The Cardinals have had a serious bullpen problem all year long. From day 1 the Bullpen has been an absolute mess. Sure we’ve had some little bright spots, like Eduardo Sanchez and Fernando Salas. But now Sanchez is gone indefinitely and Salas in the past week alone has give up 2 walkoff home runs. The Cards need bullpen help and they need it NOW. The Cardinals need to be aggressive at the deadline to get some help for that bullpen otherwise; I don’t think there’s any way that they win the Central this year. Of course the obvious question is, who do they go after. A lot of people have said go after Heath Bell the closer for the San Diego Padres and a guy who is most likely to be traded out of San Diego before the July 31rst deadline. The only problem with going after a guy like Heath Bell is that the other team in this case the Padres will be looking for prospects and good prospects at that. If the Cardinals were to trade for Heath Bell, they would most likely have to give up at least one of their best pitching prospects, most likely Shelby Miller, or Carlos Martinez. I’m not sure John Mozeliak is willing to give those guys up so the Heath Bell trade might be out of the question. A few guys the Cardinals might go after are guys like Jon Rauch, Jason Frasor, and Octavio Dotel of the Toronto Blue Jays. Or maybe even Tyler Clippard of the Nationals if he’s made available. Each of these guys would be players that would really boost the Cardinals bullpen and give it the immediate help that the bullpen so desperately needs. If the Cardinals can get that bullpen stable, then the Cardinals will most certainly have a great chance of bringing postseason baseball back to St.Louis.
