VEB's Guide to the Lou: Feed Me!

Alright -- Let's start this off. I need restaurant suggestions.  Be sure to include the type of food, why it's good and a general location (downtown, soulard, dogtown, etc).  I expect to search for websites and what not as part of the final compilation.

If someone says they think Hodak's is great and you think it sucks, feel free to chime in. I'm not so fat nor wealthy that I've been to all these places and crowd sourcing requires that a lot of you answer. We generally get into 100 comment sub threads on this topic all the time so I have high expectations.

Restaurants don't necessarily need to be right next to the stadium but I don't plan on including a restaurant in St. Charles in this guide for example.

So have at it. Talk. Argue. Cry. Hug. I'll parse the thread and make it usable in the final product.

For sushi

I’m suggesting Wasabi downtown. I know there are other sushi places people like as well.

the Drunken Fish on the landing. Mostly for grownups…especially at night time. This is the only bar with better than bar fare on the landing.

I’ve been there for a few birthday things…but the sushi was fresh. It can really change between afternoon and evening. As does the landing….but I’m a college student, so when I go out with the crew it’s typically somewhere Landing-ish. I can’t wait till the bar section (SIX ROW!!!!11.

Second this. Wasabi is the best sushi place in town in my experience.

Seki’s on Delmar is good as well (and not as crowded). Drunken fish was decent but I’ve had awful service there.

Seki's is great

by mattybobo on May 24, 2011 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I should add here

that Seki’s isn’t there anymore. The owner sold the place to the guy who runs a different sushi place in the Loop. He is keeping the restaurant running though, and it’s called “”http://www.blueoceansushi.com/home" target="new">Blue Ocean" now.
My wife and I just ate some carry-out from there last night with my parents. We only discovered the change while my dad was trying to find a menu on the internet. Dad and I went to pick up the food and got to talk to the new owner a bit because it was very early in the night and they had almost no customers in yet. He said he’s going to keep a similar format of a more traditional restaurant rather than a hip sushi bar or something.
The food was almost as good as Seki’s with a few notable differences. For one, the rice just wasn’t as tasty. It was drier and blander. I don’t think they used as much vinegar, or something. Also, certain dinner dishes used to come with miso soup and cucumber salad, which now do not. A lot of the food was just fine, though. My sashimi was good but I don’t think there was as much of it. My Una Jyu was fine, but again the rice it was sitting on wasn’t as yummy as I remember it being at Seki’s. So, a mixed bag when compared to Seki’s, but still pretty darn good on its own.

1) Joe Boccardis- best. Sausage. Period. Also the buffalo chicken pizza is amazing and has pegacorn wings on it (prgacorns have bacon wings right?) there’s like 4. I go to the original in old town Eureka
2) rigazzi’s- not shy about the toppings and yummy. On the south corner of the hill
3) Aldo’s- have good topping that include fresh garlic and they are not shy with it, Aldo probably the tastiest crust. There’s also a separate delivery place and the resteraut and delivery place have separate delicious pizza selections. Jefferson street in Washington

Don't get to St. Louis too often but I did get down there for a Reds game last year

Memorial Day Weekend.

Anyway, we went to Soulard for dinner and ate at a place called McGurk’s. Awesome patio (although, we couldn’t get a seat on the patio) but the food and service was awful.

I ordered a steak of some sort (medium) and my fiance ordered pork. I’m not sure either one saw a flame more than about 10 seconds.

When I started eating, I knew my steak was undercooked but I just sort of went with it since that’s not the worst thing. But there was a lot of blood coming out. So, much that I was a little uncomfortable (I’m not a big fan of a lot of “juice” coming out of my steak). Then my fiance asks me if her pork is cooked. It wasn’t just a little pink, you know like a nice little pink smoke ring. No, it was beat red on the inside. She had 4 or 5 slices on her plate and they all looked the same.

At that point, I said don’t eat another bite. I finally got the waiter over and first showed him mine then hers. I told him I understood we were in late and the kitchen was nearing it’s closing time, but they still needed to cook the food they were sending out. (it looked to me as if the kitchen was in a hurry and turned the flame up so the food cooked faster…or at least the outside of the food cooked fast while the inside was still raw)

He took the food and said, “I’ll take care of it”.

5 minutes later, he came back with our bill and said, “I’ve comped everything except your drinks and appetizers (which were really good), I’m really sorry this happened” and he walked away.

He didn’t fix anything. Didn’t offer to. A manager never spoke to us. Nothing. We just looked at each other with a kind of wft look, threw down some cash for the food and left to find another place to eat that was still open on a Sunday night (which is not easy in St. Louis).

I wouldn't judge a place by one bad experience. . .

I have had a ton of very good meals at McGurk’s. Yes, the fare is bar food, but it is good bar food. Try the pork tenderloin sandwich, the rainbow trout salad, and any of the Irish soups.

On Sunday nights starting at 7pm, they have a husband and wife guitar/flute duo who plays Celtic music. Very low key, very family friendly, very cool.

by SouthsideCardsFan on May 19, 2011 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

then what's the best place in Soulard?

and is the neighborhood alive at all at night on the weekends?

and for that matter, is there a neighborhood/suburb (i guess) that has a good nightlife?

here’s the thing, I’m from southern Illinois but live in the chicago burbs and my fiance is from the burbs as well. she’s given St. Louis a couple of shots with me, but I’ve failed miserably a couple of times with the later/night type of activites around the city. chicago has the neighborhoods. what does st. louis have? are the suburbs the equivelant of chicago’s neighborhoods? that’s the way i’ve tried to spin it, but i haven’t exactly convinced myself of it yet.

where do young people live and hang out?

Niche is a block away from being in Soulard.

It’s in Benton Park, along with Sidney Street Cafe which is a fantastic restaurant.

Juniper Grille used to be very good but went downhill a few years back. Mollys (what used to be Nortons) is normally solid. And there are lots of options for bar food. But, yeah, if your looking for something at the time McGurk’s is closing on a Sunday night, you’re probably out of luck.

chicago has the neighborhoods. what does st. louis have?

Neighborhoods as well. And suburbs!

what I'm asking about

is there an area where one could walk to a couple different places in a short amount of time and see life on the streets? when I was in soulard, it was like a bar/restaurant on a corner, then a bunch of houses, then at the next corner another bar/restaurant. everything was dark and the streets were dark.

Coffee Oasis on Euclid (I think it’s still there) makes a really good gyro. The place is more middle eastern/mediterranean than Greek, which is rather obvious. It is a spinoff of Pappy’s in MIdtown. The brisket and ribs are fantastic. The only drawback is that the hours are pretty limited; they are only open until the early afternoon. However, it is a perfect stop before a Saturday day game. You can swing by, grab a bite, then catch one of the Soulard shuttles down to the game.

Nothing beats the Cherokee Street stretch, though for authentic Mexican food. The place at the old gas station (I have never known the name) is the best IMHO. And while not on Cherokee, and probably not even particularly authentic, I have heard great things about Burrito Loco (I think that’s the name) in the far south Grand area (near iron Barley).

There used to be a little burrito joint

out on Kings Highway by the Bigfoot shop that was awesome.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to imply Mokabe's brunch was just veg, although the way I wrote it sounded

that way. They pretty much always have real bacon, although I think (almost) everything else is veggie. They have awesome biscuits and gravy (with veggie sausage in the gravy), really good brioche french toast, usually some kind of awesome quiche, veggie sausage patties and fake crab cakes, and to top it all off delicious strawberry orange juice and the pastries you mentioned. I could eat brunch there every Sunday and not get tired of it.

veggie gravy?

veggie sausage?

If the world ends tomorrow, I’m blaming this.

I am with you buddy

I never eat the vegan gravy and sausage. My least favorite thing they have. The juices are good though

If anyone is out in Franklin county I advise Aldo's as previously mentioned, Bugsy for te stuffed mushrooms (everything else is just ok but the mushrooms are a godsend)

And especially Hotdog man the worlds most delicious traveling hotdog stand. He has hotdogs and Gyros and turkey brats and it’s all delicious

this doesn't necessarily make me any more qualified

but i was born & raised in st. louis and moved to the pacific northwest in my 20’s. there are a few things i miss foodwise that i feel only st. louis can provide. at least, these are the things i make a special trips for when i visit. locals, please jump in and let me know if these places are no longer open or have suffered a recent decline in quality:

pizza: blackthorn. heated topic of debate so i thought i’d get this out of the way first. i know st. louis prides itself on cracker crusts and cheese with the consistency of snot, but this one is a st. louis classic in my mind.

chicken: hodak’s. not the most original choice, but damn it’s true. so satisfying and CHEAP. dear god such value…

wings: mcgurk’s. it’s really damn hard to find good wings in the pacific northwest. st. louis has a number of great options in this department, but mcgurk’s stands out in my memory.

burgers: o’connell’s. oh sweet jesus those burgers…

breakfast: city diner. treated my wife to deep-fried french toast once and she still mentions it all the time as if it were some ambrosia we shared at the peak of mt. olympus. (honorable mention for courtesy diner. strictly a nostalgic choice, not to be recommended to others.)

vietnamese: lemongrass. seattle has a HUUUUGE selection of terrific food choices from the asiapac region. however st. louis’ vietnamese cuisine is world class in my mind. i usually find tofu intolerable, but lemongrass prepares it in such a way that i forget about meat options altogether. (honorable mention for any other vietnamese restaurant on grand).

beer: boulevard. i know, i know. it’s a kansas city brew and how dare i mention a kansas city brew in such a rich beer town. for the most part, i agree. schlafly is highly recommended and i pimp out their beer to all of my friends and acquaintances traveling to the area. heck, i even worked for A-B long enough to earn a pension they will most likely screw me out of. but i contend that you’d be hard pressed to find a more fragrant, better finishing beer in america. if you live outside of the midwest, this one’s a hard find. of course, schlafly is a fine substitute if you absolutely insist to go local.

wine: 33. jake hafner, the owner of 33 wine shop & tasting bar in lafayette square, is the friendliest, most knowledgeable, and talented sommelier i’ve ever met. he is the most likely person to direct you to the wine most in line with your personal tastes. he also loves to talk about wines and beer with his customers regardless of their level of experience. he’s a guy who loves his job and it shows in the quality of great beers and wines. it’s a great atmosphere without being the least bit intimidating. also, the menus are hilarious.

dessert: maggiemoo’s. cake batter ice cream. that is all.

ambience: dressel’s. terrific place to have a beer.

FYI, Re: 33.

Jake sold 33 a couple of years ago. All is not lost, though, as he used the prophet he made on the sale to travel Europe, learning how to brew beer from the masters and is opening his own brewery this summer in Tower Grove South called Civil Life Brewery.

I agree with your earlier assessment about Jake, though, and look forward to see what he can dow ith a micro-brew. Also, 33 is stilla nice spot, even without Jake (and his right hand man, my buddy Joe).

st. louis will miss out on one of the best retail shops for wine & beer. but i’m ecstatic to hear that the shop allowed jake to follow his dream and i’m making the new brewery one of my must-visits the next time i’m in the lou.

Everest Cafe on Manchester between Vandeventer and Kingshighway

is terrific. Great lunch buffet, especially.
It’s Himalayan food, so a bit like Indian, but less cream. Also some Korean dishes (the owners are a husband and wife from Kathmandu and Korea, respectively). Devi, the owner, is a fascinating guy. He’ll talk to you if he’s there and they’re not too busy.

One place I like a lot, more of a cafe than a restaurant, is Gelateria Leone on Grand

Pretty darn decent gelato. The best gelato outside of Italy I’ve ever had, though I haven’t had tons of gelato in the U.S. They serve various Italian coffee drinks, Italian sandwiches, appetizer type plates, etc. Cool atmosphere too.

My wife likes Gelato di Riso better. I agree that their Sorbetto is better.

That said, Gelateria Leone is also wonderful. We used to live just a short walk from there. Sigh.

We currently live a pretty short walk from there.

I’ve never even heard of Gelato di Riso. Obviously I have not gone out of my way to research St. Louis gelaterie.

I guess this is the right place to put this

But my parents are taking 8 or my friends out for dinner in STL this Thursday. Where should we go that’s simultaneously delicious and pretty reasonably priced? I’ve never had Pappy’s and it’s the leader in the clubhouse, but does anybody else feel strongly about somewhere else?

When they run out of food, they close, so keep that it mind.

Oh, man, I forgot about BOB

Hands down, that is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis. Broadway Oyster Bar, that is. Great choice for affordability and deliciousness. It’s a bit dive-y, if that’s a problem for your parents. Not overly so, but something to consider. Charlie Gitto’s downtown, which has been mentioned before, is also a solid choice, if a bit touristy.

The Over/Under on Washington Avenue has a limited menu that I would describe as upscale bar fare.

Araka in Clayton is solid, nothing spectacular.

Mosaic downtown is a good place to go once. Great lemonade. Usually a pretty good and creative special, although they tend to repeat a lot.

Copia on Washington Avenue is good, although on the pricier side for dinner.

Tap Room downtown and Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood have good food and are pretty neat places to eat.

St. Raymond's

for lunch on Wednesday is a must.

Great, Lebanese food, great people watching, as it is a most-do power lunch place for city politicos.

For the power lunch, there is also Beffa’s. just be prepared to be discriminated against on pricing unless you are over 50. Seriously, the pricing method is. . . interesting.
