Cardinals Sign Carlos Beltran, Are Now Early Favorites to Win NL in 2005
All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran finalized a two-year deal with the Cardinals on Thursday evening, a source familiar with the negotiations confirmed to The Post-Dispatch.
The switch-hitting outfielder brings some desired depth to the Cardinals outfield while also restoring some sock to the middle of the lineup that will be without three-time MVP Albert Pujols. Beltran, who will turn 35 in April, was one of the leading hitters in the National League in 2011 with a top-10 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .525, which ranked eighth among NL outfielders.
The Cardinals and Beltan’s agent, Dan Lozano, were able to finalize a deal Thursday evening. Beltran missed significant playing time in 2009 and 2010 as he recovered from knee surgeries, and the Cardinals wanted to understand more about his health before completing the deal. The Cardinals intensified their pursuit of the switch-hitter this week.

So I publish a main post with charts that I wrote over my lunch hour
and come to the main page to find out I’m trampling on Fritz’s post. I apologize.

Beltran deal is done. It’s for two years, worth just more than $25 million.
why wasn't this done two weeks ago?

OM NOM NOM
The Cardinals and their fans were privileged to get the best of Pujols. It truly was an honor. And now the Cardinals and their fans don't have to worry about paying for the worst of Pujols.--Miklasz
I suspect Mr. Beltran may have had something to do with that.
Weighing offers, considering the options, etc.

Beltran loves his Christmas miracles.
And he needed to buy an airline.
It’s for obscenely wealthy people only. You or I have never heard of it.

Two questions.
1) Does this signing negate some of the negative points that Mozeliak picked up from the Skip deal? I think it does.
2) What is Skip’s role on the team now? If you assume there are 2100 outfield PAs available this season, and figure Holliday for 600 (approx 140 games), 500 each for Jay and Beltran and 400 for Craig, that leaves ~100 PAs for the 5th OF. As we’re required to keep Komatsu on the ML roster or offer him back to the team from which we took him, and since he’s likely a better defender and no worse a hitter than Skippy, I don’t see how having a 6th OF/emergency 2B/Apocalypse-level emergency other IF is warranted at any cost.

we'll give komatsu back because we won't release skip to keep him on.
and skip will truly be “super utility,” acting as a fourth middle infielder and a fifth outfielder. not that he should get many at bats doing either…

No
Signing Skip is still a waste of money. It’s not like other teams were clamoring to sign him, and even if they were, so what? Let him go.
Skip is already pretty much guaranteed a career in St. Louis after his playing days are over (given his affability and fanbase), they didn’t need to reward him by giving him a silly contract like that.
Skips clearly a bench player now
I’ve never been a fan of Skip as a starting second baseman, and once Craig gets healthy he won’t see as much outfield time. Looks like he will be a pinch hitter, defensive replacement in the outfield, and an occasional spot starter in outfield or second base. However, Skip doesn’t have a big ego and will accept a bench role. While Skip will make 1.5 mil in 2012 and 2013, its a cut from 2010 and 2009 when he made 2 mil plus.
Who will Schumaker be a defensive replacement for?
Holliday, Craig, and Jay are all better defensive outfielders than Schumaker.
