Free Tyler Greene

What AAA shortstop has this slash line:  .319/.412/.531?

Star-divide

It's a SSS (131 pa's), but it is none other than the much-maligned and forever-banished Tyler Greene:

.319 .412 .531 .943 with 8 steals.

We can't use that? Seems like we could use that. Remember, T. Greene has historically taken awhile to adjust to new levels...and he was used mostly as a reserve at the majors.

And consider this: how could he be worse than Ryan Theriot?  Theriot is currently posting an OPS 17 points lower than Brendan Ryan.  Than Brendan.  Ryan.  Oh, and Theriot has the worst F% in the majors for the position.  And he has terrible range and a ton of errors.  And...

Free Tyler Greene.

LOY!

That said, it’s odd to see a fanpost actually authored by someone I’ve heard of.

Trade him to HOU for Barmes

As I said earlier, HOU gets salary relief and a younger player. We get an all-glove SS who is worth more (WAR) than Theriot. Even the Commish said yesterday that getting a defensive-minded SS is the most pressing need.

might as well just bring up Jackson if an all glove player is what you want.

Agreed. We’ve got an all-glove guy in the system. No sense giving away TG for anotherl.

Barmes can hit a bit

little bit of pop and a not-so-great OBP. He’s actually probably quite similar to a reasonably good-case scenario for Greene.

why is this coming up again?

tyler greene is the most obvious example of a AAAA player i’ve ever seen. the dude has been given every opportunity to succeed at the major league level for parts of three years now and just hasn’t gotten it done. in 355 career PA’s he’s hitting .214/.302/.307/.609 for a .282 wOBA with a .279 BABIP and been worth -6.5 runs on defense. he just isn’t getting it done, and no amount of “regular plate appearances” or “consistent” starts is going to make him any better. he’s just not very good.

355 plate appearances is the farthest thing from "every oppurtunity to succeed'

I mean, he’s had 355 fucking PAs.

He’s been a part-time player most of the time. “Every opportunity” would be if he got regular starts over Ryan Theriot for the next two weeks.

Exactly...

355 PAs in one season is being given the opportunity to succeed. He has not been given the opportunity to adjust to anything, let alone succeed.

Every opportunity? 120+ average PA’s over 3 seasons is every opportunity? Not to mention in a reserve role and at multiple positions?

355 PA’s is nothing. It’s half a season. Tell me why I should credit 355 PA’s and ignore the 2500+ where he has a .779 OPS. Or the 1000+ at AAA where he has an .820 OPS.

I'd be fine with giving him time to figure out his stroke in the majors if his defense were good.

However he’s been pretty shitty in that department too.

Why?

Because the club is paying 3M+ to a vortex of suck at SS currently.

So that makes him worse than Theriot, how?

The only two

Cardinal players I have publicly criticized for their overall play on this site are Ryan Theriot and Tyler Greene. I never criticized Miles or Skip.(except for maybe a particular play or bad one day performance or such) In fact I have defended both on occassion when I felt they were unfairly attached at times. But overall I have seen value in both of them.

Tyler Greene, almost from the beginning annoyed me with his play, both on offense and defense. For the better part of three years I made no comment about it though until the day before he was sent down, when I launched an attack on him with a post on this site.

Over the years, I have seen a lot of young players come to the majors that have good career minor league stats but just seem to be intimidated by the majors and just choke and can’t perform at the major league level. To me Greene seemed to be one of those.

And on the other hand, I have seen a number of players come from the minors and actually perform as good or better at the major league level. Seems like they just relish the opportunity and readily adapt to the majors where pitchers throw with more control and the game is played at a higher quality level.

Two player that I see that might turn out (and I say might) to be better performers in majors than minors are Descalso and Cruz.. Greene though, I don’t think so but you never want to close the door on anyone.

good post

I’m afraid I love the “idea” of Tyler Greene more than I actually love Tyler Greene. OTOH, we’re currently starting Daniel Descalso at SS…

I know it's SSS and all

but I’ve really liked what Descalso has done in his limited time at short so far.

by avs18fan on Jul 27, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd be happy with Descalso at short

unfortunately, that probably means Skippy at 2B. All of a sudden, with Punto out and Colby traded, we look very thin everywhere.

Still bitching to contact.

by Felonius_Monk on Jul 30, 2011 7:02 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah it was kind of a weird time to trade him when berkman was just going down with injury

hopefully it won’t be too bad. possible silver lining with punto: possibly gives more of a chance to allen craig to play second. but it’s a crowded spot with jared, terry oh, and tyler

my last avatar was traded.

It makes me wonder...

who’s the odd man out? It’s a little bit tough to decide if it’s Theriot or Greene. Given the hard-headedness of playing Theriot at SS, and the insistence that Skip is the regular 2ndbman from the start, I can’t wait to see what happens next. What’s the thinking going to be?
Green has never shown enough of any one thing to be considered a keeper but something keeps putting him back on the big club.
Meanwhile, Descalso sure gets a lot of playing time but isn’t considered a starter since Freese’s return and they’re currently looking for a new SS? (how come it’s taken this long to decide we need a new SS?)
The plot thickens and Craig hasn’t even returned yet.
I like Punto but I’m starting to think he might be injury prone.
I also wonder if TLR would know how to manage a set lineup if he had one. In his defense, he’s had to deal with more injuries these past few years than most and somehow manages to keep the team afloat. Sometimes he’s just plain lucky.
Having said all that, it’s a better circus than last year’s.

With Furcal

As a true switch hitter with almost no split, there’s no platoon advantage at short. That leaves Danny D and Skip both hitting from the wrong side, and Theriot as your right-handed utility infielder. We’d be better off, though, with Greene and Skip in a platoon and Danny D as the super sub. D.GOOCH

by Donald Gooch on Jul 31, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

yea,

and I’m not sure that’s the right move. Now that we have Furcal it seems to me that Theriot should go and Greene should stay and ride the bench again.
I guess Skip is at least holding his own. We should be getting Craig back pretty soon. Then what? The only place I can see squeezing him in is at 2nd, assuming Berk is in RF.
With any luck, we now only have 1 sore spot (2b) instead of 2. If Craig’s bat is healthy it may make up for any weakness in his glove.
It’ll be interesting.

Sigh

Can’t say I’m surprised. I guess it would have been a bit awkward to DFA Theriot after a 4 hit game…but we should have DFA’d Theriot. There is no reason to keep Greene in Memphis and Theriot on this roster except TLR obstinance. Sigh. D.GOOCH

Update

Tyler Greene’s line now in 237 plate appearances:

.330 / .415 / .596 with 12 HR’s and 15 stolen bases against only 1 caught stealing.

Man, I sure am glad we’ve got such a quality middle infield that a guy with a 1.011 OPS can’t crack the lineup.

Yesterday? He was only 3-5 with 4 RBI’s a double and a triple.
