Story on the Pujols/La Russa/Rasmus mess

by d-dee on Sep 9, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

It has a quote from La Russa I don't remember seeing before, although the gist of it isn't that

shocking. "My favorite team is the team that has a nice mix. You have some veterans and some young guys who are enthusiastic. They don’t get hurt as much. They want to learn. They don’t have all the answers. I enjoy the young players. If you have a totally young club, you’re probably going to be at a competitive disadvantage at some point because you’re learning to lose games. Experience is an equalizer."
Also a quote from Albert about how awesome TLR is, a rehash of run-ins TLR has had with other players (Rolen, Drew, Edmonds – how come nobody mentions Kerry Robinson anymore…?), and more speculation about how it will be hard for the Cards to field a competitive team with so much salary locked up in Holliday, Pujols (assuming he re-signs), and Wainwright and/or Carp.

by BTown Birds fan on Sep 9, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

without reading the story, and just reading the headline

does that mean if larussa retires, pujols is going to retire?

Screw al

I love how he believes that albert can do no wrong. Brendan had a legitimate shot at throwing him out and had Albert vacated the bag to catch the ball there wouldn’t have been a problem. All al seems to do is regurgitate whatever he hears “all Colby tries to do is pull the ball” and so on.

On a side note Albert seems to not give a shit about anything. He may be hurt but at least show some effort.

The Reds lead will be 5 games here pretty soon

Should still be 6, but that asshat Phillips handed yesterday’s game to the Rockies on a silver platter. I am so hoping the Reds trade him in of the offseason.

Here’s another fun stat: Reds have lost 19 of their last 21 against the Rockies. And they’ve played the last 9 games (3-6) with only three healthy outfielders.

that’s like 1 out of every 50 adults. 1 out of 30 if income and affordability is taken into account. 1 out of 20 if you exclude most women. 1 out of 6 if you take out those that don’t like baseball…

I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect 1 out of every 6 well-off baseball fans to be at the park on a given night.

Still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that Wainwright has 10 losses this year,

Not pretty, needless to say

2-3-2-1 against Wolf, Maholm, Lannan, and Wood. The only decent pitcher was the last one, so the offense really shit the bed. On the other hand, Wainwright had a 6 ERA against two of the worse offenses in the NL (Pitt and Wash) during that stretch, so he wasn’t exactly on fire. Still, he obviously deserved better if W/L is supposed to be a meaningful stat….

by BTown Birds fan on Sep 9, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's not a rational thing, and I know it doesn't comport with modern baseball stats

It’s more a gut-level reaction to seeing a guy who’s pitched as well as he has this year losing 10 games (see Roger Clemens, 2005). Doesn’t really mean much, just a weird stat.

Quite an undertaking.

I can see how that would grow into a monster project.

You're doing that?

Good, now I can forget about my feeble attempts to do the same. I’m sure your version will be much better than I could have done.

NL historians

when was the last classic collapse down the stretch? The one that I vaguely remember was several years ago, perhaps 5-10? I know the Mets melted down once, but I am thinking Phillies? I keep on repeating the mantra, Cincinatti will melt down, Cards will rise. Please.

lost a little respect for Cox tonight

just got to the 6th inning, and seeing him IBB Pujols down 5 in the 6th inning was the epitome of cowardice.

At least Rasmus made him pay.

Oh man

I really wish Laroche had been ready for it and crushed the ball. That would have been hilarious.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
