Don't kill yourself

Just switch your attention to a team that deserves it — the Memphis Redbirds are in a deadlock tie with the Iowa Cubs with a four-game series between the two teams in Des Moines. If they split, Memphis gets into the playoffs since they own the tiebreaker.

The thing that sucks is that this series isn’t televised, just available through pixelated, blocky, buffering MiLB TV.

So forget about the big league team and its inevitable cockups. The AAA team is worth rooting for, on their own level.

Why does everybody think.....

That Greene and Descalso would come up and immediately out-produce those 4 guys? I just don’t get it. Not every that puts up decent AAA numbers transitions well to the majors. And not everybody that does transition well to the majors, does it in their first season or even two. These guys aren’t blue chip prospects. The only reason they even show up on any prospect list is b/c they should be able to provide at least a bench bat at the ML level. Not really b/c anybody thinks they’d start.

The funny thing is, every year players like that stay in AAA, then get released or traded. And the majority of the time, those guys get picked up by another squad, and either given ML time in which they don’t produce much, or get sent directly to AAA where they play for that team.

Who is the last AAA guy that the fans wanted called up, and that STL had room for, that went elsewhere and contributed significantly, immediately? That has to be a pretty small list.

I think it's a reaction

to the stubborn pursuit of Proven Veterans™ this manager and GM insist upon, when you have a Memphis team battling for the Pacific Coast League playoffs.

Plus, if young players are going to succeed at all, whether right away or in the long term, you have to have a manager predisposed to give them a chance, and to support and encourage them through the rough, learning times they inevitably encounter.

LaRussa is not that manager. It’s always the young players ending up in his doghouse, never his Proven Veterans™.

So, if you’re going to maintain your doubts about AAA or AA players, then surely you must support the decision tree grown from a mindset that Proven Veterans™ are the answer, and that AAA players are good for trading for more Proven Veterans™ and not much else.

LaRussa is not that manager. It’s always the young players ending up in his doghouse, never his Proven Veterans™.

I just don’t completely agree with that.

Freese won the starting 3B job as a rookie. Garcia won a spot in the rotation as a rookie. We’ve had plenty of rookies over the years in and out of the pen. Raz got significant playing time last year as a rookie. Greene has played quite a bit when he’s been on the roster. Tony has played Anderson more than I thought he would, but I do understand that a lot of that was out of his control.

And Rolen is a vet that got into his doghouse as well.

Make no mistake about it, TLR probably isn’t the easiest manager to play for if you are a young guy. No manager is perfect. Why bring in a manager that relates to young guys, but can’t manage a rotation, or that pisses off the vets? It’s two fold.

Tyler Greene's 2010 line:

.265/.359/.412/.771 (.347 wOBA)

He has outperformed them in his admittedly limited exposure this season. That being said, watching Greene from last year to this year in the minors, he looks like a different player. Much like Jon Jay before his call-up. What’s more, take another look at the wOBA for Skip, Miles, Lopez, and Ryan. It would take very little to out-hit each of them and there is little doubt that he could outfield Skip, Miles, and Lopez wile out-hitting each, as well.

That's not the issue
Who is the last AAA guy that the fans wanted called up, and that STL had room for, that went elsewhere and contributed significantly, immediately? That has to be a pretty small list.

When’s the last time the shitty veteran who got PT actually turned out to be a better option? Dick Ankiel took helpless PA after helpless PA away from an OBVIOUSLY better Rasmus last year. Cesar Izturis got to rock a .280 wOBA when Ryan was basically doing the same…..except he had actual upside beyond just 2008. Same with Miguel Cairo getting PAs in 2007 over Ryan when Ryan was actually hitting pretty damn well.

And now we get Miles taking PAs from Greene who is a better hitter and a better defender at SS than Miles is at 2B and is a faster runner. I don’t think Greene is really that great. In fact there’s a reasonable chance that he is about as bad as Miles—-but that’s his downside—-if the seeming improvements he has made are for real? He’s a legitimate starting MIF option for the next 4-5 years. But we don’t want to see if that’s for real or not because Aaron Miles can fluke into being just a bad player and not the worst in the big leagues for 100some PAs?

Not afraid to nitpick

Schumaker has actually returned to form offensively since the break.

It’s his defense that makes me cringe. I don’t think that Descalso could out hit him at the big league level right now, but he definitely would be a fucking upgrade over Pedro Feliz at 3B.

From a recent blog post

by Joe Posnanski:

This has nothing to do with anything … but one unrelated Twitter point I made is that by the end of the season, Albert Pujols will have more homers than Babe Ruth, more RBIs than Henry Aaron, more runs than Rickey Henderson and more hits than Pete Rose at age 30. This, of course, led several people to make the point that Pujols is not REALLY 30 years old.

And so I have to say the Pujols age discussion is pretty uninteresting to me. People have been saying Pujols was older than his age since his high school days (when it actually might have mattered). He says he’s not older. So there you go in a he-said, she-said world. But for the sake of argument, let’s say he’s not 30. Maybe he’s 32. Maybe he’s 34. Who cares? He’s done all this in 10 years — NOBODY could argue that point. He played only one year at Maple Woods community college, and only one year in the minor leagues which means he made one of the fastest approaches to the big leagues ever — NOBODY could argue that point either. The argument can be made that he’s had the best first decade of any player in baseball history, and it doesn’t matter if he’s A HUNDRED years old. And, by the way, his consistent performance is making a case. His numbers certainly don’t seem to be aging too quickly.

What’s everyone’s opinion of the whole “I don’t sign for cubs fans.” To me, you’ve got a kid that likes you as a ballplayer, and just because he’s a cubs fan, you’re an ass to him? Sometimes these ballplayers heads get so big figuratively and in Votto’s case literally.

I feel sorry for the young Cubs fans

They don’t have any idea what they’re signing up for. Most likely, they have Cubs fan parents that haven’t properly educated their kids about what pain their life decisions have caused them. I grew up in Central Illinois, so I’ve seen this tragedy repeat itself over and over again.

As far as Votto personally, he definitely seems to take that a little too far, but I don’t have a big problem with him other than he hits the heck out of the ball too often for my liking.

But, his fielding is so bad that I think Greene stands a good chance at being a better all-around player than him going forward.

I wouldn't mind Greene being the 2010 utility infielder.

His defense at second, short, and third would be average-to-above-average and I think his bat might be, as well. Greene playing second base against LHP would be a nice platoon.

I wouldn’t mind Greene and Ryan competing for SS, and the loser of that battle being utility. If Ryan can improve his hitting a couple notches, then he’s golden, but I think Greene is good enough insurance against the possibility he can’t.

I agree.

I don’t understand why we did not use Greene more at the major-league level earlier in the season. I also don’t understand why Lopez would ever start at short over Ryan, or, if we are not going to play Ryan, why we would not call Greene up and play him instead of Lopez.

About the whole balls thing

While the Cardinals were the only ones to complain, I think it spoke larger volumes when John Smoltz complained about them last year. If Jaime said something, you’d say “oh shut up rook,” but when a guy who has been around for 20 years says they are the worst he’s ever used, I think he may be on to something.

by CarpIsMyManCrush on Sep 3, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you find it funny...

…that Smoltz pitched in the NL for years, and never once complained about the balls in Cincy until he joine the Cardinals?

They complain about Bronson Arroyo and say he is using an illegal substance. Albert Pujols complains about Nick Masset pumping his fist after getting an important double play. Tony Larussa complains about having to play a game after a long rain delay. Brendan Ryan complains about a wet glove.

there was a whole thing here and there both

a while back when we lost to the rockies in the worst way possible and they lost to i think the phillies several times, about not going over and kicking someone when he’s down

but we are 8 games back, wtf? if that’s not the very definition of down, then i don’t know what is..

by jd is legend on Sep 3, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's be realistic:

If the Cardinals sweep the Reds, they will still be 5 games out of first place. If the Reds play .600 baseball the rest of the way (as they’ve played all year), the Cardinals would have to play .750 baseball to catch them. The odds of that are about 15-1 I’d guesstimate, looking at the schedule.

Better to go to the casino and bet a Hard 8 at the Craps table than to be betting on the Cardinals to win the division with four replacement level players in the lineup every day.

I’ve all but conceded the division to you guys, I’m not hoping we catch fire and make a run at the wild card.

For the past several years,

the way it has worked is when the gates first open (or, now that I think about it, maybe shortly after) they open the gate in the wall next to the Cards’ dugout and everyone with a camera is allowed to go on the track which is roped off from the rest of the field. Then, the players & coaches take a walking lap, usually in groups of two or three, around the edge of the grass while everyone takes their pictures. A few do autographs, but it’s so busy/quick they can’t do that for everyone. If the track/field is wet, they don’t let you on the track and you have to stay in the first couple of rows of the seats.

Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan has been suspended for eight games for a series of recent incidents, including his role in a benches-clearing brawl Wednesday against the Florida Marlins.

In its announcement Friday, Major League Baseball cited the following incidents in its decision to suspend Morgan:

• Aug. 28 at home: Morgan unnecessarily ran into St. Louis Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson in the bottom of the eighth.

• Aug. 31 at the Marlins: Morgan directed inappropriate comments toward fans during the 10th inning.

• Wednesday at Florida: Morgan charged the mound in the top of the sixth inning, fought during the ensuing benches-clearing incident and directed inappropriate gestures and comments towards the fans as he left the field.

The eight-game ban is is in addition to the seven-game suspension and undisclosed fine issued to Morgan for his inappropriate actions in an Aug. 21 game at Philadelphia. Morgan has appealed the suspension.

I need to see, but he makes me nervous

He IS a fastball/slider pitcher who throws extremely hard and whose arm action and timing is at best borderline, which is NOT good.

Ask me Monday.

by thepainguy on Sep 3, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The Reds worked on his mechanics in AAA

Supposedly, Chapman’s a lot more compact and smooth in his delivery, which does look pretty effortless considering he’s throwing 102-103.

In his first two appearance, the slowest fastball was 98….his first pitch both nights.

A factor in Chapman's favor

There’s not a lot of mileage on the arm. He became a pitcher just 4 years ago, so he wasn’t blowing it out with heavy innings when he was 14, 15, 16.

by RiverRat on Sep 3, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh

Having watched a number of the AAA starts, he’s got a lot of work to do to be a starter. The slider comes and goes and didn’t look anything like the 88 mph beast he’s shown so far in relief. Maybe that’s a real change or maybe it’s just him being able to air it out I don’t know. And then he loses fastball control with regularity, which is something no big league starter can do—-let alone maintain command. And then his changeup blows, though if the slider is as good as it’s been so far he could probably get away with being a 2.5 pitch pitcher—-but if the slider is what he was showing earlier in the year, they’d better leave him at AAA to throw a bunch of changeups.

So that’s control, slider consistency and possibly a 3rd pitch…..that’s a lot IMO.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Sep 3, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

His timing actually looks WORSE to me

I have seen some pics of him pitching for Cuba and he doesn’t look bad.1

In general, trying to get more velocity out of a guy is a BAD idea.

1 It’s very possible to help a guy throw harder, but in general using those tricks will take years off of an arm. Just ask Mark Prior and Stephen Strasburg.

by thepainguy on Sep 3, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It was Riggleman, and thankfully he hasn’t done it sin…oh, sorry Washington.

(Joking. Wood was ridden hard in high school and Riggleman was sick about what happened to Wood under his watch. And, he’s not at fault with Strasburg.)

Enjoying this thread

A few tidbits I’d like to share…

1. This is NOT the first time the Reds haven’t been bad in 20 years, nor is this their “most important series” in 20 years. In 1994, they had the best record in the division when the strike hit. In 1995, they won the division, beat the Dodgers in the NLDS, then fell apart against the Braves in the NLCS (Reggie Sanders nightmares). In 1999, the Reds lost a one-game playoff to the Mets for the wild card spot. No they haven’t been good recently, I agree, but it’s been less than 20 years.

2. A Cardinals fan friend of mine blames an unqualified hitting coach, Mark McGwire, for the Cards failures this season. What does everyone think?

3. Since May 3, the Reds have the best record in the NL Central….2nd place? The Astros. Cards have 4th-best record in that time-frame.

4. I will agree that the Reds will have trouble in the playoffs. They need a hammer starting pitcher. If they had been able to get Cliff Lee, I would have liked their situation a lot better. Although the bullpen has been lights out recently, and Chapman looks like he’ll provide a big boost. Of course, I’m just enjoying the fact that the Reds are likely to be in the playoffs for a change. Losing makes you appreciate winning that much more.

5. I agree that Wainwright, Carp and Garcia are all better than any Reds starting pitcher….but as we’re finding out, stud starting pitching can only go so far when your bullpen is mediocre, and you’re playing the likes of Pedro Feliz, Brendan Ryan, and Skippy, on a regular basis, or Aaron Miles at all.

6. Obviously, I’d love for the Reds to sweep the Cards this weekend, but I’ll be just fine with taking 1 out of 3….still would be a 7-game lead.

7. Barring injuries, the Reds will NOT go back to being bad next season….they have too much young talent and too much pitching depth.

8. Oh, and as a response to the most recent comment. I don’t care what happens to Chapman in the future…if he helps the Reds win the World Series, then he can have TJ surgery next season for all I care. Flags fly forever. Dusty has MANY faults as a manager, but he’s gotten a bit of a bad rap over the whole Prior/Wood thing. The Nats were being extra careful with Strasburg and look how that turned out.

I'd like to blame McGwire but there's little evidence of correlation for hitting coaches

unless it’s Larussa who is telling the hitting coach to tell the players to “be aggressive”. just not smart.

Obviously I can't stand La Russa

but I’d still rather have him than Dusty is my manager. Trust me, the Reds are winning in spite of Dusty this season. Other than the players, the biggest reason for the Reds success is Walt Jocketty. He did an excellent job of Dusty-proofing the roster….he purged the club of the Corey Patterson, Willy Taveras and Darnell McDonald types.

A couple answers.

#2. It’s not McGwire fault..

#3. The difference is getting it done in the division. Removing H2H, Cincy is 34-12 while St. Louis is 21-24.

Yep Reds don't need to beat the Cards

If the Cards can’t beat the bottom-feeders. Colin Cowturd was dissing the Reds again today, saying how they “pad their record against bad teams.” Ummm, isn’t that what good teams are supposed to do? Beat the teams that are worse than them. Reds have done a better job of that then the Cardinals.

Has their been any discussion here of the wisdom of LaRussa moving the rotation around to save his big three for the Reds in both of these last two series? Seems like he’s putting all his eggs in one basket to me.

thanks for being civil

I don’t think this is McGwire’s fault. But I’m not really qualified to judge that.

We here are all well aware the Cardinals record everywhere has been mediocre after their outstanding start and the Cardinals have a consistent history of winning in the division. Not this year.

It doesn’t matter if the Cards sweep Cincy (which I don’t think will happen), they are still toast. I think they were expecting help in august or september and it didin’t happen.

Barring injuries, hahahahaha, this season would be very different without all the Cardinal injuries.

Dusty is one of my least liked managers. He creates an us against them mentality that comes to backfire on his clubs. Hopefully Jocketty can keep that from happening in Cincy.

Good luck.

All the Cardinals injuries?

What key injuries have the Cardinals had? 6 of your guys (not counting Feliz) have played at least 110 games. Your top 3 starting pitchers have been healthy. Am I forgetting a major contributor? Or have a lot of guys played hurt?

Yes, there’s Freese, Lohse and Penny. But counting on Brad Penny to stay healthy is foolish to begin with. The Reds had injuries to Harang, Bailey and Cabrera. Have either the Reds or Cardinals suffered more or less injuries than the average MLB team?

I should have said “barring a major injury,” I guess.

I think a lot of people link Yadi’s overexposure to Larue’s inadequacy, but I think that’s mostly just due to the pitchers insisting that they have the best defensive catcher in baseball catching for them, not that Larue is a bad catcher. IMO the Freese

injury has been the biggest. If we could have had a fairly average producer in the lineup every day at 3B, a lot of our weaknesses wouldn’t have been exposed nearly as bad. Lopez would have been part of a 3 man middle infield. We wouldn’t have Feliz. We likely wouldn’t have Aaron Miles on the team. The Penny and Lohse injuries netted us Suppan (which wasn’t a terrible move IMO) but also made the Westbrook trade more of a necessity, and now we don’t have Ludwick.

Penny, though is out for the season. He’s actually been pretty durable for his career, including 30 starts last year, so it wasn’t unreasonable to count on him.

Hey Reds' fan post that is actually cool!

2. No. Hitting coaches don’t really do that much unless it’s just a blatantly horrible philosophy. It was a possibility for Ryan/Skip/etc to fall off a cliff, they just kinda all happened to do so in the same year. I wouldn’t expect that to remain the same next year.

7. I don’t think they’ll be bad, but I think they’ve gotten several career years out of players that aren’t likely to repeat. Votto is .030 points over his wOBA, same with Hanigan/Hernandez, this is basically as good as you can possibly expect Rolen to play and god knows what happens with his shoulder on a year to year basis—-literally the only player that you could say isn’t meeting expectations/ZiPS RoS projections is Orlando Cabrera and he’s a 36 year old SS anyway. Even Miguel Cairo is managing to be productive. On the pitching side of it, every pitcher has a >4.3 xFIP so while yeah there’s depth, there isn’t anyone you can really guarantee will be better than a #3 next year. This is all on top of the Reds exceeding the 3rd order wins by 7, the most in the big leagues. I look at the roster and still don’t see better than an 85 win team as an expectation, though there’s obviously some upside with say Bruce/Votto repeating/Chapman/Volquez.

I agree the Reds have overachieved in some areas this season

I was hoping they may challenge for a wild card…85 wins was the max I was thinking too. But there is definitely some upside with the younger players. Votto should stay consistent….Bruce and Stubbs can improve.

I am concerned about Rolen though. I don’t expect him to be this healthy next season, and his being hurt is biggest thing that can hurt the Reds (and yes I’m counting Votto there). He makes the team so much better. The Reds need to get a better 3B backup for next season, because counting on a repeat from Cairo is foolish, and Juan Francisco is terrible defensively.

Well we're 3 years and 1300 PAs in with Bruce and he's at .336 wOBA career and .347 this year

Yeah he’s young so I believe the .350ish more than the .336 and there’s upside, but I don’t know how much higher expectations should be vs. what he’s done this year.

As for Votto, “consistent” yeah, but I’d wager he’s not gonna touch .440 wOBA again. A lot of guys have monster (single) years. Pujols is the exception not the rule.

I think Stubbs gets worse before he gets better. He strikes out a ton, doesn’t have crazy power and doesn’t walk that much. 72% contact on swings, .170 ISO and a 8% walk rate is not a good combination. He’s underperformed his tools all the way back to his days at Texas. That’s not to say he can’t be a useful MLB player, but quite frankly I don’t think he’s very good.

My answers (jd's opinions only represent himself, not VEB)

I think the answer to 2 can be found in 5. We’re giving Pedro Feliz, Aaron Miles, and Nick Stavinoha PAs this season. We’re letting Mike MacDougal and Jeff Suppan pitch (the latter kinda out of necessity). Sometimes it feels like half of our 25-man is filled with 25th men. Hopefully, TLR will ride off into the sunset and Mo adopts a new roster management strategy.

If he pitches Sat or Sun, or later tonight, I should be able to get some with my camera.

Looking forward to this weekend. The tension should be there but hopefully it just creates exciting baseball and not more hatred.

Even with the Reds playing great baseball, and the Cardinals slumping, the big three of Garcia, Wainwright, and Carp scares the shit out of me. If we avoid the sweep I will be ecstatic.

Hopefully this budding rivalry is the start of division battles in the years to come and not just a one year thing.

I seem to remember

All of the VEB people gettng run off of RR after the sweep a couple of weeks ago. Somehow, now that the Cards are 8 back, Reds fans have decided that it’s time for there to be discussion.

I don’t understand.

by thegodfather on Sep 3, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't post a lot but I've made a few comments on here before with questions and what not.

and when the whole “board war” went down I was one on RR telling people to not be fucking stupid.

by blark0202 on Sep 3, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone wants to be stupid right now.

But if you are going to hang out over here, be very nice. In fact, truthfully, whatever you say is probably going to piss someone off. We all have different hot buttons.

you started out fine, but you are devolving

I don’t think Reds fans should be banned from the site or anything like that.

I don’t think it is wise to be making comments like you have cesar without expecting backlash. I admit, I am extra senstive right now.

The other dude's first comment was "Votto > Pujols...discuss"

That’s trolling. cesar’s first comment was rec-worthy, and quite reasonable. I don’t expect to see him turn troll, and if he does, it will be handled accordingly.

I’d hate to see the day VEB wasn’t welcome to fans of other teams.

you know what's utterly ridiculous?

not in a Pujols way of course…

but the Reds fans and little Brandon getting pissed off about Carpenter asking for different baseballs to use. isn’t that just a part of the game? the pitcher gets used to a certain type of conditioning for the ball from other ballparks, asks for something similar. and this starts a goddamn controversy? it’s just dumb.
