okay, we've had fun, but it's time to go, miguel. you never belonged on the team, and some people spent a lot of time pretending you did. at the top of the seventh, jaime bequeathed a game that was 6-2 cards. at the end of the seventh, it was 8-6. a lot of the baserunners were batista's, though a walk, a wild pitch, and a hbp from miller, and a single and a walk from motte didn't help. no, there's blame to go around, but this is the game where everyone with eyes and a brain should have realized miguel batista is not a major league pitcher. when kyle mcclellan rejoins us, there's no reason for him to stay on the squad, just none. all the babip and lob luck sustaining him has collapsed.

DL without any sort of Rehab?

No. Happens a lot when I guy only misses two weeks. K-Mac missed two starts, many other clubs would feel K-Mac after missing two starts gives you just as much chance to win as Lynn pitching.

Here’s to K-Mac going 7 innings.

You should just look at the guy pitch

a wild, very hittable fastball with not much else behind it. To be fair, he got a bit unlucky in this game (as least two, if not three of the hits were bad swings on balls out of the zone that just got lucky, and the Nats seemed to score 8 whilst only hitting about 4 balls out of the infield), but that doesn’t mask the fact he’s been throwing garbage for two months and getting super lucky with it.

I don't care of there is a logic or reason behind keeping him

he and Franklin are just unstable nuclear reactors, waiting to meltdown in the middle of a the Cardinals season. After tonight, there is literally no lead safe from either of those two. Atleast one of them has to go.

My illogical fan side of me wants him thrown in the Potomac. I can’t bear to look at him in a Cardinals uniform anymore.

I think it is pretty clear what the Cardinals will use their ‘one bullet’ at the trade deadline on: bullpen.

yeah

we will probably have to overpay for Bell after drawing out the drama of Batista and Franklin too long. I’m not very confident in Tallet either, and most people here are saying Miller needs to go too. this is like half the bullpen… something needs to be done I guess. starting rotation may be able to make it, although I must admit many of the concerns people have about that rotation in the playoffs are in the back of my mind. but that pales in comparison to the crappy middle infield (sound familiar?) and the Batista Franklinstein monster

but perhaps that is too much to wish for. luckily it seems most of the team can hit pretty well.

my main concern is the overall effect of a middle infield of theriot and schumaker. was worried about this before the season, and as many innings are logged those two are going to tax endurance of the starters more than it should, which will mean we will have to rely on the bullpen more, and with both Batista and Franklin lurking there that is very scary.

Honestly

If Pujols, Berkman, Holiday and Rasmus are all in the lineup at the same time, the MIF can be two bounceback stands and a limbo stick for all I care.

However, when the middle of our order pushes the team to put up 6 runs, we need people who can actually get the 9 outs needed in the 7th, 8th and 9th without giving up more than 5 runs.

I would like a new SS/2B as much as anyone and I hate spending resources to find bullpen help but as long as Tony has Franklin, Batista and Miller to use, not only is he going to use them out of stubbornness but also out of necessity.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 15, 2011 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

although with 2 terrible fielders in the mif it is costing the team runs and forcing the pitchers to throw more

that should be something to be avoided, especially when we have players to replace schu and theriot. if theriot must start it really should be at 2B. if he’s that mentally fragile so as to not play well at second base, he should be a bench player.

When Punto and Freese return

Our infield should look like this:

1B – Albert
2B – Descalso/Craig platoon
SS – Punto
3B – Freese.

I emphasize SHOULD. TLR will clearly continue to play Skip and Theriot, because that just what he’s going to do, dammit. The problem with Theriot is that we need SOMEONE who can lead off, and he’s one of the few guys on the team who actually looks decent in that spot. I suppose if Punto can continue to hit like he did prior to his second injury, he could man the top spot. But I wouldn’t consider that likely.

That’s why I like kicking the tires on Jose Reyes so much. He solves SO many problems with our middle infield and lead-off situation.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind seeing Allen Craig, David Freese, or even Yadi leading off, but I just don’t expect that to happen.

At this point they wouldn’t do that to K-Mac. He has worked hard for several years earning the trust of his manager and pitching coach. When he tried out for the 5th starter last year he didn’t make a fuss when they went with Garcia. He has done nothing this year to warrant losing his spot in the rotation.

no, it's situational base

If all FIP measures is HR/BB/K, it won’t show the base clearing double that ERA does.

Uh not at all, check out everyone else's giant split

FIP is context neutral, a solo home run counts the same as a bases loaded HR.

ERA is very much not context neutral obviously as a solo home run is 1/4 as bad as a grand slam.

The guy is just bad, the balls he doesn’t boot are the ones he doesn’t get to. His hands might as well belong to a first gen android for as well as they work. and that nice wet noodle arm that makes me want Eck back. Eck just looked like he was playing HiLi but at least he had an idea of what he was doing with it. Theriot shouldn’t even be over there. His footwork would make Fred Astaire cry. Idea

Okay time to get lambasted but it’s on my mind so I’m getting it off of there. What would it take to get Yunel Escobar? Put him at short, slide Theriot to 2nd. Schumacher is super utility. Send Dirty Dan down when Punto gets back. (Or DFA Punto for all I care.) Then address the bullpen with a not quite Heath Bell but not quite Miguel Bautista arm. (I liked the Scott Kazmir reference earlier.)

I don't know. If they actually did guarantee to him he'd play short when they made the trade,

it wouldn’t look good to future FA’s if they forced him to move to 2nd.

On the other hand, if an uninvolved party made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, well, the Cardinals would have to agree with Theriot’s request to move out of fearing for his safety.

You know what to do.

Not really disputing them

Theriot has a place on this team if he leads off and puts up a .350 OBP and plays adequate defense. To do that all he has to do is not make a shit ton of errors. I understand that there will be a few plays he can’t get to, I under stand that there may be a few infield singles because of his arm.

But he can’t make errors like he has. I don’t believe moving him to second is going to fix the number of errors he has either.

At this point it looks like he is playing either because “We said he is the starting short stop, so he is the starting short stop damnit.” Or, we don’t have anyone else who we believe can lead off, and we told him we were just going to have him play short, plus it’s not like he isn’t going to make a shit ton of errors at second if we put him there."

Advanced defensive stats paint Theriot as an above-average shortstop the past three seasons. Cardinals coach Jose Oquendo likened him over the Winter Warm-Up weekend to David Eckstein when he joined the Cardinals.

Theriot welcomes a familiar view of the field.

“It’s weird. Just being on that side of the infield makes you a little more comfortable,” Theriot said. “I guess that’s because I’ve played there since I was a little kid. When I was in Chicago and I was moved from short to second … I don’t think it really (was) justified. I didn’t think that I didn’t perform well enough at short anymore. I didn’t feel like that was the case at all. I can still play short.”

Honestly his OBP keeps going slowly downhill

and at this point I’d rather have the defense. Don’t move him to 2nd. play Craig at 2nd. Play your best defender at short. Maybe have Freese lead off when he gets back.

by sdrone on Jun 15, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

His OBP has been between .340 and .355 for pretty much the whole season.

It’s at .347 right now.
So, not slowly going downhill.
Only 7 shortstops in MLB have a better OBP than Theriot & only 5 2b’s have a better OBP.
He’s a useful MIF with the bat.

As far as rather having the defense, I agree EXCEPT for the fact Skip is out there. Skip needs to be replaced first, and I’d like to put some defense there (though Craig is intriguing).

He definitely sucks. But last night was all Ryan Theriot. His four misplays (two of which were called errors) caused Garcia to throw at least 25 more pitches and led to his early exit. If Garcia goes one more inning, we never see Batista at all.

Oh, and Theriot got on base four times, scoring twice.

I would have rather seen Franklin last night

Recently, at least in his first inning of work, he’s seemed to do OK.

In the P-D this morning, TLR was reported to have said one reason he brought in Batista was that the fans were more tolerant of him than Franklin. What a brilliant reason for an in-game decision!

yea

right now, I trust Franklin for one of the last four innings to hold on to a 6-2 lead much more than I would Batista. If he (Franklin) has to throw a second inning, I’m scared, but he’s done fairly good the first inning out his last few appearances.

I’d go with Franklin just because he actually still has an idea of where his pitches are going at times, even if they are woefully hittable at times.

by bailorg on Jun 15, 2011 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel pretty safe in saying that Garcia going another inning would've been much better than what we saw

Theriot got on base four times. He also booted four plays. That is why Theriot’s WAR stands at ZERO after 68 games. Just for fun, you know what Brendan Ryan’s WAR is? It’s 1.1.

I’m not giving anyone else a pass. In fact, the second most-responsible person for this loss (in my mind) is Trever F. Miller, who has never retired any batter he has been asked to face this year. That first-pitch HBP to load the bases was typical Miller, and his subsequent wild pitch was the cherry on top. TLR should’ve pulled Miller right after the HBP, but he didn’t (of course), so that’s on him.

Then comes Batista. Look, some of his stats haven’t been bad, but, as many here have been predicting, his luck was going to run out. I can’t blame TLR for going to the guy, nor leaving him in after the walk and the hits. Based on his season-long string of luck, TLR believed that Batista would wriggle out of it. He didn’t.

Still, the main culprit here is Theriot. It is beyond bewildering that TLR runs Theriot out there every day with performances like that which tax the starters and cause the bullpen to shoulder too much burden.

www.stlcardinalbaseball.com

by Ray DeRousse on Jun 15, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

A few things:

-Brendan Ryan’s WAR is no more pertinent to our discussion than Curt Schilling’s.
-Theriot’s Fangraphs WAR, the one more commonly used here, stands at 0.7
-You don’t blame TLR for leaving in Batista that long? I sure as hell do. I like TLR, but this one was an obvious mistake in my eyes.
-That’s not how WAR works.
-What’s the other option right now? You know who really does have a 0 WAR? Tyler Greene.

Agreed

it appears there is, after last night, only one man who can be convinced that Ryan Theriot is a major league shortstop. Unfortunately, he’s managing the Cardinals.

This situation is just about forgiveable at the moment, but once Punto is back, I really think we need to either move Theriot to 2B or leave him on the bench. You just can’t let a guy make errors on routine groundballs, as he seems to do, every couple of days. You just can’t.

Random question about odd pinging noise in replays

Often when I watch a condensed game or a replay on the web, I hear a common noise that I don’t hear on TV broadcasts.

Right after the player smacks the ball and starts running, there’s kind of a pinging noise that sounds almost like an aluminum bat being tossed against a wall or some odd thing like that. Anyone know what I’m talking about? Any idea what that is? It’s VERY common on web replays.

I can’t think that the wooden bat hitting the ground makes much of a noise. I’ve never been able to figure out what it is.

For instance, look at the first Theriot screwup that D-dee posted . At 8:18 in the condensed game. The batter hits, starts to run, drops the bat, the camera changes, and there’s that odd noise.

Craig Calcaterra

gives this insightful summary of the Nats’ rally last night:

St. Louis had a 6-1 lead after five innings and blew it, primarily on the power of Miguel Bautista imploding for five runs in two-thirds of the six-run seventh inning. Only one of the Nats’ runs came on an extra base hit. The rest were singles, fielder’s choices, wild pitches, and other small stuff.

the sins of Theriot, Miller, Batista, Tony have been well covered

but there were other little baubles and bangles last night:
Jay taking a called third strike (Pujols did too)
Yadi’s half-ass effort on Miller’s wild pitch. I’m getting the strong impression that Yadi does not like catching Batista or Miller, because their control is awful; and I can’t blame his feeling, but I CAN blame him for going into the swipe at it mode instead of a block the ball mode.
He seems fundamentally better when he catches Salas or Sanchez, for example, but seems to get petulant receiving B and M, and possibly Franklin too.
It was scored a wild pitch, correctly and all, and the Yadi not bailing Miller out is way down on the list of blame for last night, but when Miller looked really pissed finishing the intentional walk, with two 90 mph throwaways, I wondered if he was mad at himself, or? just sayin.

we had a similar conversation about Auston Wilson this time last year

but seriously, who in their right mind would go to college rather than take a shit-ton of money to play sports?

Josh Bell apparently

ESPN’s Keith Law tweets that he’s told there is no dollar figure that would change Josh Bell’s mind about going to college. Bell, drafted 61st overall by the Pirates, was one of the top draft talents but has made it clear he will honor his commitment to the University of Texas. Of course, he also hired Scott Boras as his advisor, so clearly the Pirates think there’s a chance he can be signed.

This had to be discussed yesterday.

but Al had one of my favorite quotes of all time yesterday….

“Yeah, the ground rule double takes the RBI away from Colby, but he has to think of the team. This could lead to a bigger RBI day for Albert…”

Mike Shannon: "That strikeout was brought to you by...by...well, I don't know what it was brought to you by!"

John Rooney: "It wasn't brought to you by anything Mike."

With the long and distinguished history of the Cardinals

it’s kind of shocking, and embarrassing that the best this franchise can do for announcers is Al and Mike Shannon. Dan McLaughlin is meh, and Rick Horton is stuck in 1987.

Penance for Jack Buck, perhaps.

but i really like the differences in the league (AL=DH/NL=no DH) and wish that there was some other way to resolve the issue of leauge imbalance. Why not just get rid of the divisions and also inter-league play and let the top 4 teams in each league at the end of the year duke it out for the world series? Seed the playoff teams based on record and let home field advantage be based off of the final 2 teams regular season record?

get rid of it and then (because union will object mightily) add 1 or two players to roster. Bad fielding hitters will always have jobs (back in the day they called them left fielders) and good hitters will still be paid well.
