Morning Thread: Mozeliak Says Coaching Staff to be Set by Friday
As an open act to RB's post, I thought I start a fresh morning thread. According to a report in the Post-Dispatch this morning, John Mozeliak stated that the Cardinals coaching staff would be set by Friday but remained relatively non-committal as to how many members of the current staff would return for 2012.
Mozeliak remained vague when asked about the staff's make-up except to say he expected Duncan to return and hoped Oquendo would as well after speaking to Matheny.
Feel free to use the morning open thread to discuss the coaching staff, free agency, trades, etc.

So
do we think that Oquendo will ever be manager of the Cardinals of St. Louis?
Well, baseball was fun.
Only if things go poorly for Matheny

Oquendo manages Cardinals
if Matheny fails and Maloney fails and pop warner fails and etc.
and so on.
Maybe
because Jose could always slip through a wormhole and pop out in an alternative universe wherein the Cardinals were too gun shy go with such an unproven managerial commodity such as Matheny. And just maybe some Philip K. Dick event occurs disproving the theories of Einstein and the St. Louis Cardinals from the alternate universe managed by Jose Oquendo could play the St. Louis Cardinals currently inhabiting the time-space continuum in which we that are reading this message currently find ourselves …. unless the SBNetwork has a very cool data bridge to other time space-space continuums, in which case the whole concept gets too confusing for my brain.
Mirror Universe Mike Matheny would have a goatee and a scar on his eye.
By now he would just have been appointed as Supreme Archon of the Cubs Imperium by the Council of Wrigley, whose activities are always shrouded in mystery despite the fact that, in many ways, they are the true power in Chicago.

I hadn't thought about the fact that
in an alternate universe the Cubs might not suck. Just boggles the mind. I’ll try not to fall through the wormhole thereby staying in this universe where the Cubs shall always suck.
Not sure
Maybe given that he has interviewed several times and not received his shot, Jose just isn’t cut out to be a manager. My hope is that he accepts this and sticks around the Cards org as a lifer in the Kissell / Schoendienst mold. Perhaps down the road he could be a stopgap if the Cards are in between managers ala Red in 1990, but hopefully Matheny is successful enough that this would be very far down the road.
Nope.
If Matheny fails and the front office remains intact, they’ll probably still want someone younger. If he fails and the FO is swept clean, they’ll likely look outside the org for a new manager.

I should also have added that the article linked in the main post

I’d like to see Oquendo stay around, too, given his reported skill at working with infielders but I think McGwire is a higher priority to me. I’m interested to see what role Maloney will have on the MLB staff.

I used command (not control) for a reason.
With control representing the ability to avoid walks, and command defined as locating pitches within the zone.
In any event, Boggs already has a spot in the pen, IMO. The latest evaluation (by TLR/Dunc) was that he was a garden-variety RH reliever who would not normally be used in high-leverage situations. He’s the guy who isn’t the closer, isn’t the primary set-up guy, isn’t the long-man, and isn’t a LOOGY or lefty reliever. He’s the other guy. And I’m fine with him still being that guy next year.

Pujols contract offer last year
Do we have clarity on what the Cardinals offered Albert last spring? I’ve read various numbers over the past few weeks…
- 9 years, $198M
- 9 years, $210M
- 9-year extension, $198M
I suppose in the end it doesn’t make that much of a difference, all that matters will be what they’re offering him now. But since recent reports have indicated they might not move much from last year’s offer, I am curious to know what it actually was.
also,
have there been any believable numbers leaked for the Marlins offer? Someone (guay?) posted 9/$234 but in Burwell’s article on the PD today he indicated it was probably a preliminary offer equal or less than the Cards 9/198 (or whatever).
by ArkansasTravs on Nov 16, 2011 11:04 AM EST up reply actions
Yes.
The Marlins’ offer is reportedly 9 years, $225MM. Grant Brisbee says:
The idea of Pujols on the Marlins still hurts the brain, but it might be an idea that we have to get used to.

New CBA
Details of those changes have yet to emerge. But contrary to reports that compensation picks could be eliminated entirely, some clubs are now saying they’ve been told to expect that in the future, teams will only have to give up a first-round draft choice if they sign one of a handful of “elite” free agents.
Under the current system, teams are required to give up a top pick in return for signing all “Type A” free agents, as long as their previous club offers them arbitration. Under the new agreement, the formula for classifying players would change to limit compensation only to a select few stars — i.e., CC Sabathia, but not Grant Balfour.
Am I reading this correctly, that compensation for Type B free agents would be eliminated? If so, I wonder how this would affect—if at all—the PTBNL or money that comes from Toronto to complete the Rasmus trade.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
From what I understand,
the idea wouldn’t be to eliminate the Type Bs, but to make the Type A designation much harder to get. You would still get compensation for the lower tier free agents; there would just be a much much smaller top tier of guys who would force a signing team to actually give up a draft pick.
As for the coming season, which is what I think you’re actually talking about, I don’t think they’re planning on getting rid of the Type Bs, but are trying to reclassify a bunch of the A guys who clearly are going to be hurt by that designation.
I could be way off base, but that’s how the whole situation seems to read to me.
I can do no wrong, for I do not know what it is.
by the red baron on Nov 16, 2011 11:00 AM EST up reply actions
That makes sense to me.
So we would still get a compensatory pick for a Type B. The reconfiguration of the free agent compensatory draft system would be by tightening the definition of Type A.

I could be way off base...
but I cant help but think that limiting the amount of money spent on draft picks and the impending slot singing of amateurs will hurt the cardinals. The cards are almost always in the lower half of the draft, and those ‘harder to sign’ sign guys are less likely to fall deeper in the draft. Haven’t we signed a few guys in the last couple of years who fell due to signability concerns?
by Action Jaxon on Nov 16, 2011 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

I don't remember the details now,
but I figured it up a couple weeks ago. Having one inter-league series going each “series” all year won’t require more interleague games than they’ve been playing. I don’t have time to lay it out now, but will re-do that later.
by ArkansasTravs on Nov 16, 2011 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
four or five
there’s probably some pattern/reason but, iirc, the Cards have played either four or five interleague series each year. If you make the simplifying assumption that all series are three games (I mean all series all year, intra- and interleague) then each team plays 54 series in a year. For a given league, 15 teams each playing 4 interleague series gives 60 interleague series to be played during the year. So, you might need a couple of “interleague weekends” or somesuch where everyone plays interleague (much like current system) but could otherwise cover everything with the one interleague game per day.

Is Ozzie even remotely interested in coaching?
and you should be taken to the woodshed for suggesting Juan Pierre.

Just maybe
Go ahead and throw Jose a bone and make him the bench coach. Bring in the Great Ozzie to coach third, since he hasn’t been around of late. He would bring extra credibility to the staff. Let’s hope that Matheny actually wants to steal a base this year. Maybe bring in Juan Pierre as the CF.

Here's a big thumbs up for Jose, Mac and Dunc
Would like to see them keep the team in place, coming off a WS championship. They deserve a return. If Jose gets a managing offer, he should take it. He’s earned it.
something is happening here but you don't know what it is
