2011 Draft Preview Final: Aaron's Awesome Aggregation Abilities

Draft is tonight, everyone. I'll have a post up about it over at the RFT sometime this morning, but I just wanted to put up links to all the various scouting reports I've done over the spring, so they're easier to find if you wish to look back or find a particular player.

Part one was an overview.

Part two covered high school lefties Daniel Norris, Henry Owens, and Daniel Camarena.

Part three: college right-handers Taylor Jungmann, Alex Meyer, and Trevor Bauer.

Part four: middle infielders Francisco Lindor, Levi Michael, and Philip Evans

Part five: high upside players Bubba Starling, Blake Swihart, and Matt Purke

Part six: hitters Josh Bell, Nicky Delmonico, and Travis Harrison

Part seven: college pitchers Andrew Chafin, Grayson Garvin, and  Ian Gardeck

Part eight: college closers Tony Zych, Colton Murray, and Marcus Stroman

Part nine: a variety of interesting players, including the awesome Dominic Jose

Part ten: high school position players Austin Hedges, Javier Baez, and Larry Greene

Hope these help everyone.

Some Mock Draft picks:

Josh Gaab: Henry Owens, LHP, HS (California)
Minor League Ball Community Mock Draft: Josh Bell, OF, HS (Texas)
John Sickels: Javier Baez, SS/2B, HS (Florida)
Andy Seiler: Matt Harvey, SP, North Carolina

I pray to GOD the Matt Harvey falls that far and that the Cardinals take him if he does. However, I don’t think he’ll fall far enough for us to nab him. Most mocks have him going in the top 15.

I’m not a big fan of Baez — he’s toolsy but just doesn’t seem to project all that great. I’d rather mine the Latin American market for middle infielders than draft one with better players on the board.

The rumors I’ve seen have the Cardinals enamored with Owens, a lefty that has high upside and is projectable with a 6’7" frame, and Larry Greene, an outfielder with lots of tools and few skills. I think that Josh Bell would be the better pick though — he’s a similar player to Greene and has a little more polish and higher upside.

Any of these players would be good selections, but I’d much rather have the pitchers if it comes down to picking between them and the position players.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

I think the most likely scenario

right now is Owens/Dickerson/Greene. I hope this isn’t the case, but the war room has been pretty silent this year. I think Bell is closer to Starling than Greene. He’s got better power but less defensive ability than Starling, and will probably end up in RF. I’d be ok with an Owens pick, as long as it’s over Greene or Dickerson.

TBH I like ALL those mock picks

Baez is maybe a tiny bit of a reach at 22 in THIS draft but he fills an organisational need for us and I think he’s a top-30 guy most years.

As long as they don’t take Greene, Michael or Cron (?) in the first round I don’t mind too much. I like Owens and Bell a lot – they’d be two of the four I really want, quite like Swihart and Norris as well.

Not sure what I feel about Harvey – liked him a lot last year but the injury risk and high price is worrying. That said, I’m a fan of taking the best talent available, regardless of other considerations (and draft dollars return a lot more than FA dollars so I’m comfortable with the org spending big on drafts), so if he’s available I guess I’d pounce. But with mixed feelings.

Still bitching to contact.

I think Swihart's top of my list.

Although I realise high school catchers have a pretty terrible hit-rate in the draft. I just really think he looks like a fine all-rounder and a nice balance of polished skills and a pretty high ceiling.

Still bitching to contact.

Seiler

I’m sure you realize this but Seiler’s is from last season. Andy Seiler practically disappeared post-draft. Harvey went to the Mets last season.

heh, you're right

knew the mets picked him but thought his demands were too high. Didn’t realise they got it done on the last day of the draft.

Still bitching to contact.
