I knew he’d been with StL for a long time (16 years, since 1996, etc., etc.), but that really drives it home.

it’s really the hair (out of style decades earlier) and the logo (they stopped using it a few years later) that make it seem that way

Fisher coming back on a redshirt, Lucas is secretly awesome (and I said that before Saturday), Ebner coming back, Franklin not making 1st year mistakes and HENRY FUCKING JOSEY. Oh and the outside chance at DGB, oh what I would do for DGB.

The Blues are painful. No goal scorer since what, pre-lockout Tkachuk? The sad thing is that they really aren’t that far off from being really good either. I console myself staring at Tarasenko’s KHL stats as a 19 year old in a league that is pretty hard to score in (his numbers so far through are pretty comparable to Malkins back in the day not a thorough study).

quarterfinals are 2 separate sessions

so you need 2 tickets, and have to take a day off as the first session starts at noon. That and the slightly lower quality of games makes it less attractive, imo. But its also way cheaper.

probably depends on the games...

depending on who is left in the tournament will impact the prices. I’ve had good luck buying tickets for the next days’ game outside of MSG when a team that travels well loses (g’town or cuse mainly).

Not sure how expensive the first session of the quarters is (noon/2pm) because I could never go, but they are probably pretty cheap given the time. The night session is cheaper than semis too, but not by a ton.

I imagine the SEC schedulers hope they are playing in '12

Sure makes their job easier with 14 instead of 13. Most of the talk seems to be Mizzou going to the East division which, I guess is about the only realistic solution. The only other option I could think of would be Arkansas, A&M, Mizzou, LSU, the two Mississippi schools and move Vanderbilt to the West then Alabama & Auburn could go to the east together.

It has Game 7 of the '04 NLCS, Suppan vs. Clemens.

It’s a great game but I think Game 6 was equally as great. The walkoff crowd reaction alone may put Game 6 over Game 7.

When i was in the military I was very used to talking to older and younger folks as equals off duty and many times on (obviously had to maintain discipline/military bearing in the workplace), but when I was out and about and tried to talk to older guys, when I was younger, I would usually just get a look like…“and you you whipper snapper are talking to me why?”.

VEB is refreshing and I like it.

riggleman quit on his bosses, not his team

he had issues over the winter and kept working to sort them out
once he gave up on them, he should have quit
lames ducks don;t do well, especially when everyone knows it

he did the right thing, just a bit late
trusting good faith from management was his biggest mistake

what's up VEB

been out of the loop for a couple days cause I was on the east coast of Missouri w/ family. I have a lot of reading to do.

I was at the parking lot of Kilroy’s, two blocks or so from the stadium for Game 7, watching with hundreds (maybe > 1,000+) packed in tight, watching the game on a projection screen (our backs were to the stadium). The broadcast was behind by about 10-15 seconds. A couple times, we’d heard a roar go up from the park when something would happen, and then get to see it on the screen a bit later. (In other words we were nexdef’d the whole time.)

In the third inning, there was a colossal bang behind us, and everyone jumped and turned around, startled, before it dawned on us that Craig must have homered, and There Was Much Rejoicing. Waiting for the next handful of seconds to pass while watching the screen was exquisite. Such an amazing moment.

I think I fucked up my shoulder giving people high fives. Don’t care. Got tix to the stadium for the victory lap yesterday, and that was just joyous. I took a zillion pictures with my phone, and I’m pissed I forgot my actual camera. They were tossing a football around, which was hilariously incongruous. On the third base side of the stadium, on the lower level, there was quite a commotion during some of the interviews, with entire sections standing up en masse and the onfield cameramen racing over. It was pretty obvious to everyone that a squirrel had made an appearance (naturally).

Anyway, see new signature….after that fanpost went up, I decided it would have to be my sig if they won the whole thing. It would have been grossly inappropriate to change it before the WS was decided, and given today’s news, it seems even more fitting.

What? I can't hear you over ALL THE CHAMPAGNE BEING POURED IN MY EARS.

the bonehead Riggleman

would have been at the top of the Cards’ list had he played out the season with the Nationals instead of wigging out and quitting during a hissy fit over not being given a new contract. Forget him. We don’t need any head cases. Boston quit on Francona. That might be the GM’s fault for building a clubhouse full of prima donnas but it does cast a shadow over Francona. Also, there is the issue of his prescription pain medication use. I’d rather not touch it. Maddon is my first choice. I think the contract issues with Tampa can be overcome if Maddon wants the job.

No judgments, I’m an intermittent poster myself. I guess it’s a testament to how huge a figure La Russa has been to the team for the last decade and a half. What a bizarre place to be in as a Cardinals fan, having just won a nobody-could-have-seen-it-coming World Series, saying goodbye to the long, long term manager, and having the status of your franchise player up in the air.

She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. "It’s got a lot of red marks on it," Mozeliak said of his list, which has undergone changes as candidates were either added or removed for various reasons.

His plan is to be the Cardinals' pitching coach next year.

Hasn’t talked to Mo yet.
Depends on wife’s health.
If new manager hire looks like something he might not be comfortable with, might look for something else (sounds as though retirement isn’t in his mind right now)

it also depends on his wife’s situation, depending if she’s healthy enough to make it to Spring Training, thinks he can get along with any manager. He would consider leaving if he doesnt think he and the new manager would get along.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. We didn't allow our children to be whiners

especially in public. I developed “the mean look” early on, and they understood what that meant. I have seen too many children throwing outsized tantrums in stores, and too many parents getting extremely rough with their kids to ever have allowed that kind of stuff from our kids. And every time we saw an example of that with one or both of our children around, we pointed it out to them, and just said, “that will not be you”.

Well, of course.

They’re taught Hochdeutsch very rigorously in school;if they’re speaking Weanerisch around you it’s because they don’t want you to understand. Anyway, they’ll mostly use English (a sort of odd mid-Atlantic English filled with 40-year-old colloquialisms) which just rubs in how much better educated they are.

I actually found the Tirolean I lived in the middle of a lot easier to understand than the northern dialects, because it sounded like German with a Mississippi accent.

Give me a manager that the players have respect for.

I don’t think some minor league manager is going to come in and command respect from Albert, Berkman, Molina, Carp, etc. I think Maddon would be perfect despite his flaws. Tony had some pretty tremendous flaws as well. I realize he didn’t win the 8 W.S. titles everyone thinks he should’ve, but i’ve done a hell of a lot of celebrating while he was in charge. The man was ABSOLUTELY NUTS, but the players played hard for him for the most part. Just give me someone who won’t sink the ship.

This is what drove TLR nuts about JD Drew.

TLR claimed Drew was only giving it 75% because that was still good enought to land his big contracts.

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Oct 31, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Well he could have made more if he tried harder

I doubt Drew hadn’t been trying his hardest, he’s just a Colby-like player (lazy looking in the outfield, draws a lot of walks, strikes out a lot)

Well monetarily, if players make the playoffs they make more money

If they do well, statswise, they make more money down the road.

And just from a basic psychological standpoint, there is a very clear goal each day – win the game. There is no such goal in most jobs. No player wants to do bad.

Secretary of WAR and defense (Tyler Greene Fanclub). PUT TYLER ON THE GREENE.

by vivaelpujols on Oct 31, 2011 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure,

they’re playing for themselves (want to win, want more money), but they’re also playing for their team and their leader. This is impossible to quantify, but I bet having the right manager for a team from a leadership perspective can make a much, much bigger difference than you are suggesting.

RE-SIGN ALBERT PUJOLS!

by a fink on Oct 31, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it makes a much smaller difference than correct in game management and lineups

That could concievable add something like 5 wins to a ballclub. I don’t think that that loyalty towards your manager adds nearly that much.

Secretary of WAR and defense (Tyler Greene Fanclub). PUT TYLER ON THE GREENE.

by vivaelpujols on Oct 31, 2011 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree that good in-game and lineup decisions are important,

and in a typical season, probably more important, but I do think that having a manager you want to play for is important, and oftentimes seasons are decided on the smallest of margins (as we saw this year)

RE-SIGN ALBERT PUJOLS!

by a fink on Oct 31, 2011 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm just saying I'd take the tradeoff

And there doesn’t have to be a tradeoff even. We could hire someone who the players will like (doesn’t have to be some 60 year ex ballplayer) who is also a smart manager.

Of course that’s not going to happen. We’ll probably just use Oquendo – that’s what Pujols would want anyway.

Secretary of WAR and defense (Tyler Greene Fanclub). PUT TYLER ON THE GREENE.

Brendan Ryan

backs this up.

Via Rotoworld
Former Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein said Monday that the club will have an easier time re-signing Albert Pujols if they hire Jose Oquendo as manager.
Oquendo, the Cards’ third base coach, has a very close relationship with many of the Spanish-speaking players in St. Louis. But he also has very little major league managing experience. The Cardinals are expected to interview a number of marquis candidates and Oquendo’s resume might simply fall short. Randy Winn, another former teammate of Pujols’ has a better take: “I know that they are pretty close. They got along really well. But there’s going to be a lot of other factors in play. It’s going to come down to more than a single relationship.”

but, yeah it sucks

it’s not really even calculus except that occasionally, in very specific circumstances you might, maybe be able to use a limit to determine convergence/divergence

but i guess limits are calculus, too

and pretty useful for these things. and then you’ve gotta use l’hopital’s rule fairly often, so maybe i don’t know what i’m talking about, but seriously

L'Hôpital's rule is dead useful

It’s the most useful thing I got out of limits

i remember being very entertained when i learned it

but a little annoyed that it was pretty much the last topic in cal 1 and limits were the first

Hal McCoy wrote today

that La Russa is the first manager to retire after winning a WS. So does that mean this ASG problem has never come up before?
