Yadier Molina Wins 4th Gold Glove Morning Open Thread

I see yesterday's overflow thread is filling up in its own right and I'm not sure what time RB will post. To hold us over until then, I thought I'd put up a Gold Glove thread. The winners of the Gold Glove Award have been announced. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will add a fourth trophy to his trophy case and a fourth Gold Glove tattoo to his arm. Congratulations, Yadi!

Yadi has neck tats in the main post picture.

You just can’t see them due to the camera angle and his body contortion.

Also, Matt Kemp once again hits well enough to win the gold glove. Hell, give him two!

Give Yadi two gold gloves while we’re at it, hit hitting was awesome at catcher this year.

Sounds about right.

But I hope Yadi is not winning Gold Gloves he doesn’t deserve later in his career at the expense of another great defensive catcher.

Then he would have won another one. This award is the W-L of fielding, being good can help, but it isn’t indicative either way and offensive support is most important

I think Uncharted had the crazy vampire-Nazis and Uncharted II had the insane creatures with the massive Yeti-man. I can really appreciate the quickness and throwing arm that it takes to pull that off with any regularity.

it was one of those plays that really sucked my girlfriend into liking baseball.

I can’t remember which one, but her response was:

Wow. Wait…Wait a second. He was so close to first base! Was he on his knees when he threw that? No way. NO WAY!

That is very near verbatim.

i dunno what the consensus is here...

but i thought this was by far yadi’s worst year defensively. obviously that means little to nothing for GG, but i guess yadi’s reputation was enough.

by bigmcq16 on Nov 2, 2011 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

But Yadi's worst defensive year is still better than any other NL catcher's usual year.

It would have to take an outstanding season from some other player to come close to what Yadi does, even in a down year.

At what point do the Cardinals move on from Pujols?

Obviously this offseason will look drastically different in the two scenarios, 1) sign Pujols or 2) don’t sign Pujols. But in the case of #2, they will have extra money to spend on other positions. However, the longer you wait to sign Pujols, the free agent pool becomes less attractive.

So what is the cutoff on when the Cardinals should stop pursuing Pujols? Do you just go “pujols or bust” and deal with the risk factor of a lost offseason?

by Fleabottom on Nov 2, 2011 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think a lot of the FA movement will wait on Pujols.

Most likely Pujols sets the market for Fielder, rather than vice versa (though maybe not… same money same years, I might prefer Fielder). Reyes might wait on Pujols, too, since Cards are a likely suitor if they don’t get AP back.

I think the Cards will push hard to get to a yes or no point with Pujols, and go from there. I doubt the FA cupboard is bare yet at that point.

by Pegasus on Nov 2, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Before we got all this extra post-season revenue

I would have said something like, “just because be don’t sign Pujols in one scenario doesn’t mean the team will necessarily allocate whatever money they would have used on something else”. In other words, they could very well have Hypothetical Budget A, where we sign Pujols with an increased payroll, or Hypothetical Budget B, where we don’t sign Pujols and stay at something like our typical payroll.

by mattybobo on Nov 2, 2011 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding the Cardinals options

I feel that if Pujols doesn’t sign, its clear the Cardinals move Berkman to 1st and Craig to RF for 2012. So the positions you are looking to spend money on would be 2nd, SS or possibly CF. Outside of Reyes, the free agent options at SS and 2nd look like slim pickings.

Andre Ethier?

ANDRE ETHIER? I mean, Matt Kemp winning is egregious enough, but seriously, you can’t swing a cat without hitting 10 better right fielders than Andre Ethier. Just off the top of my head in the NL:

  • Justin Upton (my pick)
  • Jason Heyward (even though he played fewer innings than Ethier did, he was still A FULL WIN BETTER)
  • Corey Hart
  • Jayson Werth
  • Jay Bruce

What a fucking terrible pick. I mean, at least Gordon in LF is defensible, regardless of the fact that Gardner was 2 entire wins better than he was. Ethier just isn’t even a defensible selection.

Oh, and I’ll take Pedroia on my team any day. Dude wins an MVP and plays for the Red Sox and is still incredibly underrated as a baseball player.

Pujols or not Pujols. That is the question.

by fourstick on Nov 3, 2011 10:16 AM EDT reply actions

Considering the awful mess the Dodgers were all season

Their players are coming away with a decent bit of hardware this offseason, especially if Kemp/Kershaw get the MVP/CY.
