I enjoyed the read
But to make a hall of fame argument shouldn’t you compare him to a hall of famer? I think that would make a stronger argument.

then our standards will keep getting lower and lower
If the HOF standard was Kirby Puckett for instance (who he absolutely blows out of the water), then the “HOF” in my opinion would be really diminished
Believe me if we use the argument that he was better than Player A who did make the HOF then Edmonds should be in, in a heartbeat
He still deserves to be in because he was pretty much the median Hall of Fame CF (Look at this list and now look at Edmonds’ stats – he’s pretty much in the middle) and he beats the 50-60ish WAR (an arbitrary number) that a normal borderline HOF is with 68.1 WAR

I thought the 50-60is number was based on HOF stats as well?
I mean, it’s a tad arbitrary, but not completely.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Real sports journalism not on ESPN or STLToday?
Blasphemy!
It’s nice to read an article that backs up statements with facts instead of “Edmonds can’t get in unless Larry Walker and Steve Garvey get in.”
Special thanks to the St. Louis area weatherpeople
who predicted this bit of freezing rain that has turned area traffic into a cluster$!@* this morning.
Wait, you’re saying they didn’t say a word about it?
Two problems with J'Ed's HOF resume
1) He had a short career or at least his counting stats are not that great.
2) He played in the steroid era and so much of his value is derived from homeruns and walks. Those two stats are tough to translate across eras, regardless of what OPS+ tells us.
Five years from now moderate average, high obp sluggers will be a dime a dozen on the HOF ballot- or at least it will seem that way. Despite the gold gloves, he will have a tough time.

Some interesting numbers:
These three players are all centerfielders:
Career OPS+
Player A: 135
Player B: 132
Player C: 140
5 Year Peak OPS+
Player A: .290/.382/.604/.986 OPS+ 148
Player B: .298/.410/.593/1.003 OPS+ 156
Player C: .311/.403/.606/1.009 OPS+ 157
Anyone want to guess who these guys are?
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
This will probably give it away...
Two contemporaries, one from an earlier era.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
I know A and B!

Had to look up C.
"In 2035, 25 young men will be able to call themselves world champions. Some of those guys haven’t even been born yet. And some of fang are Asian." -Mike Shannon
absolutely.
But I don’t think he’ll ever get above %50 of the vote, unfortunately.
"In 2035, 25 young men will be able to call themselves world champions. Some of those guys haven’t even been born yet. And some of fang are Asian." -Mike Shannon
And it will be due mostly to the era that he played in.
Had he played for the Expos and Cubs in the 80’s, however, he’d probably get in…
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
I reckon one is Bernie Williams and one is Junior Griffey.

Figured the first two would be Griffey and Edmonds
Is player C Duke Snider?
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
And wow
Snider is a really good comp for Edmonds
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Ah, ah, that's not the same thing!
I’m talking about their career totals. Your post was about combining two different parts of their careers.
In fact, your post is about their dissimilarities, isn’t it? One peaked in his 20’s, the other in his 30’s?
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
In terms of where they peaked in relation to their career though
it’s nearly exactly the same, and Duke’s decline was very similar to Edmonds’.

Good point
Anyway, was Snider Player C? Seemed a good guess.

Answers:
Player A: Junior Griffey
Player B: Jim Edmonds
Player C: Duke Snider
Griffey is a shoo-in for the first ballot HOF: 600+ homers, 10 GG, one of the 5 best players in baseball from 1993-1999.
Snider is a HOF centerfielder with a peak and subsequent decline very similar to Edmonds. I think Snider is his best comparison, and Snider is probably the 6th best CF of all time behind Mays, Mantle, Dimaggio, Cobb, and Speaker. He fits right in there somewhere. Here are the guys in the HOF as CF: http://goo.gl/tTAcu What’s incredible about that list is that, compared to other outfield positions, there’s a real lack of centerfielders in the HOF, and Edmonds is probably in the middle of pack if you compare him to those guys.

If we can keep Shelby away from the cocaine, I think we'll be ok.
In his first 10 seasons in the big leagues, Gooden averaged 30 starts a year and 213 innings. Show me where bringing him up early hurt his durability. Doc’s problem was drugs and night life, not being unready or underdeveloped. Unready? Please — he struck out 534 hitters in his first two seasons and posted an ERA of 2.00. I’d say he was ready.
I don’t think we should push Miller into the rotation right now, that’s just throwing good money after bad. But to say that we should keep him down in the minors to develop is silly unless he has mechanical issues that need to be worked out. He can get injured just as easily in the minors throwing pitches as in the majors throwing pitches.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?

But people talking about Miller in the big leagues…..please stop. He could go out and have a K/9 of 25 in spring training and they would send him down.
Not afraid to nitpick
I'm not disagreeing with that
I’m disagreeing the Doc Gooden wasn’t ready to pitch in the majors when he was brought up. Which is a silly argument when you go and look at the numbers.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Yes i know that
it wasn’t exactly the best comparison and your right about Gooden. My memory of BRef pages is less than exemplary.
Oh god, i've become... myself.
I am the anti-fang
Agreed.
He needs more time to develop a second off speed pitch and get used to the routine of throwing every fifth day and 6-7 innings a start.
But let’s not compare him to Doc Gooden then either.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Yeah, Miller is a good 20yo pitcher
Gooden was an otherworldly 20yo pitcher. Off the top of my head, I would guess that Doc had a top 5 curve of all time. Of. All. Time.

But if Gooden gets drafted by, say, the Twins, does he have HOF career? Maybe he gets hooked on pot instead of cocaine, lol.

This news makes me genuinely upset that we did not get Jeff Francis.
Not that he would be capable of replacing Wainwright, but he is probably capable of most mitigating his loss.

Jeff Francis
threw 104.1 innings in 2010. True, he posted a 5.00 ERA, but he also posted a 3.88 FIP and 3.94 xFIP. He is a very good bet to have a better ERA in 2011, especially pitching his home games in the pitcher-friendly confines of Busch Stadium III.
By comparison, Kevin Millwood posted a 5.10 ERA in 2010 with an accompanying FIP of 4.86 and xFIP of 4.66. Without question, Millwood will benefit some from moving from the AL East to the NL Central, but I still think I would rather have had Francis stowed away for a rainy day, or, a day like today when it is a thunderstormy day.

I really wanted Lohse to be our #5...
And have to pitch decently to keep his job or be replaced by Lynn, Snell, etc…..now he’s our #4 and we are almost guarenteed to be stuck with him the entire season in our rotation no matter how bad he is.

I was talking to a cousin of mine
Yankees fan. He said Yanks really want and need Carp. I say if we are out of it by the All-Star game, we trade him for some nice prospects. Who knows if we’ll pick up his option anyways.
I need signature suggestions. The Boog and the Walrus have both departed. And it's not funny anymore... sniff
we can't afford him
and i won’t be terribly surprised if he ends up in pinstripes
i would like to see Carp throwing for strikes

Thing is
They really only have one guy I would want (Montero), and they certainly aren’t dealing him for Chris Carpenter.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
You don't trade him
and you lose the opt-out money You trade him and you get some sort of return, assuming we are out of the playoff race.
I do not know, however, if you opt.out of his extension, can you offer arb and win the draft picks?

worst timing in the world but the Cubs weekend packs go on sale this morning at 10 (in 20 minutes)
You now have the opportunity to purchase up to four (4) Cubs Weekend Flex Packs. Cubs Weekend Flex Packs feature up to four (4) tickets for your choice of a Cubs Weekend game, plus a minimum of two additional games from the 2011 season, excluding Opening Day and Cubs games.
here’s three passwords to whoever wants to use them (please comment if you take one so people know):

Very nice piece on Edmonds, DanUp.
It’s a shame the news on Wainwright has hijacked the day’s discussion.
