The Play, in 4 photos

[Editor's Note: I'm out of pocket this morning, but in lieu of a typical no-content morning thread I thought I'd promote this great set of photos from musial6. Check all the fanposts, while you're at it—there's some great stuff in the recommended section. -danup]

I'd just returned to my seat in the top of the 6th, the Pence plate appearance already in progress. I photographed several shots of Jackson throwing over to first. I decided to focus on Utley/Pujols in anticipation of another pickoff throw, but Jackson went ahead and threw a pitch, so I got Utley leaving with the pitch instead...I stayed with Utley (ignoring the ball in play) and by chance picked up Furcal's throw as Utley rounds second. I then go back to Pujols for the play at first and get him coming off the bag - then was fortunate to get a nice shot of Utley dead meat at third.

Sitting that far up does have it’s advantages, especially when rocking a 70-200mm zoom.

Essentially a sniper tower for photography, you don’t get the detail that you see from the 100s and 200s, but for simple documentary purposes it’s an excellent position.

Nice photos. You captured the moment.

That was just a smart, great baseball play all around – Utley makes 3B on that play probably >90% of the time, but was undone by Pujols’ excellent baseball awareness and execution.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Oct 7, 2011 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

I would agree with you

Watching the play from the stands, I thought Utley was going to make third once I seen the throw go to first. I never expected Pujols to throw to third. Until he stepped off that is.

Grit != flat out sucking.

by Evilfrog on Oct 7, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

It's one of my favorite plays of this year -

I think Utley makes it to 3B rather easily unless (1) Furcal’s throw to Pujols is chest-high, on line, and strong; (2) Albert, seeing Utley, realizes that he has to come off the bag to make the play; and (3) Albert throws a cross-diamond strike to Freese.

I don’t think the play was too risky by Utley, he just got beat on a smart, well-executed play by the Cards (mainly Pujols).

by Willie McGee's Twin on Oct 7, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it would be interesting to see Freese's positioning on the play from start to finish

He obviously had to start moving early. So not only did Albert have to see Utley, he also had to recognize Freese was moving towards 3rd and come off the bag to cut down the throw..all in a couple seconds.

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

What intrigues me is

why would Freese be moving to 3rd at all on a play like this? Except if he thought that Albert was going to get the out at 1st, then try for 3rd. I don’t think that this play is in the Cards optional playbook, or is it? A classic play. I am going to stay up all night (dry) to watch the Brew Crew (2 am start) and then the Cards game. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I feel like this team is actually a more well balanced team than the 2006 WS winners. This is going to be a fun night!

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Oct 7, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

the answer to your question

is because he plays with albert. And if the runner is going to third he should go to third as well.

Grit != flat out sucking.

by Evilfrog on Oct 7, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Freese should be moving towards 3rd because of the runner at 2nd.

Being away from the bag opens the door for the runner to think about taking third.

that and even if he stops at 2B

if the ball gets away, he’s heading to 3B. so be ready for a throw over.

i think it is natural for freese

to move towards 3rd base when he sees a runner moving towards him regardless if there is a play or not. but natural doesnt mean immediate

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

what you could critique utley for

is making a play that would be great against weak defenders (decently high chance of pressuring them into making a bad throw or other error) against strong defenders. As you point out with (1) and (2), he’s running against Furcal’s arm and Pujols’ game awareness—in other words, their respective best defensive skills. It’s a much better play for him if the ball is in shakier hands. Pujols’ arm is more average, but he also gave himself plenty of time to set up a good throw.

What is Corey Patterson doing in Tyler Greene's spot on the 25-man roster?

What is surprising is that Utley’s helmet managed to come off. You would think all that hair gel would stick it on tight.

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I like the premise of the article, but I don't really agree with the arbitrary percentages the author assigns for the likelihood of success.

Also, the author said that there was only a 10-15% chance that Utley would be safe, but this is incorrect. Using the author’s numbers, Utley is out 85-90% of the time only when Pujols comes off the bag early. The odds that Pujols remains on first have to be accounted for in the likelihood that Utley makes it to third. However, I have no idea what those odds are so, unlike the author, I won’t try to come up with them. Having gone back and watched the replays and looked at these pictures, I’m not sure it is even possible to get Utley at third without coming off of first. I also agree with one of the commenters in that Furcal’s throw is extremely underrated on this play. If it wasn’t perfect, then Pujols can’t come off the bag early to make the throw to third. The possibility of a bad throw by Furcal also has to be factored into Utley’s success rate since Utley was rounding second as Furcal was throwing to first. I think the author is underrating both players’ decisions here, though I can’t say for sure. Pujols throws better than most first basemen, but the throw isn’t really the difficult part. I’m not sure many first basemen, if any others at all, would have come off the bag for that and can’t fault Utley for not anticipating it.

by nolesblogger on Oct 7, 2011 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a lot of people saying Utley made an obvious bad move aren't looking at the play correctly.

Especially in saying Pujols didn’t necessarily need to come off the bag. The process of getting the out at first almost assuredly makes Utley safe had Pujols focused on getting Pence out. It’s not just the extra travel time for Pujols’ throw if he’s throwing from first… it’s the extra time on Furcal’s throw + Mang having to hold the catch briefly to assure the out call + Pujols having to shift his weight and footing (on the throw that actually happened, he already had forward momentum) + extra travel time on Pujols’ throw. I don’t see Utley having too hard of a time making up the extra distance during that series of events.

Rams, Cardinals, Bulls. Life is good.

The people at the stands have to account for each cup that is missin.

That’s how they track sales, not by the amount of beer gone. Dude just needed to make sure his count was right, so he didn’t get in trouble at the end of the night. At least, that’s how the minor league team around here does it. Thus, big tip = free refill.

Great snaps. Well done.

I like the leap at first by Pence. You can see his dust almost even with the grass cut. Anyone have a definitive study on running through the bag vs leaping vs diving. I’m amazed how many professionals (Skip included) who leap or dive when the word is always "just run through the bag – it gets you there faster).

SD

by Gibby45 on Oct 7, 2011 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

As to leaping

I would expect there is a value to arriving at full extension (foot gets there well ahead of the center of mass), just as there’s a slight advantage to throwing your chest forward at the finish line of a sprint. Diving involves both sacrificing your propulsion and flinging your center of mass forward, so it’s hard to see where the benefit would be.

What is Corey Patterson doing in Tyler Greene's spot on the 25-man roster?

by Robth on Oct 7, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

the only way diving would get you to the base quicker might be (might) if your first contact with the ground puts your hand on the bag. If you have to slide into the bag, it’s going to be slower.

by ArkansasTravs on Oct 7, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't see why Skippy (or whoever)

doesn’t just test this at Spring Training at the begining of the year.

Just have someone time him from the batter’s box to 1B and have him slide headfirst 5 times and run through the bag 5 times (or however many times over how many days it takes to develop a suitable sample).

Maybe the times are so close it’s a toss-up, maybe running through the bag is better, etc. Then we’ll know for sure.

I agree, but I've seen

the one exception to that rule a couple of times. Picture a situation where the fielder at first has to tag the runner instead of holding his foot on the bag. I saw it in an Orioles game this year … there was a race to the bag and the 1st baseman was in a position where he could not get his foot on the bag so he reached out to tag the runner; except the runner had gone down to slide and came in under the glove.

But I sure wish Skip would cut that crap out.

All the jumps off the bag and the tag to the shoulder make me think “Damn Skip would’ve”

Normally

Wet Mixture
2 packages yeast
2 c. warm water
2 T sugar
-let mixture sit until foamy (really thick foam will form)
-once yeast mix is foamy, add:
2 T oil

Dry Mixture
4 c. flour
1 t salt
-mix
-add wet mixture to dry mixture
-if too soupy, add flour. should be texture of bread dough.
-should form a ball, but not very stiff
-knead 8-10 times
-place in bowl
-let rest

But we are being lazy and buying premade dough balls at Urzi’s on the hill. They’re really good.

what you want to do is take AirTran to Penn Station via NJ Transit

http://www.panynj.gov/airports/ewr-to-from.html

Costs like $12 bucks and its pretty quick, but since you are arriving later in the evening I don’t know how frequently trains will be running. Happy to help if you have more questions.

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I figured it would be simple enough to figure out

But my wife will be exhausted so I would prefer to have a decent idea of what I’m doing ahead of time so she doesn’t have to worry about it.

Ceterum censeo La Russa ire necesse est.

by mattybobo on Oct 7, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Would you just recommend taking a cab from Penn Station?

Something like that would be simple enough. Not gonna worry about taxi money unless it’s exorbitant. The Newark airport website seems to think fares to where I’m going are around 60-ish buck (I think, our hotel is on 92nd street) and it looks like there’s an additional five dollars for going to the state of New York, plus whatever taxes and tip, etc. So that could run up a bit higher than I’d like but would be do-able.

Ceterum censeo La Russa ire necesse est.

by mattybobo on Oct 7, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

92nd street on the upper east or upper west?

if its on the upper west, taking the subway is really easy from penn station to there – you could get on the 2/3 express and only have like 4 stops or something to 96th and broadway.

but if its on the east side, a cab would probably be easiest. probably run you about $15+tip from there

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Ceterum censeo La Russa ire necesse est.

by mattybobo on Oct 7, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm. is it just you and the wife?

depending on how you value convenience, the cab from newark might be worth it.

its probably going to be about $100 if you take a cab the whole way, but its easy and wont take nearly as long. and you dont have to schlep your bags around on the train. Ill try to find a more precise estimate of cost.

train for 2 plus cab once you get there is about $45. but you have to wait outside for a bit, train takes longer, etc.

by all4tookie on Oct 7, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I actually think either one is viable

We will be traveling fairly light, and won’t be bringing the kid. Convenience will be valuable but we have been stretching the budget a tad by going to this wedding in the first place. Thanks for the info, it will help us decide.

I think

that I win the most exotic VEB game watcher award. Now 9:05 pm in Peshawar, Pakistan. I am at the Khyber Club (american compound, only place for beer in town) drinking Sam Adams. Amazingly, on our local cable tv here, they have ESPN. Mostly it is football (European) and South Asia cricket, but all season they have shown Skankee games, or the Nationals, of all things. But they have shown the whole playoffs. Usually I have to watch on mlb.com, if the bandwidth is working. So, I will stoke up here in the club a little longer, and wake up at 2 am (5 pm EST) for the D’Back game, then 5:30 am for the Cards. What a way to start the weekend! I really believe that this team can do it. If not, it has been a great ride! ON-ON!

It depends on where you are

Amazingly, in central Asia (like Kabul and Pakistan, where I have lived 2005-07 and now) ESPN shows baseball. But in Nepal, not. Philippines yes. Once when I lived in Manila, we missed the whole world series. Dispute between the local provider and ESPN on how much they would pay, as far as I understand it. an acquired taste for sure. Have to basically go office to home. A lot of violence going on, but mostly taliban vs government, and locals are the victims, mostly outside of the city. But kidnapping and targeting can happen anytime, which is why it is office to home. Official americans are completely locked down, other organizations don’t even allow staff here. I am the crazy canuck. It is actually fine, until something happens. Karma. At least I found this American club with beer! I go golfing on the weekend at the Peshawar GC, a regulation 6,600 yards from the white tees (old man) and hard for me to break 100 (bad golfer), so it is OK, but definitely lock down people can’t enjoy the links at all. AFL notes
Cardinal pitching prospect Tyler Lyons started for Peoria and struck five of the 12 batters he faced — the best pitching performance so far in the early days of the AFL season. Curiously, among the other seven batters he faced, one of them walked and three got hits — one of which was a home run. Lyons only struck out 19.7% percent of the batters he faced this season as a 23-year-old (i.e. old for the level) in the High-A Florida State League, making this performance more intriguing.

Anniversary is tonight.

Ladies, confirm/deny – canceling the Oceano reservation and taking the wife out to Lester’s or Sportsman’s Park or another sports bar is a bad idea, right?

Sidenote – my wife last night asked me “If the Cardinals win tonight, do they face the Brewers in the World Series?”, so she’s not a baseball fan.

New Motte nickname - The Smoke Monster

I dig the nickname, ‘Sauce’, I do. But…I just don’t think it encapsulates the dude’s on-mound presence.

So, I’ve taken to calling him The Smoke Monster.

I love the phrase “throws smoke” for hard-throwers, so there’s that. And he is a monster. And he does have a beard like that guy who was Jacob’s brother who was the smoke monster on ‘Lost.’

It also seems like the kind of nickname Shannon would give to him, heh heh heh.

This is

a very philosphical, or physical question. Personally, I think that anytime in the 24 hours is acceptable, but perhaps the majority of people do not agree. Depends on the time zone too. While you are asking if it is OK, I have already consumed 8 Sam Adams, now at home for brief respite before the Brew Crew hit the field at 5 EST or so. Enjoy your drinking while I watch dry (no supplier) in the wee hours of the morning. I am feeling so strongly that the Cards lineup is going to hit Halliday well today, and Carp is going to be tough, but that is just the fan talking. What a great fall game!

>> I am feeling so strongly that the Cards lineup is going to hit Halliday well today <<

before or after consuming the 8 Sam Adams?

by jjray on Oct 7, 2011 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

Sam Adams is a pretty benign beer for me, speaking as a drinker in industrial quantities (when available). But of course it is wishful thinking, but since we went on this crazy run in late August, I have felt that this team can do anything. Particularly after the sweep of Brewers, and 3/4 with the Phillies. As I said earlier, I feel that this is a more well rounded team than 2006. Let us see. I wish I had some of the benign SA for the game.

I am

out of my own league! My Sherpa mother-in-law used to serve me a glassful of their moonshine (double or triple distilled corn mash) at 6:30 in the morning with an egg in it, as an attentive sherpa mother in law would. But, the thing is, they keep on pouring it down your throat all day with consummate Sherpa hospitality. I would just keep on pouring it down, trying to be a polite son in law, whereas in fact if you are sherpa, you just leave it there, and the hostess tries to force you to drink it, and you refuse, and everyone is happy, because the hostess has been hospitable, and the guest has tried and failed. But I happily imbibed. I swear that those several days in the 80s when in my innocence (why wasn’t my wife coaching me?) I was drinking that hooch killed my liver. I have never managed to drink hard stuff since, and just stick to beer, albeit in industrial quantities. However, that won’t help me for this game today. All I have in the house is Bass Super Shandy .05%. Yuck!

That will be the plan for Utley and Rollins and Victorino

Ryan Howard will continue to be content with striking out on pitches 4 feet out of the strike zone, however.

Hunter Pence will continue to pretend he’s swinging a battle axe and pound balls into the dirt.

Pujols or not Pujols. That is the question.

For some reason, I can believe Pence actually does pretend to swing a battle axe.

His childish face and gangly body just make him seem like such a goofball.

When he swings, that's just what it looks like to me.

I guess scouts call that a “max effort swing” or something.

I have no idea

I’m just assuming that this is what people mean when they say that: Hunter Pence’s swing.

I would guess that Rob Deer and Matt Stairs also had “max effort swings”.

However, this is the closest thing I could find to what he said. So what he said can be taken with a grain of salt.
