How is Lance Lynn?

So now that its pretty certain we'll be losing K-Mac to the DL for atleast 2-3 starts, I was wondering if anyone can fill me in on Lance Lynn, or whoever would be the new 5th starter.

Also, there have been more and more rumors that we would be in the runnings to make a trade for Jose Reyes or Heath Bell and I'm wondering, A) what would it take to get either of those two, and B) I can agree for the need for Reyes as he is one of the top SS's in the majors when healthy, but do we need Bell with Salas performing and the optimism of Franklin changing things around/the development of Sanchez and Motte?

I think Bell can definitely add value in the next several seasons but I mean he is 33, and realistically would probably be at this level for another 2-3 seasons Tops.  Reyes on the other hand, is going to cost a boat load, and don't get me wrong, its been a long time since we had a solid lead off man and a great shortstop (i'm thinking renteria) but Theriot is doing well especially for what he's cost us.  He could cut down on the errors but he hasn't played shortstop full time in a while and I think he's definitely an upgrade over Ryan.  I mean he's batting about 13 percentage points higher than Theriot, has better defense and more speed, but if we sign him I don't think we can realistically keep Albert and bring back Berk for another year or 2.

Just want to know your thoughts on these issues and can we please get Zack Cox in the majors already!

Lynn is the epitome of a 4th starter

inconsistent with occasionally high strikeout totals, occasionally high walk totals. Can get grounballs, but can also give up to many flyballs. If his command/control is own, he has good enough stuff to get ML hitters out. He would be in the ML rotation right now for lesser team. At the end of last season in AAA, he found a 4 seam fastball and started striking out a ton of people. Has kept that rate up this year, but would definitely be a serviceable big league starter and should be able to hold his own if he gets the call (which I am hoping for).

Just say no to Bell, Just say no to Reyes (unless we keep c-mart, shelby, craig, and Cox out of the deal)

I'm not really a big Lynn believer

I mean, I probably have him our 6th or 7th best prospect or something but I don’t think he’s going to be a league-average major league pitcher, which I think a lot of folks saw as his upside. He walks a few too many in AAA given his slightly fringey stuff and, although his fastball looks like a major league pitch, I don’t think he’s going to be much better than McClellan going forward. Still, I’ll be excited to see him and hope he gets the chance over guys like Brandon Dickson and PJ Walters who really don’t have a big league future with us.

Agree about Bell and Reyes. I could see a Reyes deal not being a terrible idea given how strong our team looks this year, but ultimately I think he probably costs too much. If we can get it done without Martinez or Miller I’d consider it, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen.

Still bitching to contact.

its the lack of consistency that gets me with lynn

i do think he will be league average though…just not much more than that

Ryan's really popular on this site and Theriot is not

I don’t think there’s a massive amount of difference between them personally, Ryan’s probably a bit better when you take his massively superior defence into account.

But dissing the Boog won’t win you too many friends on VEB :-)

I got ya, but we havent had a leadoff man bat 300 in years n now its really helping the lineup, i think we realized in this day and age its better to have berk n theriot then boog and luddy, boog was hitting so poorly at times that he n skip were almost automatic outs

by tonyy on Jun 5, 2011 9:39 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

that's the problem

one of skip or boog needed to go, but they picked the wrong guy

Between those two i agree but maybe skips versatility in being able to play the outfield helped him? Or maybe the fact that he once hit 300? Or maybe they cudnt get crap for skip, im not sure but i agree skip needs to go next offseason, i like theriot and love him after today, i like descalso, and hoping cox can keep developing he an kick tyler greene off thos roster bc he is awful

skip will not (or should not) play the outfield again

fwiw skip is not hitting as well as boog this season, and obviously is not a good defender while ryan is ++

there is no support for skip coming from me...

i’m just trying to think of why he was traded and skip wasn’t. Im sure other team weren’t lining up for skip’s services. I can’t wait for Freese to get back and then Descalso can play second and skip can go back to the bench.

P.S. he played the outfield for a portion of last nights game

he's a defensive liability, is worse offensively, and has less speed .:. definitely without a doubt an upgrade

I mean who wouldn want reyes, but are we willing to give up what it takes to get h along with all the money he’ll demand, also we cud b put in a spot that we might not b able to sign h n this traded for a rental

Lynn will be. . .

a flyball pitcher at the ML level, even if he keeps the ball down in the zone because his fastball, while fast, doesn’t move at all and is therefore easy for batters to center. He does have the speed to take guys up the ladder and succeed. His breaking pitch was too slurvy for my tastes in his first start. His changeup had OK downward movement, but was only about a 10mph difference from his fastball, is FSM’s radar readings during his first start are to be believed.

Unless he has some growth potential left, I’d say his ceiling is a 4/5 starter who will have OK numbers at home because Busch is such a pitchers’ park. I would not want him starting on Planet Coors or in the juicebox, however.

I think i'm correct in saying

10mph is around about the ideal difference between a FB and changeup, statistically speaking.

I have always been under the impression. . .

that at the big-league level anything less than 15mph was not enough difference. I have no sourcing for that impression – - i can’t even blame Dan ’n Al.
