No-News-Wednesday Morning Overflow 1/26/11 - Lurkers, Show Yourselves!
Don't scare them off.
We've had a wave of lurkers uncovering themselves into the harsh, surreal light of VEB, so hey hello! Come out and (re)introduce yourselves. Also, since some glossary trends have died, or are ineligible, feel free to inquire as to the meaning of that strange ritual yonder, or what those kids today are calling it these days. if we wait until he is actually a free agent to sign him, there is a really good chance we would end up paying him a lot more money.
i know there are people here who don’t think we should sign him. i think there is a point at which it will cost too much money. but what a freaking disaster it would be if he walks.

okay, a reintroduction
As I’ve already pissed off a couple of people and someone already pissed me off, I’ll start over (Vivaelpujols—not talking about you, btw—, please read my final response to you in our little discussion).
I’ve been reading here for over a year. I’m a lifelong (30 years) cards fan. Ozzie and Willie were my favorites back in the day. I’m interested in sabermetrics, but my understanding is fairly rudimentary. I like to take outside-the-box approaches to things. I think there IS a box in these comments section that maybe doesn’t generally encompass enough lines of thought. The root of sabermetrics is questioning and analysis, not comfort, so I think boundaries need to continue to be pushed. However, I’ll not be doing much of that until/unless I get a deeper understanding of current ideas.
Due to my newbishness, if I am misunderstanding you, please tell me. And be patient. I WANT to understand, and I have no qualms about being wrong if someone can show me why. I also will no longer use any type of sarcasm or mean humor here. I started of doing a bit of this as it seemed, well, when in Rome… No problem with youse all that do, but I don’t want to be mistook.
A bit of background:
I have worked in the wine business, I’ve taught high-school, and now I am staying at home with my young daughter while my wife attends medical school. I am also doing some graduate study in poetry to pass the time.
i like wine.
I didn’t get on base. One time I did (Wednesday) and we scored a run. That shows if I get on base, things can happen - Oilspill
i like wine too
but my wife only likes the IDEA of wine. She’s always saying “let’s get a bottle of wine for this evening.” Then she drinks like a sip or two and says “this doesn’t taste good to me.” I end up drinking the rest of the bottle myself. (which I don’t really mind at all.)
We’ve been through that situation probably 20 times and now she just sticks to rum.

exact same thing as your wife… Let me know if you guys get divorced… Kidding. Have her try fermented cider. It’s fizzy/sweet – much better than wine.

Most wines are something of an acquired taste
like very dark chocolate or coffee.
Many people need to find the right wine and drink it in the right situation (with the right food) and work your way in.
My wife likes her wine on the rocks.
I don’t even ask anymore, I just put ice in it for her. She has, at least, graduated away from only drinking super-sweet wines.
Boog woulda.
by The Continental on Jan 26, 2011 12:55 PM EST up reply actions
I don't need ice for mine.
But it had better be damn cold. My friends can drink it at room temp, to me it tastes like something akin to what piss would be.

Have you tried a variety?
I imagine you have but I know that my tastes in wine are quite limited compared to most. I have never tasted a red wine that I cared for at all (that is, unless you count a rose as a red).
by ArkansasTravs on Jan 26, 2011 11:36 AM EST up reply actions
If you like Rose--
you really aren’t that far from some lighter reds… Eyes closed and at the same temp, it can be tough to tell a heavy rose from a light red.
Yea, but
the roses that I like are the lighter ones. Ah well, the frequency with which I have the opportunity to have a glass of wine with my meal are so few, I don’t think it’s going to bother me that much. I do miss having someone to share the proverbial “loaf of bread, jug of wine” however.
by ArkansasTravs on Jan 26, 2011 11:42 AM EST up reply actions
yeah, it's much harder to drink wine solo...
Since Mrs. a fink is in med school and breast-feeding, she’s pretty dry these days. I turn more to spirits as my evening libation.
Wine comes in jugs?
I thought it only came in boxes.
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.

Yeah
we’ve had a big variety over the years. Her parents are big wine buffs so she samples whenever they try something new. Never found one she likes. I, on the other hand, will drink anything: beer, wine, hard liquor, etc. I don’t care as long as it gets me drunk.

I'm sure you've tried this
But I’ve found success with women who “like the idea of wine” but don’t really enjoy wine by pairing them with a certain meal. There are some wines that just taste a million times better when being drank with a certain type of pasta or pizza or meat as opposed to being drank along.
Also, women really, really like the idea of wine.

Are you my more-life-experienced doppelganger or something? I totally used to stay home with my young daughter while my wife attended medical school! Now I stay home with my young daughter while my wife works as a resident.
I totally have worked in the wine business! Well, I worked part time at Veritas, which is a wine store (and more!) on Clarkson. OK, I washed dishes for them on busy nights when they did wine tasting/dinner once or twice a week. That counts.
I totally used to pass the time by trying (and failing, and giving up because I decided I wasn’t interested in psychology anymore anyway) to get into grad school!
We’re like half twins or something.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Heh...
Yep. Sounds like we went about it backwards. What’s your wife’s specialty?
Sadly, my wife is a first year me student, so we have a long road ahead of us.
She's in pediatrics
She’s at Children’s Hospital now. First year of residency is madness, sheer madness. It’s actually not that bad, since you’ve been through med school already. But it’s still a pretty crazy year.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
very cool
I can’t wait for that period. I feel like we’re stuck for the next 3 years… I know residency will be nuts, but since we’re a bit older than typical med students we’re looking forward to moving to a city where we’ll get to settle down in…
I getcha
It’s also nice to be suddenly making some money instead of just accruing debt. I was making some paltry money in research assistant type jobs while she was still in school, but it was basically to cover child care after the little one was born.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I love Children's Hospital
My first son didn’t have much of a chance at being born after being diagnosed with a rare lung disease. They did surgery 3 months before he was born. Then he had his left lung removed when he was three days old. Now he is a completely normal kid (besides the big dent in his chest)

I’ve looked. They are mostly filled with beat writer wannabes. Like reading a high school version of Joe Strauss. Here at VEB, analysis is elevated to a much higher level – because, you know, some people here rhyme real good. Plus, the profanity on most posts here at VEB is well placed for effect rather than simply used to sound like someone in the Navy. (Go on, use your sarcasm detector on that! Ha.)

grew up in Arkansas listening to KMOX, Vince Coleman was my favorite, remember checking box scores to see whether he or Rickey Henderson in the ML lead for SBs. too often wonder if the leads off of first he used to take just seemed a lot larger than the ones players generally take today or if that’s imagined.

No, I think his leads WERE bigger then
but that was before pitchers went with the slide-step.
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.
a pitcher's move the to plate
shouldn’t keep players from taking similar leads — it’s the pickoff moves that should determine how large of lead to take. if pitchers’ pickoff moves are better, then I understand it. and maybe it’s a become too big of a risk to lose the baserunner, but it sure seems like the extra step or so would really help some of our fast runners who don’t have a lot of success, you know, actually stealing bases.

In fact, English speakers not from the United States seem to have us pegged. But Americans who can do convincing accents of other English-speaking countries seems more rare to me. I might be imagining it.

by El Hombre 05 on Jan 26, 2011 12:22 PM EST up reply actions
The only accent we have is freedom.
Well, there’s Texas too. And Boston, New York, Rhode Island, the South, surfer dudes, Minnesota…
I actually agree with you. I think there are lots of very similar-sounding “accent of no accent” speakers in the U.S., but there are definitely regional accents.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
The "no accent" thing is simply the accent that was chosen decades ago
to be the dialect of television.
actually, the "neutral" american accent originated with the railroads.
The transcontinental railroad lines tended to hire staff from the kansas city area. So, for the first americans who had regular contact with people from outside their region with people who were perceived as american, rather than citizens of a region, they tended to be midwesterners.
To put it another way, before radio and TV, if you traveled from boston to south carolina and heard speech there, you’d call that accent a “south carolina” accent. But if you get on a train and a conductor asks for your ticket, you don’t assume he’s from anywhere in particular. So you register his accent as “american.”
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Buck O'Neil, from "The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America."

ACTUALLY
In Barcelona, they speak Catalan – almost a completely different language. My wife’s family (all native Spanish speakers) went there last year, and couldn’t understand a damn word anyone was saying. They couldn’t even place an order at a restaurant until my wife found an English-speaking waiter.
They’re big on the lisp, though, in Madrid. Kind of pretentious if you ask me.
by peppermartin on Jan 26, 2011 3:26 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I found Catalan really hard to understand
I could decipher some of it when I saw it written out. It’s weird to see cognates that still come from Latin but that aren’t used in the Spanish I learned in school. Also, weird consonant combinations made words seem really strange even though they were very similar to the Castillian equivalent. Like, “personatges” is one word that sticks out in my memory.

Yeah, I've been here a LONG time and I look almost every day
but it’s still tough to keep up. It really does get a lot better when there is actuall baseball going on.
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.
Well this is why,
Y2S made up a handy glossary that sums up most of them.
Y2S, the Wikipedia of VEB
I need signature suggestions. The Boog and the Walrus have both departed. And it's not funny anymore... sniff
a handy glossary
which he hasn’t updated in two years

Lazy Y2S...
It’s always his fault..
I need signature suggestions. The Boog and the Walrus have both departed. And it's not funny anymore... sniff
more or less
I’ve cleared time to do the glossary about 2.5 times, and I got sick, got a family emergency, and then SBN’s search died. little bites of time are no problem, but that big block of meme searching eludes me.
also, it saves me from having to explain “whispering”
would've.

Great, just great
a meme about the article on memes? What level of crazy have we reached?
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.
we may need to upgrade to Y3S huh...
Also I just want to let everyone know that I’m in the best shape of my life. I have been prepping for spring training trying different combinations of wine, beer and/or booze all the while practicing photoshoping different shaved cats. I’m sticking to the fundamentals using eels and what not but may try my hand at other various critters.

not sure the exact definition of lurker
but i have only had 1600 comments (mostly smart-ass) since Oct 2006 and i am pretty confident i have read every post since then and most of the times the threads but i have gotten a little lazy in that aspect. a lot of times i will just scroll down and look for the avatars of people that i know usually either say something funny or insightful.
i am very excited about the season esp the AA season here in Springfield. I dont get to go as many games as i like because i coach in the spring and summer but i will hopefully get to go to more this year and try to post some pictures and videos of players on the Cards and other minor leaguers that come through on other teams.

20. Chicago Cubs
A top-10 system before the Garza trade, the Cubs probably would place more guys in the 101-150 range than any organization except the Royals. They’re loaded with high-floor players who have the potential to be above-average or better big leaguers but aren’t there yet. Considering all the picks they’ve given up to sign free agents, it’s remarkable how strong the system still is after the giant trade with Tampa Bay.

1. Kansas City Royals
About a month or so after Dayton Moore took over as the Royals’ GM, he told me that he was alarmed to find how little pitching inventory he had in his new farm system and that addressing that vacuum would be a major priority for his front office. The phrase “Mission Accomplished” has acquired an ironic connotation of late, but if anyone could use the phrase earnestly to describe his own efforts, it would be Moore, as the Royals have arms coming out of their ears.
That’s particularly impressive when you consider that Kansas City’s top two prospects are bats, and there are some solid position player prospects further down in the system. But what truly sets the Royals apart, and not just this year but from prospect lists of years past, is their stable of left-handed pitchers. Southpaws are harder to find and valued very highly by most front offices, meaning the Royals have promising arms for their own use as well as a hoard for future trades if they find themselves in the running for a playoff spot. They’ve acquired those arms every which way they could — mostly through shrewd drafting (Mike Montgomery in the sandwich round, Chris Dwyer in the fourth, John Lamb in the fifth), but also through trades and on the international front, where they’ve become major players since Moore took over. And Kansas City will add another impact player with the fifth pick in this year’s draft, and probably will graduate only one or two prospects to the majors before we reach 2012. It’s to the credit of Moore, the Royals’ amateur scouting staff (led by J.J. Picollo after two solid drafts by Deric Ladnier after Moore took over), their international scouts and player development that a farm system that was a borderline laughingstock has, inside of five years, turned into the toast of baseball.

14. St. Louis Cardinals
Extremely top-heavy, followed by a lot of extra-guy depth — fifth starters, quality relievers, fourth outfielders, a few of whom will take steps forward and become solid-average big leaguers. A very productive Day 1 in the 2010 draft boosted them.
Blaine Matthew Burns: Albert Pujols' biggest fan (his first words will for sure be "Albert Pujols is RIDICULOUS")
this makes me think they really like Zack Cox as a prospect
otherwise, it’s all Shelby and some really raw pitchers at the top.

but surely the US has had higher single season numbers. We just haven’t been around long enough yet

i mean I'm a big craig fan, i just don't trust uzr in what will likely be less than 200 innings at third.

Lurker confessional...
I read VEB often for the humor and for the media filter about all things Red. Been a die-hard since the 60’s. I do appreciate some elements of sabermetrics, but really just enjoy the beauty of the game. Plus, I probably have dyscalculia.
I’m a recent red wine convert after visiting a couple Tuscan vineyards that paired wines with cheeses. Plus, white wines seem to pickle the brain. I can’t understand the wine reviews, e.g., hints of currants and broken glass.
I want more... More baaaacon!
Jim Gaffigan
The currants, crushed gravel, etc. thing is
sometimes literally true (for example, there is a specific flavor compound that is found in green peppers that is also found in some Cab Franc) and sometimes short-hand for similar flavors so that wine people can understand each other.
I just can't
detect all of those elements when I sniff or taste. Seems a little fishy when they cite about 8 different elements. But I’m open to learning…
I want more... More baaaacon!

I think it can get out of hand, certainly.
And it can become something of a pissing match, plus everyone’s palate is different.
That said, a lot of it IS there. It just takes practice and concentration. Also it helps to pay close attention to ALL flavors, not just wine,
I used to think it was all BS
Then I went wine tasting with my then-girlfriend-now-wife near her home in Portland. Some great wine out there. I decided it wasn’t BS anymore. Now I can actually see what the descriptions are talking about a lot of the time (smell/taste what they are talking about I guess). Same thing for good beer. A good complex beer is a real treat.

Hello
I’m OKCardsfan. I have been lurking around since 05-06. I decided to call it quits posting after I mistakenly mentioned Pete Kozma as a guy the Cardinals should draft. He went to the high school in the city I was living at at the time and I just feel so ashamed. i will ocasionally post stupid things becasue now I am gunshy about the whole posting thing. I am pretty knowledgable about things but I don’t get too caught up in the Sabermetrics, although I do believe it can be helpful. The main reason I keep coing back is that if any sort of breaking news happens, you are the first to know. Plus I like watching arguments that involve fourstick.

dude works at a car dealership, who are subject to dress code. I can understand why they’d want him not wearing a packers tie the day after the game, since it could affect car sales. if he was in a different position where impressions didn’t matter, I could see the uproar.

yeah. his manager cussed him out and said "take it off or your effing fired" and the guy wouldn't do it.
but also, CFIC, the guy said that he would have taken it off if his manager had calmly explained the issue with affecting sales.

All beaches in Italy are owned by the hotels
if you are not a patron of the hotel, you’ll get kicked off that bit of beach. There are sections of ‘free beach’ but they are usually full of crazed italians.
Spanish people tend to be very liberal (even by european standards) expect to see lots of topless women on beaches (for better or worse), and lots of men in very small swimwear (again, for better or worse). Also, many places on the spanish coast are notorious for excessive drinking amongst young people, which leads to all sorts of problems.
But if you want to go somewhere like Barcelona, i can’t reccomend it highly enough, its a fantastic place, just no beaches that are easily accessible if you stay in the city.

My doctor told me it’s safe to combine ibuprofen and tylenol, so if the throat is bad enough it’s 3 ibuprofen every 6 hours and 2 extra strength tylenol every 4 hours for a few days.
Frankly, I don’t think tylenol is worth much, but that combo does seem to help the sore throat a lot.

I’m pretty sure one of my recruiters (for a head hunting agency) is trying to train me into something akin to Pavlov’s dog. As in if I don’t give her a yes before she gets off the phone she moves onto someone else.
That said its been interesting working/interviewing with different agencies because none of them really work the same or have the same level of communication. I “love” job hunting.
I've been doing it for much too long
I tell people I’m retired now.

Job hunting is no fun
And I should have mentioned Civil Engineering, specializing in Land Development.
It gives me more time to do things like lurk on here.
In three states
But it does sometimes come down to the age thing.
Like when one interviewer last year asked me where I saw myself in five years?
With a cold one on a beach somewhere didn’t seem like the right answer!
Nah
The problem is that I can see their viewpoint.
If you can hire someone with virtually the same skillset (in a specific part of the field) who is twenty years younger…why wouldn’t you?
Or, if you’re planning on retireing yourself (as that interviewer probably was) and want someone to replace you, you probably want someone who will be around in five years.
I hope you're the Ozzie Smith of Civil Engineering, specializing in Land Development

Equipment can be over-rated
Much of it is learning, and knowing when to snap the shutter. It takes a lot of practice, because if you have to think about it you’re going to be too late.
With that said, there’s a lot of equipment that just won’t give good results. Like all the folks with their built in flashes blazing away at a night game.
i've gotten some fantastic results before with very modest equipment
but it takes a lot of effort over and over
having good equipment makes things so much easier and the quality of the shots is, who are we kidding, simply superior
timing the shot can only get you so far if your equipment is crappy
by no means have i ever pretended to be a good photographer or a photographer at all so what do i know…
btw, speaking of the flash, i have no idea how anyone that signed autographs at the warmup still has his eyesight

So I guess there's no RB post today?
Hey there, all. Part time lurker, part time poster. At least that’s how I see myself, anyway. I try to be witty and at least interesting. (But it sure is darn hard with you kids these days, with your tweety-pages and your facey-spaces. Don’t you give me that look. I know my lawn has crabgrass and brown spots. I don’t care. When you own your own lawn, then you can comment about mine.)
Anyways, born and raised in STL and also as a Cards fan. It’s probably pretty obvious who my fav. player was, but I grew up watching Ozzie, Willie, and the like, survived that god-awful draught in the 90s, and here we are today. I’ve worked in IT for the last 7 years, currently in the educational sector. I visit here just about daily, as work and time permit.

My first "favorite player" was Wally Moon
Followed by the catcher Hal Smith.
I refused to follow the crowd and pick Musial

lurkers are people that don’t post, once you start posting more than like 5 times you are not a lurker

Or a kind of boat, remember?
Let’s be thorough now.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
in from the cold
since we are coming out of the closet today:
• I have learned a lot about sabery goodness lurking here the last few years, so thanks for that.
• the meme’s and half of danups posts need decoder cheat sheets
• on at least 3 occasions I have incorporated the use of bacon into a nightly dinner after reading too much VEB

I'm a little late to this thread...
but I lurk most of the time… I’ll sometimes post in a game day thread after I have had a few Franklins.
