Adam Wainwright replacement options freakout tread

There's good news and there's bad news. The bad news seems to be that Adam Wainwright has torn the UCL in his pitching elbow and will have to have tommy-john surgery. That sound you're hearing is some combination of the brick that John Mozeliak is dropping, the gasps and wails of a few hundred thousand Cards fans, and the dollar signs turning up in a Kevin-Millwood's-head-shaped slot machine.

So, is the season over? Is Waino's career in danger? Well, the logical answer to both of those questions is no. But damnit if it doesn't feel like my dog just died. If Waino has surgery tonight, he is a 90% bet to recover, but it will be at least four months before he can even start rehabilitating his elbow, and 6-8 months after that before he will be realistically able to even attempt to actually pitch baseball games again. That's March April May June July August September October November December January minimum.

The Cardinals were a just-over 90 win team and were projected basically within the margin of error with the Reds and perhaps just above that against the Brewers. Waino was worth 6.1 WAR in last year. If Wainwright's replacement is the old man Batista, I fully expect them to finish third. The remainder of the depth chart falls below.

In-house:

Ian Snell is technically a major-league pitcher. Ian Snell was sub-replacement level in 2010. He's a bit of depth, but the team just isn't constructed to give him a chance to find his way at the ML level.

Kyle McClellan has long been rumored as a starting candidate, and he has looked like the poor-man's Adam Wainwright at times. Unfortunately that poor man is an unemployed college student who drinks too heavily, or at least he would need to be to mistake McClellan for Waino. He throws a bunch of pitches and one of them is a curveball, and he has been reasonably not-terrible in the bullpen but he would need to sustain his bullpen numbers and take a big step forward to be a frontline starter. He has decent odds of being put into the rotation, and he could be an average pitcher for us this season.

Minor leaguers:

Lance Lynn could be one of the most exciting or most terrifying pitchers on this list, depending on your opinion on the reality of his 97 MPH fastball from late last year. His stuff sounds a lot like Brad Penny. His minor league stats look like the kind that would translate into a major leaguer like Kyle McClellan. He seems like the favorite for the job at this point.

PJ Walters. Nah I'm just messing with you.

Shelby Miller was good in A-ball last year. He was born in 1990 which, if my math is correct, makes him 14 years old. That kind of a thing hasn't been done since that movie about that kid on the Cubs and we all know how that turned out. Plus if we're doing movie stereotypes, we could just bring up Samuel to do a Charlie Sheen impression.

Kevin Millwood:

Kevin Millwood seems like the only free agent of any value. He's a year older than Chris Carpenter. He was crappy last season. His fastball hit a career low in velocity at 89.0 MPH. He just started giving up more flies than grounders and has a K/BB right around 2.0. His swinging strike % dropped to 5.9. He would need a strong dose of Dave Duncan's magic to get his GB rate up, walks down, and HR rate down.

Ugh.

I have no idea.....

There aren’t really any good options at this point.

I’d be inclined to see how cheaply we can get Millwood. If he’ll come for cheap, I’d give him the first crack at things. If Lynn has an impressive ST, maybe he’d be second in line. After that, I think you have to look at Bautista.

Depressing.

In order to win anything this year, we’ll need Lohse to return to form, and both Westy/Garcia to produce at similiar to last year levels. We’ll also need the offense to be way more consistent then it was last year.

i like a cheap Millwood

Millwood should at least give us more innings than any of the in house options. And this team is gonna need someone to pick up some serious innings.

How did you know I was treading back and forth

Durbin?

I really don’t know much about him, but MLBTR considers him the best remaining FA starter.

This has been one shitty week! This time last week Edmonds was vying for 4th OFer spot and set to reach two MAJOR milestones this year, the Cards were the prohibitive favorite to win the NL Central, and based on the recent trend AW was set to earn his first Cy (3rd in 2009, 2nd in 2010). The first week of spring training has never been more depressing!!!

Trade

will this problem push ownership to make a major trade early in the season?

Jeremy Bonderman?

K/BB ratio bounced back a little last year, due to a move from"poor" to “less poor” in K/9 and a move from “poor” to “average” in BB/9. Velocity charts don’t look too awful either.

At least he’s not Batista or Snell?

I'm still surprised the Cards haven't been connected to him more.

At least, I haven’t heard of it yet.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

He even has a reasonable career GB rate

By jove, I think we have a Duncan reclamation project on our hands.

Seems to me that Lynn is the first guy

you have to look at. Last year’s second half make him look like he’s ready and could be a better candidate than we thought. Just as important he doesn’t upset the bullpen as it would if we went with KMac.
However, this won’t happen. I predict we’ll see Ian Snell going four or five innings for a large part of the season. This will upset the bullpen as much as using KMac in the first place.
End of depressed and depressing rant.

I have to agree...

In all honesty, I think he should have had a chance to take Lohse’s spot this year.

It doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Even with a good replacement to Wainwright, they will likely lose 4-5 wins, and so almost certainly won’t be the division winner anyway in what should have been a tight race.

Still, I’d much rather watch him pitch than Ian Snell, who I suspect will be the replacement. Heh, I always thought the Cardinals would basically be the Pirates once Pujols left, who knew it would be the year before?

I would phrase it

Now, I think Lohse will be good this year

well…you have crud pitchers the best thing you can do is limit their exposure. seems like alot of guys win their first game in no small part because the other teams don’t have a book on him. sooo….let every pitcher in the cards organization have a singular start. if it works do it again…the other teams would hate it to death. if not it’ll be late enough in the season to dust off a smoltz or pedro or whichever grizzled vet is well rested for the homestretch.

today’s hitters live off videotape and tendencies. take such away and they are crutchless.

when does RB Fallstrom get inducted to the hall of fame?

the problem with that approach is that it would tax the bullpen quite a bit

seems like an ok theory… would get to see what you have. except there’s the SSS thing

Carp, Garcia, Westbrook, Loshe, and Lynn/McClellan/Snell

will all have career years. We wont have any setbacks at all. Stop worrying.

We could pick up Millwood as insurance

but I’d really like to see what Lynn can do, myself.

Durban, Bonderman, Millwood, in that order.

the latter two haven’t gotten anything besides minor league offers so far, so a ML deal would get it done, and might not even be necessary.

Kenshin Kawakami

The Braves obviously don’t want him. They outrighted him last November and invited him to ST as an NRI. We should be able to get him easily. His salary(6.67M) is a problem, though.

Agreed on Kawakami.

Also want to see what Bryan Augenstein can do.

Never been a big millwood fan

I’m not convinced he’s likely to be a huge improvement over a AAAA guy at his age and recent numbers; maybe a win or so. Realistically, we’re looking long shots for 2011 now so I’d probably not want to make a big trade and give up anything meaningful from the farm.

Realistically, though, we need SOMEONE – even if we are happy with Lynn as #5 (which I’m not sure I am), someone else will get injured at some point, with the like of Carp and Lohse high on that list (ugh). I think I agree with the above on Kawakami – he’d be an interesting add, I don’t think he’s any worse than Millwood and I reckon the braves would deal him for a non-prospect.

Still bitching to contact.
