quick recap - game 49 - cards 3, padres 1

and therea quick recap as the game thread approaches 1600 comments. colby snatched a homer in impressive fashion. pujols smashed a homer in a long-forgotten fashion. loshe continued to be both good and lucky, working around 3 doubles to allow just one run. he appeared in the 8th, running his pitch count to 118. in the top of the ninth, the cards closed out a tie game (1-1) with 2 runs on a skippy double, a descalso single, a flyball, and a theriot single. the padres could not answer in the bottom of the ninth against salas, the amazing non-closing wunderkind who was not sent back to memphis today.

in closing, dustin moseley would like to say a few words about the pitcher win stat. dustin?

moseley: (crouching on floor of home clubhouse, weeps, sniffing loudly. looks up.) do . . . do you guys know anybody who wants to trade for a starting pitcher?

and there you have it, folks! cards win, 3-1.

I'd take him for a nothing prospect if it's basically a salary dump.

But we probably don’t need him with Lynn in the wing and now presumably Boggs our seventh starter.

owed $2.7M for the year

He looks pretty average. I think I’d pass. His stats page makes me suspect he could benefit from Duncan’s trademark pixie dust.

by nota bene on May 24, 2011 3:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Meh,,. he's a flyball pitcher so the duncan effect probably won't be as effective.

He gets by pitching up and in which doesn’t really work with a GB pitcher.None of his secondary offerings are above average so he relies a lot on his fastball which doesn’t have much sink on it.
He’d probably be a 3.6-3.9 FIP starter in the NL.
I’d take him, but i wouldn’t expect much of a difference in performance other than the expected AL to NL help.

havent the gobs

had enough cardinal blood?!
but in all seriousness, i would rather we fix a weakness in this team than reinforce a strength

by BVHeck on May 24, 2011 4:49 AM EDT up reply actions

i'm having trouble thinking of actual weaknesses

Our MI is probably it, but we’ve pretty much learned last year that it’s really hard to upgrade there without giving up primo talent, which I’m not a fan of doing.

third base would be nice, but the list of names that make the upgrade worthy of additional salary is really small and would cost a lot of talent.
Michael Young for instance is a 3 WAR player probably based on regression, so he’s at best a 2 wins or about 9 million dollars worth of salary.Young is would be prorated for about 100 games in salary (roughly 10M in cost, we probably even out here in terms of returns)
BUT WAIT
Our current players at third probably will be able to put up 1 WAR, so for 10M were losing a potential 6M or so in value.
Though in a more realistic world, the Rangers would eat salary , but i really find that hard to believe that they would eat enough to equal out the amount of talent they would get in return.

i was thinking MI and bullpen

fwiw.
i don’t like the idea of shopping for a replacement for freese, since i’d bet he can put up 3 WAR if he could just stay healthy. those injuries he gets are freak injuries, and i don’t think the ankle will be recurring, so it’s not like he’s a liability like other players are injury liabilities. dude just needs to drink his milk.

by BVHeck on May 24, 2011 5:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I undervalue relievers too much because i think our RP is fine.

but with MI, i’d hate to trade for a second baseman because of DD.
SS would be either reyes(DD probably would work with the mets in a deal) and drew who both sound really expensive to get/keep.

IMO we just wait for marco scutaro to get off the DL and offer to pay his salary and give up a RP arm in the minors.

If we make the post season with his stats looking anything like they do now, i'm just curious how much

we can invest, and how much he’ll get.
I’d still be in favor of a joe mauer/teixera deal, but anymore years, or AAV would make me hesitant.

and if they don't plan to pursue him any further, i don't see what it could hurt to at least put him

on the trade market.
We could still get A BIG HAUL, for him.
A reliever/MI/ and lower level guy(big ceiling) are all possible in a deal if we did that.

in praise of Danny D

I know my crush is partly irrational, but I credit ‘my boy’ for more or less quelling a potential problem (Freese hurt again, oh no). Of course he got that chance because offense has been in unusual good supply lately (Matt, Puma, Pu, Colby; even Yadi and – it pains me to say it – Theriot) but Descalso has not stunk (see the 2010 debacle) and I absolutely LOVE his rifle arm.
