Game 48: St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals, May 22, 2011 1:10 PM CDT
St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals, May 22, 2011 2:10 PM EDT
I appreciate the fact that SBN doesn't have a picture for O'Sullivan given that I, also, have no memory of ever hearing this guys name. He split time last year between the Angels and the Royals but, part of the reason you probably don't know who he is is that he's not very good. Low strikeout rate and a moderate walk rate, he's a fill in righthander for a team with no one better to start. Just the kind of player that the Cardinals can route . . . or get frustratingly shut down by.
The Cardinals rotation continue to be an odd one for me. I have a hard time feeling secure with anyone not named Jaime Garcia on the mound but Chris Carpenter has been good and the no strikeout triplets of Kyle Lohse, Jake Westbrook and Kyle McClellan continue to beat my expectations on the back end of the rotation. It's an odd feeling though.
| K/9 | BB/9 | GB% | ERA | FIP | |
| Jaime Garcia | 7.91 | 1.94 | 52.4 | 1.64 | 2.28 |
| Kyle Lohse | 4.88 | 1.76 | 45.5 | 2.17 | 3.05 |
| Chris Carpenter | 6.75 | 2.44 | 46.2 | 4.88 | 3.82 |
| Jake Westbrook | 4.50 | 4.33 | 60.7 | 5.17 | 4.13 |
| Kyle McClellan | 4.53 | 2.61 | 50.0 | 3.48 | 4.15 |
How players like Lohse, Westbrook and McClellan are functionally better than a guy like Sean O'Sullivan is hard for me to pick out right now. Lohse is managing his FIP mainly due to a very impressive walk rate and some HR luck. I understand that Westbrook can be successful with a 60% groundball rate. And McClellan . . . well I just don't like looking at his stat line too closely.
The rotation makes me unaccountably nervous unless Chris Carpenter returns to a more dominant form. When the team is in first place and Jake Westbrook has just turned in a 8 inning shutout effort, it may be a bit disingenuous to pout about our rotation but here I am; nervous as hell.
The team will continue to rely on it's MLB leading offense to win games. I think, in part, that's what has made this such a fun team so far this year. It's hard not to enjoy Matt Holliday blasting a mammoth two-run HR into the stands to take the league in a pitcher's duel. It's hard not to be continually amazed by Berkman's resurgence offensively. Young players like Colby Rasmus, Jon Jay and Allen Craig contributing offensively to the team. And Albert Pujols . . . well I just don't like looking at anything he's doing too closely. (If you squint into the sun when you watch Albert play, your eyes will hurt enough that you'll forget how mediocre he's been.)
As much fun on a visceral level this team has been, it remains one that I feel strangely uneasy about. Perhaps it's my naturally cautious personality; I don't want to over-invest emotionally in a team that will let me down. Perhaps it's the scars of the early blown saves or the fact that Albert still doesn't look like Albert. The reason this team is in first place, unlike previous years, feels more like a team effort than Albert Pujols and the 7 dwarf position players. It's a collective effort as multiple players pick the team up on any given day. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing for the team but it's one I'm unaccustomed to in recent memory.
* * *
Much to my chagrin, I believe I have effectively lost a bet again (unless league offense sky rockets in the next few weeks) as Nick Punto has accumulated .9 WAR before landing on the DL. I set the bar at .5 WAR by game 80 and Punto seems well equipped to beat that. They will each receive two week ownership of my signature. Start your plotting.
* * *
Remember at the start of the season when we were worried that the team might be distracted by constant shenanigans and questions regarding Pujols' contract? Despite a terrible year, the media has been strangely quiet about it all -- quiet enough that it feels unnatural to me. I don't have any idea why the question doesn't get asked more but what does a terrible season do for Pujols' next contract and will he be more likely to stay with the Cardinals after a bad year? That's the question that MLBTR asks and it seems like a legitimate one to me but also one I'm ill-equipped to answer.

Proud member of the Sports Injury Industrial Complex: We feel your pain and it feels good.
We can look at what is happening with the Yankees
to see the real dangers of having aging players in decline signed long-term to huge contracts: see Jeter, ARod, and Posada. While the Yankees can generate enough revenue to overcome this, the Cardinals simply can’t.
Whatever the outcome to this, it better not include Mo signing Pujols to a contract over five years…I’m not sure I’d even like four years the way things are continuing. I wonder if Albert will decline like Frank Thomas did?
it is a tantalizing, but frustrating, issue
we are now looking at about 1/3 of the season gone and apu’s performance is below his averages both offensively and defensively
at some point you have to take a look at what he is actually doing and then use his trend over the last couple years to predict the future
there are many ways to benchmark an apu contract, but i’m sure one jmo et al are looking at is holliday
is he now or next year likely to be worth 10M more than holliday?
apu signed away his most productive years and a decline over the next 5 years is almost inevitable
personally, i think the 8 yr 22m/yr that appears to be what he was offered is more than fair. not fair looking back perhaps, but fair looking forward
apu is not now nor likely to be the ‘best player’ in the league next year
apu will likely post lower offensive production this year than last
a troubling trend that will cost him $$$ no matter where he goes
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going
...to DFA TLR
This is an excellent analysis
We could be looking at Pujols’ first season without 30 homers and 100 RBI’s, which would put DeWitt and Mozeliak in a perfect position. Funny how so many people have been applauding their foresight in the Pujols negotiations lately.

So world didn't end last night
But since it was supposed to end at 6 and that’s when our store closed yesterday I got to spend yesterday telling customers who asked how long we were open “until the immanent rapture” without getting dirty looks. And today is my first game on my new baseball team in tower grove. Jaime winning so we win the series against the royals instead of losing it and I’d say this weekend is officially pretty awesome

Even worse.
I really don’t get TLR’s love of Craig. People have been talking for two years about how he’s a great hitter – have we yet seen any proof of this greatness??
www.stlcardinalbaseball.com
by Ray DeRousse on May 22, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions
And Colby has a .817
What’s your point?
I think it’s been pretty clear that Rasmus has been a far more effective #2 hitter than a #5/6 hitter in his career. Why not put him in the position that has worked thus far this year?
www.stlcardinalbaseball.com
by Ray DeRousse on May 22, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
My point is your question was what "proof" have we seen of Craig's hitting ability and an .824 is pretty good
I just don’t see what reason you have to complain. In limited ABs, Craig has been plenty good. And I don’t recall anyone saying that he is or will be “a great hitter.” Just that he is much better than Stavinoha and others of his ilk.
Why not put him in the position that has worked thus far this year?
Because it doesn’t really matter? But granted, I take your point – Rasmus is a better hitter than Craig vs RHP so should be hitting 2nd. In fact, if anything, I prefer Berkman at 2.

by Felonius_Monk on May 22, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions
TLR 'liking' Craig doesn't really fit the narrative of
Tony loves vets and hates rookies. Besides Craig’s batting .299/.377/.448. Not exactly bad.
Has your mother sold her mangle?
I completely agree that Craig is doing well enough to play
But Colby had a better line than that prior to his injury. Also, Rasmus did most of that early damage batting second. His worst games of the season (at the plate) have been when he’s batted fifth or sixth. Why not put him where he does the most damage?

nice to see Berkman back
somewhat worrying to see Craig getting extended time at 2B, though…
I know Greene has sucked lately but with Berkman back, and a righty on the mound, I’m not convinced we really need Craig’s bat in the lineup that badly.

Another concern
don’t look now, but Colby Rasmus looks to have really regressed this year in some respects. Don’t know where his power has evaporated to (and I know it’s a smallish sample so far) but especially lately, he hasn’t looked great, and his hitting line has only been decent because he’s running a .350+ BABIP.
All that said, the K/BB ratio has been better this year, so maybe the power will come around.
.151 ISO this year, to .222 in 2010 if anyone’s interested.
Still bitching to contact.
Power is down all over the league
As long as He keeps getting on base ~.360, I’m good. BABIP is comparable to
Last year. LD% slightly down. In fact his GB% is up, and pop up % is way up. I think that will all normalize soon, and power will pick up

The Designated Hitter rule:
A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be included in the lineup cards presented to the Umpire-in-Chief.
The Designated Hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing club changes pitchers. It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.
Pinch hitters for a Designated Hitter may be used. Any substitute hitter for a Designated Hitter himself becomes a Designated Hitter. A replaced Designated Hitter shall not re-enter the game in any capacity. The Designated Hitter may be used defensively, continuing to bat in the same position in the batting order, but the pitcher must then bat in the place of the substituted defensive player, unless more than one substitution is made, and the manager then must designate their spots in the batting order.
A runner may be substituted for the Designated Hitter and the runner assumes the role of the Designated Hitter.
A Designated Hitter is “locked” into the batting order. No multiple substitutions may be made that will alter the batting rotation of the Designated Hitter.
Once the game pitcher is switched from the mound to a defensive position this move shall terminate the DH role for the remainder of the game. Once a pinch-hitter bats for any player in the batting order and then enters the game to pitch, this move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for the remainder of the game.
Once a Designated Hitter assumes a defensive position this move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for the remainder of the game.

2011: Boog would've count 37
royals announcers talking about how good the cards rotation is
unfortunately the pen is as bad as the rotation has been good.
that's just one of the weird things about this team this year
the offense pretty much has pulled a 180 from last year, the rotation despite being down waino has been great, the bullpen (specifically boggs, miller, motte, franklin) has been pretty bad.
Motte - 2.39 FIP, Boggs - 3.06 FIP
So, no, they have not been “pretty bad.”

Why the pinch runner?
Craig didn’t blow a tire running to first, did he? Please tell me he didn’t.

I suspect tony wants to see more of tyler in the OF.
A 5 (now 6) run lead is a good occasion for experimentation.

6-1 lead...
he shouldn’t be playing 2nd. Personally I would’ve subbed out Berkman.
Sign Carlos Silva!!!
he appears as competent as skip
and it looks like tony is going to continue to use him there, so a 6-1 lead seems like a good time for him to see game time there

Yeah...
or he could learn to play the position this winter in the Dominican league.

Craig looks good at 2B and second in the batting order.
Can’t wait til Freese returns in July.

I don't think Jaime is going to make it today, though.
Pitch count argues against it. So does the tactical situation. I’d try to get him through 5 and then give Batista some work.

Would almost have been tempting to have K-Mac pinch run there
and then stay in to DH.
That saves Laird for emergency use, plus what a boost to Kyle’s ego (if also a blow to Laird’s).
