually….
A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
At the time,
Rolen was diminished due to his shoulder injuries and had, I believe, three years left on his deal. We traded him for Glaus and picked up Glaus’s option, which meant we were getting two years of Glaus. In ’08, Glaus posted a 5.2-WAR season. In ’08, Rolen posted a 2.9-WAR season. After ’08, we looked like the winners of that trade. Then, Glaus had shoulder problems and returned a shell of his former self in ’09, while Rolen chugged along putting together a 4.4-WAR season between Toronto and Cincy.

A testy Pujols when asked by @JoeStrauss if he thinks this injury will affect his future "that’s a stupid question, Joe," then walks off.
I mean, I guess
We still had to outbid everyone else for Holliday when he was a FA. We trade Brett Wallace’s entire career for 2 months of Holliday. I’m still not convinced we should really be saying he won that trade.

yes, i'd agree
in fact, i’d still call it a good deal. in add’n to getting Glaus, they shed Rolen’s $12m salary for 2010. if they’d still had that salary in place, then no Matt Holliday.
I thought Rolen had 3 years remaining at the time,

not great but Ludwick hasn’t been the same since he left and Westbrock is what was expected
"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."

this is an interesting one
because Wallace was traded two more times in 2 years, we have some idea of what his true market value was.
Anthony Gose or
Michael Taylor
I think Gose would have been a much better acquisition, Taylor probably not, just from looking at what they’ve done the last few years in the minors, but someone with time to look up (recent) scouting reports can probably give a better read.

Prior to his acceptance, while Chairman of the Board of Directors Bill DeWitt was still doing interviews with other candidates, it appeared Cleveland Indians assistant GM Chris Antonetti was the favorite. However, he was apparently scared off by the strong relationship of Mozeliak and Jeff Luhnow from the front office, who contributed to Jocketty leaving. Antonetti also said Indians ownership made him want to stay.

I agree
It will be tough to talk about this team without referring to how incompetent this move was. With every mediocre start by Jackson, every boneheaded Patterson play, every blown hold by Scrabble (?)…
I just got through living through this with the second half of the Celtics season after their equally inexplicable trade of Kendrick Perkins.
The only way this doesn’t end in a fiery pile is if Jackson turns out to be a solid 2/3 in the NL, the bullpen guys are lights out, and Berkman isn’t out too long.

No thank you.
Re-signing and extending veteran starters is a bad habit. Hopefully the combination of our farm system and the expiring deals of Lohse and Westbrook help us break that habit. Next season, we have: Wainwright, Garcia, Westbrook, and Lohse under contract. We might pick up Carp’s $15MM option. In 2013, we could have: Wainwright, Garcia, Lynn, Miller, and Martinez.

No room in the Jays rotation
The Jays wanted to see what they had in Jo-Jo Reyes (nothing it turned out). Romero, Cecil, Drabek and Litsch were the others while Morrow was on the DL. Morrow came back and Cecil went down. Rzepczynski was probably good enough to start but Reyes had no options, so Zep went to the pen.
He’s probably good enough to start but his command comes and goes so sometimes the best you’ll get is 5 innings from him.

I disagree that the 2011 team even got better
Rasmus over Jay is probably around the same as Jackson over KMac. Our bullpen is slightly improved, but our outfield depth is diminished. Meaning if (when) Berk/Holliday misses more time we have Skip Fucking Schumaker in the outfield.

Have some patience with young players you dumbshit. It’s pretty clear Mo has no idea how baseball works. Not every player is going to come up to the bigs and hit .285 with 25 HR his first 3 seasons. We got burned when we traded Chris Perez, and it looks like the front office didn’t learn from it.

Hard to believe
But Mo is involved, so one could see him turning down an offer for a good pitcher in the AL East and a TB prospect to get a mediocre AL starter and some spare parts.
Since Mo was involved, I can’t imagine TB (and every other team) doesn’t initially try to pry Miller or Martinez off him with their initial offers.

well over on Bluebird Banter
the scouting report is that Repcyznki
Fastball in the high 80s low 90s. Excellent downward movement on his fastball.
Most of the time his control is okay, but once in a while he loses it and it gets ugly.
Very good slider, but again he sometimes has control issues.
Changeup… not so much.
i really thought he was going to be part of our starting 5. I think he’s fully capable of starting.
But again, he’s been very, very good coming out of the Pen.
i see no reason why he can’t go back to a starter, he lost moreso, because we have so many other guys.
And then he was so much better in the pen then starting, never thought to move him back.

Fuck you Jon Mozeliak!
Now aside from the Holliday trade, Mozeliak’s trades include Khalil Greene for Luke Gregerson, Brendan Ryan for Mikel Cleto, a 24 year old in single A with no command, Chris Perez for a rental of DeRosa, Ludwick for Westbrook whatever the fuck he dumped, it doesn’t matter, he actually traded FOR Ryan Theroit and even worse Pedro Feliz, and now when we just had Berkamn get hurt, Colby is starting to heat back up and we’re trying to resign Pujols to a 7 trillion dollar contract we’re dumping a cost controlled 24 year old center fielder who had a 133 OPS+ last year and was worth 4.0 WAR as a 23 year old, at the tail end of huge 2 month slump is still on track for a 2+ WAR year even if he didn’t get he BA and OBP back up, and he won’t end the year hitting .240, who has immense upside both at the plate and on the field for less than 1/2 of a season of Edwin fucking Jackson! When combined with the fact that his only good signings were Berkman who apparently fell in our laps when nobody else wanted him and Holliday being resigned when no one else gave him half of the years that we did and his other signings include resigning Lohse to a $40 million contract, resigning Westbrook, signing Miguel Batista, and signing Suppan and Miles midseason last year after other GMs told him how much they sucked by releasing them he is a HORRIBLE GM!

Keith Law borrowed from BBB
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have made a terrible organizational move by allowing their aging manager to run off the best hitting prospect the team has produced since drafting Albert Pujols. Whether La Russa was mostly responsible or only shares responsibility with Rasmus and his father, it is clear that La Russa’s my-way-or-the-highway mentality has hurt the organization for this year and several years to come with the Rasmus fiasco, and unfortunately the front office’s decision to retain La Russa for 2011 has come back to haunt them. Rasmus has the potential to be a 5- to 6-win player at his peak, and there’s no manager in baseball who can produce that kind of value.

surely you're not suggesting Tony has no influence whatsoever

first off. fuck you.
secondly. how is that you are so familiar with the inner workings of cardinals’ mgmt?
one of them has a better relationship with the owner than the other does.
I’ll let you guess who is who.

Also, I would kiss Rui on the kiss cam.
if that;s true, then it's the fault of ownership
for allowing such an upside-down relationship. And it makes mozeliak a little bitch for tolerating it.
Well fuck it
Blame ‘em all. It’s an organizational failure at this point. If Mo, TLR, or DeWitt had put their foot down and said “hold the phone, let’s hold on and see what Rasmus does from here out” or something, this doesn’t happen. I’ve given up on excusing Mo for DeRussa just b/c I liked how Mo ran the team in 2008.

Okay...
I’ll point out a couple positives:
We swapped out Valdes, Walters, and Miller in favor of Kmac, Dotel, and Scrabble
Jackson over Kmac is an upgrade
We get a supplemental pick
Scrabble can be a #3 starter for the league minimum next year

why was he in Toronto’s bullpen?

i agree w/ you
looking only at this season - which is all that La Russa ever does, and therefore all the StL FO ever does - i think the trade improved the team. they addressed their biggest weakness (pitching staff) without diminishing their biggest strength (offense). i’m sure the Reds and Brewers feel their chances to win in 2011 are now diminished.
but in exchange for two months of improvement, they’ve set themselves way back for 2012 through 2014. it’s a classic TLR type of tradeoff - short-sighted, impatient.

I'm not sure
that TLR cares about what happens a year or two or three down the road.
He seems to want to win now—while he’s still around.
The FO, of course, should take a longer view…
To me,
recent years have completely invalidated the false tension projected on the organization here at VEB. Mozeliak and TLR are a team, not adversaries. There may be disagreements, and perhaps when Mozeliak started they had differing points of view, but it seems clear to me that they are a personnel tag team.

i think the tag-team is La Russa and Pujols. they’re the two most powerful figures in the organization. if they are both in favor of something, Mozeliak resists them at his peril.
i agree. TLR sets the mandates.
Pujols enforces along with Carp. Everyone else falls in line. The interview yesterday didnt help Mo out any either.

i think Mo has to walk a tightrope
to some extent, he has to serve the wishes of a mgr such as tony, who has a strong political base throughout the industry. if Mo tries to strongarm La Russa, he’s going to end up just like Colby Rasmus -- ie, with diminished value and a diminished role. baseball is a big frat house, and you can’t make enemies with one of the really powerful cliques or you can find yourself run out of the club. so yeah, there’s probably a big element of self-preservation to it. i think Mo pushes back as much as he dares.
there’s also the fact that Mo needs to make the playoffs this year. he looked very bad last season when Jocketty and the Reds knocked the Cards off; that was embarrassing. if he fails to make the playoffs yet again this season, his job could be in jeopardy — and he won’t be guaranteed another shot as a GM.
if mo's position is leveraged by TLR
as much as everyone seems to think. doesn’t it make Mo a bit of a joke among his peers?
How long have we been saying La Russa was about to retire now?

He has struck out 7.18 per 9 innings, which should go up as he moves to the NL. He has only walked 2.88 per 9 innings, too. His ERA is 3.92, which is higher than his FIP (3.21), and xFIP (3.42). He’s a good pitcher.

Well, our attendance seems to be doing pretty well right now.
And we haven’t won a playoff game since ’06.
That won't be attributed to this trade.
Mo may get fired but it won’t be because of this trade.

I agree that Mo doesn't get fired for this trade...
but it’s one more step towards making the Cardinals worse past 2011. The farther out they are from making the playoffs, the more chances Mo has of getting fired. Hence, Luhnow moves one step closer to GM consideration.
was that rumoured ray's offer real?
’cos that makes this all worse.

Feelings
This trade makes me sad because we traded a guy who I wanted to watch play for years, sad because we did it in a dumb, unprofessional way, and sad because we just got worse as a team over the long term.
But, I’m going to try and learn a lesson from a fink’s sanguinity about all things baseball, and approach it like this:
I like Colby Rasmus, and I’m going to root for him in Toronto. I hope he has a great career.
I like Jon Jay, and I hope he gets a chance to shine, steps up to it, and proves to be more than we imagined. He won’t be Rasmus, but I still like watching him play.
I don’t know much about the guys we just traded for, but I’ll be pulling for them. Jackson seems like he could be valuable down the stretch. Scrabble looks like a good piece for the bullpen this year, and hopefully a decent starter in the future. Dotel seems harmless once you forget how we obtained him. No comment on Patterson.
Now I’m going to spend the rest of the day listening to old Television albums to remind myself that there are still badass things in this world.

What really stands out...
…when I look at E. Jackson’s stats on Baseball Reference: Agent: Scott Boras. Oh, dear. Yes, my favorite team in the whole wide world traded a mild head ache of a (sort of this year) under performing COST CONTROLLED player for a free agent SP with a 4.53 162 game average ERA who is controlled by Scott Boras. (insert frowny face here)
Honi soit qui mal y pense.
And now we'll re-sign him and get him for 4 more years!
We’ll have to pick 2 guys between Loshe, Westbrook, and Jackson for the rotation next year! You can’t go wrong with any of those 3 players who have salaries that completely match their on-field performance.
Guys, this deal's not so bad
According to ESPN, we’re also getting Kevin Kolb out of the deal. He has a pretty good arm and decent speed. Probably be a pretty good outfielder.

Lou Brock loves Lamp.

Kolb sucks.
He’s an awful decision-maker and won’t get any better when he leaves Philly for Arizona. They will be wishing for Derek Anderson by the end of next season.

Well, until this point I'd been okay with Mo and thought TLR was basically the same or better than other managerial options
But I think this is the last straw. I’m really read for some turnover in management. Let’s get new FO leadership in here, try a new manager for the first time in forever, and see if we can at least try running the team with a little common sense.

I'm going to make a couple of predictions
Jon Jay’s production slumps and his average will plummet. See: Post Ludwick Trade
Berkman regresses…
Jackson is actually does worse than McClellan in our rotation.
We finish 2nd again this year after our offensive production declines because our leading run scorer now plays in Canada.
A lion does not concern himself with the opinion's of the sheep. - Tywin Lannister
I agree Jay will be worse going forward
Don’t see much reason for Berkman to regress.
Jackson is good, K-Mac sucks. Jackson will be a big improvement there, you’re just being emotional. (But then he will leave after the season.)

come on
absent serious injury, there’s no reason to think that berkman is going to suddenly get worse. he has been awesome all season. second, jackson has been worth 3 WAR this season. he’s been worth 3 or more WAR over the last three seasons. k-mac has barely been replacement level. jay projects to be only slightly worse going forward than he currently is, and he still projects to have a .347 wOBA.
maybe, MAYBE, one of these three things will happen. but probably not.

I remember reading about how Jose Bautista basically went from scrub the the best hitter in baseball when he came to the Jays, they stopped trying to get him to “go the other way” and just let me grip and rip. Now he just pulls the ball and crushes it every time.
Trying to get a pull hitter to go the other way sounds familiar.

Take a deep breath
Patterson for Tallet… Slight edge to Cards; old and worthless for old and worthless
Dotel for Miller… Slight edge to Cards; old and okay for old and okay
Walters for Jackson… Edge to Cards; long reliever/spot starter for 2nd half of decent pitching and Type B pick later
Rasmus for Scrabble… Edge to Jays; young, cost-controlled CF with decent numbers and potential for young, cost-controlled starter-turned-reliever with decent numbers. Both around same age.
You guys flipped when we lost Anthony Reyes, but he went nowhere after he was traded. Boog isn’t hitting well for the Mariners. Ludwick isn’t setting the world on fire for the Padres. Rolen for Glaus was better for us for half of the time. Yeah, losing Perez for DeRosa sucked, but if DeRosa didn’t get injured, I bet he would have led us further than we got. Greene for Gregorson sucked, but who knew Greene would lose his mind?
Jay will do fine in CF. Patterson will do fine off of the bench. Valdez and Scrabble make good LOOGYS for now. K-Mac in the pen is good for us. There’s no guarantee Rasmus would have ever lived up to expectations with or without TLR. The last few years in MLB and AAA he didn’t set the world on fire; he was decent. As long as he listens to his father over MLB coaching, however, he will never be a superstar.
Next year we could get a Type B for Jackson and move Scrabble into the rotation. Rzep might turn into a real weapon for us; fuck Mike Maroth comparisons.
Now everyone please calm down.

I honestly kind of u fucking hate this whole organization until Tony is gone. last year, he may have been the worst manager in baseball. And this year, well, he decided to forego fucking the org over for just the current season, and instead thought it better to fuck us over for the next 3-5.

nothing to do with that
if we lose Jackson we get draft compensation
the 3 PTBNL are going to be from a pool of players (probably not good with the “or cash” part) and we can choose 3 of thoe players out of that pool or just take a few million instead. expect to either get MiLB filler or cash.

if we insert him into the rotation, aren’t we freeing up some money there, too? and the person replacing rasmus is also cost-controlled.
that said, i dont think we were keeping albert either way. i think if the FO thought there was a chance of keeping albert, this trade would not have happened. this is a win now while we still have albert kind of deal.

We already had a very good pitching staff (8th in the majors if I remember right).
Our offense certainly didn’t get any better with this trade.
If anything it’s a lateral move this year and a big head first dive off into the Grand Canyon for the next three.

he’s been a very good owner over the years
but he’s got a major blind spot with TLR & it will be the teams downfall. if it hasn’t been already with yet another short sighted win now move. TLR is basically Connie Mack now. he can do whatever he wants, get whatever he wants & stay for as long as he wants. and allowing this the worst thing DeWitt can do as an owner

Stupid FanGraphs
Long-term, with Jackson departing after the season and Colby Rasmus under team control for the next three years, the Cardinals appear to take a hit, but by design. As the aforementioned story presented, the Cardinals and Colby Rasmus just didn’t seem to be able to reconcile their differences — with both parties likely at fault — and at some point, GM John Mozeliak had to cut his losses. The Cardinals managed to do so without weakening themselves noticeably in the short run, and with the lack of leverage given Rasmus’s situation, that’s probably as well as the Cardinals could do.
Emphasis mine. What?
