Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

2010 number 5 disappointment

The St. Louis Cardinals have gone their entire season without a decent number five pitcher. With names including Adam Ottavino, P.J Walters, and Blake Hawksworth to names like Jeff Suppan and the infamous Kyle Lohse (not in a good way). What do these pitches have in common? Well their ERA's range from 4.90 to 8.36 which is the five worst ERA's for pitchers with any games played in the 2010 St. Louis roster. If that isnt enough to persuade you to understand that the Redbirds either need another guy on the rubber or the old 4 man rotation will have to come into effect, these five Cardinals have a combined record of 11-25, now if you think this five spot isnt bringing down the house on top of St. Louis I would love to hear it.

I would like to focus on Kyle Lohse for a second before I make a wrap. Well this year starting Cards pitcher Kyle Lohse has only had two starts where he pitched at least seven innings, and in fact in both of the occasions it was only seven when he was yanked, the funny part is, that both of the games ended in losses for the team and a loss and no decision for Kyle. With a 10.43 ERA in the seven days is time for the Cards to bid farewell? Tell me what you think they should do with this 4-8 pitcher.

For next season if the Redbirds were smart they would find a filler for this empty hole. Tell me what you think the front office should about this problem.

Go Cards!!! Get the season over with!!! Thanks Cardinals Fans!!!

Lohse is going to be in the rotation unles he is physically unable to throw the ball.

Yes, it’s a bad contract. No, none of us are happy with his current performance. But for shit’s sake, he’s getting paid 12 million (or something like that) each of the next two seasons. We can’t just cut bait and write things off, and Lohse has the dual albatrosses of a NTC AND a hideous contract, so he’s not going anywhere. We just have to hope that he can find a way to turn it around next year and give us 180 innings of about 4.50 era ball.

We can’t just cut bait and write things off

Why? He’s a sunk cost- unless he’s better than “best AAA arm”, he shouldn’t play. Playing him doesn’t earn any of the money back, and if it costs wins, it effectively costs money.

if he doesn’t excel in ST, they should either DFA him, put him on the 60-day and hope he gets better after a year of rehab, or give him the brad Thompson Emeritus bullpen slacker role.

Yes, he's sunk a sunk cost.

And yes, we’re this a perfectly rational, solely economically driven decision then you’d be right. But you and I both know that isn’t how decisions are made – the FO is going to try to squeeze some value out of him owing as much to the dollars they’ve sunk in as to his potential to be a viable back of the rotation option.

I’m sure if he continues to throw four innings of 7 hit, 4 walk ball every time out, there will come a point when the stink coming off his arm will be so intense even the front office can’t ignore it. But throught ST and the first half of the 2011 season, Lohse is going to get every opportunity to sink or swim.

I think they have to go into...

next year with two new starters – and I don’t mean Rich Hill. More like a Westbrook/Vazquez/Lilly type and another cheaper signing. Have the cheaper signing and Lohse battle it out and stick the other in the pen. 20+ starts by Walters, Hawksworth, and Soup killed us.

why is trade even on the poll?

do you know any teams who are looking for a pitcher who was worth less than one win this year, had a 4.40 FIP, and will make 12 million next year? i don’t.

I know you're kind of new here

So welcome! However, citing W-L and ERA, and more importantly ERA over 7 days, isn’t going to cut it if we are talking about a player’s performance.
