St. Louis Cardinals 5 vs. Florida Marlins 6: Kyle Lohse as himself
Eventually Kyle Lohse was going to struggle. The walks were going to go up, he was going to get burned on those disappointing plays that only seem to matter when the game feels like a loss—giving up a hit to a pitcher that turns into one run of a grand slam—and he wasn't going to be so incredibly fine as he was with his fastball and slider in the beginning of the year.
Of course, his ERA is still 2.44, so it's possible to avoid fatalism at this juncture if you see it as part of a long season rather than the night Kyle Lohse turned back into Kyle Lohse for good. A double dactyl, as promised (and as suggested, I will take requests in this thread, but only if you can present the haikupon.)
Higgledy Piggledy
"Kyle, oh, Kyle, your
pitching performance—you
got your bell rung!"
"Whaddya expect?" he said,
failing to see he'd been
theft-of-identitied—
et tu, Cy Young?
I was hoping the time was done for worrying about Albert Pujols, but during the Atlanta series he was—well, he was as ugly as the rest of the series, with all its reliever collapses and strange play. Tonight he wasn't great, but he did walk twice and line out hard—this is the equivalent, I think, of the last Ryan Franklin game, where the results look like another data-point in his inevitable decline but the process wasn't consistent with his usual failings.
Mike Stanton's home run is not on HitTracker at press time but early measurements indicate it went a gajillion feet. Stanton's career ISO a month into his age-21 season is .245. As a player he is considerably scarier than the last Mike Stanton—who was a career .333 hitter, albeit with an ISO of just .042.

not worried about Lohse
this is one of the those games that are just randomly chalked up in the loss column. at least the bullpen was pretty effective eh?

unrelated note
somebody whose twitter account is apparently @danup_ gets a ton of @-replies, and about half of them go to me by mistake.
i don't think there's any reason to think lohse turned back into a pumpkin
he struggled with his command a little bit, but most of the night he was able to located just like he has all season. he also ever imploded. he just got burned on bad pitches and then bounced back
nothing to see here

yeah that sounds nice.
that was me today, but it still required studying for my final tomorrow and writing a paper. tomorrow night will be nice, but wednesday, thursday, and friday all suck. i hate finals.

I usually love finals week
but this time I have a very long paper to write that I haven’t yet been able to start.
hypothetically i should love it.
i don’t have to go to class. i don’t have to go to work. the end of the year is near. all things i should be happy about. but every year (especially second semester) i just literally have no motivation. i NEVER study enough for finals, and my gpa suffers about .2 points every semester because of it.

one year finals made the difference between passing and failing out of college for me
apparently they were the only time I could get motivated
That's called clutch.

So who is everbody's favorite prospect to follow, besides Shelby Miller?
I know Vols is head of the Trevor Rosenthal Bandwagon but Tommy Pham is probably my favorite. A toolsy outfielder who’s actually made to AA is rare enough in our system that he really intrigues me. Actually, outfielders who project to even have a chance of being more than bench players are pretty rare in the current Cards system (Taveras, Pham, probably not Jones anymore). Of course with Holliday and Rasmus there’s not a lot of room in the outfield in the medium-to-long term
Now what am I going to spread on my toast? Your tears?
my pet prospects are carlos martinez and ryan jackson right now

it was bad
my complaint with Riot is booting easy plays. In the context of our other middle infielders, I think his bat plays (preferably @ 2nd, however) as long as he’s not kicking routine grounders & popups.
Whatever happened in Cincinnati, stays in Cincinnati.
so he has no range & he's booting easy plays at a position he wants to play
i can’t imagine he’ll do any better at a position he does not want to play

When I watched on tape delay, and the ball went through the wickets,
I thought, “I woulda.”
Then I was mad I couldn’t share that with VEB live.
Then I read somebody (probably some sort of genius) say the same thing in the thread.
…Bring back Boog, and have him jump in front of at least two pitches a game. Avg=.125; Obp>.400
what i liked about Bernie today was he brought up the DD pitch to contact stuff
and what’s the point in having DD & pitch to contact if you infielders can’t field? does his offense make up for his bad D?
the irony really pisses me off, last year the team & media destroyed Boog because he couldn’t hit when it was clear his D more than made up for it. well now the reverse is true, except theriot’s O isn’t making up for his terrible D. and the team is tripping over themselves to defend the guy & so far the media isn’t really saying much, except Bernie today. just goes to show TLR & his type can’t be gone soon enough
Balls
no one in the media has the guts to stand up to the team, they are all scared of them
i’d give just about anything for a press pass for one night just so i could bring them down. of course i’d need most of VEB talking to me & feeding me the numbers to prove my point through an ear piece so i’m not simply yelling they all suck balls
Balls
honestly
Boog was more fun, but I think the fact that Theriot’s bat is sort of league-average-ish is better for the team. Ryan hit worse than Miles did last year. It’s not really clear, to me anyway, that Ryan’s D was worth watching an auto-out in the lineup. He was like an extra pitcher, almost.
The point about having the P2C pitching philosophy and taking steps backwards on defense is a good one though….
Whatever happened in Cincinnati, stays in Cincinnati.
what almost no one mentions with Boog was he wasn't the automatic out in the line up
but he gets all the blame for it outside of VEB. it’s very true, he was a terrible hitter last year & it sadly looks like he still is. a guy like him to the Cards pitching staff is invaluable which is why i think his autooutitis was OK. he’s Ozzie Freaking Smith with the glove for goodness sake.
i’ll never understand why Yadda, Skip, 3rd base & the pitcher get a pass on their autooutitis from last year & Boog doesn’t.
Balls
you have it backwards
Boog’s D did not “more than make up” for his putrid offense. That’s why his performance lst year was somewhere between below league average and replacement level.
In contrast, Theriot’s offense has more than made up for his putrid defense so far this year.

if he keeps this up till after the all star break, i wouldn't mind a 1-2yr extension
i saw the reply of the HR he hit tonight & it looked awesome

guayzimi was asking about this in the GT
if the guy OPSes 1.200 for the entire year, he’s going to be competing w/ Pujols for $$$. More likely is that he comes in .900-.950 and looks for a decent FA contract ($22M/2yr?). I dunno. He could also reinjure his knee tomorrow, for all we know.
Right now I think it’s probably just too damn early. But I will say that I love having that motherfucker on our team when he kicked our ass for so many years and I’d love to see him wear the Birds on the Bat til he retires….
Whatever happened in Cincinnati, stays in Cincinnati.
yeah it's weird liking him now, i couldn't stand him for the last decade

I don't think there's any way Berk finishes the season like this
just hitting his career average would be plenty. A feather in Mozeliak’s cap, for sure….

no, probably not, if he stays healthy he'll probably get back to have career average
which will of course be good enough

It's rough dealing with two free-agent 1Bmen in the same offseason
If we dare imagine a world without AP, having LB around is a nice backup. But Lance could get an offer he can’t refuse before we get any answers on the Albert question. So the time to add year(s) would seem to be mid-season.
which is why i asked, you can use him to show Albert hey, you might not be all that missed big boy
at least right away. and it’s not like Albert is doing anything much at the plate right now. he’s got OK HR&RBI numbers but everything else is way, way down. and by all accounts he looks terrible at the plate. i’m telling you, somethings up with him. either he’s trying to hard to prove he’s really worth $30+ per year or he’s just throwing in the towel or his mechanics are so screwed up even his wife can’t fix them. having not seen him at all i can’t be sure, but something’s up. something is definitely up & wrong.
Balls
I don't know
that playing the “you won’t be missed” card is the way to go with Albert.

Albert scares me every year like this and eventually becomes Albert again.
But it scares me every time. I’m afraid that if I let down and not worry about it it will turn out badly.
