tony has to love this

all the attention is off how terrible this team is playing to his rift with a player. knowing that people are going to side with him over the prima-donna who requests to be dealt has to make tlr smile.

the comps i keep hearing

are jd drew. so we’re looking at deal ras and anderson to the braves for a future cy-yong winner and an immediate 4th/5th starter.

but seriously, it would have to be someone young, cost-controlled, and uber-talented. frankly no team is going to trade that just to get that. unless they have their own raz who needs a change of scenery.

I like how the announcers and media and whatnot

talk about Colby as if he has tons of potential that he’s not realizing, and that he needs to mature so much. the only thing he’s doing wrong this year is that his OBP is not very good, but that doesn’t seem exactly a fair criticism, since a lot of other players have the same problem.

.843 OPS is nothing to complain about really.

its looking like it wont ...

in st. louis.

as a blues fan, colby reminds me of david perron. all the talent in the world and shows flashes of the brilliance, but the media and the coaching staff tell him he needs to grow up. perron wore white skates (a no-no in hockey) to his first camp and was shunned by the vets, benched randomly by his coach and then relegated to the bottom of the lineup. sounds like colby, no?

the blues made a decision to bring in a new coach, and perron flourished. the media (notably radio guy kelly chase) still hammer him, but this year could be his big year. i think colby just needs a change, too.

well if it comes down between colby and larussa

which I don’t even know if that’s what is going on, I’d choose Colby any day of the week. he’s a cornerstone player and his first two seasons have been: 2.3 WAR as a rookie, and second year he has already surpassed that even while missing playing time.

I find this very encouraging, especially considering he gets better after the first year or two at every level of baseball.

but again:

WHY THE FUCK CAN’T THE TEAM KEEP THIS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS?

This is what happens when a team hates itself, and I honestly can’t see Colby & TLR getting past this. One of them has to go this offseason.
I wonder if the team keeps playing like absolutely crap, and finishes the season under .500, will the FO let a manager go when the team has evidently given up on him?

Asked if he liked playing in Saint Louis

He said "I’d rather not answer that if I don’t have to."

When, he could have said something akin to:

“I like it here, I just want to play everyday.”

I can’t blame the kid, because he’s — lets face it: dumb — but he handled those questions the exact opposite way he should have.

He should also just be fucking playing everyday, thanks t-bone.

even if I didn’t have the authority to fire them, I’d tell them to piss off. You don’t need that attitude around. So, from a players perspective, I know exactly where Albert was coming from.

Colby didn’t no comment. When asked “do you like it here?” he answered "I’d rather not answer that if I don’t have to."

That’s a no. I do not like it here.

Meanwhile, they do need him here. He needs to shut up and Tony needs to play him every day. Or just fucking hug it out.

first of all

i don’t like it at my job

second of all, albert probably should have said something to colby. that’s what leaders do. i think albert, matty, waino and carp should all have a sit down with him with tony not present. what didn’t need to happen was for albert, the most respected player in baseball, to publicly call him out.

even if colby didn’t do what he was supposed to do, does that make albert right for doing it? is it unreasonable that i expect more out of albert than i do colby?

But once it’s public I don’t blame the team leader for telling a guy who wants off his team to just shut up and play. That is literally exactly what he needs to do.

Didn't Ludwick

Have a few of these heart to hearts with Tony? I just imagine that every big league manager has to deal with these playing time complaints. I imagine they occasionally hear players say in the heat of the moment that maybe they should trade them.

What generally doesn’t happen is people leaking this stuff out to the media. There is a tendency for this organization to eat their own whenever times get tough, and it should stop.

I find this hilarious

considering the ass kissing of Colby that goes on here.

I, and a few others that have had the balls to say it, have suggested that maybe Colby’s own teammates aren’t huge fans of his either. Slowly, this appears to be the case.

IF we decide to move Colby, we’ll get plenty back for him, I have no doubt. Hell, we might be able to fix two or three problems just by moving him. The biggest issue that would create, is only having Holliday and Jay in the OF next year. I don’t see another player on the roster, or in the system, that I want getting the majority of the remaining “starter” OF at bats.

depends on how you define win

DeRosa – loss
K-Bot – loss
Reyes – loss
Barton – loss
Holliday – depends if the FA signing is attributed to the cost
Rolen for Glaus – started out even, not so good after 2009 no show for Glaus
Edmonds – win
Ludwick – tbd

Right On

Hey good post Stan. I think "ass kissing" might be a little harsh, but it’s accurate. A lot of folks in VEB just love this kid and think he’s headed for the Hall of Fame, if only LaRussa would get out of his way. LOL.
And all the TLR haters have grabbed the Colby thing and run with it, and it’s silly. Colby has a lot of talent yes, but he clearly doesn’t bring his A game to every game and he has seemingly resisted advice from the coaching staff and LaRussa LaRussa doesn’t dig that, and that’s how it should be. How could you want a manager that let shit like that slide? All that having been said, TLR has some downside, and the way the team has played recently, it’s not unreasonable to call for change. The TLR/Colby thing now becomes interesting.
But suddenly Albert adds his voice. If his comments are accurate, Colby’s in a world of shit. Now the TLR/Colby rift is a whole new thing. If Pujols feels this way, it sounds a lot like if you jettison LaRussa for Colby it means you’re saying goodbye to Albert too. Who in the hell wants that?
And by the way, I saw Michael Jordan and Colby is no Michael Jordon.

And Rasmus probably is a douche. The issue is 1 that the team can’t possibly let it get out that Rasmus requested a trade to begin with and 2 it’s TLR’s job to deal with Rasmus being a douche and get him onto the field where you know, he helps the Cardinals win baseball games.

and, like i said earlier, raz did this quietly. he didnt go out into the press and make a big deal out if. he asked for a trade in july. in private.

my feelings over the cards of late

since i left for college in the middle of august, the cards have frankly gone down the crapper. i didn’t realize that the cards could go on a losing streak as bad as they did. frankly, this year’s over, and now it’s on to 2011.

i just saw that raz requested a trade earlier this year. i don’t know if this has to do with his feud with larussa, stress over ther pressure of being in the bigs, or both, but it concerns me. it sounds like some of the players don’t like tony, and that the situation in the clubhouse is getting worse.

i have not heard much in the way of positive cardinals news in the last few weeks, something else that concerns me. now a lot of doubt is creeping in my mind – between albert’s contract, the next manager, free agency, etc. i’m pretty much done with the cards for the year, and i don’t know when i’ll get a good feeling about the team again. it might be spring training before that happens.

Cincy has best record in NL

and they play by far the easiest schedule down the stretch. at SD and at Colo are the only two series against teams over .500. They host the Pirates & dBacks, the two worst road teams in the NL. The other series are at Milwaukee and six games against the Astros.

Philly and Atlanta play each other six times and six each against FLA. SD has games against the Reds, Cards, Dodgers, Giants, Rockies and the Cubbies.

Larussa fluffer John Hadley

is on the air right now on 550 lighting into Rasmus. Amongst many other things, he has said “Screw you. Colby Rasmus” and “Randy Winn has been a more productive outfielder than Rasmus this year.” He likes to talk about batting average and strikeouts a lot more than OBP and SLG today.

Sounds like the marching orders have been sent to marblemouth to destroy the kid, and he is more than willing to do it. Some callers raised decent points, but Hadley was being patently dishonest/biased on the air.

I was only listening because I rode bikes during the game. Needed a break from this shit. Was just trying to find out who won, and got treated to a hatchet job on the Cards flagship.

by Merry CRasmus on Sep 5, 2010 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

I like how he said

“Rasmus is only 13th in OBP among all MLB OFers” as if that was a bad thing. The kid is being straight up railroaded out of town. It’s embarrassing.

This team has absolutely crapped the bed

And John Hadley and the other suckups are devoting their time to drilling the kid who has barely played while Rome burned.

Rasmus might be dumb. He might be an ass. But he’s way down the list if we want to look at where this season went wrong. We don’t want to have a serious introspective look at what the hell just happened on the field. No, let’s just get get hysterical about Brandon Phillips and Colby Rasmus. That’s much more meaningful.

I actually think Colby did pretty well ...

considering that, as the immortal Tom Lehrer put it, “He’s from Georgia and he doesn’t speak the language very well.” As one familiar with his dialect (I grew up twenty miles from his home town), I can assure you that what he said, translated into Colloquial Standard English, was “Guys, it doesn’t matter what I say ‘cause you’re going to make up your own minds what I said, so f**k off and make up your stories without any help from me.”

To me, it looks like a chicken shit way of deflecting a lot of heat. Particularly about his lineup choices in yesterdays game. Nationally televised, and it got more scrutiny than usual so let’s talk about this and Brandon Phillips rather than the fact these guys laid down in August.

And what I read in LaRussa’s statement (hard to say, to be sure, since Strauss gets to pick which juicy bits he puts in) was “Yeah, he asked for a trade. He asked for a trade last year, too. No big deal. He’s still growing up – and he’s making progress.”

And Albert, to whom it was undoubtedly reported that “Colby’s asked for a trade” tout simple, with the usual press indifference to context, blew up because it came across like a rat deserting the sinking ship.

How would people here like to have Joe Strauss playing he-said-she-said with their family quarrels?

A Reds fan's thoughts on the weekend

1. I figured 1 win for the Reds would be acceptable, and that’s how it worked out. The Cardinals HAD to have the sweep for a realistic hope at getting the division title. So I was OK with today’s Reds loss, especially since I have Carpenter on my fantasy team…:)

2. Has La Russa lost his mind? Each of these games were must-win, right? So I don’t care if the lefty was starting for the Reds Saturday, you don’t start Miles, Feliz and Stavinoha in a must-win game. Miles leading off? That’s Dusty-esque managing right there.

3. This whole La Russa-Rasmus drama. From the outsider’s view, it looks like Rasmus is probably a bit immature, and maybe not very coachable, but at the same time, shouldn’t some of the veteran players step up and try to work with him? Or is this all La Russa’s fault. Either way, Cardinal management would be insane to trade Rasmus. It would be difficult to get full value for him since all their dirty laundry is being aired. La Russa and Rasmus need to kiss and make up.

4. Anyway, I hope the Cardinals (especially Carp) do well the rest of the way, but not TOO well…:) I really don’t want the Reds to have to face them in the playoffs.

But he also didn’t make the Cards go 2-8 on the easiest, most important road trip of the year. Thats all team.

It would be a collapse of historic proportions. Check out the latest Baseball Prospectus playoff odds report. Reds are at 98.5 percent to win the division, 99 percent to make the playoffs. Cards are at 1.5 percent to win the division, 7.1 percent to make the playoffs.

Of course, crazy stuff can happen. but I like those odds quite a bit.

You are basing it on ONE year.....

Mr. King of the small sample size argument.

If you feel like Colby will produce like this every year, and you think the “competition” will produce like they have this year, going forward, then you could argue Colby is the 2nd best CF in the game.

Just b/c Colby is having the 3rd best season in the NL for CF’ers, doesn’t make him the 3rd best CF in the NL going forward. It means today, this season, he’s produced the 3rd best results. That is all it means. I personally don’t see any way it continues. I think both is power and walk numbers are a bit inflated. I think his average will probably come up some next year, but I think the power and walks go down. That is MY opinion. But you don’t see me trying to use 5 months of games to call a kid a star.

I personally think there are anywhere from 5-10 CF’s I’d take, if money weren’t an issue (which it isn’t in this discussion), over the next 3-5 years.

by Stanley1 on Sep 5, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He's 24 years old, making the league min, he doesn't look to regress going forward

in fact, it’s very easy to state he’ll only get better…. And, yes, he’s been the 3rd best CFer in the NL THIS YEAR. He is not underproducing.

What more do you want from the kid?

I want him to be a complete player

like we all thought he’d be. Like he was in the minors. Not a slugger. He doesn’t help STL AS MUCH AS HE COULD, by sitting in the 5 hole, striking out and hitting homeruns. He has more potential then that. That is why Tony jumps his ass about taking the shitty approach at the plate that he does so often.

And again, you may not see him regressing, but I do. He was never suppose to be a 25+ HR guy. NEVER. So either everybody missed the boat on his power, or he’s sold out the rest of his game to hit for that power, OR he will regress some. I tend to think the HR rate will go down. Hell, it already has. 15 of his 19 HR’s came in two months. 9 in one month. I’m not stat major, but I do know about throwing out the data that is considered “outliers”.

by Stanley1 on Sep 5, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no idea where you got that from. His biggest tout was always 30/30 potential with + defense.

He constantly took flak from the team, the media (including broadcasters) and the fans for his striking out a lot, who completely overlooked his good qualities and basically ended up being villified and run out of time, despite being one of the all-time Cardinals greats…

The same thing is happening to Rasmus, only part of it is likely being aggravated by TLR’s weird instance on being aggressive at the plate. But only part. Tony isn’t helping, but he’s not the source of the problem.

run out of town, not run out of time (though sort of close).

i'm sure Colby & his dad have some blame in this also

i agree with you that the organization has problems. i had hoped once Walt was gone they would rectify themselves.

both Lankford, Drew & Edmonds are good comparisons to Colby. what do TLR & some fans have against CF’ers?

His agent should be to blame for Colby's quotes today

a good agent would have prepped him for this on his way to the park.

So, if it wasn't for Joe Strauss, today would have just been a nice, seemingly meaningless, win, no?

Probably

Joe Strauss can’t have that, the angel of douche on his left shoulder would not allow it, and the angel of semi-douche on his right shoulder was hungover from last night’s debauchery.

And I was so excited today when I was listening to the game on the radio.

Holliday finally had his "moment " and the Cards won. Then I start reading all this about Colby TLR and Pujols. Just wow. Does the drama ever end? Colby is not good with the media and he probably needs to grow up some. TLR should not be making all these comparisons in the newspaper that Jay has all these baseball smarts that Colby lacks. And then Albert jumps in with both feet. His comments should have been made to Colby and not a reporter.

And this is just this years drama. There are ongoing issues that seem to effect the Cardinals every year: Duncan’s staff vs. the minor league staffs, Jockey vs. Lunhow, TLR vs. Rolen/Kennedy/Edmonds (pick the new player that TLR doesn’t get along with). I have to wonder why.

The answer I come up with is a lack of leadership. There is no shared vision. Each part of the organization is trying to move in its own direction. The most powerful person in the St. Louis Cardinals is the field manager (Tony) and that person is not interested in creating consensus within the organization. You could argue, “why should he?. It’s not his job”. Ok, great. Whose job is it? No one. No one is minding the store. From a business perspective, this is a recipe for disaster.

Ok, I’m kinda ranting here. I am questioning the Cardinal’s business/decision making model. It doesn’t seem to be working well. If there was one person in charge, or if there was agreed to priorities and processes things would not get so dramatic. I know I don’t know anything about running a baseball organization but I have learned a fair amount about running businesses. this isn’t how you do it.

I know this is too long. Sorry

Make fun of Moneyball

and gloat about the Oakland A’s all you want, but there’s no question about that organization’s direction. The A’s would be the Pittsburgh Pirates in that market if that team, from the ownership to the bat boy, didn’t have buy-in to their philosophy.

Imagine instead of a struggling market, a team with a large and devoted fan base and the ability to spend $100 million a year could have that kind of shared goal like the A’s do.

Ah, maybe someday it’ll happen in St. Louis. Maybe it just takes smarter ownership.

just when you thought that was all the drama of this story was over, wait, there's more

from Unistrauss latest updated story

During spring training, Rasmus admitted to problems integrating within the Cardinals clubhouse as a rookie. Pockets of resentment greeted his arrival as the favored child of a player development system eager to produce an impact talent. Last season’s trade of Chris Duncan and the free-agent departure of Rick Ankiel opened additional playing time and helped diminish what Rasmus felt as a negative vibe. At times this year Rasmus has been reminded by uniformed personnel that he is “Luhnow’s baby,” a reference to vice president of amateur scouting and player development Jeff Luhnow.

OK, it’s time to name names. i want to know who says this & who says it right f’ing now. stop hiding behind some weak ass journalistic bullshit code of never revealing sources. if this is not said in a joking manner & he is actually ridiculed about this, give us time, date & names or shut the fuck up.

Yeah, I agree, if there is resentment because of that, a lot of people with the Cardinals need to grow up.

the uniformed personnel

could be Boog for all we know trying to get a good nature dig at Colby. Personally, I am the type of friend who would give a buddy shit like that, but not mean anything by it. And my friends would give it right back. Look at all the shit VEP has gotten about a Penny FX. An outsider could twist that to make is sound terrible.

Strauss has to report it like the clubhouse is ready to break into a knife fight at any moment.

Think about since the World Series

The personal and proffessional embarrassments LaRussa has brought to this team. His roster management and player relationships have cost this team more games than they have helped. Personally he’s had arrests, taken on controversial issues and just been a crumudgeon in general.

This guy is fucking bulletproof. He won’t ever leave.

I wouldn’t mind if they lost like 26 out of these last 28 games, just so the FO would have to make some kind of move.

This off season has the makings to be explosive

The storylines are lining up.
Will Rasmus be traded? Will Tony quit? Will Albert get signed? Will we get a 3rd baseman?

Truthfully reading all the headlines about the La Russa/Rasmus situation throughout the internet…..I can’t help but think the Cards have become the Yankees of the early 80’s with more behind the scenes drama than on the field drama. It’s really becomming sad. The only difference is our owner isn’t the one making headlines. But I do have to wonder what kind of mood Mr. DeWitt is in right now. This is going to be a off season to remember I believe.

I thought this was pretty interesting

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100905&content_id=14320700&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl

first off, Colby must appreciate what it means to be a Cardinal if he sticks around. then there’s this:

“[Rasmus has] been virtually an everyday player,” La Russa said. “He hasn’t been sat because he’s not playing the game correctly. What it’s saying … actually it came about with [my comment about] Jon Jay. Jon Jay has a lot of savvy about his game. The same is true for Colby as it would be for [Allen] Craig, for Brendan Ryan when he first got here, Tyler Greene. You learn how to play the game — when to be aggressive on the bases. You learn what it is to take at-bats according to the scoreboard. That’s all it was. It was nothing personally critical of Colby, which is how it was interpreted. He plays young. He’s learning. Jay has learned.”

doesn’t seem like he controversy is quite as big a deal

"Nah….He’s an infielder. Second base…..I played second base, how hard can it be?"

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Sep 6, 2010 5:15 AM EDT reply actions

although I guess Jon Jay already knows how to be a situational hitter?

the org seems very high on Jay, hope he keeps it up (and stays in right field)

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Sep 6, 2010 5:18 AM EDT up reply actions

i find it very interesting that Craig was thrown under the same bus

through his entire career i’ve never heard anyone say that about him. we’ve all heard his throwing motion is weird & maybe he doesn’t have the best arm for 3rd. but no one has ever said he doesn’t know how to play the game the right way.

this is what pisses me off most about TLR. guys like mini me who have no business being on the team get playing time over guys like Craig simply because he hustles, is full of shit grit & plays the game the right way, whatever the fuck that means. you can ask 100 different GM’s & managers what that means & you’ll get 100 different answers. but only in TLR’s world does that mean players with no talent, ability & productivity get playing over time players who actually possess those attributes.

only you can stop the madness Bill DeWitt Jr

And one more thing!

The media needs to take some blame for making this seem irreconcilable. How many newspapers will you sell tonight?

Did you notice – Strauss is the only baseball writer that doesn’t have a link from the sports section front page at stltoday. You can find his articles in Cardinal Beat or whatever it’s called. You can’t find a link to his tsunami chat thing.

Maybe that’s who we need to get rid of. Let’s blame it all on Straussie. You know he will see this and rant about it during next weeks chat. – They are all out to get him. We could only hope someone could do us that favor. Naw, I guess I don’t hate him that bad. But I do wonder what things would be like if…..

This has not reached the irreconcilable stage.

Colby is not Scott Rolen. TLR has to have learned something from his last few dust-ups with players. Let’s send them to a marriage counselor.
