I'm a Toronto Blue jays fan but love the Cards in the NL, have since the days of Ozzie, Coleman, Herr and McGee.
I think the best way to sign Pujols is for the owner to do his part. The Cards are worth 500 million or so according to Forbes. If the owner agrees to give Albert 1/6th of the team ownership valued at 80 Million as a signing bonus.
You could sign him on a 10 year deal at 13 million a season and the 80M up front ie 1/6th ownership. That type of money up front is worth about 120 Million over ten years . So Albert gets 250M in value while the Cards save on payroll so they are still a winning team.
Its not bad for the owner as his remaining investment is worth alot more with Albert locked up for well below market value, and the Cards don't lose fans if he goes.
So I think its a win for everyone, Albert gets his security doesn't have to go free agent, fans get a hall of famer for 13M a year, MLB doesn't have to deal with Albert just going for the money and that bad PR, and the owner does take the 80 million hit but the franchise value will go up to recover some of the ownership stake loss.
So i think this would be creative way to keep Albert a Cardinal for life!
