VEB's Guide to the Lou
Working Title: Terms of Enrampagement
So the first thing to sort out is what type of advice gets included in a guide to St. Louis. This is something of a meta-question as I don't want to hear things like "I love Joe Buck's restaurant"* but rather "We should have a section on bars" or "We should have a section on Parking".
The obvious candidates are:
- Restaurants
- Parking/Travel
- Tourist Attractions
- Bars
So in the comments below, give me some additional ideas for categories. Tomorrow we'll start fleshing out some of the categories. My goal is to have people comment about them in the thread and then I'll compile, format and edit as necessary to create an easy to use and aesthetically appealing guide to the Lou.

Accomodations?
Because we all don’t live there.
This section may not be as useful as the others due to personal preferences, cost limitations, reward program memberships, etc., but it might help to give an idea of what’s around downtown, the airport and such — especially if there are some cool places beyond the chains.
The negative waves. Always with the negative waves...
Hotels is where input from non locals would be most handy.
Also, it was more of a sigh than a cringe, AZ.

I think an "easy to get to from the metrolink" guide should be included.

Enthusiasm
I haven’t got anything to add to this, owing to the fact that I am one of the most boring people on the planet. I rarely do anything fun – which is fine with me, of-course. But I would like to say that I am hugely enthusiatic about seeing this final product.
Visiting friends are constantly asking me “what is there to do in st. louis” – ostensibly having lived far enough away from me for long enough to have forgotten my aforementioned boringness – they assume that having lived here for 5+ years I’ll be able to offer some insight. If this gets finished I’ll finally have something other than google with which to try and produce an answer. So I strongly encourage all who would participate in this fine effort!

The question is
Do you make this a general STL guide or a baseball specific one. Since this is a Cardinal site I think it would be best to make it directed around going to the baseball game.
It will be baseball oriented but not baseball specific
when people come to town for a baseball game, they also may visit the Arch or the City Museum, etc. There’s going to have to be a section on things to know about Busch Stadium too but I’m not sure how to work that in yet. . .

Well, I'm not sure I'd call VEB child friendly
but I don’t see any reason why the guide shouldn’t help parents out with things their kids can do.

I hear there are tremendous death panels in St. Louis.
I kid. I’ll see if I can include some information for both the young and the old. Formatting all this information will be key . . .

We take my parents to all the normal places we go when they're in town.
I don’t think there is a very major culture gap when it comes to dining/attractions/etc between 20/30-somethings and 50/60-somethings.

of course,
I understand that. I’m talking about the differences between age groups, not among age groups.
Going to the game and dinner afterward could be a pretty easy thing for 60 year old mom and dad and their year 30 year old son and his wife and friends. But it’s not likely that mom and dad want to go for the same entertainment as their son’s crowd. I guess maybe they would but what kinds of stuff would they go for as an alternative?
I wouldn’t have a clue because I moved away from the downtown area about 10 years ago and rarely get into St Louis or the counties anymore. I don’t know what’s there anymore. But I do know I can go hear blues pretty easily if I want to.

Lots of people in lots of age groups like lots of things.
Seems silly to split this by age, color, gender, etc. Taste is taste.

glad I could help.
azruavatar is asking for suggestions. He can take what he wants and leave the rest and decide what’s silly or what’s useful or how broad or narrow he wants his guide to be.
I don’t see any reason why the guide shouldn’t help parents out with things their kids can do.
azruavatar
So why is it silly to suggest things to do for the other end of that?
I didn’t suggest slicing it up by
color and gender, etc.Just something for all ages, that’s all. I don’t see that as silly, really.
If the guide is intended to be for the 20-25 crowd
then the focus could be narrower.
If it’s intended to be all inclusive then the focus can be broader. It’s up to azruavatar.
The only bad suggestion is the one that’s not made.

Safe areas of the city...
might ease some worries for travelers. I know when people hear about cities being unsafe, they typically let their mind think the whole city is that way when it’s not really the case. Might list it as areas to avoid if this is a concern?
Sections of seating that are shaded or provide a breeze, so if you want to not get completely burnt at the game, or be somewhat comfortable (I feel like I’m 60 years old writing this comment).
Various Events in the City that people may enjoy/want to avoid – 4th of July, Taste of St. Louis so people can plan around increased crowds or plan for bonus activities.
looking forward to hearing about bars and venues and stuff like that

so many pizza joints in StL underwhelm me. It took a long time for me to come around to the mess that is Imo’s pizza. It’s basically the most polarizing food in the world but once you get it, you fall in love.

Hot spots for good music
If I’m looking for a good bar, then the music has to lead me there. St Louis has some really good local talent…and a lot of it Blues.

I came to StL nearly 8 years ago now when I was backpacking my way down the Mississippi on a "blues cruise"
along with an old college buddy, we basically visited all the interesting historical sites in the history of blues music, and all the major towns down the Miss, starting up in Minneapolis and finishing in New Orleans, with a few detours to Chicago and Nashville en route.
Caught some decent local music in Soulard, but I think the best venue I went to is right next to Busch Stadium and seems to still exist http://www.bbsjazzbluessoups.com/
Place was absolutely deserted on a wet Tuesday night (I think there was literally about 10 people there in total) but good food, good beer, good music. Worth a visit, especially if you’re in the area to catch a ball game, as it’s literally about 2 mins walk from the stadium.
Still bitching to contact.

It always amazes me that no-one seems to big-up the City Museum as a big tourist attraction in the Lou
I thought it was literally one of the most impressive and interesting attractions I’d seen anywhere in the world, and I am (I think) pretty well travelled. If you’ve got young kids especially it really is a must-see place, but I think there’s plenty there for adults too. Looking at the website, it seems it’s maybe a bit less weird and bohemian than it was when we went there (I don’t remember there being an aquarium, for instance) but still, pretty amazed that St Louis has one of the premier attractions (to my mind) in the mid-west but doesn’t make much of a song and dance about it.
In summary – The City Museum; As Whimsical As All Fuck.

I never mention it because I got tired of mentioning it about three years ago.
But it literally is the most unique and probably most entertaining attraction in the city.
