Friday Morning Thread: Talk about Cody Ross Maybe

DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 16: Cody Ross #13 of the San Francisco Giants watches his solo homerun off of starting pitcher Alex White #43 of the Colorado Rockies in the fifth inning at Coors Field on September 16, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

I'm still in transit, at least mentally--while I figure out my computing situation and attempt to turn my brain back on, maybe talk about Cody Ross or something? More forthcoming this afternoon (#developing.)

my girlfriend takes great pleasure in showing me unflattering pictures of Ke$ha.

I’m not sure why, I have no interest in knowing anything about her.

Ross is reportedly looking for 3 years, $18 million. Absolutely no chance #Reds offer anything near that

That's a lot of cash for a guy with such a severe platoon split

Granted, he’s a lefty-masher (wOBA .384 versus lefties, .317 versus righties), but that’s a lot of money for a guy who hits well against pitchers who only appear 25-30% of the time (percentage figure is a wild-ass guess by me).

$6 million is a lot of money for a part-time outfielder, to be sure.

Any reports on what Crisp is asking for?

Nope, I haven't seen anything on him yet

Just kind of reacquainting myself with his line from last year, and that .314 OBP / .379 SLG is disappointing. Both career lows (for full season).

any guesses as to what Beltran would take?

He’s probably going to get at least 2/24 or so, right?

by ArkansasTravs on Dec 16, 2011 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

It's looking like it might take 3 years

Mike Shannon: "That strikeout was brought to you by...by...well, I don't know what it was brought to you by!"

John Rooney: "It wasn't brought to you by anything Mike."

by SheckieZx on Dec 16, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure the Cards are willing to go

2 years + an option with a not insignificant buyout. Will a team go over them for 3? And what if that team sucks? Would Beltran be willing to take more money but go to a team that sucks? I think not. I think he wants to win and the Cards can offer that.

by jjray on Dec 16, 2011 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

So,

would a 2/24 with an option year do it? I wonder, given the other signings, if he’s not going to expect something more like 3/45 guaranteed. What AAV is the Cards breaking point for Beltran? What should be our max offer?

I always admired/feared Beltran. Having him and Berkman both on the team would feel really weird. A feeling that I wouldn’t mind one bit if we repeat!

by ArkansasTravs on Dec 16, 2011 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know but the Cards should not

panic. The Jays got Darvish so their pockets are lighter. The Rockies got Cuddyer, probably not so hot after Beltran now. Things are trending right for the Cards to land Beltran with a 2 year deal.

by jjray on Dec 16, 2011 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

I would take the over on 24 over 2.

Prices have been high this year and outfielders are slim. Although I couldn’t imagine a team giving him 45 guaranteed, but I guess all it takes is one.

by RoadBird on Dec 16, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Cody Ross does destroy lefties--career .384 against LHP, 135 wRC+

And most years he has been an average-ish hitter overall, or a little above. Seems like he can play average-ish defense at all three outfield spots too. If he’s really asking for 3 years and 18 million, that seems like a bit much to me given how crowded our outfield might get.

by mattybobo on Dec 16, 2011 10:36 AM EST reply actions

Depending on price for Ross (like, less than $6 million per year)

A Craig/Ross platoon would be pretty kicky-assy.

by lightbulb on Dec 16, 2011 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

If we can't get

Carlos Beltran, maybe we should go after our 26th rounder from ‘91. But seriously, Ross is 3 1/2 years younger than Beltran, I wouldn’t mind him, even if he’s not a + defender. Still not nearly as good as Beltran, and $6 mil a year is too much for Ross..

Don't fall into this trap, guay.

Ross is a mid-tier, limited, possibly declining vet who wants a muti-year, $15-20MM contract. He’s 31 and he’s been a 2WAR/500PA player in his career. Meh.

IMO, these are exactly the guys you avoid. Signing Ross is employing the anti-stars and scrubs approach – he’s neither an ultra-cheap scrub with upside, nor an actual star worth paying significant dollars to. He caps your upside and constrains your finances.

nah, Juan Enc signed for about what he was worth

I’m still sad about the way that Cardinal Nation treated him. yeah, he wasn’t Larry Walker- or reggie sanders- or 2011 Lance Berkman- but few are. And, for the most part, those guys don’t sign for multiple years at $5M/yr. Yeah, it’s TLR’s fault that he kept playing Juan after Luddy showed signs of breaking out, but we’ve had the advantage of seeing additional data now that shows that that might not have been that irrational (despite what I thought at the time).

Anyway, hating juan enc in 2011+ is just bad form. He was what he was, a random gapfiller for an aging GM who thought his Edmondses would be 6-8 fWar players forever, and for whatever reason, we blamed Juan Enc for when Edmonds and Rolen fell of a cliff. And then Aaron Miles hit a foul ball that let us off the hook, and Juan was conveniently never to be heard from again…

I disagree.

I think Buehrle, moving to the NL, has a much better chance to live up to his contract. He is a clockwork 3.5ish WAR pitcher. Changing league’s will help offset a bit of his age decline. I don’t like either contract but I dislike Buehrle’s less. Wilson’s is six years long, which is never a good idea for a pitcher.

I think they are planning on playing him at 1B once Helton's contract expires.

I don't know how Cuddyer's bat plays at first base.

Given his age, though, I’d have to think his ability to field multiple positions badly will only get worse. Although, as I understand the use of the adjective “versatile” by baseball types, that might not make him any less “versatile” in their eyes.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on that

He’s coming up on 33, and his up-and-down offense would give me pause to think about putting him at first base. I would think he could really disappoint there, but who knows.

by mattybobo on Dec 16, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I had a poorly worded comment.

I meant that sportswriters seem to be praising Cuddyer as “versatile” but he can’t defend any position well and he is aging. Perhaps the Rockies buy less into that “versatile” description over the life of the deal. In 2012, sure, they’ll play him all over. But, after that, they’ll move the increasingly bad defender to first base, where his age and lack of range is less of a problem. That, and hitting in Coors, may have the Rockies feeling that Cuddyer is a good bet to live up to his contract. I don’t know that I agree but I could see their thinking being this.

I thought the same thing last year about Berkman when Aubrey Huff signed before him.

“How in the world will we get Berkman, who is vastly better than Aubrey Huff, when Huff just signed a two-year, $22mm deal?”

And then, we went and signed Berk for 1-yr, $8mm.

These things aren’t always rational.

I feel like everybody else on this site viewed the Berkman signing as a huge risk

And that it was essentially market value.

by mysterui on Dec 16, 2011 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know, I thought the Berkman signing was very low risk...

because he’d either be healthy and hit much better than a RF Jay/Craig platoon, or he’d get hurt and then we’d play Jay/Craig anyway. So the only risk was losing $8MM, but there as very little performance risk (because the baseline performance of Jay/Craig didn’t change) — it was pretty much all upside. (I didn’t see much risk that Berkman would fall off the cliff performance-wise, sans injury, or if he fell off that much, he could be benched and Jay/Craig would play anyway).

To me, it’s the same thing with Beltran (assuming we can get him for a decent price). He’ll either be healthy and outperform Jay, or he’ll get hurt and we’re out the money, but Jay plays anyway. And if he’s healthy, then the chaining benefits (like with Berkman, Rasmus, Craig, and Jay last year) are fantastic, because Jay/Craig will be taking tons of PAs away from Skippy or whoever else would play if Beltran weren’t signed.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Dec 16, 2011 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

The difference being

that Berkman had a down year in 2010, and was looking to re-establish his value. Beltran had a bounce-back year this past season, and I’m thinking is looking to cash in now on what will probably be his last lucrative (read: overpaid) contract. He’s gonna be 35 in April, and his defensive skills are declining. In a couple of years, he’ll likely be either a 1bman or a DH.

The Rockies might call it quits on OFers now

So, by adding Cuddyer to Gonzalez and Fowler (who had a really good 2011), I’d guess they’ll be out on any more big-money outfielders. And if the Jays are shelling out big-time CAD for Darvish, maybe they’ll back off on Beltran as well.

Is that they get two draft picks out of him (and the Rockies don’t lose one due to the modified status). As such, the Cardinals picks for Dotel and Jackson drop down a bit, and they will continue to drop down as more free agents higher rated higher than them sign with new teams.

Deep, Slightly Random Thoughts

1. I once held Cody Ross’s bat for 2 innings as I tried to get it signed by the Giants for the little girl that it clonked in the knee (I was successful but left with pine tar on my hands).

2. Did you know that, if a major leaguer hits a ball just right, and has the right finish on their barrel, then some of the ink from the various pieces of artwork on a baseball will transfer over to the barrel of the bat? Cody Ross’ bat was covered with transferred ink.

3. I don’t know why the Blue Jays always sign guys with problematic mechanics (they seem to be scouting for bad stuff), but, based on what little I’ve seen of his arm action (Inverted L) I don’t see this deal yielding great value.

Boog would have made that play.

Molly Knight of FESPN has an artical up on Freese

It will appear in the dec 26th issue of ESPN the Mag.

I thought this was interesting:

Sanders, who also played baseball, met Freese and was blown away by his instincts. At a summer-ball game, they faced a pitcher with a filthy slider, and after two at-bats, Sanders had struck out twice, badly fooled. Freese was 2-for-2 with two doubles. “So I asked him: ‘Is this guy tipping his pitches? How are you doing this?’” says Sanders. “And he tells me he’s been listening to the way the catcher’s gear squeaks to figure out if he’s setting up inside or outside.” Sanders followed his lead and in his next at-bat roped a double.

We need to keep some WD40 around the clubhouse for Yadi’s gear.

Loogys are hard to predict year over year — if ever there were a position where a team should throw crap against the wall until it sticks, it’s the second lefty in the pen. I’d be more upset if I thought there were anyone in the minors that was ready to fill this role. I would have been fine going with one LH pitcher in the pen, but, again, whatever.

The issue is that we still don't have a spot for him, even if you could put together a package for him.

I just don’t see the Cards trading for a starter unless Lohse or Westbrook are traded and I don’t see either of those guys getting traded anytime soon.

Better to let them pitch on their one-year deals and be replaced by Shelby Miller and whoever else next year.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Dec 16, 2011 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

But if we got Gonzalez we could

Attempt to move Westy or put him in the pen. Then next year, instead of having Shelby and whoever round out the rotation, we could have Shelby and Gonzalez. We would take the hit this year by eating Westbrook’s salary, but with no Pujols we can afford that.

there’s room. We have five starters in 2012 (AW-Garcia-Carp-Lohse-Westy). In 2013 we have four (AW-Garcia-Carp-Miller). Then in 2014 we have three (AW-Garcia-Miller).

I guess Martinez could become a starter, but then AW might leave via FA in 2014. Lynn will be around. If the Cardinals really liked someone like Gio, they could fit him in.

What I'm saying is that I don't see any motivation on the team's part

to put together the type of prospect package needed to get Gio and then to turn around and shift Westbrook to the pen.

The FO has already said we’d rather spend money than give up prospects, much less to give up prospects to add a starting pitcher when starting pitching isn’t our biggest need and it would result in an $8mm long-man (Westbrook).

(exorbitant prospect price) + (lack of immediate need for SP) + ($8MM long-man sitting in pen) = not gonna happen.

OT: Probability Help Fantasy Football

I am trying to figure out the probabilities of team A beating team B given the amount points scored during the season to get a rough estimate of the probability of each team beating the other in our fantasy football playoffs.

Assuming team A scores an average of 85.1 points with a standard dev of 12 and team B scores an average of 90 points with a standard deviation of 15 and both distributions are normal and independent of each other, what is the probability that team A beats team B?

Winner of the prestigious 2011 MVL as presented by Alxfritz.

"You didn't win LOY, but you did win MVL, which is a prestigious award I just made up. And that’s something RiverRat can never take from you." - Alxfritz

by Green Man! on Dec 16, 2011 3:26 PM EST reply actions

Warning: I'm about to get seriously mathy up in here.

(Team A’s score – team B’s score) is a normally distributed random variable.

The mean of A-B is -4.9, because that’s 85.1-90.
The standard deviation of A-B is sqrt(12^2 + 15^2) = about 19

So, in terms of probabilities, this variable only has to fall .26 standard deviations above the mean for A to win. So (just from consulting a Z-table) team A has about a 40% chance of pulling the “upset”.

Who do we go after next offseason? We should have 4 spots in the rotation already filled. Along with a 3B, SS, 2B, LF, RF/1B already under contract. Bullpen is basically set. Molina should get extended. Jay could be slotted in CF. I like to spend money, but this team doesn’t have many holes and costs less than $70M. Who do we go after next winter?

by rumors on Dec 16, 2011 3:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions

The SP market actually looks pretty good next offseason

I’d like to see us go after Matt Cain, but I can’t really back that up with any other information.

by Phizzle on Dec 16, 2011 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

We should trade Matt Adams.

I heard from this guy that the Giants will be looking for a left-handed first baseman. (No, I have never heard of Brandon Belt and I don’t see how that is relevant).

by mattybobo on Dec 16, 2011 5:27 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Is it that set?

Let’s see:
LF – Holliday, check
CF – Jay(?)
RF – Craig, check
3B – one of Freese, Cox, MCarp, check
SS – Furcal, check (unless he falls apart)
2B – are you counting on Wong?, maybe
1B – ??, (unless one of Craig/Freese moves over)
C – ?, I’m not sure Molina won’t decide to follow his buddy out west
SP – Waino, Carp, Garcia, Miller, ?
RP – should be fine or easily filled

So we will have question marks (of one level or another) at one rotation spot, 2B, 1B/RF/3B, and, possibly, C and CF. Eh, that’s not too bad. How well Freese & Craig do this year could make a big difference in the “holes” needed to fill by FA.

by ArkansasTravs on Dec 16, 2011 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Very few holes, considering the cash we will have opening up.

2b- I don’t see us signing someone, because anyone worth signing in next years FA class will be looking for a multi-year deal. If Wong isn’t ready, I think we’ll go with Descalso/Greene until he is.

1B- Between Craig/Adams and a possible Berk extension I think we have it covered. No one on the FA list looks worth signing.

CF/RF- one of them could be filled by Craig, if Adams or Berkman is on the team. There are quite a few OF on the market next year that I’d be interested in.

SP- with one spot open and 4 or 5 FAs that interest me, I could see us signing one of them.

C- if Molina leaves I will be very depressed. I love him.

by rumors on Dec 16, 2011 4:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Regarding Molina

I would like to think we would have the money to retain him, but of all our close-to-being-FAs (basically him and Wainwright), I think he’s highest on the list of “might possibly leave.”

by avs18fan on Dec 16, 2011 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

We shouldn't rule out re-signing Berkman

He wants to go on one-year deals and if he has another decent season there’s no reason to expect he won’t sign again for 1 year in the $8-12 million range.

There’s likely no way of knowing how solid Adams will be unless he tears up AAA so hard this year that he comes up and plays half the season replacing an injured Berkman, so it’d be better to have Berkman around again with Adams figuring to get some PAs here and there.

There are a lot of good SP available next year, but in terms of position players most of the good ones have options, like Cano, Kinsler, and Stephen Drwe.

Brandon Phillips will be available unless they finish working out an extension. He could be an infield option, though he’ll be 32 or 33.

Erick Aybar could be interesting at SS but we’ll have Furcal still, so that sounds unlikely.

There are a number of decent CF, like Michael Bourn, BJ Upton, and Shane Victorino. It’s possible one of them would be an option.

The elite players are mostly SP. With Carpenter’s career not likely to last much longer, it’s possible we’d be in on one, but with Miller and Martinez set to join the rotation over the next few years I’m not sure how likely that is. It’d certainly be fun to sign Greinke or Hamels, though…

by oplaid on Dec 16, 2011 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

I agree about Berkman and Adams

But we should definitely sign Aybar. He could be long term SS. Move Furcal 2B until Wong is ready.

damn Ian Kinsler is ridiculously good.

I wish we could have him at 2nd base. He had a BABIP last year and was still able to hit .255/.355/.477 and put up 7.7fWAR.

by mick311 on Dec 16, 2011 6:32 PM EST via mobile reply actions

His career BABIP is .282

So it probably does stand to raise some, sure, but in both seasons where he hit 30+ home runs, his BABIPs were under .250, partially because some of his balls that would drop for hits were going out instead.

Sure it stands to rise but I wouldn’t read too much about bad luck into his offensive numbers from last season.

It’s quite possible he puts it together and posts an 11-12% HR/FB rate with a .280 BABIP while staying healthy for a full season and keeping his depressed K rate, but I wouldn’t count on it. More likely he posts around a .360 wOBA like he usually does.

Anyway I’m not even sure why I’m writing this, because Kinsler is awesome and one of my favorite players, so I’m not really sure what I’m even arguing.

it could be worth 135, with a 6th year, but there is a huge 12.5 million buyout of that year. i’m going to assume the option is not picked up.

not really sure what the real official Yankees offer was. i see 6 years, 140 million, and then i see a 7th year tacked on, “at a lower rate”. i’m going to assume 7 years, 160 million, and because i don’t have any better information, i’m going to assume it’s 23.3 a year except the last year which is 20.

so i actually disagree with my earlier statement- netted out at 5% with all of my assumptions holding true, Clifff Lee left 34 million on the table in present value. that’s a LOT. assuming the Cardinals offered 220/10, and that the structure is exactly the AAV every year, Albert only would have left 27 million on the table to sign with the Cardinals.

of course, this post is useless, because when Strauss says present value, i’m sure he just means the actual nominal value of the contract.

yeah

my memory of it was it being a much smaller gap. now, if we get rid of that last speculative 20 million dollar year, the gap is a lot smaller, but still, as a 32 year old when he signed the deal, Lee must know/expect that he’s not going to get really, really paid again- so i am impressed.

How about this? For the first 98 years of the National League, only one player hit two grand slams in one game, and he was a pitcher: Atlanta’s Tony Cloninger on July 3, 1966. The next NL player to do it was the Cardinals’ Fernando Tatis, and he hit his two grand slams in the same inning off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park, in 1999.

Interesting

My first impression: Holliday looks low to me, Berkman maybe a teeny tiny bit low. My heart says Craig looks really low, but my brain says probably not that much. Molina looks spot on to me, Jay probably too. Same heart/brain problem with Freese as I have with Craig. I would hope for a bit more from Furcal but I’d take his ZiPS if he can put together average-ish defense.

yeah..

something tells me Freese will hit more than 9 homeruns next year… same with Craig and 16… btw… where’s Beltran on that list?

wow

one of my FB friends just posted a pic where somebody(presuming kids, but you never know) had picked up a dead deer and put it on one of the city square benches in town last nite. There’s one that we never thought of doing.

Doesn't a dead deer weigh 400+ lbs?

If you can get it sitting up on that bench with a cigarette in its mouth it is pretty funny, but the commotion would surely get you noticed.

Well, if you happened to be up at 4AM, and you like watching Starcraft, holy hell, the Blizzard Cup final was the best match ever.

A bit disappointed DRG didn’t complete the comeback, but you can’t have everything.

Was happy to see MC do well,

and I like that MMA won after beating MVP. Sucks that no foreigners could make a splash.

Stephano did pretty well

Stephano won 2 games in his group, he nearly made it out. That’s a lot better than many were expecting.

…. and NaNiwa certainly made a splash with the probe rush against NesTea, just not the kind we’d like :p

All of NaNiwa’s games were extremely close, too. He was really a bit unlucky.

Good?

We had our holiday party today. Technically it went from 2:30-5:00 but we all went out afterwards

I was home and in bed drunk by 10:00. And I woke up like 5 minutes ago still sort-of drunk =(

oh yeah I forgot it's almost Christmas

I can never get a good night’s sleep if I fall asleep drunk, I always wake up a couple of hours later.

WHY WON'T THE CARDINALS ZIPS WORK FOR ME

Can we talk about these ZIPS projections.

I hate to sound homerish but they seem bad to me.

Bad as in, nonsensical, of low accuracy, etc.

Which ones do you think are bad?

I’m gonna guess Freese, Holliday and Berkman.

For one, I’m pretty sure the OBP and SLG aren’t park adjusted, meaning they are going to be lower than they would be in a context neutral setting. Also ZIPS projections are usually pretty conservative.

http://playahardnine.wordpress.com/2010/12/23/cardinals-2011-zips-hitters/

I agree that they are a little low, but I think they are going for a weighted means – and the distribution is always going to be skewed a little towards replacement level.

Freese actually doesn't surprise me. His hitting in the majors is frighteningly similar to Nick Stavinoha.

Freese, Jay, Berkman, Schumaker, Descalso make sense.

Pujols (too high), Craig, Holliday, Matt Carpenter (dude has been around .400 wOBA every stop in the minors yet he is projected worse than Mark Hamilton), and all of the pitchers and playing time for everyone.

I can't find Pujols'

Craig and Holliday are both high BABIP players, so I think that’s why their projections are low. Hollidays I actually think is pretty fair – it’s projecting him for .320 BABIP, which is probably not too pessimistic given his age. His ISOd and ISOp look fine to me. With Craig, I think the AVG and OBP look good, but the ISOp seems way too low. Carp’s ISOd and ISOp look fine, but his average is way too low. His projected BABIP is at .299, which is good, but his strikeouts are too high.

The pitchers seem ok to me. Wainwright is way too optimistic (although ZIPs doesn’t know about his injury), and Lohse and Westbrook are probably too high, but Carp and Garcia seem fine to me. The relievers all look good to me, but I think Rzep will beat that projection handily.

The playing time estimates are definitely screwy. I never use computer projected playing time because they don’t take into account any of the factors that directly determine playing time.
