Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals, Sep 4, 2010 4:10 PM EDT
travis wood v. adam wainwright
3.53 ERA 2.30
3.68 FIP2.91
4.44 xFIP 3.21
4.27 tERA 2.86

hmm, while wood's numbers look good-ish generally, how long do you think he'll keep up the 6.4% HR/FB, in the GABP? and a 29% GB rate? wow.

And....Houston is getting Texas at Minnesota.
Hello Josh Lewin, and someone who like like a cross between Eric Karros and Rick Sutcliffe.
Goold on FB:
Derrick Goold’s Bird Land noticed that Wood hadn’t allowed an extra-base hit to a lefty this season, and in hindsight that should have been the first clue for the Cardinals’ lineup.
Goold again...
Some interesting thoughts from TLR a day after he took umbrage that the team had been called “underachievers,” a label that some within the clubhouse and organization had used …

Stanley1,
next time you defend Aaron Miles, remember that our criticisms of him are partly based on this sort of thing.
We really cant place all the blame on Tony for this
Mo should definitely know better than to waste a roster spot on Aaron F. Miles. In what universe is Miles more useful than Tyler Greene?

Can we just attribute the shittiness of this season on Aaron Miles? Or is that being too simplistic?
well he is a perfect rep of all the major issues that plague the 2010 cards
1. shitty use of resources in keeping old players with marginal value on the roster over better, younger players (t. greene especially)
2. Poor defense
3. Poor approach at the plate (though some are worse than Miles in this regard)
4. Limited offensive skill set in having contact with little to no power
5. No speed

Stav and Jay > Jay and Ras offensively
but i honestly wouldve put Schu > over Miles even though Schu is batting 232 vs lefties and miles is batting like 320 vs lefties
because schu had a good game yesterday and is hitting better…the defense is a wash
Miles did a trick in the dugout and Tony was impressed.
So he inserted him into the lineup.
I believe it involved a frisbee.
by Ghostrider520 on Sep 4, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't care if Stav is a better bet for offense this game.
The season is done already. I don’t give a shit if Stavinoha can luck into another kneeling homer and mean we miss the playoffs by 4 games instead of 5. I want Colby in there getting exposure to tough lefties so he might not be helpless against them in the future.

by guillermozeliak on Sep 4, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Because I love this team.
It matters to me more than it should. I’ve paid my fan dues – I suffered through the shit years of the early 90’s. I felt the pain when we lost despite being up 3-1 to Atlanta in ‘96. It’s suffering when things are like this that differentiates us from those damnable fair-weather, pink cap-wearing fans.
Don’t throw that “If you don’t like it, don’t watch,” bullshit at me. Each and every one of us has the right to question decisions – especially when they’re as stupid as some of the ones we’ve seen this season.

i guess they’d have to implement a basic “ignore” function first. but i think this would be useful.

I don’t care if it is a lefty on the mound. Colby needs to learn to hit them and be given a chance to do so. 7 games back, it’s not like we’re starting Stav in a close pennant race Besdies Stav sucks at everything. Colby would at least provide defense.

I've talked a lot of shit on Chapman and still say he can't start
But in relief, that slider looks like prime Randy.
Not afraid to nitpick
He's got a lot of work to do
Watching his AAA starts, he would lose that slider a lot and it looked nothing like what he’s shown in the big leagues, whether that’s a result of airing it out or a real improvement I have no idea—-he wouldn’t even be able to throw strikes with his fastball at times—-and his changeup blows.
That’s control, slider consistency and possibly a 3rd pitch, which is a lot to expect him to improve on. I wouldn’t expect him to be able to start to begin next year. Maybe down the road, but like I said he has work to do.
Not afraid to nitpick
I think his delivery was worked on in AAA this year, and his ability to throw strikes out of the 'pen could predict similar success in the future.
He may just have learned how to throw strikes and control his release point with better, more compact mechanics. He no longer shows the “inverted W” when he pitches. Randy Johnson didn’t have a third pitch, really – and the changeup looked a lot better in ST if I recall correctly.
I don’t think he’ll be an MLB-level starter next year. I think he’s 2 years away from that, and should stay on the David Price program.
Eh
-I think the strike throwing out of the ‘pen is just "throw 103 down the middle and don’t worry about it" to be honest. It’s not like he was trying to have a 5.3 BB/9 in AAA as a starter, that bad of an issue doesn’t evaporate overnight.
If Chapman can keep this slider as a starter then yeah a changeup becomes much less important, but again he didn’t have this slider when he was a starter—-some guy’s stuff jumps up more than it “should” when they get to air it out. I mean he was basically a 1.5 pitch pitcher in the 3-4 games I saw when he was starting, he had zero confidence in his changeup (and rightfully so) and the slider got slurvy on him on top of losing location with it.
Not afraid to nitpick
Well, I think he's had time to work on it I guess is my point.
The Reds want him to start. Jocketty understands that he gets way more value if Chapman can put it together as a starter. They’ve gotta be hoping this bullpen stint has taught Chapman a little bit of control as he looks to get back to starting next year. He doesn’t need to start at the beginning of next season, but I bet he’ll be able to contribute as a starter at some point in the soon.
Oh he has to be a starter to justify that contract
But I’m just saying I don’t see it being realistic in the short term. I’d be very surprised if he’d be really ready before September of next year at the earliest.
Not afraid to nitpick
You can sorta see the flaws in this tiny little sample size
Basically every pitch he’s thrown he’s left it arm side. Of course when you are 99-103 these things matter less.

I was thinking it's straight as a string
But 103 mph pitches probably don’t even have time to really get movement. Brooks PITCHf/x has it -5 horizontal and +8.5 vertical, which is really straight.
Not afraid to nitpick
Man, Chapman was getting squeezed REAL bad, apparently.
Doesn’t that indicate that the fastball is moving 3-5 inches?
Nah
The average horizontal movement on a fastball is something like 6-8 inches armside horizontal and I think about +9 inches vertically (though more/less is definitely not necessarily better vertically). But I mean the guy is averaging 100 mph so it doesn’t really matter.

wtf
he’s been so good all year

well sort of better
but still not a good fielder
he is playing the last position he can possible play
it’s dh after this
have i mentioned i hate his contract?
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

how is "still not a good fielder"?
he drastically improved his defense this year.
his only errors / misplays, save literally 2 the rest of year, have come in the last two weeks.

"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
i said he's better
that doesn’t make him good
where else on the field do you think he could play?
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going
...to DFA TLR
oh, so now all the fielders can play each other's positions
where the hell did I ever say that?
answer my question, how is he not a good fielder? or are you just going to throw out hypotheticals for positions he has never played and never will?
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
more specifically
what other outfield position would you feel good about him playing?
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

still not answering my question
next!

"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
how do you want it answered?
either he is or isn’t a guy you’d be happy to see playing other outfield positions?
that he is rated x, y, z by fielding metrics for his position, doesn’t mean too much to me
so, he’s as good as or better than others stuck in left field doesn’t change a anything
just watch him out there,
you can be an upper level left fielder and not be a great fielder because many teams take the same approach, trying to get passable defense and lots of offense from left field
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

I try to leave a thread when my only response is to re-paste the contents of the thread.

and he said, well, if there’s an earthquake, and the other team is swallowed up by a crevasse, we would win by forfeit.

Stavinoha has been terrible this year and has no talent against any MLB pitcher
Except for a single swing he took off of the corpse of Trevor Hoffman, he would be in AA.
Not afraid to nitpick
if we had lost that game, maybe we would've won this game
and every game FAM started. Imagine that!

Silver lining
It’s very disappointing to have such great talent on one end of the roster and miss the playoffs by a country mile. I mean…Wainwright, Carpenter, Jaime Garcia plus Pujols, Holiday, Ludwick (fuck), and Colby…and we’re 8 games out (and falling fast)?
Perhaps this season will allow us to get a new field manager, however.
One that won’t START guys like Aaron Miles, Nick Stavinoha, and Pedro Feliz for any reason, let alone in one of the most important games of the year.
One that won’t bring in pitchers like MacDougal in any game that is even remotely still on the line.
One that won’t sit players who have no business sitting (Colby, Ludwick, etc) and play bullshit psychological games with the talent for some ridiculous reason.
One that won’t repeatedly and predictably get into pointless personality wars with the players to prove some ridiculous ego-driven point.
One that won’t take time off during the busy season to drag our star player to a highly controversial and polarizing political rally immediately pissing off approximately half of the team’s fan base while his team, as Bissinger so aptly put it, “is circling the drain.”
One that won’t start play Felipe Lopez anywhere on the left side of the infield.
And, finally, one that won’t (I can only presume) use his “legendary” status to browbeat our new GM into adding washed-up, worthless castoffs like Aaron Miles, Pedro Feliz, and Jeff Suppan to the roster when we have better options on the farm.
In short, a field manager that won’t squander a golden opportunity with a once-in-a-lifetime group of players like Pujols, Wainwright, Carpenter, and the others with ridiculous, indefensible lineup construction and inexcusable on-the-field moves.
Can we PLEASE get a new field manager now, Mr. DeWitt?

Many sportswriters
have supported their cases with less. For example, if the Cards were 33-26 in those games, or better, you can be damned sure it would be used for positive support.
I’m not saying it’s the best approach, their performance is whatever it is, but go ahead and fight fire with fire without guilt.
