Schumaker over Craig really Tony??

NO big suprise here, Tony once again benches a much better player with way more upside like Craig in favor of everyone's favorite fringe major leaguer Schumaker.  With all the younger, less expensive, and way more capable young ball players on this team, why does Skip continue to get opportunities over others he clearly does not deserve?  I know he's a great guy and we all like his hustle but he is at best a fringe major league ball player who should not be stealing at bat's and time from much better players with way more upside like Craig.  Shumaker can't hit, can't field, doesn't steal bases, I mean I know he's Tony's pet but c'mon.  There is no reason Craig should be sitting the bench in favor of Schumaker, no reason whatsoever.  I hate when Don Tony get's his little pet's that he favors at the expense of guys who are more talented and bring more to the team.  I like Skip as a person, but he has no business starting over Craig or Descalso on a nightly basis,  hell he shouldn't even start over Punto!  Here we go again, thanks for putting best guys on the field Tony...

Skip is gritty

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

As much as I love Craig

I think we definitely need to give Skip playing time. For one, he definitely has a defensive advantage over Craig the Outfielder. Plus, while we have Skip, we may as well use him. It is also a very good idea to get Skip back in shape for when another one of our boys breaks his hand on a hit by pitch.
You also can’t hate a man who got our ninth inning rally started with an excellent double.
I don’t think that Skip is really that much better, and I strongly agree with getting Craig at bats, as he has definitely proven himself worthy of those plate appearances this year, I just don’t think that a Craig-Schumaker Platoon is that terrible of an idea. At the very least it will keep Green off the field, which is a plus for everyone. Furthermore, with all the “younger, less expensive, and way more capable young ball players on this team,” we may be looking to trade Schumaker. You can’t trade a guy without showing him off a little first. I personally think that Skip would look great in a Rasmus-Schumaker-Green package trade for a Mr. Mark Buerhle.
Finally, and no one can deny this, we need Schumaker’s great stubble to complete the 3-4-5 o’clock shadow combo. Between him, Descalso, and Pujols, we have one of the grittiest looking infields in the league.

Way to ruin a good thing Theriot.

Rasmus, Schu and Greene for Buerhle!?!?

Thats possibly the worst trade proposal I’ve ever seen. Maybe Schu and Greene for Buerhle.

That Craig and Jay were supposed to be part of that deal too. Descalso too if the White Sox will take him. Also trade them the entire Quad City River Bandits franchise. And Fred Bird. And alter history giving them two more World Series victories.

I'm glad someone posted complaining about this

Defensively i’m not going to attempt to pull up a bunch of data on their respective fielding of the second base position….but i think we can safely say neither is gonna win a gold glove there.

Offensively there is no question who is currently the better player or who has the most upside down the road. If Craig can make even the simplest plays defensively, his bat could make him Uggla light out of the second base spot. He and Rasmus can platoon in Tony’s #2 spot in the order (some pop and good OBP).

Nice to have his bat in there every night. If he keeps hitting in spotty duty this is gonna turn into Ludwick from a few years back when he was mashing and sitting every other game.

Agreed

Skip is doing all he’s gonna do at the big league level, I’ve enjoyed him as a cardinal but Craig has so much upside at the plate and their defense is equally weak so. I just don’t see what role Skip plays on this team anymore, he’s a serious defensive liability and he doesn’t hit all that well either..

by ghostofjimlindeman on May 24, 2011 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Craig can be hit with the Uggla stick.

Uggla’s career wOBA is .353, career wRC+ is 114. I’m pretty sure Craig can manage to hit as well as that. I think Uggla is superior as a defender, of course, but Craig’s got a .341 wOBA, 114 (identical) wRC+ (which is park and league adjusted, I believe, as a measure of runs created with 100 being average).

Uggla’s probably a -5 defender (and probably getting worse) but Craig is, I guess, -10 at best at 2B, so Dan’s still the better player, but I don’t think there’s as much in it as you might imagine.

Still bitching to contact.

THE CARDINALS NEED TO MAKE TICKET PRICES LOWER, LIKE $5. IT WOULD TREAT FANS RIGHT. I’M A SEASON TICKET HOLDER AND CAN NO LONGER AFFORD MY MORTGAGE THANKS TO THE COST OF BASEBALL GAMES.

DO THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS OWN THE LOUISVILLE CARDINALS? THESE ARE QUESTIONS WE SHOULD BE ASKING.

MAKE ME THE GM ALREADY, FREDBIRD. I HAVE GREAT IDEAS.

Schumaker

is on the team so you have to play him, at least now and then, but I think he’s outgrown any real usefulness. He’s the new Aaron Miles.
But let’s talk about Greene for a minute.
A week or so ago I said I wanted to get him in the line up (at SS) and asked what keeps him on the bench? Well, I got half of my wish and now I wonder if there really is any merit in hanging on to him. He may be the worst guy we have at 2nd base. He can run and throw and sometimes hit but he doesn’t excite me much.
What I have the hardest time understanding is Theriot at SS. If there is a place at all for Greene it’s at SS. Theriot he just doesn’t have the arm for it…or the range.
I find it really strange that Tony wanted Ozzie to move over to 2nd and put Clayton at SS because Clayton had a better arm and now he wants the weakest arm at SS. Am I missing something?
Back to Schumaker….He was best in the outfield but we don’t need him in the outfield. Before he went down he was hitting a little better than last year but that’s not saying much. And at what point did that experiment at 2nd quit being an experiment and become permanent? It should be Punto’s job to lose and Schumaker should be sending out resumes.
This could be a much better team if it had a better middle infield. Theriot has been doing a good job as a leadoff hitter but that’s it. Where does he belong on the field? Without Punto we have 2 weak links in the infield and with Punto at 2nd we have a weak link at SS….the worst place to have the weakest link.
As it looks right now, I’d trade Schumaker to get Boog back. I could find a use for him easier than I could for Skip.

This is probably not going to happen...

but towards the end of last season, Skip was considered a fringe Type B Free Agent according to Elias. I know his good offensive 2009 will no longer count into those rankings, so he would have to build some value this year in order to make it as a Type B. Would the Cards offer arbitration (I sure hope not) to Skip if he makes it as a Type B? I would assume that with his performance/playing time, he would accept to get the arb increase to his salary and a ML contract, but then again, maybe he sees DD over his shoulder and thinks he needs to head elsewhere to actually get playing time.

Would give up a draft pick to sign Skip Schumaker? Oh wait the Astros. Go Skippy go.

Shumaker won't be a FA at year's end

he’ll be third year arby. So, no comp picks. Whether the Cards extend him an offer, go to arby, or non-tender (probably my choice) is the question.
