Schumaker has appeared in 7 games in CF.

Looking at his game logs, it appears he’s only started one game in CF in 2011. Or am I reading this wrong?

It's for the switch, which for some reason is important

All we end up doing is burning a potentially good pinch hitter in Skip, although I guess we get one in Jay.

If Jay is pinch hit for the pitcher with the bases loaded and 2 outs, I’d say this was a good move.

by vivaelpujols on Oct 7, 2011 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess this is supposed to be the Lefties + Improved infield defense lineup?

Couldn’t max lefties with Jay without starting Schu at 2nd, so drop Jay, push Schu to OF, and move Punto in to 2nd? Because, since Schu got two hits early in Game 1, it’ll obviously happen again?

TLR lineup logic continues to baffle.

Rams, Cardinals, Bulls. Life is good.

by JStymie on Oct 7, 2011 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

He must have decided that Jay will close the game in center

But having him on the bench gives him the most flexibility when in comes to making late-inning double switches, etc as Schumaker wouldn’t necessarily have to come out of the game when Jay comes in.

by olddomination on Oct 7, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

But couldn't that rationale apply with Skip on the bench, too?

I.e., I can pinch for this pitcher with Skip and replace either Jay or Punto, depending on where we are in the lineup.

I’d rather start and end the game with Jay in center and Punto at second, as a Skip miscue will likely lead to multiple runs, but Tony is going with “his guys”.

I'm more worried about lack of range than miscues.

But I don’t recall, what’s the knock on Skip-the-Outfielder? I thought it was lack of range and weak arm. I recall him being pretty sure-handed.

Schumaker has a decent arm.

the best guess so far is that schumaker is starting over jay based on some small sample size hitting statistics.

this is fucking stupid.

skip has a career .321 wOBA and -10 UZR in CF.

jay has a career .332 wOBA and a career 3 UZR in the OF (over 1590 innings his CF fraction is too small to use).

by a fink on Oct 7, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Skip Schumaker, is that you?

Why do we yell at Schu for sliding head first into first? It slows you down. In that situation, Chris Young went in foot first, which is even slower.

I’m asking for someone to treat it just like first, sprint all the way through the bag and beat the throw. Then you start your turn for third and establish your baseline, get in a rundown, and hope that the runner going from 2nd to 3rd scores too.

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum

Ah, got it. I didn't notice that Young was all that close, or that he slid.

And, yeah! I was sort of like Skip in little leagues, but I played short and would never slide into first. I was too smart for that.

So I was feeling nostalgic and was digging through some old Cardinals memorabilia...

Much of which was left to me by my grandparents. I have boxes full of various Cardinals memories going back at least 50 years, and lots of cool stuff like scorecards from the 60s, team photos and autographs from various decades, all kinds of cards, news paper articles, and more. Three generations of memories, it’s pretty cool — makes you thankful we’ve all had so many years of great baseball to be a part of and share with friends and family.

I canceled my cable.

Because Comcast is the only service here in town, so costs skyrocketed. My cable bill was up to $100 a month for just the TV service, with no movie channels or anything.

I still have cable internet through them (again, only option), and for whatever reason I still get channels 1-25ish, which is pretty much local channels and C-Span. And, for whatever reason, TBS is in the mix.

Rams, Cardinals, Bulls. Life is good.
